"Down New Mexico way, something about the open road, I knew that he was looking for some Indian blood, and find a little in you, find a little in me, we may be on this road, but we're just impostors in this country, you know. So we go along and we said we'd fake it, feel better with Oliver Stone, till I almost smacked him - seemed right that night, and I don't know what takes hold out there in the desert cold, these guys think they must try and just get over on us. . ."

InuYasha leaned against the rusty door of the old toolshed, his normally white hair now turned a deep, clear black and tied back in a neat, slick ponytail. He ran his tongue across his teeth, brushing away a few pieces of last night's meal. The breeze was cool as it fluttered in from the cracks and holes of the building, despite the sunset's blazing rays which poured in through the dusty windows. The chill of early November had begun to settle in, causing the trees outside to turn a warm, syrupy gold and fall softly to the ground in a delicate, graceful dance of death. InuYasha felt a chill sweep over him, but suppressed the urge to shiver.

"So, there you have it. That's the story of how Kagome and I came to be."

Matt still stared at the ground, too ashamed to meet InuYasha's eyes. He still hadn't gotten over his confession to InuYasha from the previous night. He didn't want to be here now, not here, having to hear all this. When he had brought InuYasha's food, he had stopped him, urging him to stay. So he stayed. But now he wanted run, as far as he could run, scream, cry, hit things, get all his emotions out. But all he could do for the moment was sit there, staring at the ground, trying to comprehend what the half-demon was telling him.

"Your . . . your hair . . ."

"It's the period of the new moon," said InuYasha, off-handedly. "I lose all my demon powers for an evening. It'll be back to normal tomorrow, though."

"Oh." Nothing surprised Matt anymore, not after all that had happened. He didn't want to bring himself to ask the question that was burning a hole in his chest, but if he didn't get it out soon, he'd be consumed in flame. "So. . . you went into the well. . . to go back to Kagome. . . but you ended up here?"

"Yeah," InuYasha replied. "But the real question is: Why did I end up here? I was supposed to end up in the sacred well at the temple. It doesn't make sense."

"None of this makes sense," said Matt, looking up into InuYasha's face with a half-glare. "It's all illogical. I refuse to believe. It's ridiculous. A fairytale."

"Whether you believe it or not doesn't matter, it's the truth and that's how it is. You probably don't believe in ghosts or spirits either, but they exist, and they don't need your belief to ensure their existence."

"Just shut up," said Matt. "I don't want to hear it. Just go, go to Japan, find Kagome, and leave me the hell alone."

"Hey! What's gotten into you?" shouted InuYasha, clenching his fists.

"Nothing," said Matt, fighting hard to hold back tears. "It's nothing."

"Don't lie to me and tell me it's nothing! If it's nothing, why are you acting like that?"

"BECAUSE!" screamed Matt, rising to his feet, tears splattering down his cheeks.

"BECAUSE WHY?" said InuYasha, taking a step toward him.

Matt lowered his voice. "You just don't get it, do you?"

"Would you stop acting like a stupid, emotional girl and tell me what's wrong!"

"SHUT UP!" screamed Matt again. "SHUT UP, YOU PATHETIC IDIOT!" He clenched his teeth and lowered his gaze to the ground again, watching his tears sink into the dirty floor of the shed. "I told you I loved you, because I had hoped that you might feel something for me. And then you go and tell me all this? How am I supposed to feel? Tell me that." He quivered.

InuYasha blinked. "I . . . I don't know what to tell you . . ."

"You've made that quite obvious," said Matt with a sardonic laugh, brushing away a few tears with his wrist.

InuYasha continued to stare at him blinkingly. "Do you . . . really feel that way about me?"

"No, InuYasha, I just said it for kicks!" said Matt, throwing him a cold glare.

"I'm sorry . .. ," said InuYasha, looking away.

"What?" snapped Matt.

"I said I'm sorry." He rocked back and forth on his feet. "This is something new to me. I never really knew that . . . men could have feelings for other men. I knew they could engage in . . . intercourse, but that was as far as it went. I never knew about the emotional aspect."

"Well congratulations, now you do." Matt crossed his arms, still staring down at the ground. "Tell me one thing, though."

InuYasha looked up at him. "What's that?"

"When I kissed you . . . did you feel anything? Anything at all?"

The chilled air was silent for a few moments as InuYasha gazed intently at Matt's lowered head. "Yes."

Matt slowly raised his head and looked up at him. "What? What did you feel?"

"Something strange. Something unusual. This feeling that I've never had before . . . I don't know how to describe it."

Matt's eyes widened a bit as he stared at the pondering creature.

"I was surprised. I felt . . . mellow. I felt calm. But at the same time, I could feel my heart racing. I felt scared, yet excited. It was just . . . strange."

Matt shivered, his lip trembling. "Was it . . . a good feeling? Or a bad feeling?"

"I don't know," replied InuYasha. "I think . . . it was good . . . good, but strange."

Matt dropped his head again and gave a small laugh. "I suppose you've never been kissed by a guy before?"

"No. I haven't."

"InuYasha . . . how do you feel about . . . me?"

InuYasha gave a surprised look. "What do you mean?"

"Exactly what I say," replied Matt, "how do you feel about me?"

There was another pause as InuYasha chewed a fingernail. The sky was darkening into a dark, crystalline blue, and the first few blinking stars had opened their eyes upon the early evening. They would have to shine much brighter than usual tonight, to compensate for the moonless sky.

"I care about you, Matt. I care about you a lot. I enjoy being with you. If you were in danger, I would do whatever I could to protect you. I have feelings for you. But . . . if I gave you the answer you wanted to hear, it would be a lie." He closed his eyes. His face was dimly illuminated in the scattered starlight of early evening against the backdrop of his long, dark hair. "This love . . . this kind of love . . . is something new to me. I think that, in time, I may come to feel something like it, but not the feeling itself. You don't learn how to love, it's inborn. I was born to love the way I do, and you were born to love the way you do. We can't help it, nor can we change it. That's just the way things are, and that's the way they'll be."

As far back as he could remember, InuYasha could not remember ever speaking to someone like this, not even Kagome. He felt so soft, so gentle. He felt so changed. And yet, he still felt like himself.

Matt nodded. "Yeah, I . . . I guess you're right. But, thank you for being honest with me. I knew it would be too much to hope for . . . that someone like you could fall in love with me . . ."

"Don't say that," said InuYasha, walking over to Matt and putting a protective arm around him. "It's not you, it's me."

Matt stared up at him for a moment, then burst into tears again, burying his face into the dog demon's shoulder. "Oh, InuYasha!"

InuYasha wrapped his arms around the crying boy, hugging him protectively. Matt . . . oh, Matt . . . I'm so sorry. . .

"Hey, Matt," he said, looking down at him. "Let's go outside and look at the stars. Mm?"

Matt brushed away his tears and nodded, "OK."

"Do we have to keep looking for constellations? My eyes hurt, and it's dark." Matt rubbed his eyes.

"Fine," said InuYasha, plopping down on the ground. "What do you want to do?" His normal irritated voice had once more returned.

"Let's talk," said Matt, sitting down on the cool grass beside him.

"About what?" said InuYasha, raising an eyebrow.

"I dunno. Just stuff."

"What kind of stuff?"

"Anything." Matt closed his eyes and leaned against him. InuYasha looked down. "Matt?"

"Hm?"

InuYasha put his finger under Matt's chin, lifting his face up to meet his own. He leaned in and kissed him softly, giving a long, slow, contented sigh. Matt pulled back and looked up at him. "InuYasha?"

The half demon smiled. "I did say that I cared about you . . ."

Matt twined his arms slowly around InuYasha's torso, pressing his face into his neck and kissing him tenderly. InuYasha stroked a gentle hand down Matt's back, gripping the fabric of his shirt upwards, delicately pulling it off. Matt blushed. "I don't want you to do anything you don't want to . . ."

"But I do want to. . ." InuYasha gently forced the boy down on the ground and climbed on top of him, leaning in for another warm, slow kiss. Matt lifted his legs gently, gripping InuYasha's hips with his knees. "InuYasha, I . . ."

"Shhh, don't say anything . . ."

And the two made love in the grass on the cool, moonless, yet starlit November night.
