`Perfect fucking timing. The first rumor of a shard in weeks and the slayer is injured. There's no way she can travel on that bum foot.' He grinned mentally as it dawned on him. `I guess it's just me and Kagome then.'

“Well, come on, let's get going.”

“Inuyasha,” Kagome said “Sango can't travel with her ankle. She can barely walk!”

“Obviously. We're going to leave her at the village so she can rest.”

“Inuyasha, as much as I would love to join you on your quest, I cannot leave my beloved Sango injured without a caretaker.”

“I'll be fine monk” The woman in question interjected with narrowed eyes. She was on to his plan before he even put it into motion.

“You see, she is going to need me to help her around, make her meals, and massage the…” His wandering hand found its way to her rear.

Sango let out a frustrated growl and hit him on the head.

“This is the thanks I get” he said letting out a dejected sigh.

Inuyasha rolled his eyes at the scene, it had been exactly what he expected. He looked at Kagome who was grabbing her backpack. “Ready?”

“Yep! Let's head out, it's still early.”

Once outside Inuyasha bent down to offer Kagome his back. He felt a small weight on his shoulder as orange fur came into sight.

“And what do you think you're doing brat?”

“Going with you. We have a shard to hunt down!” Shippo exclaimed, raising a clenched fist in the air.

“No way. Get lost runt.” Dropping shippo to the ground.

“Hey! Why can't I come! I always come with you. Please Kagome?!”

She couldn't help but smile at the small child. She gathered Shippo up into her arms and gave him a quick hug.

“I think you better stay here. I think Sango might need your help with Miroku” she said with a sly smile on her face.

“But who is going to help you with Inuyasha?” The kit asked in a cutting tone.

“WHY YOU-“

“Don't worry about us Shippo, we will be fine! We will be back before you know it.” She offered the child a bright smile and he looked down at his feet, only to look the hanyou in the eyes with a death glare.

“You better not make her cry Inuyasha!”

“You damn brat! Why-“Kagome silenced him by placing her hands on his shoulders, signaling him to bend down so he could carry her.

“Bye Shippo! Be good!” Kagome called as Inuyasha sped off into the forest. He was annoyed, and he didn't have anyone he could take it out on. This was getting off to a bad start.

But then he felt Kagome slide her arms around his neck, as she leaned up slightly to breathe into his ear.

“Don't worry about it Inuyasha, he was just teasing. Relax.”

He nodded as he felt the scowl from his face disappear.

The rest of the day was spent running at top speed to chase the light. Without the rest of the group he could go at a faster pace since he wasn't waiting for the others to catch up to him.

And, it made Kagome hold onto him tighter. With each leap she clutched her hands and squeezed her thighs trying to get a better grip on him. It was times like these he was glad she couldn't see the look on his face.

“You alright back there Kagome?”

The girl straightened up as best she could and leaned her head onto his shoulder.

“Yeah, I'm fine. We should probably look for a place for camp soon though. I'm getting hungry.”

“Feh. Weak human.”

“Well, this weak human brought ramen. But if you don't want any…”

“Quit complaining woman. We're going to stop up ahead.”

Camp was quickly made, and Kagomes pleasant chatter made dinner go by quickly. Once she had cleaned up she reached into her back pack and pulled out a book. Inuyasha mentally groaned. All he could do was wait while she read.

“Kagome.”

“…”

“Kagome.”

“…”

“KAGOME.”

“WHAT INUYASHA?! WHAT DO YOU WANT?”

“…Keh! Forget it!”

“Seriously? You've been bugging me while I've been studying and now that I'm answering you, you won't even tell me what you wanted?!”

Kagome thought for sure she felt a vein pop. Why he couldn't ever let her study seemed to be life's greatest mystery. Inuyasha looked at her with a sour face and turned his head.

He wasn't about to admit that he was feeling jealous of a book, because that would mean he felt jealous. Which he wasn't. He just didn't like it when other things monopolized Kagomes time, that's all. It made no difference if it was living or otherwise.

“If you're not going to tell me what you want, I'm going to finish stud- Inuyasha!”

Glancing over at her as she spoke, he rose quickly and picked Kagome up into his arms before leaping into the braches of a tree. She squirmed when he found a trustworthy branch and sat both of them down.

“You could have warned me you know.” She shot at him. Truthfully, she wasn't angry anymore, she just didn't like being taken by surprise. But all thoughts of that seemed to leave her mind when she felt two strong arms pull her closer to his chest. Inhaling deeply, she let out a contented sigh. A smirk tugged at the corners of Inuyashas mouth.

“It's been a while since it's been just us hasn't it?” She spoke softly, her words seemed laced with honey.

“Yeah.”

“Not that I don't love being around them or anything like that, but I like when its only you and me.” Kagome could feel her cheeks pink as Inuyasha found a similar shade. “It reminds me of when we first started hunting the shards together.”

No, it didn't remind Inuyasha of that at all. In those early days, he hadn't actually seen Kagome. He saw the face of the woman who had betrayed him, the woman that he loved. He sure as hell didn't want her around. In fact, once he had the jewel he was going to drop her from his back, effectively killing her. It made his stomach churn. If someone had told him then that the woman he was plotting to dump without a second thought would be the woman he had risked his life for time and again, the woman who had had earned his trust, the woman who he had scooped up and wrapped his arms around, burying his nose in her hair to better get her intoxicating scent…

He would have openly laughed and put his claws to that person. He had absolutely no need for any of that back then.

`Keh. Still don't.' He took another deep breath inhaling her scent, wild flowers with a subtle hint of his own. 'Well, maybe.'

“I guess.” He responded uncomfortably. “Things are different than they were then. But I know what you mean. It's nice. No noisy brat, no lecherous monk, no pissed off Sango…”

This earned a giggle from the girl in his arms. “It makes you appreciate the quiet more” she said as she nuzzled her head into his chest. Inuyasha let out a happy rumble. Without his pesky companions interfering, he had Kagome all to himself. He could do what he pleased without feeling like he was on display for their entertainment. To prove his point, he placed a small kiss on her head. Kagome smiled.

“Yeah, your right, things are different. But in a good way.” She let out a yawn and stretched her body along his. “Can... can we sleep like this Inuyasha?”

He looked down at the woman in his arms and pulled her closer as he felt a blush stain his cheeks.

“Sure.” He answered as he shrugged off his fire rat and covered her small body with it. He hoped she didn't hear the slight tremor in his voice. Kagome turned in his lap and placed one hand on his face and smiled. It was as if his insides melted. He was unable to do anything but watch as she brought her beautiful full lips…

To the other side of his face. He was caught between being elated at the kiss and disappointed that that was all he was given.

“Goodnight Inuyasha.” She smiled up at him again before resting her head on his chest. Snapping back to reality, he realized the chaste peck wasn't enough. Feeling bold, he took her chin in his hand, forcing eye contact. Kagome worried her bottom lip, a move he knew too well. He couldn't help but smile at her nervous behavior. He leaned in and kissed her.

It started gently, licking her lip, asking for permission. Once her state of shock wore off she readily complied, deepening the kiss, eager to prove her need. It always took him off guard- that she seemed to have a need for him. When they finally broke apart for air they were panting, and Inuyasha knew that if he didn't stop soon he was going to lose balance and fall out of the tree.

Giving her one last kiss, and telling her goodnight, he leaned his head back and closed his eyes, sleep the farthest thing on his mind.
