Inuyasha cursed blackly under his breath as he waited with Miroku and Sango for Kagome to arrive. He couldnt believe that Myoga had forced this assignment on him. He was a solder damn it! He didnt know anything about politics! His two friends ignored him.
::So what is this Kagome-sama like Sango?,:: Miroku asked with an eager gleam in his eye. Sango picked up Kirara and absently stroked her fur.
::Dont be getting any ideas Houshi-sama. She could easily slice you in half,:: the exterminator warned. ::She seems like a good person, but I wouldnt cross her if I were you.:: Miroku nodded.
::Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned,:: he mused. ::As I know all too well.::
::Where the hell is the wench anyway?,:: Inuyasha demanded to know. ::I want to get this damn assignment over with!:: Sango shrugged.
::Keep your shirt on Yash, Im sure shell be here soon,:: she replied. ::And would you please just try to get along with her? I dont want to deal with your attitude for the whole time were gone.:: She scanned the edge of the forest for any sign of Kagome while Inuyasha continued to mutter and curse. Finally she could see the hanyou emerging from the trees. She smiled and waved, placing Kirara on the ground. ::Kagome! Over here!:: Kagome smiled and waved back.
::Hello Sango,:: she called back. She jogged over to them and glanced at Inuyasha. ::I see Myoga got him to come. That must have been quite a feat.:: Sango chuckled and Miroku immediately rushed over to Kagome, taking her hand in his.
::Its a pleasure to meet you Kagome-sama,:: he said, giving her his most charming smile. ::I am Miroku, one of the protectors of the Shikon no Tama. I have a question for you to consider.:: She blinked at his sudden closeness, but didnt pull away.
::Oh...hello Miroku-sama. What is your question?:: Miroku stared seriously into her eyes.
::Would you consider bearing my child?:: Kagome jerked back in shock. What was she supposed to say to that? Fortunately, Sango chose that moment to crack Miroku over the head with her hiraikotsu, one of her eyes twitching from a mix of anger and irritation.
::Just ignore him Kagome. Hes just a filthy letch,:: she told the hanyou. Miroku looked up at them from his place on the ground, his eyes not quite focused.
::Wow, the stars are out early today,:: he said.
::Well it looks like youve finally done it Sango. Youve destroyed what little sense was left in that hollow head of his,:: a voice commented from behind the group. The teens turned to find Totosai standing there with a two bladed ax in his hand. He smiled at them as Sango put her hiraikotsu on her back once more.
::Oh, hello Totosai-sama,:: the exterminator greeted. ::What brings you here:: The old man gestured to the ax with his free hand.
::Ive brought a weapon for the hanyou Kagome,:: he replied. He looked over at the hanyou who was now standing several feet from Miroku. ::I take it youre her?:: She nodded.
::Hai, I am Kagome. Who are you jiji?:: Totosai blinked his large eyes slowly, seemingly unfazed by the girls rudeness.
::I am Totosai, the great blacksmith. Myoga asked me to forge this for you, and I wanted to deliver it to you personally.:: He laid the ax out across his palms and held it out to her. ::This ax has special properties, much like Inuyashas sword the Tetsusaiga which I also forged. I wanted to be sure that it would accept you as its wielder.:: Kagome moved closer to examine the weapon. It had a long staff, painted a glossy black color, that when held upright, made the top of the blade of equal height with the tips of her ears. The twin blades gleamed in the sunlight, and the large clear crystal fixed between them sparkled brightly. She slowly reached out and took it from the old man, holding it aloft before her. She ran a finger over the crystal, and flared to life, pulsing with energy. Its color went from clear to a dark amethyst in seconds, the same shade as Kagomes yoki. The hanyou could feel a strange power flow from the weapon into her arm, and spread through her veins. Her yoki flared briefly, then receded once more. With it went the color form the crystal, which was clear once more. She looked up from the ax to see Totosai smiling smugly.
::So, I guess it accepted me ne?,:: she asked with a grin. Totosai nodded.
::Looks that way. Its all yours Kagome,:: he replied.
::Does it have a name yet?:: The smith shook his head.
::Nope, Ill leave that part up to you.::
::Hmm...:: Kagome fingered the crystal thoughtfully. ::I think Ill call it, Zenaku.:: Miroku-who had just recovered from his latest concussion-stood and dusted himself off.
::Youre calling it good and evil?,:: he asked. ::Care to explain why?:: Kagome shrugged.
::Well, its because Im a hanyou. Humans think that they are good, and that demons are evil right? So logically speaking, hanyous should be half and half, both good and evil. Although, most humans dont like to think logically apparently, because they seem to be very sure that having mixed blood makes us the most evil and corrupt creatures in existence.:: She glanced at Inuyasha as she said this, being sure to meet his stubborn violet eyes with her cool blue ones. He met her gaze for a few moments before scowling and turning away.
::Feh,:: he grunted. ::Lets get moving already!:: He turned and stomped away. Totosai shook his head sadly as he watched the warrior.
::Poor boy just cant handle the truth,:: he said softly.
::What was that Totosai-sama?,:: Sango asked. Totosai blinked innocently.
::Oh nothing. You should probably go after him though. I doubt he knows where hes going.:: He gave Kagome a friendly pat on the shoulder.
::Take good care of Zenaku. If anything happens or you need it honed, just stop by the forge.:: Kagome grinned and ran a finger lightly over the edge of one of the blades. It drew blood without her having to press down on it.
::I dont think thats going to happen anytime soon, but thanks for the offer.:: She licked the cut clean and it healed immediately. ::So, I guess we should get going.:: They said their farewells to Totosai, then jogged to catch up with Inuyasha. When they did, he glared at them, but didnt say anything.
::Where are we going first?,:: Sango asked.
::I believe our first stop is the Western lands, ruled by the Inu no Taishou Sesshomaru-sama,:: Miroku replied. One of Kagomes ears flinched at the mention of Sesshomaru.
::You dont mean the same Sesshomaru whos father killed the demon Ryukoutsai?,:: (an: Uh...is that right? I have no idea how to spell it!) she asked nervously. ::Because from what Ive heard, he doesnt like humans very much. And Im pretty sure hell despise me for having human blood in my veins.::
::Dont forget Kagome-sama, you do have diplomatic immunity,:: Miroku pointed out. ::He wont violate that unless you do something to make him extremely angry. Speaking of which, Inuyasha you should watch that temper of yours from now on. Demon lords are quick to take insult you know.::
::I know that!,:: Inuyasha snapped back. ::Just get off my back!:: Miroku sighed.
::What fun this will be,:: he muttered. Kagome grinned.
::Well at least it wont be boring,:: she said. ::So...how many other demon lords are there other than Sesshomaru?::
::There are four altogether. Each lord rules a different territory. I only have information on two of them however. Sesshomaru-sama of the west, and Faiyar-sama, a lion demon, of the south. All that I know of the other two lords is that one is a canine yokai and the other a feline, the same as the others.::
::Have you met these demons before?,:: Sango asked. Miroku shook his head.
::Iie, I havent met them personally. I only know them through rumors. They are very well known among my comrades.::
::Well they are two of the most powerful demons in Japan,:: Kagome said. ::My kaa-san used to tell me stories about them all the time. She really respected their leadership skills, especially the lord of the east.:: The hanyou felt a sharp pain in her heart at the thought of her mother, but quickly pushed it aside. There was no reason for her to dwell on the past. Once she was sure she had control of her feelings she continued. ::I think I remember hearing that the lords of the north and east had died recently and new ones had taken their places. That may be why you havent heard anything about them yet.:: Sango frowned.
::I thought Myoga-sama gave you information on these demons before we left Miroku,:: she said.
::No, he didnt have any information to give. He said he hasnt had any contact with the new lords, so he doesnt know who they are yet.:: One of Kagomes ears twitched thoughtfully. What if the canine lord was a wolf demon? She was sure that Koga had spread word to the other wolf tribes about her shame and exile by now. If the canine leader was a wolf then his pack would humiliate her at every turn. What if...
::AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!:: Kagomes musings were interrupted by what sounded like a child screaming, followed by a loud bang. The others heard it as well, and the four of them immediately headed in the direction of the scream. Inuyasha was the first to reach its source. A small boy around Kaedes age was lying on his back, his clothes smoking faintly. His russet hair was covered in dirt, and an assortment of wounds and burns covered his small body. The others caught up as Inuyasha knelt down to examine the child.
::This looks like the work of a demon,:: Sango noted as Inuyasha checked the boys pulse. Kagome wrinkled her nose and nodded.
::Ugh, thats for sure. A recent attack as well. The scent of death is swamping this entire area, and its no more than an hour old,:: she said.
::Can you tell what kind of demon did this?,:: Miroku asked. Kagome sniffed delicately.
::No, the smell of ash and smoke is too strong,:: she replied. Sango knelt and examined the boys clothes.
::Strange, it almost looks like he was struck by lightning,:: she murmured. ::Is he alive Inuyasha?:: The black haired youth nodded.
::Yeah, I can feel a pulse, but I cant seem to wake him up.:: Kagome looked at the little boy sadly. She hated to see innocent children suffer, especially human ones. Unlike demon pups, human children rarely had means of defending themselves. She knelt down opposite of Inuyasha and placed Zenaku on the ground next to her, ignoring Inuyashas cold glare.
::Poor little pup,:: she murmured, reaching out to brush his bangs aside. Inuyasha grabbed her wrist.
::What the hell do you think youre doing?:: Kagome growled at him.
::Inuyasha calm down. Im not about to harm a defenseless pup!:: Her tail switched in agitation as Inuyasha attempted to stare her down. Kirara mewed and walked between the two bristling teens to examine the boy. She climbed onto his chest and sniffed his face once before gently licking the tip of his nose.
::Nnnh...:: The boy stirred and opened his eyes, blinking at the tiny demon standing over him. Kirara meowed smugly and moved to sit down next to Sango as the boy slowly sat up. Kagome instantly broke her gaze from Inuyasha to smile at the child.
::Youre awake! Are you all right?,:: she asked. The boy stared at her for a moment, then noticed her ears and tail. His sea green eyes widened in fear and he began to shake violently.
::O-onegai...dont hurt me,:: he stuttered. ::I-I havent done anything to you!:: Kaogme smiled reassuringly at him.
::Its all right pup, no one here is going to hurt you. We just want to help.:: The boy swallowed hard and glanced at the others nervously.
::Wh-who are you?,:: he asked, wincing as his lip split open and began to bleed. Kagome pulled a handkerchief out of her breeches pocket and handed it to the child.
::My name is Kagome. These are my companions Sango, Miroku, Kirara, and Inuyasha,:: she told him. The boy stared at the handkerchief in his hand and Kagome sighed gently. Dont just stare at it pup, use it on that cut.:: The boy blinked once, then slowly placed the cloth on his lip. Inuyasha placed a hand on the boys shoulder.
::Hey kid, you got a name?,:: he asked. The boy nodded and his shaking slowly calmed.
::My name is Shippo.::

::No, the smell of ash and smoke is too strong,:: she replied. Sango knelt and examined the boys clothes.
::Strange, it almost looks like he was struck by lightning,:: she murmured. ::Is he alive Inuyasha?:: The black haired youth nodded.
::Yeah, I can feel a pulse, but I cant seem to wake him up.:: Kagome looked at the little boy sadly. She hated to see innocent children suffer, especially human ones. Unlike demon pups, human children rarely had means of defending themselves. She knelt down opposite of Inuyasha and placed Zenaku on the ground next to her, ignoring Inuyashas cold glare.
::Poor little pup,:: she murmured, reaching out to brush his bangs aside. Inuyasha grabbed her wrist.
::What the hell do you think youre doing?:: Kagome growled at him.
::Inuyasha calm down. Im not about to harm a defenseless pup!:: Her tail switched in agitation as Inuyasha attempted to stare her down. Kirara mewed and walked between the two bristling teens to examine the boy. She climbed onto his chest and sniffed his face once before gently licking the tip of his nose.
::Nnnh...:: The boy stirred and opened his eyes, blinking at the tiny demon standing over him. Kirara meowed smugly and moved to sit down next to Sango as the boy slowly sat up. Kagome instantly broke her gaze from Inuyasha to smile at the child.
::Youre awake! Are you all right?,:: she asked. The boy stared at her for a moment, then noticed her ears and tail. His sea green eyes widened in fear and he began to shake violently.
::O-onegai...dont hurt me,:: he stuttered. ::I-I havent done anything to you!:: Kaogme smiled reassuringly at him.
::Its all right pup, no one here is going to hurt you. We just want to help.:: The boy swallowed hard and glanced at the others nervously.
::Wh-who are you?,:: he asked, wincing as his lip split open and began to bleed. Kagome pulled a handkerchief out of her breeches pocket and handed it to the child.
::My name is Kagome. These are my companions Sango, Miroku, Kirara, and Inuyasha,:: she told him. The boy stared at the handkerchief in his hand and Kagome sighed gently. Dont just stare at it pup, use it on that cut.:: The boy blinked once, then slowly placed the cloth on his lip. Inuyasha placed a hand on the boys shoulder.
::Hey kid, you got a name?,:: he asked. The boy nodded and his shaking slowly calmed.
