Several days passed peacefully for Kagome as she began to explore her new home. She had seen the village Myoga and Inuyasha had talked about from the edge of the forest. It was a pretty average looking village from first glance, but as she looked more carefully she saw many humans with various weapons. Once she had found it, she avoided that end of the forest. When she got too close to the edge, Inuyasha would appear to insult her and glare at her threateningly. He was so IRRITATING and she was beginning to lose patience with him. Anyway she was perfectly content to stay in her forest. She had no need ot leave, in the forest was everything she needed, food, water, and shelter. She gazed at the village from the tree tops as she hunted. That’s right. Everything she needed was right here. So why was she always looking at the village? She shook her head. She was being stupid. She needed to focus on the hunt, not on some annoying humans. She looked around and plunged back into the forest. It was no use looking for prey on the tree tops after all. She tested the breeze with her powerful nose. Her ears percked up eagerly. A wild boar, that would be a good catch. She followed the scent, stealthily jumping from tree to tree. It was close, very close. Soon she could hear the boar’s squeals. Wait...that didn’t sound like a boar...it sounded like a human! She picked up the pace and quickly reached the source of the noise. There was a small human girl being cornered by the boar. Without even thinking about what she was doing, Kagome lept out of the tree and jumped between the girl and the boar. She growled menacingly at the boar, causing it to skid to a halt, turn tail and run. Kagome snorted disdainfully. What a waste of good meat. Well, she could always track it down later. She turned to the girl who was crouching behind her. The girl had long black hair and dark brown eyes that watched Kagome through her bangs.
“Are you alright?,” Kagome asked. The girl nodded and smiled.
“Yeah, I’m ok. Thanks for saving me,” she replied. Kagome smiled warmly at the girl.
“Your welcome. So, what were you doing in this forest anyway?”
“I was looking for some herbs for my aniki. I always find the best herbs out here. But I’ve never seen you before. Who are you?”
“I’m Kagome. I just got here a few days ago. Who are you?” The little girl gave her a friendly smile.
“I’m Kaede! I live in the village that’s near here. Do you live in the forest now?” Kagome nodded.
“Yep. This is my home now. Demo, it’s dangerous for a kid like you to be alone out here. Does anyone know where you are?” Kaede shook her head.
“Iie. Aniki was training with Miroku when I realized we were out of herbs. I’m not allowed to go to the shrine, so I just left without telling him.” Kagome lookes slightly confused.
“Shrine? Ano...then is your brother one of those holy warriors?” Kaede nodded vigerously.
“Yep! He’s gonna be a great warrior just like Papa was!,” she told Kagome proudly. Kagome mentally sighed. If Kaede’s brother was a holy warrior he might think the worst if he found Kaede in the forest talking to a hanyou. Kagome really wasn’t in the mood to fight with any of those warriors. She held out a hand to Kaede.
“Well, come on then. I’ll take you to the edge of the forest and make sure you don’t get hurt. We don’t want your brother to worry about you after all.” Kaede frowned.
“Yeah, cause then he’s start yelling and acting crazy.” Kagome chuckled and Kaede took the hanyou’s hand. Kagome swung her around so that she could carry Kaede piggy back.
“Hold onto my neck,” she instructed. “I’m a fast runner!” Kaede latched her arms securely around Kagome’s neck.
“Ready!”
“Ok then, here we go!” Kagome crouched and launched herself into the trees. She broke through the foliage to stand on the tops of the trees and began to run. Kaede gasped and gave a delighted laugh as the wind whipped through her hair. Kagome grinned and went a little faster and was rewarded with another laugh. She quickly reached the edge of the forest and jumped down, landing lightly on the ground. She pulled the reluctant girl off of her back and set her down. Kaede beamed at the hanyou.
“That was so much fun!,” she exclaimed. “Can we do that again sometime?” Kagome smiled affectionately and ruffled Kaede’s hair.
“I don’t think so pup,” she replied. Kaede pouted.
“Aw, why not?”
“Well-” Kagome began. Suddenly she was cut off by someone shouting nearby.
“Kaede! Kaede are you all right?!” Running towards them and looking very worried was Inuyasha. Kaede smiled and raced up to meet him.
“Hiya Aniki!” Kagome groaned and cursed blackly in her mind. Inuyasha was her brother? WHY? Out of all the ningens in the village why did it have to be Inuyasha?! Inuyasha scooped Kaede up in his arms and hugged her.
“There you are Kaede! Where were you? I’ve been worried sick!” Kaede hugged him back before pointing to Kagome.
“I was in the forest looking for herbs and a boar started chasing me. But Kagome nee-chan (a/n: Is that right?) saved me! Then she let me ride on her back and brought me out of the forest,” she told him. Inuyasha looked over at Kagome, noticing her for the first time.
“Y-you saved her?,” he asked in surprise. Kagome crossed her arms and did her best to look indifferent.
“Yeah, I was hunting when I saw the boar had cornered her. It cost me my lunch, but I can always track it down later.” Inuysaha stared at her, not sure what to think. Kaede squirmed out of her brother’s hold and ran back to Kagome. She reached into the small pouch tied to her belt and pulled out a handfull of berries. She held the berries up to Kagome.
“Here Kagome nee-chan! Since you lost your lunch cause of me, you can have these berries I found!” Kagome smiled in spite of herself. She took the offered berries, then crouched down so that she was eye level with Kaede.
“Arigatou pup. That’s really nice of you. You’re alot nicer than you brother.” Kaede giggled and Inuyasha blinked before glaring at them. Kagome ruffled Kaede’s hair and stood, popping the berries into her mouth. After she swallowed them she smiled one more time at Kaede, before turning to Inuyasha. “You could learn a thing or two from her,” she told him. Without waiting for a reply she turned and jummped into the trees, quickly running out of sight. Kaede was safe now so she didn’t need to hang around. Besides, she had a boar to track down.
Inuyasha examined Kaede for any injuries, making sure she hadn’t been harmed in any way. Kaede giggled and grabbed her brother’s hands to stop him.
“Stop it, that tickles!,” she said. “What are you doing anyway?”
“Making sure the hanyou didn’t hurt you,” he replied. Kaede frowned at him.
“Kagome nee-chan saved me! Besides, she’s really nice. She wouldn’t hurt anyone! How come you’re so mean to her?” Inuyasha scowled in the direction of the woods.
“Kaede, that girl is half wolf demon. She’s a danger to the village and should be treated as such. I don’t want you going anywhere near that forest agan, understand?” Kaede pouted again.
“Aw come on Aniki, she’s not dangerous! And I get my herbs from the forest. I have to go there once in a while!”
“That’s where you’ve been getting your herbs from? Why didn’t you tell me that before?” Kaede shrugged.
“I dunno. Where else would I have gotten them from?” Inuyasha glared at his sister and shook his head.
“Well, it doesn’t matter. As long as that....that...hanyou is in the forest you’re not allowed to go anywhere near it.” Kaede frowned and shrugged again.
“Whatever you say Aniki.” Inuyasha seemed satisfied with her answer and they walked back to the village in silence. All the way back Kaede was laughing inside her head. It was so easy to make Inuyasha believe her! She had no intention of staying away. Just because Inuyasha had issues with Kagome didn’t mean she did too. She knew Kagome wouldn’t hurt her. Besides, she had to go to that forest for the herbs she gathered for the village healer. She’d just have to be more careful about sneaking away to gather them that’s all. Once they were back in the village, Kaede went off to play with some other children and Inuyasha went looking for Miroku. He found his friend in a heap on the ground in front of a young woman who was livid with anger. She had her long hair pulled away from her face in a pony tail, and a large boomerang in her hands. Sitting on her shoulder was a small fire neko. Inuyasha shook his head at his unconsious friend before addressing the girl.
“Oi, what did he do now Sango?,” he asked. Sango looked up and dropped the murderous glare that had been on her face.
“Oh, the usual, touching where he shouldn’t have,” she replied casually. Inuyasha crouched down to inspect the comotose warrior. Miroku had a large bump on his head, most likely from Sango’s boomerang the hiraikotsu.
“You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these days you killed him, or cracked the hiraikotsu on his thick skull.” Sango huffed in irritation.
“It almost did crack once! And he still was up and walking in ten minutes! Honestly, sometimes I wonder if he’s really human!” Sango was a demon slayer who had taken residence in the village a few years ago along with her brother Kohaku. Their village had been totally destroyed, and Sango, Kohaku, and Sango’s demon companion Kirara, were the only survivors. The villagers had welcomed the sibling’s demon slaying skills to help protect the Shikon no Tama. Miroku had taken to Sango quickly, but he just couldn’t abandon his lecherous ways, resulting in almost ritual beatings for the misfortunate boy. Inuyasha laughed and poked his friend.
“Come on Miroku wake up!” Miroku groaned and slowly opened his eyes.
“What happened?,” he asked groggily.
“Sango knocked you out again,” his friend answered simply. “Because you had to go and act like a damn lecher again.” Miroku sat up and rubbed the bump on his head.
“Itai, that smarts. Oh, that’s right I remember now.” He smiled a little sheepishly and glanced at Sango who was glaring at him. “My hand seems to have been cursed by a demon or something, I just can’t control it around women!” Inuyasha snorted in disbelief and stood, holding out a handto his friend. Miroku took it and allowed Inuyasha to pull him to his feet. He dusted himself off and decided to change the topic before Sango hit him again. “So Inuyasha, I heard that a hanyou has taken up residence in the forest. Do you know anything about it?” Inuyasha nodded.
“Yeah I met her. She’s a wolf hanyou and Myoga let her stay in the forest as long as she doesn’t pull anything funny.”
“She?,” Miroku asked eagerly. Sango sighed and yanked on his pony tail.
“Why do you have to be such a hentai?,” she asked as Miroku winced in pain.
“I told you I’m cursed!”
“Lame excuse Miroku.” She released him and absently began to pet Kirara’s head. “So Inuyasha, what’s this hanyou like? Did you find out anything about her?”
“Her name is Kagome, but that’s all I know. I don’t like having someone like her so close to the village, but still...” He paused briefly before continuing. “...Still, Myoga vouched for her and Kaede says she saved her from a boar earlier.”
“Nani? What are you talking about?,” Sango asked in confusion. Inuyasha scowled at her.
“The little brat went into the forest for herbs or something and apparntly got attacked by a boar. I foiund her at the edge of the forest with Kagome. She said that Kagome had saved her. I don’t know what that hanyou is up to, but it’s probably nothing good.” Sango sighed and shook her head.
“Not all demons are like Kikyo Inuyasha,” she said. “Take Kirara for instance. She’s not evil and you like her don’t you?”
“That’s different. She’s not like other demons. She’s almost domestic. Kikyo and the hanyou had human like forms and can manipulate people,” Inuyasha protested. Miroku placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder.
“Sango’s right Inuyasha, you shouldn’t judge this Kagome girl based on your memories of Kikyo. That’s not fair to Kagome. Hai, Kikyo was an evil manipulative...” He sturggled to find the proper word to descibe the demoness. “...creature, but that doesn’t mean Kagome is. Besides, Kagome is only half demon correct? That means she also has human feelings and maybe even human morals.” Inuyasha turned away from his friends.
“Whatever. Look, I’m gonna go check on Kaede. I’ll see you guys later.” He walked away, lost in his thoughts and memories. Kikyo had been a full demon who had convinced Inuyasha that she was in love with him. But in reality, she had been using him to get close to the jewl. Once she had gained Inuyasha’s trust she infultrated the shrine and tired to steal the Shikon no Tama. Inuyasha’s father had been on guard duty and tried to stop her. They both died in the battle. From that day on, Inuyasha, broken hearted, vowed never to trust a demon like that again. Miroku and Sango just didn’t understand like he did. Dealing with demons only caused pain and suffering. Well, unlike them he knew all too well what would happen. He would keep an eye on the hanyou, even if Kaede and Myoga trusted her, he didn’t.
