Chapter 10
Ether woke with a start, something was outside her window and it had awoken her. She shivered and sat up, glancing around and out into the night. She could see that it was still very late out; in fact she would guess it was around midnight. She continued to shiver for sometime until finally she rolled over onto her side to try and ignore whatever made that feeling. She fiend sleep by slowing her breathing and forcing her heartbeat to drop. She stayed like that for a few minutes to see if anything would happen, or if the thing that had awoken her would make its self-known. It was a few minutes later until finally there was a slight scratching at her window, as if someone was trying to open it from the outside. She stiffened slowly, her hands balling into fists as the scratching continued. Soon the scratching escalated into tugging and soft pounding. She glanced at the window and into a pair of glowing red eyes. Even though she didn't find red eyes strange, she was still shocked and extremely frightened.
Ethril screamed loudly and the creature turned and fled. It had been shielded so she couldn't tell if it had been a demon, monster, or something else. Her light was switched on and Inu-Yasha was there, his hand on his sword. Kagome pushed past him and ran to Ether. “What's wrong?” she said in a worried, hurried voice.
Ether shivered and glanced around. “Something was trying to get through my window!” she exclaimed, the red eyes still imprinted in her mind. She had a growing suspicion that it might be one of the demons that had wanted to adopt her and felt that it wasn't right that she was living with humans and a priestess in a shrine. She felt searing tears roll down her eyes as Inu-yasha opened her window and leapt from it, obviously spotting the intruder.
Ether didn't realize she was shivering so hard until Kagome wrapped her arms around her. “It's going to be ok Ether,” she whispered. As she held her younger sister, she wondered if anyone at the orphanage had ever held her to comfort her. She wondered if Ether had ever had someone to hold her since she had been all alone.
Ether calmed slowly and then giggled nervously. “Maybe I was just imagining whatever was there.” She was trying to convince herself she had seen nothing until Inu-Yasha returned.
“There was someone here, their barrier dropped slightly as they ran.” He hesitated. “It seemed to have been a demon of some sort.”
Ether whimpered and curled up, she didn't like the idea that a demon had just tried to break into her room in the dead of night. She took a deep breath to try and steady her heart rate, which was still pounding fast and hard. Couldn't the demons in the world be happy for her, couldn't they just accept the fact that she wanted to live with her real family?
She wished Sesshomaru were here. She felt protected and safe just thinking about him for some reason, something she hadn't felt since her aunt and mother had died.
She glanced out her window again and then at her clock. She hadn't been to far off about the time, it was going on 2 o'clock. She sighed sadly and curled up under her blankets. “Sorry about worrying you.” She murmured, her eyes heavy with sleep.
Kagome smiled tiredly, but still warmly. “You don't have to be sorry, you were scared. And Inu-Yasha said someone was there…” she looked out the window worriedly. Kagome looked back to Ether and smoothed down her sister's hair. “We better get back to sleep. We'll be getting up early to head back through the well.” She looked up at Inu-Yasha and saw him climbing back out the window, to stand guard. She smiled warmly back to Ether. “Try to get to sleep ok?”
Ether nodded and curled up under her blankets again. She wasn't paying much attention so she really didn't notice Inu-Yasha jumping out her window and onto the roof. `I have a bad feeling.' She thought as she closed her eyes to try and get to sleep.
Kagome stayed there for a few minutes before turning and heading back to her room. `I hope she gets some sleep.' She thought to herself.
During that night Ether tossed and turned, unable to get the gazing red eyes out of her mind. She would fall asleep and a few minutes later jolt awake with the feeling of being watched, even though nothing was there.
By morning she was a nervous wreck that wanted to get back to Sesshomaru and away from the stranger with red eyes. She packed a couple changes of clothes, her dagger, her plushy, her deck of cards, a notebook, and other odds and ends that fit into her medium sized backpack. She thought for a moment then shrugged, lifting the bag onto her shoulders. She shivered slightly and looked around, getting that feeling of being watched again. She pushed back her black hair and walked down the stairs to the kitchen. Mom had made a nice breakfast for them, something they could eat quickly but still enjoy.
Breakfast was silent for the group. Kagome and Ether's mother had finished and was preparing to start her housework; Sota was half asleep over his breakfast. Grandpa had left early to go to the shrine for early prayers.
Inu-Yasha finished first and got up to carry the two bags to the well. Silence seemed to dwell everywhere among the family and half-demon. Ether was just exhausted from having little sleep, Kagome was worried about what had happened last night and if the demon might try to brake in tonight while they were gone, Inu-Yasha was silent because he didn't want to invoke Kagome's rage (he thought she was mad about something), and Sota was silent because he wasn't fully awake for school. Ether and Kagome finished their breakfasts at the same time and Ether carried the dishes to the sink.
“We'll see you in a week ok Sota?” Kagome said with a smile. “Tell mom not to worry too much about us.”
Sota nodded and continued eating. “Right….no worry.” He muttered.
Ether came back out and nodded to Kagome. The sisters headed for the well, followed by Buyo who was following Kagome. “No no you silly cat, stay in the house.” Kagome told Buyo, trying to push him back towards the house.
“Mrooow.” That was what was heard as Buyo lay down where he was standing. He rolled over and closed his eyes, feigning sleep.
Kagome sighed and turned back towards the well, following Ether.
“Kagome and I will go in first Ether, then you can follow.” Inu-Yasha stated. He only decided this because he wanted to hold Kagome as they jumped.
Ether shrugged and leaned against the doorframe as Kagome and Inu-Yasha grabbed the HUGE yellow bag and jumped in. There was a flash of light and Ether grabbed her bag as she walked up to the well brim. She looked down into the dark depths of the well and closed her eyes to jump. As she fell, she didn't hear the well door reopen nor did she see the red headed figure lean over the well.
Ether came out of the well just after Kagome and Inu-Yasha did. She carefully climbed the vine latter, wondering why Sesshomaru hadn't flown down to carry her up or something. She giggled softly as she grasped the top edge of the well and pulled herself out. She sat on the edge for a moment before standing. “That…will always be the strangest thing in the world.” She said, mostly to Kagome and Inu-Yasha. She was talking about how the well teleported them through time. Kagome nodded understandingly and Inu-Yasha merely shrugged.
Inu-yasha didn't really give a damn about what it was like. All he cared about was that it connected him with Kagome.
Ether shifted her bag and began to walk over to Sesshomaru. As she walked the well-flashed blue again and a hand wearing black fingerless glove appeared on the brim of the well. Again Ether didn't really notice because her back was turned away from the well, but everyone else did.
Kagome was in shock; no one else should be able to use the well besides she, Inu-Yasha, and Ether. They watched as the hand pulled up slightly and then a man jumped from the well. He flipped lightly and landed without a sound.
By this point Ether was standing next to Sesshomaru and finally noticed how silent everyone was being. (She doesn't notice things in case people didn't notice…irony) She turned back to the well and froze from shock like the others.
The guy had dark red hair with black tips, he was tall, probably as tall as Sesshomaru, and his shirt was dark blood red with black designs on the edges with no sleeves while his pants were black. He wore a black scarf that circled around his neck and then the edge trailed behind him like a half cloak. There were two swords crossed on his back, the left one had an intricate black hilt, with tassels hanging from the end. The tassels seemed to almost be alive because of their slight movement. The hilt on the right was plain looking, with little intricacy. He had piercing clear blue eyes that looked at each person individually before resting on Ether.
Slowly Sesshomaru was moving in front of Ether in a protective manner. Inu-Yasha was actually pushing Kagome back away from the stranger.
The stranger looked around again before finally speaking. “You have something that does not belong to you.” He said in a dark and deep voice, his eyes sparking slightly. The tassels on his sword moved slightly, as if stirred by a breeze that wasn't there. He turned slightly and bent into the beginnings of a stance, his left hand twitching as if preparing to grab one of his swords. His chest was facing more towards Ether, and his left shoulder was towards the group.
Kagome frowned and pushed Inu-Yasha slightly so she could keep her eyes on the stranger. She couldn't feel anything threatening about the stranger, nor could she even sense any danger. “Inu-Yasha,” She finally hissed out warningly
Inu-Yasha stopped pushing, but stayed in front of her.
“What the hell is it then?” Inu-Yasha screamed as Sesshomaru demanded in a cold hard voice. The two brothers stopped and glanced at each other, both a little shocked that they had said the same thing at the same exact time.
Kagome giggled softly, she couldn't help it, it had been funny how the two had spoken out at the same time, that and the fact she was still a little shocked. Just the words they had said proved they were brothers. It didn't help that she was slightly sleep deprived and a little fearful because of the sudden appearance of the stranger.
Inu-Yasha and Sesshomaru both glared at Kagome for a moment to silence her giggles before looking back to the stranger.
Ether tugged at Sesshomaru's armless sleeve. “What's going on?” She whispered softly. She didn't quite understand. Who was this guy and why did he feel…familiar?
Sesshomaru glanced out of the corner of his eye at Ether. He didn't know what was going on either so he didn't say anything. He focused on the stranger, he was different, there was something about him that reminded him of Ether in away, but there was something else there.

All this took place in a matter of seconds. The stranger lifted his left hand and pointed at the girl that was tugging at Sesshomaru's sleeve. “Her.” he stated simply.
Sesshomaru moved swiftly in front of Ether to block her from view as the others prepared for a fight. The aura around the stranger changed drastically from calm to intense. It seemed like he was ready to start a battle at any moment. His hand lifted and started to enclose the hilt of his left sword, the tassels moving drastically, some touching his hand. He eyes focused and hardened as he concentrated his strength for a powerful fight.
Sango moved so that she could easily grasp her boomerang, she never went anywhere without it anymore, Miroku was tugging at his prayer beads around his hand, his staff resting in the crook of his left arm so that it wouldn't fall, Inu-Yasha had his hand on the hilt of the Tetsusaiga, Kagome had backed up because she didn't have her bow and arrows with her, Sesshomaru had his hand on Tokijin, his fingers clasping it hard, and Ether was trying to peak out from behind Sesshomaru, her hands still curled around his empty sleeve. The air was intense, the group was glaring at the stranger, and the stranger was looking only at Sesshomaru. It seemed like the stranger was waiting for someone in the group to attack while the group was waiting for the stranger to attack.
“Mroooooow!” Broke the stiff silence that had covered the group as everyone prepared for a tough fight.
The stranger stopped and blinked once then twice. His aura and posture relaxed with surprise as he turned his head towards the well.
There, sitting on the edge of the well, was a fat mrowing Buyo.
“I told you not to follow me!” the stranger exclaimed.
“Mraoww” Buyo said, showing off his fangs in hunger.
“You can't have my fish so there!” the stranger didn't realize he was receiving many strange looks from the group behind him as he spoke with Buyo, Kagome's fat cat.

Cliff hanger!!! Weren't you all expecting a biiiiiig fight to ensue??? Well not in this chapter.
I would like to thank the love of my life and fiancé for helping me write this chapter and for giving me his RP character Richard Cypher for the story. For those who play on Gaiaonline, imagine his scarf to be similar to the nightmare scarf.
For future chapters of this fanfiction, Richard will be the Co-Author of this story. I will be writing it mostly myself, but he will be adding to it in ways still unknown. Hopefully it's all for the best.
