Everyone made their way back to where the villagers had found Sarah the day before. Sarah searched eagerly with her eyes trying to find some sign of the opening she had crawled out of and found nothing. `I couldn't have crawled out of the well.' Sarah thought to herself. `The well is several yards from where I remember surfacing.' She kept walking around and looking for something familiar and then she came upon a spot where she felt something. It was an odd feeling, a kind of tingling ran through her body when she stood on this spot. Without her notice Miroku approached from behind her.
“This spot gives me a tainted feeling.” He said. “There is some evil aura coming from this spot.” Kagome and Sango gathered with them and listened to Miroku's words.
“I feel it too.” Kagome agreed.
At that moment the ground beneath their feet began to shake. Everyone stepped back as the ground opened up and a snake like demon came forth from the ground. Its upper body looked like that of a human woman, but she had six arms. Her hair was long and red, her eyes seemed to glow a bright green. The rest of her body looked like that of a brown snake. She rose high into the air before them.
“Who dares to disturb me!” she shouted angrily as she looked them over.
“She has a jewel shard!” Kagome shouted. “I can see it! It's in her forehead, right between her eyes!” Kagome reached for her bow, but she had left it behind in the village.
Sango drew her weapon and sent it flying though the air at the beast, but she was able to stop it in mid air and flung it away. “Impossible!” she exclaimed. “This demon uses some kind of magic!”
“Leave it to me.” Miroku stated boldly as sent sutras flying toward the demon before them. But when they reached the demon they dissolved before they touched her. “A barrier, she's using some kind of barrier to ward off my sutras.”
“You humans can't touch me.” The demon laughed. And her attention turned to Sarah. “You!” she shouted. “You foiled my spell!”
“I-I don't know what you are talking about.” Sarah stuttered.
“You insolent human I had used all the power I had left along with this jewel shard to open a portal to another world, but you! You passed through it before I had a chance to! The portal closed and my powers were drain. I didn't even have the power to attack you for foiling my plan at that time. But now I have rested and my powers are almost back completely.” The demon informed everyone. “I shall have your life, your blood for penance!” She said as she used her long body to push herself through the air towards Sarah.
Miroku stepped in front of Sarah and the others holding his staff out and chanting a barrier spell. At that moment a flash of red came from out of nowhere. A voice yelled, “Wind Scar!” and there was a large dust cloud. Then the figure dressed in red landed in right in front of the barrier Miroku had put up. Sarah could only see it from the back, but it appeared to be a man with long white hair, but it looked like there was something in his hair. The demon had been wounded by the attack and took the opportunity to disappear in the cloud of dust.
“InuYasha,” Kagome exclaimed.
Miroku sensing it was safe closed the barrier. “I'm glad to see you, InuYasha.” He said. “That demon had overpowered all of us, and I was afraid my barrier might not be of any use.”
InuYasha turned around facing them. Sarah noticed that there wasn't anything in his hair, it was his ears. She also noticed that he had fangs and very long claws. She stared in amazement for a moment before realizing she was staring at him.
“Let me guess,” she interrupted as Miroku had been explaining what the demon had said just before InuYasha arrived. “You are a demon too, right?”
“You gotta problem with that?” InuYasha growled and glared at her.
“InuYasha, I am sure she doesn't mean anything by it. She's not use to seeing demons.” Kagome answered for Sarah.
“Touchy about it, ain't he?” Sarah leaned over and whispered to Sango. Sango made no reply and just gave Sarah a wide eye look.
Everyone walked back to the village and entered Kaide's hut. Kagome explained what happened while they had been gone. Kiade sat and listened attentively drawing her own conclusion.
“This demon used a spell to open a doorway between the two worlds, therefore we must find out everything we can in hope of reopening the doorway so Sarah can return home.” She concluded.
“I wonder why the demon was seeking entrance into another world.” Sango stated.
“We know that Naraku has been seeking out even more powerful demons to absorb to make himself stronger, and for that demon to survive the wind scar she must be very powerful. Perhaps she was trying to escape Naraku.” Miroku said.
“I suggest you capture the demon if it is possible and try to make her tell you the spell she used to open the portal. Without that spell Sarah will not be able to return home.” Kiade informed them.
“Yes we should go after her.” Kagome agreed. “We need to get that jewel shard before Naraku has a chance to.”
“Then it's settled.” InuYasha said standing up. “We'll go after the demon first thing in the morning.”
InuYasha retreated outside the hut while the others prepared to go to sleep. Sarah laid on the floor of the hut staring up at the ceiling. `What if we can't find the demon? What if I never get to go home? Am I stuck here…forever?' Sarah did not sleep well on this night. Her mind full of thoughts of home, she had not even been away from home for a day and here she was already homesick.
The next morning came quickly and Sarah had gotten almost no sleep. Everyone had a quick breakfast of stew that had been made the night before. Kagome and Kiade found Sarah some old clothes that she could wear. Fall was quickly approaching and she was not dressed to keep warm on the cool nights that were ahead of them. With the last few preparations the group began making their way from the village into InuYasha's forest and followed the tracks of the demon.
Sarah allowed everyone else to walk ahead of her. She was beginning to wish that this was all a dream and that she would wake up soon at home in her bed. Kagome noticed Sarah was falling behind, and the expression she carried on her face was one of worry. Kagome slowed her pace allowing Miroku, Sango, Shippo, and Kirara to pass by her. She began walking beside Sarah.
“Don't worry about it Sarah. We'll get you home somehow.” Kagome said trying to reassure her.
“I really appreciate all of this.” Sarah replied.
“Ah don't mention it.” Kagome said. “We have to get the jewel shard anyway.”
Sarah watch the ground as it passed beneath her feet as she was walking. Though Kagome's words were some what comforting, the fear she would be stuck here still lingered in her mind. The group continued walking throughout the day but there was no sign of the demon. Although it had only been one day Sarah's fear that they would never find the demon grew stronger in her mind.
With the sun going down they made camp in the woods. Kagome boiled water for noodles she had brought in her bag. Sarah did not finish eating all of her meal, she was too worried. Shippo noticed this and asked Sarah if he could finish them for her. Sarah agreed and handed the remaining noodles to Shippo.
Sleep did not come easy for Sarah this night. She tossed and turned in her sleeping bag that Kagome had brought back for her. The stars sparkled high above them in the sky above. Sarah lay there staring at the blanket of stars that covered the sky. After a while she began counting sheep in her mind. Something she learned as a child would help to clear her mind and make it easier to fall asleep. And she finally went to sleep.
Meanwhile the snake demon was slithering through the forest looking for another place she might hide. Even though InuYasha had not seriously injured her she did have bruises and deep scratches from the encounter. This was not something most demons or humans had been able to do before.
`That half demon brat.' She thought to herself. `The next time I encounter him I will kill him first. That blade he carries could have done more damage. The humans will be no problem to get rid of, but I have to separate him from the rest to make sure those others do not interfere with his death.'
She soon came upon a cave. It was dark and dank. There was no sign of life inside. She crawled deep into the cave. It seemed like it continued on forever, but she had crawled deep enough she felt secure and began to rest. Her body was tired and it would take some time for her to heal herself.
After a week of hiding in the cave hunger began to eat away at the demon. It was unusual for her to hide in such a place and not see even a rat. She slowly and cautiously inched her way out into the open to search for some unlucky prey. It was night and there was no moon. She was able to catch a few squirrels and a rabbit to calm her hunger, but she was starving and it did little to subdue her hunger. She crept on almost completely silent.
She began to smell human in the air. Her mouth began to water. It had been a long time since she had tasted human blood. Certainly a good size man or woman would fill her hunger. She slithered toward a flickering camp fire only yards form where she stood. She rose up her upper body hiding in the bushes to see who her prey was. To her discontent there was only a small girl and a little green toad sleeping by the fire.
`Damn.' She thought. `But it is better than nothing. That toad will be tasteless, but the girl might be enough to fill my gut. What an odd pair of traveling companions.'
She eased herself into striking distance of the girl. Her eyes widened with anticipation and her mouth watered. But something wasn't right here. She began to feel a cold stare from someone's eyes behind her. She turned to see who it was that dare to stare at her in such a manner. Behind her stood a tall man with long white hair, his eyes were golden brown, and he had markings of a high class demon on his face. He stood with his hand on the hilt of one of two swords.
“You won't be very tasty.” She said. “But I shouldn't let you go to waste.”
Sesshoumaru drew his sword. It began to glow a light blue. “Get away from them.” He said calmly.
The snake demon could sense the power coming from the sword. She knew it would take more power to fight him than she had thought. She knew she was not back to her old self and still weak from healing her wounds and hunger. She realized that in any other case she would fight him and in her mind most likely defeat him. But now was not the case. She darted off into the tree with Sesshomaru following closely. He was faster than she had thought he would be.
The demon soon arrived at the cave and darted deep inside as fast as she could. But Sesshoumaru did not follow. Instead in a great ball of light he passed right by the cave. How strange she thought this was. A few moments later he passed back by returning to his companions. He was walking this time and still he passed right by the cave entrance.
Over the next week her wounds healed and she regained her strength by feasting herself on rodents and rabbits that she found in the forest. She returned to her cave for the last time to rest up before going in search of that half demon that had injured her so. She curled up into a ball and closed her eyes. But from behind her she felt a presence. She turned to see a man standing there. He had dark hair and eyes. His body was unusual. It had amour and extensions that were only found on demons.
“Who are you?” she asked.
“Naraku.” He replied. “I think you have been hiding in my cave long enough.”
“Your cave?” she replied confused.
“I let you stay here hidden in my barrier because you hold a jewel shard.” He smiled an evil grin. “And now it will be mine.”
She quickly uncurled her long body and made for the entrance to escape only to realize there was a woman standing before her. She had short dark hair pulled back away from her face and red eyes. She was dressed in a white kimono with red markings on it. The woman raised her arm hold an open fan. “Dance of Blades!” she said. Unseen blades of wind began to cut her body into pieces. The upper human shaped half of her body lay on the floor of the cave still alive. Naraku walked over to it and an extension of his body penetrated her skull touching the jewel shard.
“You were smart to run.” He grinned. “But you should have left here and not returned when you realized that this place was hidden from others for a reason.” And he pulled the jewel shard from the demons head leaving her to die. Naraku and Kagura left the cave.
