A Pledge of Fate
Kagome climbed out of the well. This would be the last time she would ever see this world, or her own. She'd made her choice, just like Inuyasha. Her path was no longer with Inuyasha or the shards of the shikon jewel.
Nor was it her fate to go on as the Kagome Higurashi she'd once been. Meeting Inuyasha and becoming a part of his life. She'd never suspected that doing that would make her life a living hell.
But it had. And here she was to say good-bye forever. Her mother had understood what she had meant when she'd said good-bye. And now she had to face Inuyasha and make him understand what choice she had made.
Her fate was the same as Kikyo's. To die loving Inuyasha, but the difference was that Kagome KNEW that he didn't love her. Sure he cared for her, but he would never love her. And then he was there, looking at her with his golden eyes.
“Inuyasha...I went back to my time and thought about you and Kikyo, and me. I realized that no matter what I say you will go with Kikyo wherever she leads you. And...I give you my blessing.
“And here, the jewel shards, they are rightfully Kikyo's after all.” Kagome was doing wonderfully at keeping her tears at bay. Inuyasha didn't look startled, he didn't even look surprised, he'd been expecting this.
No, his eyes held a sad look and a look of loss. Kagome almost began sobbing as she saw all this because she would never look into those eyes again. She wouldn't be able to be around to see if he did decide to die with Kikyo.
She placed a hand on his cheek and smiled up into his face. She blinked her eyes trying to clear her eyes of tears so that she could see his face clearly. His hair was blowing in the wind and she smiled more slightly.
“Good-bye, Inuyasha. Forever.” she whispered, and then did the one thing she'd never had the courage to do before. She kissed him lightly on the lips. He was frozen he didn't respond but Kagome knew it was better that way.
She ran off, away from Inuyasha and towards the God tree. She finally reached it and pulled out the quiver of arrows she'd hidden there when she had spotted Kikyo and Inuyasha together.
She pulled a single arrow out and studied the sharp arrow head on it. She closed her eyes and heaved a great sigh. This was it. She would never know the pain of unrequited love again.
The arrow pierced through the air and she struck herself in the heart. She gasped as pain shot through her entire body. She heard a cry.
“KAGOME!” Inuyasha was kneeling beside her, fear shining in his eyes. He had an arm around her back. He grabbed the arrow with a clawed hand and pulled it out. She let out an airy breath.
“Kagome, what the hell are you doing?!” he cried. Kagome closed her eyes, tears escaping her closed eyes. They seemed to move along with the blood coming from her chest. She put a hand up to the wound that she had caused herself.
“I-Inuyasha...this is...nothing...compared to...the pain...that you...put in my heart...with your...pledge to Kikyo.” Kagome whispered, she could feel her life fleeing from her body.
“W-What? K-Kagome...I-” she shook her head cutting off any apology he would've made, she didn't have the time.
“Promise that you'll never forget me...that I'll have a small......place in your heart.” she finished her sentence as she died.
Inuyasha felt his heart shatter. Yet another woman had died because of him. He howled in pain, he'd never felt such a guilt in his entire life. Kagome was gone and he couldn't reach her.
“So, she truly is my reincarnation. Following the same fate I did.” Kikyo's voice echoed through the woods. Inuyasha growled angrily, he was beginning to despise Kikyo. She really hadn't died because of him, after all she had not trusted him either.
But Kagome, she had trusted him with her life when Yura of the Hair had first attacked, and that was when Kaede had insisted that he not be trusted. But Kagome had ignored her and kept trusting him.
It had actually warmed his heart to realize that she didn't trust him just because he had the collar around his neck but because she wanted to trust him.
“No, Kikyo, she is nothing like you. She may share the same soul, but when she died her soul went no where near hell! But that is where you have made a place for yourself, but I WON'T GO WITH YOU! KAGOME NOW OWNS MY HEART!” as Inuyasha screamed this, a white glow surrounded him and energy pulsated from him.
He heard Kikyo's scream of rage fade off as she undoubtedly went back to the form of grave soil and ash. But what caught his attention the most was the heart beat that now came from Kagome's body.
A white ball of energy entered her body and Inuyasha recognized it as the part of Kagome's soul that Kikyo had kept from the younger miko. Kagome's eyes snapped open unseeingly and an unearthly scream came from her mouth.
Inuyasha hissed as it stung his ears. He realized that it wasn't just Kagome's cry that filled the air but also Kikyo's. But Kikyo was saying something and Inuyasha listened to her last dying words before merging back into Kagome.
“Damn you to hell!” she screamed her voice fading. Kagome's scream also disappeared and her eyes closed. Her breathing was labored and Inuyasha sighed in relief that she was just breathing.
But when her eyes didn't open he began to get worried. He shook her lightly and she groaned. Kikyo's voice then filled the air.
“You fool! You think that just because I don't have a body of my own that I'll be gone?!” he gasped as he was blown back by a burst of red energy that came from Kagome's body.
When the energy faded Inuyasha saw that Kagome was standing up but her eyes were a pure brown that held no life. Then they glowed red as Kikyo's bow flew into her hands.
“Now, Inuyasha, die!” Kikyo shouted through Kagome's mouth. But Kagome still had control over most of her mind and she was devastated by what Kikyo was making her do.
Inuyasha! Inuyasha! she screamed silently as she drew an arrow and pointed it at Inuyasha. He was in the exact same spot he'd been for fifty years. Kagome closed her eyes trying to regain control of her body and force Kikyo out. But she didn't have the strength to do it.
Kikyo forced Kagome's eyes back open. Iie! Iie! IIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiieeeeee! she screamed as the arrow struck Inuyasha in the heart.
“GET OUT!” Kagome shouted finally getting Kikyo's spirit out of her own body. Kagome fell to the ground panting extremely hard.
“Inuyasha! Inuyasha!” she sobbed looking down at the ground. Where had things gone so terribly wrong? She stood up and ran to Inuyasha. She ripped the arrow out and caught him as he fell to the ground.
Inuyasha! I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. None of this should've happened! I should've never come back! Kagome blinked back her tears as she realized that. Inuyasha would've been better off without her.
“No. Don't ever think that Kagome! You're thinking I'm better off without you, well I ain't! And I never will be! You are my strength Kagome!” Inuyasha whispered, sitting up slightly from her embrace.
She gasped, tears increasing as she looked at the wound that her arrow had caused. She shook her head in denial. He was wrong, he would've been better off without her. None of this would've happened if she hadn't shattered the jewel.
“Inuyasha...I don't deserve you...I deserve...death.” she whispered, looking at the arrow that she still held in her hand. She stood up and moved away from Inuyasha. She placed the arrow head against her heart once more. His eyes went wide.
He stood up, ignoring the pain in his chest. He ran to her, but was too late. She'd already thrust it into he heart.
“IIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeee!” he cried. She fell to her knees in front of him and looked up through pained eyes.
“I don't deserve a spot in your heart, but you'll always have a spot in mine, Inu-koishii.” she whimpered before falling to the ground completely. Inuyasha howled.
“Iie! Iie!” he whimpered like a dog, cradling the cold Kagome to his chest. She was dead. “Iie. I make a pledge to you, Kagome, I will find you! I will find you and make you understand that you didn't deserve this fate!
“I make a pledge of fate and love to you, Kagome, koishii.” he whispered to ears that didn't hear him. He closed his eyes and leaned against the God Tree. That's how their friends found them.
Both cold from death. Sango burst into tears at the sight of her best friend's blood and Miroku comforted her; the best he could.
“We'll meet again, Sango. I just know it.” he whispered to her as they left to inform the village of two of its protectors' deaths.
THE END...or is it?
The God Tree's leaves waved in the wind as two six year olds ran past each other. One with flowing white hair and cute little dog- ears. The other a human girl, her face red from the cold wind.
The spirit of the God Tree smiled slightly. They were back, and their journey had begun once again. From their former lives or as Prince and Princess it wasn't sure and yet they were back to complete their journey.
