Inuyasha stood facing the sunset, his long black hair blowing in the breeze. It was almost the end of his shift guarding the Shikon no Tama. Violet eyes scanned the horizon for any sign of danger. It was his duty as a holy warrior to protect the jewl from demons, or even humans, who would misuse it’s power. His best friend and fellow holy warrior Miroku stood by his side. He heard Miroku sigh quietly. He looked away from the sunset to see his friend leaning against the shrine door with a bored expression on his face.
“You know Inuyasha, I don’t see why we always have to stand here like this,” he said. “If a demon even comes close to the village we would sense it anyway. Why waste our time just standing here when we could be doing something else until we sense a demon?” Inuyasha shrugged.
“I just think it’s safer if we follow orders Miroku,” Inuyasha replied. “I’d rather face a thousand demons than a pissed off Myoga.” Myoga was the general of the holy warriors. He was too old to actually be of any help fending off demons, but he was still able to train those who could. In his youth, he had been a great warrior and none of the boys he trained ever did anything to bring his wrath upon them if he could avoid it. Miroku sighed again and shook his head sadly.
“I suppose you’re right,” he agreed. “But that doesn’t mean I have to like my orders.” Inuyasha rolled his eyes. The sun set completely and the two boys were relieved by two of their fellow warriors. Inuyasha left the shrine and headed to his hut while Miroku went off elsewhere, most likely looking for a woman to grope. Inuyasha entered his hut and placed his sword next to the door with a sigh. Suddenly a small blur collided with his middle.
“Aniki! I’m glad you’re back!,” a small voice exclaimed. (a/n I’m pretty sure aniki means older brother. Please correct me if I’m wrong!) Inuyasha smiled and hugged his little sister back.
“I wasn’t gone that long Kaede. And besides I was close by.”
“But I still missed you Aniki!,” Kaede exclaimed, clinging to her brother. “What if you never came back like Papa?” Inuyasha picked up his younger sister and looked her in the eye.
“Don’t worry Kaede, I would never do that to you,” he assured her. Kaede smiled happily and hugged him again.
“Good,” she said. Inuyasha laughed and pulled her away.
“Come on brat, time for bed.”
“I’m not a brat!,” she protested as he carried her to the futon.
“You are to. Now go to sleep Kaede, it’s way past your bed time.” She glared at him, but snuggled under the sheets anyway. She yawned and closed her eyes.
“G’night Aniki,” she said sleepily. Inuyasha smiled affectionately and kissed her forehead.
“Good night Kaede. Sweet dreams.” She drifted off immediately and Inuyasha headed to his own futon and laid down. Sleep eluded him however. Instead he found himself thinking about his sister. She had suffered so much at such a young age. Their mother had died in childbirth, so he and his father had been the only family she had ever known. Then a few years ago their father had died protecting the Shikon no Tama from a powerful demon. He had been one of the best holy warriors in the village in his time, but after his wife’s death he had never been the same. Now Inuyasha was all the family Kaede had left. Inuyasha took up his father’s sword the Tetsaiga and continued his father’s legacy by becoming a holy warrior himself. Kaede was always worried that Inuyasha would meet the same fate as their father and leave her all alone. Inuyasha felt bad for being the cause of her worry, but was determined to continue in his father’s footsteps and become a great warrior. At least he was still able to spend time with his sister. There were plenty of warriors to share the work, so he had plenty of time to spend with her. He was about to try to go to sleep when he sensed a demonic aura near the city. He jumped up and snatched Tetsaiga from it’s resting place. His hut was close to the forest so he could detect any demons coming close to the village. He would always be the first to sense them. He glanced at Kaede then left quietly to see what demon would even consider coming near his village.

Kagome knelt next to the small lake and scooped up some water to splash on her face. Her black hair fell past her shoulders and her crystal blue, eyes with their black slitted pupils looked up at the slightest movement. On top of her head, two black wolf ears swiveled constantly, listening for anything that could be considered dangerous. Once she decided that it was safe, she jumped up into a tree to sit. Once settled she began to mentally curse. That damn Koga had driven her out of the pack! She growled angrily as she recalled what had just happened. Kagome had never really belonged in her pack, and she had always known it. After all, what pack would want a hanyou in it? Her mother, the leader of the pack had mated a human man from a nearby village. Unfortunately he died when Kagome was still young. Her mother was devastated, but determined to continue raising their daughter. She taught Kagome everything she knew and loved her daughter very much. When she died, Kagome was supposed to take over as leader of the pack. But the pack wouldn’t allow it. One of the wolves, Koga, challenged her. She remembered vividly what had happened.

Flashback:

Koga approached Kagome confidently. She growled at him, trying to make him back down, but he merely smirked at her.
“There is no way we will allow a hanyou to lead our pack,” he told her.
“I am the leader by right,” she replied angrily. “If you have a problem with that then challenge me for the title.” Koga shook his head sadly.
“Kagome, this would be so much easier if you would just submit and become my mate. That way I get to be leader, and you still have some standing in the pack.” Kagome’s eyes flashed in anger at his words.
“There is no way in hell I would ever submit to you Koga. If you want to be the leader then fight me.” Koga sighed.
“Very well then. If you won’t be my mate then youwill have no standing in this pack at all. I’ll fight you. If you win then you can be the alpha female and leader. If you lose then you must leave the pack.”
“Agreed.”
End Flashback:

Kagome had been beaten and ejected from the pack. Her ears flattened miserably as she thought about it. She had fled and ran as far away as she possibly could. Eventually she came upon the forest she was in now. It seemed pretty peaceful. She figured she might as well stay here, seeing as she didn’t have anywhere else to go. No one would bother her here except the animals. Suddenly her nose twitched as she caught the scent of a human heading towards her. Ok so she was wrong. But maybe this human would be kind enough to ignore her presence. She saw the human as he got a little closer, along with the sword at his belt. Then again...maybe he wouldn’t. She watched him scan the area, one hand on the hilt of his sword. Kagome realized that he had probably sensed her presence and was out to kill the “evil demon”. She sighed and decided to get it over with.
“Looking for something?,” she asked calmly. She almost laughed when his head shot up to find where her voice was coming from. He narrowed his eyes and glared at her icily.
“So you’re the demon I sensed? You don’t look like much to me,” he said. She rolled her eyes, but otherwise didn’t move.
“So what do you want with me? I haven’t done anything to you.”
“I want to know who you are and what you’re doing here.” Kagome watched him for a moment, then shrugged and jumped down from her branch, landing gracefully in front of him. He backed up a step and eyed her warily. She crossed her arms and looked him up and down before answering.
“The name’s Kagome. I’m just trying to find a place to sleep. Who are you?”
“I am Inuyasha, holy warrior and guardian of the Shikon no Tama,” he told her proudly. “It is my duty to protect the village and the jewl from demons like you.”
“Shikon no Tama? Never heard of it. And I doubt you’ve ever met a demon like me before.”
“Like I believe that. And what do you mean I’ve never met a demon like you before? I’ve killed dozens of demons. What makes you different from them?”
“She’s a half demon,” a voice said from behind Inuyasha. “Can’t you tell?” Kagome and Inuyasha jumped slightly in surprise. Neither of them had noticed anyone else approaching. Standing there was an old man who was slightly bald and had a sword at his waist. “You should have known that when you first saw her Inuyasha. Apparantly you haven’t payed enough attention to your lessons.” Inuyasha scowled at the man.
“We never covered hanyous Myoga. Besides, I learned everything I needed to.” Kagome’s ears twitched toward Myoga as she regarded him curiously.
“Who are you?,” she asked, becoming a little more wary at the sight of two humans with swords. Plus she could sense a strong aura coming from the old man. He smiled reasuringly at her.
“I am Myoga, general of the holy warriors. Please excuse Inuyasha, he is only trying to fullfill his duty.”
“Myoga she’s a demon! Why are you being so nice to her?,” Inuyasha asked angrily. Myoga glared at the younger warrior.
“Inuyasha she hasn’t done anything has she?”
“Well not that we know of.” Kagome growled at him.
“I haven’t done anything period! I’m just looking for a place to stay! I didn’t even know there was a village near here! I just came to this forest because it seemed peaceful and I thought no one would bother me here!”
“Feh. And why should we beleive you, even if you are half human?” Kagome’s growl gained volume. Myoga sighed and shook his head.
“Inuyasha be silent,” he snapped. “She’s not the one who went out looking for a fight, you were!” Inuyasha blushed slightly then looked away.
“Feh.” Kagome blinked in surprise. Why was this old man being so nice to her? She was just a hanyou after all. Myoga turned back to her and smiled.
“As long as you do not cause any trouble you are free to stay in this forest. It’s uninhabited anyway. But there is a human village nearby so be careful alright?” Kagome nodded dumbly hardly believing her ears.
“But Myoga,” Inuyasha began. Myoga glared at him again.
“Inuyasha for the last time be silent!”
“But she’s a demon!” Myoga shook his head and gestured at Kagome angrily.
“Inuyasha stop being a stubborn idiot and look at her aura! What do you see?” Inuyasha glared at Myoga then peered at the hanyou in front of him. Her aura glowed a dark purple in his mind’s eye, just as Myoga’s and his own glowed a bright blue. It was similar to all the demon auras he had seen while protecting the jewl. Except for one thing. The color was untainted by the blackness that other demon’s auras contained. He looked over at Myoga surprised.
“What does it mean?,” he asked. Myoga sighed.
“It means that there is no evil in her soul. Not all demons are evil, just as not all humans are good. Remember that.” Inuyasha looked away and Myoga turned back to Kagome. “Sorry for disturbing you. We’ll be on our way now. Come on Inuyasha.” He turned and headed out. Inuyasha looked up at Kagome with a fierce glare.
“If you ever come near teh village or the jewl then I will kill you,” he warned. He abruptly turned and followed after Myoga. Kagome glared at his retreating back but didn’t bother to reply. She jumped back into the tree she had been sitting in before. What a strange ningen that old man was, she mused. He didn’t act like a human normally would. That other one though, what an ass hole! Typical ignorant ningen who thinks he’s better than her just because she’s a half breed. He was no better than Koga. Well it didn’t matter. As long as she stayed in the forest...her forest now...then she would’t see him again. She sighed and closed her eyes. Well, she may not have a pack anymore, but maybe it was better that she was alone. Half breeds weren’t meant to be pack creatures, even if they were part wolf. She was a lone wolf, and that was what she would always be.
