"and I'm so sad,
like a good book
I can't put this day back,
A Sorta Fairytale with you,
A Sorta Fairytale with you,
I could pick back up
Whenever I feel . . ."

It was unusually warm for late September. The sun was bright and the wind swished through the trees, making the glittery light shimmer down upon the grown like several golden butterflies. The clean perfume of grass lingered in the air and the crystal blue sky reflected ocean-like in the eyes of the teenage girl named Kagome.
She stood at the well, tracing a soft finger along one of the stones. Her hands were always clean, never torn or flawed, and were always, always soft. Her uniform had been neatly pressed just that morning by her mother, and was crisp and clean and a perfect fit. The only make-up she wore was a shimmery white eyeshadow and a pale rosepetal pink lipstick. She smelled of fresh gardenias and cherry blossoms. Her entire aura was of springtime, quite fitting for this spring-like day in the midst of early autumn.
For the first time in her life, she felt a closure. It was as if chains had been lifted from her, chains and bricks and locks and restraints, and she could run freely without anything to hold her back. She wanted to laugh, yet simultaneously wanted to cry. Letting go of something that was once so special is never easy.
He never loved me. It was hard to admit to herself, though she knew it deep down in her heart for so long. He cared for me, but he never loved me as I loved him. It was all a travesty, a betrayal, a lie. But it had felt so wonderful. She had been so happy. But now, all that remained was the cold, empty, bitter wind of freedom. She was free, but as all other things, freedom came at a cost, and that cost was loneliness.
Kikyo. Why Kikyo? She was Kikyo, or so they had told her. But she was nothing like Kikyo. Kikyo was strong, elegant, graceful, hard, independent, and wise. Kagome was small and fragile, clumsy and dumb, and the most dependant creature alive. She was nothing compared to this extraordinary woman known as Kikyo. She did not deserve to house this woman's soul. It was because of her the Shikon Jewel had been destroyed, the one thing Kikyo was sworn to protect. She could do nothing right, not even love. Everything she touched always fell apart at some time or another. But she had been so certain this was her destiny, but once again, she was wrong.
"This is where I close the book," she said. "This is the last chapter. It's over."
"Kagome. . ." The white-haired half-demon shivered. His eyes glistened with the prelude of tears.
"You don't love me. You never loved me. You only loved Kikyo."
"I. . . I did love Kikyo, but. . . she's not Kikyo anymore. She's not the Kikyo I knew. You are that woman now."
"You care for me only because I am like someone you loved?" It was hard to keep from exploding into a sob as she said this.
"No, I love YOU for YOU, Kagome, I. . . I love you with all my heart."
Kagome looked up and stared at him for a few moments. "You said that before, remember? And then you went after Kikyo all over again."
"I was stupid, OK!" He bit his fist, blood trickling down his wrist. "What about Shippo? What about Sango and Kilala? What about Miroku, or Kaede? You would leave them too?"
"They have their own lives now, now that the jewel shards have been recovered. They have no need of me and will soon forget me. You have no need of me now. You have Kikyo and you will be happy."
"Kikyo is dead to me. She is no more. I don't need HER, I need YOU!"
"I'm tired of this lame song-and-dance over and over again!" She turned her head so he would not see her tears. "You tell me this and yet it is always a lie. I can no longer trust you, InuYasha, and when there's no trust, there is no love."
"Do you still love me?" His voice was quiet.
"I would like to say no, but deep down in my heart. . . I am yet unsure. But in time, I will come to love another, of that I'm certain." She lied.
"Kagome. . ." InuYasha went to embrace her, but Kagome threw up her arms protectively. "Don't do this to me," she said. "Please, if you care anything about me at all, let me go quietly."
"But Kagome, please. . . you don't know what you're doing to me, what you're doing to yourself. We need each other!"
"How can I trust you this time? How can I be sure you really mean what you say? I'll come back, then Kikyo will return and sweep you away again. It will happen again, I know it will, and next time I won't be able to handle it. It's better this way, for both of us."
"I love you Kagome! You're the only person in the world I want to be with! I swear it!"
There was another pause, but a longer one. The breeze was cool against their skin, blowing their hair about softly. Kagome's flowery scent lingered in the air as the silence continued to hang awkwardly between them. Then, Kagome spoke.
"It was my destiny to come here, to keep the Shikon jewel from falling into the hands of evil. We have accomplished this task, and there is no more need of me. Once I leave, I will no longer have possession of the jewel and I will no longer be able to return. The well will once more be just an old well to me, no longer a gate, no longer a pathway. But you. . . you have the jewel. If you feel you can't live without me, you can return. But I can't promise that I will be there waiting for you. If there is someone else in my life, they will come first, not you. I won't wait for you. After I leave, unless you happen to return, you will be gone forever. Do not follow me. Give it time, think on it. And if you truly love me, you will return. But, if not . . . good-bye."
"Kagome. . ." InuYasha spoke breathlessly.
"I said Good-bye, InuYasha." Tears ran down her swan white cheeks, and she trembled softly. She turned to well and placed her hands on the edge. She turned to give one last look. "I really did love you." Then, she was gone. Gone back to her own time, no more a shadow of the future in the realm of the past. She was gone forever.
"Kagome. . ." He stood there, lips quivering as tears welled up in his eyes for the fist time in many, many years. He would return for her, he would do it soon. But would she be there, ready to accept him with open arms? This thought clouded his heart, and he felt truly hopeless. Everyone he had ever loved had now vanished, and he was alone.
"Kagome. . ." The sun shone, the breezes blew, the grasses and flowers and trees danced, and the air was thick with the scent of gardenias and cherry blossoms.
"KAGOME!"

Well, I hope you liked this chapter! This is the first part of why InuYasha ended up where he did, and more will be explained in the next chapter.
Also, just let me say, I LOVE Kagome. InuYasha/Kagome is one of the only het pairings I'm quite fond of. However, I have a sheer and utter loathing for Kikyo. As a matter of fact, she is one of my all-time least favorite anime characters EVER. So, in case you assumed otherwise from the fic, I just wanted to set it straight.
Thanks for reading! * huggles * ^-^!
