It had been just a little over two weeks since they had set out on their way to find the snake demon. Sarah was depressed thinking she would never see home again. Kagome knew how she felt and tried her best to keep her mind off the subject. Everyone stopped to rest by a stream. As everyone was relaxing a breeze carried a familiar scent to InuYasha's nose. He jumped up facing the wind.
“What is it?” Kagome asked.
“I smell Naraku.” InuYasha replied. “But there is the smell of blood also. It isn't human.”
Everyone took off running following InuYasha. Soon they arrived at the entrance to the cave. Kagome grabbed a few flashlights from her bag and they used them as they entered the cave. They came upon the body of the demon, but it was not dead. The upper half was still struggling to breathe and hold on.
“I'll bet Naraku did this.” Miroku said.
“He probably took the jewel shard too.” Sango added.
The demon began to laugh interrupted by coughing. “Do you plan to seek him out?” she grinned.
“She's not dead!” Kagome shouted.
The demon struggled to regain her composure as best she could. She was dying but she would give it her best shot to kill off this half demon. Had it not been for him none of this would have happened. If he had not injured her she would not have had to take refuge in this cave. She lunged at him bearing her fangs. InuYasha meet her neck with his sword cutting off her head.
“The only way to kill a snake is to cut off its head.” InuYasha scoffed.
The head of the demon flew through the air, bounced on the floor of the cave, and then rolled over beside Sarah's feet. Sarah cringed but the demons mouth was still open and in the right position to bite. And she did, she sank her fangs into Sarah's ankle with her last bit of consciousness.
“Sarah get away from it!” Kagome shouted, but it was too late.
Sarah screamed and kicked her leg as the head of the demon fell. She ran out of the cave into the daylight to take a good look at her leg to see what damage had been done. She was bleeding and there were two holes in her ankle. The pain set in and she began to feel the sting of venom in her leg. The others soon joined her and Kagome knelt down to take a look at the wound. Kagome took bandages and first aid supplies from her bag. She also mixed a potion to held deal with the venom.
“It will take a while for the antidote to work. Just try and rest.” Kagome said.
Miroku and Sango helped Sarah onto Kirara's back and they moved away from the cave. Sarah spent the rest of the day in and out of consciousness. Everyone rested and waited to see if she was going to recover. Sarah tossed and turned as she lay sleeping. Every once in a while she would let out a whimper of pain. Kagome began to worry after several hours.
“I don't understand why it is taking so long for the antidote to work.” She brought to everyone's attention. “It is the antidote Jeninji gave us for Kirara. And I have used it for Miroku when he was infected by the poisonous insects. It never took them longer than a couple of hours to recover.”
“Maybe this poison is more toxic Kagome.” Sango said reassuring her.
“Maybe, but I think it would be a good idea if we went back to Kiade's village in the morning.” Kagome said.
“Well what ever is going on she is fighting it.” Miroku said as he watched Sarah convulse in the sleeping bag.
In the mean time while everyone was watching carefully over Sarah, InuYasha had wondered back towards the cave looking for some clue of Naraku. As he approached the entrance to the cave he began to smell a familiar scent.
“Sesshoumaru!” he exclaimed. He turned to see his brother standing behind him. He drew out his sword.
“I am not here for you, InuYasha.” Sesshoumaru said sternly. “The demon, I am here for the demon.”
“Ha!” InuYasha scoffed at his older brother. “You are too late. I've already killed it.”
“Where is Naraku?” Sesshoumaru asked. “I picked up his scent also.”
“He's gone.” InuYasha confirmed to his older brother.
“Do you mean to tell me that you let Naraku get away by battling with a lesser demon?” Sesshoumaru began to anger. “You are a fool InuYasha!”
“As if it were any of your business, He was already gone when I got here!” InuYasha growled.
“I have no time for this!” Sesshoumaru said furiously. “We both know I shall be the one to destroy Naraku.” Sesshoumaru transformed into a ball of light and was gone in an instant leaving InuYasha puzzled.
“Why would Sesshoumaru be after that demon anyway?” InuYasha whispered to himself.
The sun was setting quickly in the evening sky. InuYasha returned to the others at their camp for the night. Kagome informed him that they were planning to return to Kiade the next morning to seek her help with Sarah's condition.
That nights as the stars blanketed the sky it was quiet and everyone was soundly asleep. Even InuYasha had drifted off sleeping. Sarah's eyes opened. Her body was in great pain. Her insides felt as if they were being twisted and her body felt as if it were being compressed in a vice. Her skin felt as if it were on fire. She sat up looking around seeing everyone was asleep she decided she would distance herself as not to wake them. She walked quickly away from the camp fire. Just ahead of her was a stream. She placed her hands in the stream and let the cool water was over them. It gave her some release from the burning of her skin.
Sarah walked into the stream and lay down in it to help with the burning of her skin. She then felt as if she was being pushed from her own body. It began to rise slowly from the stream. Her hair began to turn black with streaks of blue. Her skin began to change as well. Her face was outlined with a dark blue as it began to lighten as it spread further from the edges of her face. Her eyes became completely blue with only the black of her pupils showing. Her skin on her arms, legs, and torso began to change itself into a shell of armor. Her body floated through the air over to the bank of the stream and lightly landed on its feet.
It was no longer Sarah.
“Finally I am free.” She said. “What is this place? Nevertheless I must get Iris.” As she stood there on the bank of the small stream another presence came to her attention. She turned around to see Sesshoumaru standing behind her.
“And who are you?” she asked. She could sense great power in this demon. She began to walk towards him. “What a worthy opponent you shall make.” She grinned.
Sesshoumaru watched her cautiously. “Who are you?” he replied. “You reek of human scent, but you are not human.”
“No.” she confirmed. “I am far from human, but this form, this shell will do for now. You may refer to me as Akuma.”
Sesshoumaru drew his demon sword Tokijin. Akuma laughed, “You dare to challenge me.” Before Sesshoumaru knew what was happening Akuma was standing before him holding his arm back and his sword lay in the grass yards away from him. He growled angered by this and his eyes began to glow red.
“Changing into your true form will not help you.” She said overconfident. Her eyes began to glow as well. “I am from a time before your forefathers. I walked this earth when humans were almost nonexistent. I have watched from the netherworld as they have come to over run this earth because fools like you have failed to keep their numbers in check. I am here to release the ancient ones and restore this world as it should be! If you oppose me I will exterminate you as well!” She grabbed Sesshoumaru by his neck and flung him back. By the time he landed and looked back to counter this attack she was gone.
He could feel her demon presents, but the demon inside had no scent as most demons did. However he could smell the human which she possessed. He began to follow her scent tracking her. “How dare she think I would let her escape!” he growled irately to himself. He tracked her all night only to end of returning almost exactly where they had meet earlier in the night. It was dawn the next morning when he found her, but it wasn't her.
When he arrived he found InuYasha and Kagome standing over the human girl. “What happened to her?” Kagome asked InuYasha. “Do you think maybe she just wondered off in the night?”
“The poison has probably made her delirious. We should get her back.” He answered.
“So you know this girl?” Sesshoumaru interrupted them.
InuYasha drew his sword and faced Sesshoumaru ready for battle. “What do you care? She's just a human.”
“So you do not know then InuYasha.” Sesshoumaru replied resting his hand on the hilt of his sword. “This human is more than what meets the eye. She is possessed.”
“If she were possessed then I would be able to smell the demon in her! What kind of fool do you think I am?!” InuYasha replied.
“Exactly InuYasha, you are a fool indeed!” Sesshoumaru replied and drew out his demon sword pointing it at InuYasha. “She must be dealt with InuYasha and to kill you as well will make this all the sweeter.” An evil grin came to his lips.
InuYasha stood in front of Sarah's unconscious body as Kagome was knelt down trying to revive her. A small grown came from Sarah's lips as she regain consciousness. Her clothes were tattered and torn and small amounts of blood stained the bottom of her kimono. She began to stand with Kagome's support. Her eyes immediately fixed on the demon lord standing on a few yards from them. She was in awe of him. Never in all her life had she seen such a beautiful man. His face was soft and he looked delicate, but his aura was masculine. Sesshomaru's golden eyes broke from a glare at InuYasha to her deep blue eyes.
“We have to get out of here.” Kagome said breaking the concentrated stare of Sarah.
Sarah did not argue as the signs of a battle beginning caught her eye. Both demons posed to attack holding swords aiming for each other. Sesshoumaru was a bit off guard at the sight of the girl. Her pale skin was unlike any he had ever seen before, a lighter color than any other human he had ever seen before. Her long blonde hair caught in a breeze swaying behind her as she walked away with Kagome. And never in all his many years had he seen eyes like hers. Deep and blue as if they had been taken from the blue depths of the ocean, innocence and purity poured from them as if her stare could warm you on the coolest night. If the eyes were a window to the soul, hers could lead you to heaven. In an instant Sesshoumaru put away his sword, turned and walked away ignoring InuYasha's threats and yelling behind him.
“Hey! Sesshoumaru this isn't over! Get back here and fight me!” InuYasha barked fiercely.
“InuYasha.” Kagome said calmly. “Let's go. We need to get her to Kiade as soon as we can.”
InuYasha reluctantly redirected his attention. He took Kagome and Sarah on his back and ran as fast as he could back to camp where they met up with the others and headed back to Kiade's village. It took all day but they soon arrived at the village. It should have taken them two days, but with the help of InuYasha and Kirara they were able to cut time in half.
