That afternoon as the sun set on the horizon, they placed Sarah's sleeping body inside the hut and sealed the door. InuYasha shied away from everyone else and transformed himself. Everyone sat waiting to see if the new spells were going to conceal Akuma.
“It's too quiet out there.” InuYasha said pacing the floor.
“Maybe the spell has worked.” Kagome said watching the mortal InuYasha as he paced. Inside there was a part of her that wished he could stay like this. His long black hair, his human hands, and no fangs, but whatever his form her love for him was the same.
“I am going to check it out.” He said impatiently as he headed for the doorway.
As they approached the small hut they began to hear sobbing coming from inside the hut. “Hello? Is there someone there?” a tear choked voice came from inside the hut.
“Please help, please get me out of here.”
“Sarah?” Kagome shouted.
“Kagome!” Sarah replied. “Please let me out of here.”
InuYasha and Miroku wasted no time prying loose the boards that sealed the entrance. The light of the full moon shined inside the small hut illuminating the corner where Sarah was curled up sobbing uncontrollably. She jumped up and walked quickly outside the hut.
“What's going on? Why was I closed up in there?” Sarah asked frantically drying her eyes.
“Come inside Kaide's hut. You need to eat and I'll explain everything.” Kagome answered.
Inside the hut Sarah ate and Kagome explain why they had sealed her inside the hut. She explained what had been happening over the last several nights. And she was regretful to inform her that they had no yet found a solution to this problem. She also had to explain InuYasha's new appearance.
“I see.” Sarah said. “I have been in a dark place in my dreams.”
Everyone fell silent as Sarah seemed to fall back into that dark place in her mind. “Kagome I think I would like to take a walk. Will you join me?”
Kagome nodded and the two made their way outside. InuYasha was quick to follow them. He worried what might happen if they traveled alone. It was not long before Sarah revealed the truth behind why she had asked her to take a walk. They sat on the side of hill over looking the distant forest and a field of tall grass.
“Kagome who is the man with long silvery whit hair that InuYasha constantly battles?” Sarah asked.
“You mean Sesshoumaru?” Kagome asked.
“Sesshoumaru.” Sarah said slowly as to pronounce his name correctly. “Is that his name? When I am in complete darkness he often consumes my mind.”
“Yes, that is InuYasha's older brother.” Kagome informed her. “He is a full blooded demon lord. He is very powerful. You were extremely lucky he didn't kill you when you attack him.”
“I attacked him?!” Sarah said shocked.
“Yes.” Kagome confirmed. “More than once.”
“But I think he spared your life because he has started to warm up to humans, so to speak. He has a travel companion who is a small girl and I think she has changed his mind on the hearts of men.” Kagome suggested.
“He is very handsome.” Sarah blurted out.
“You are love-struck with him aren't you?” Kagome's eyes grew large as she said those words.
Sarah replied by blushing.
“Even though he does not hate humans as he once did, you had better get that idea out of your head.” Kagome scolded her.
A frown came upon Sarah's face. “You're right. After all I have to go home…somehow.”
For a few moments silence fell between them only to be interrupted by Sarah's questions. “So what is the deal between the two of them anyway? InuYasha and Sesshoumaru I mean.” Sarah asked.
Kagome began explaining the battle between the two of them over the Tetsaiga. InuYasha realizing there was nothing to be alarmed about returned to Kaide's hut. He found everyone waiting for them to return. InuYasha reassured them there was nothing to be alarmed about.
As Kagome was explaining about the two brothers and their swords an idea popped in her head. It was like a slap in the face and she stopped talking and paused for a moment. “That's it!”
“Huh?” Sarah looked at her confused.
“The answer that we have been looking for to help you, I just realized something!” she said with excitement. She grabbed Sarah by the arm and the two went running back to Kaide's hut. Everyone was a bit startled at first.
“I've got it!” Kagome said. “The way we can help Sarah.”
“What is it?” Sango asked.
“Sesshoumaru's sword the Tensaiga!” she exclaimed.
Everyone gave her a confused look and of coarse InuYasha was the first to speak up. “And how will that help?” he asked.
“Sesshoumaru's sword is useless for doing harm unless his opponent is already dead right? Well Akuma must still be stuck between the worlds, other wise she could constantly control Sarah. So if we can get Sesshoumaru to use his sword to battle her maybe it could expel the demon from her body. And his sword will not harm Sarah because she is still living.” Kagome explained.
“Like Sesshoumaru would help.” InuYasha scoffed.
“InuYasha you said yourself that he acted strangely toward her when she transformed back to her original for did you not?” Miroku began to debate. “Maybe we can use that to our advantage.”
“How's that?” InuYasha questioned.
“InuYasha are you blind?” Kagome asked. “I was there the morning he was about to attack her. There was something different about him then. It's worth a try, it's the only chance we have right now.”
“Kagome is right.” Kiade said. “But there is nothing we can do tonight. We will have to deal with this in the morning.”
Everyone slept that night except Sarah she had enough sleep the days before. InuYasha stayed awake to outside the hut perched high in the tree. Sarah walked outside taking in the cool night air and looking over the village from atop the hill.
“Can't sleep?” InuYasha asked.
“I think I have slept enough.” She smiled.
Sarah was not they type to deal well with doubt. And she reluctantly asked InuYasha, “Do you think he will help?
“If he doesn't I'll take the Tensaiga from him and do it myself.” InuYasha reassured her. Soon after InuYasha bid Sarah good night and climbed up into another tall tree close to Kiade's hut.
Sarah stood alone worried about her condition. Her thoughts returned to earlier that evening when Kagome had been telling her about Sesshoumaru. He had hated humans, all humans until Rin. And just because he cared for one little human girl was not enough reassurance he would be willing to help her. InuYasha was a powerful half demon, but from what she had learned earlier he may not be able to take his brothers sword. More importantly something inside Sarah did not want him to have to take it.
Although Sarah had fought the need to sleep for fear of returning to that dark place, she went inside the hut sometime before dawn and fell fast asleep. She did not sleep long. She was awakened by the voices of Kagome and Sango as they prepared to leave.
“What's going on?” Sarah asked wiping the sleep from her eyes.
“Oh you're up.” Kagome replied. “We are just getting ready to go look for Sesshoumaru.”
Sango walked out of the hut to find the others and inform them that Sarah had finally woke up and they could leave soon.
“Do you really think he will help me?” Sarah asked looking for reassurance from her new found friend.
Kagome paused while packing her backpack. The truth was that she herself feared that he wouldn't and there would be a battle between the two brothers unlike any other before. Although the brothers had battled countless times there had never been so much on the line. She faked a smile and answered, “Sesshoumaru had changed a lot since I first met him. There is a good chance he will.” Her words even sounded doubtful to her.
Sarah managed a smile for a reply as she thought to herself, `She doesn't think he is going to help either.'
Everyone gathered and left the village heading in the last direction they had seen Sesshoumaru. Sarah's thoughts returned to the few moments she could recall of seeing him. She had been lost in those golden eyes. She did not share with the others that the few glimpses of him had been burned into her mind. They often kept her company when she was in darkness. She giggled inside as she thought to herself, `He's going be my white night.'
Kagome noticed a tiny smile cross Sarah's lips. “What are you thinking about?” she asked.
Sarah was quick to answer with a lie, “Just thinking about something back home.”
Kagome did not try to pry any further realizing that it wasn't true.
The group had been walking all day following InuYasha as he tracked his older brother with his nose. As they came closer InuYasha suggested he go ahead alone to try and “talk” to Sesshoumaru alone. There was no need to endanger everyone if he was in a fighting mood.
InuYasha slipped off from the others, but Sarah was not about to let an opportunity to see Sesshoumaru while she able to stay conscious. As the others settled down to rest she slipped off following InuYasha. Though his speed was much greater he did not have to travel far to find his older brother. Sarah soon reached them and hid herself behind a tree watching the events unfold before her.
“Sesshoumaru!” InuYasha barked as he was catching up to him.
Sesshoumaru paused and turned glaring back at his younger half brother. He said nothing as he turned around facing InuYasha and placing his hand on the hilt of his demon sword.
“I am not here to fight with you.” InuYasha growled countering his older brother and also laying his hand on the hilt of the Tetsaiga preparing for anything.
“What do you want InuYasha?” Sesshoumaru said annoyed by the very presence of InuYasha.
“Sesshoumaru I need the Tensaiga. Either you can do what I ask of you, or I can take it from you.” InuYasha growled.
“You think you have the power to use the Tensaiga?” Sesshoumaru laughed as he began walking towards his younger brother. “You can barely control the Tetsaiga.”
“Do you not want to get rid of Akuma?” InuYasha began to bargain with his brother.
“She is no threat to me.” Sesshoumaru replied. “Only an annoyance.”
“If that is so why did you not kill her when you had the chance?” InuYasha questioned him.
“How dare you question Sesshoumaru!” Sesshoumaru replied as anger began to burn through him.
The wind changed direction and Sarah's scent was carried to Sesshoumaru. He rose into the air drawing his demon sword. As he landed behind InuYasha he slashed the trees leaving only stumps with the slash of his sword. A terrified Sarah fell back landing on her back looking up at the great demon lord as he approached her holding Tokijin only inches from her face. Sarah looked up into his golden eyes and again she began to loose herself. In turn the same happened for Sesshoumaru. He stood over the frightened human girl and lowered his sword.
She was in fact the most beautiful creature he had ever seen before. The two of them were dragged back by Kagome's voice. “Sesshoumaru no! Don't!”
Kagome raced over to help Sarah up as InuYasha raced over to make sure he did not try to harm either of them. Kagome helped Sarah up off the ground. Sarah tried to keep her senses about her but she could not help to stare at him.
“Sesshoumaru please.” Kagome begged. “We need your help to defeat Akuma. If you don't help us then Sarah will die.”
Sesshoumaru glanced from Sarah to Kagome. “As if one human life would mean anything to me.” He replied. Tears began to flood Sarah's eyes. She fought to hold them back as her fear seemed to be realized.
“In that case,” InuYasha said as he drew out his sword. “I will take if from you!”
Kagome pulled Sarah by the arm back away from them. Sesshoumaru grinned evilly at his younger brother. “I will kill you InuYasha and take the Tetsaiga from your dead body!” His eyes began to glow red with anger.
The brothers darted through the air exchanging blows. Meanwhile the sun had begun to set in the western sky. Sarah began to feel the familiar pain as her skin began to burn from the transformation. “Kagome!” she shouted. “Get away from me now!”
Kagome looked confused at her and then saw the deep blue glow of Sarah's eyes. She stepped back and fell over a tree limb that had been severed moments before when Sesshoumaru had attacked. Kagome watched in fear as Akuma began to take over.
“InuYasha!” Kagome squealed. InuYasha turned his attention to the two girls only to see Akuma barely missing Kagome with a shot of fire from her fingertips.
“Kagome!” he yelled as he rushed over to her side.
“You are proving to be a nuisance!” Akuma said. “I will rid myself of you now!” She narrowed her eyes at the half demon and again sent flames through the air from her fingertips.
Sesshoumaru stood in the background taking it all in. `InuYasha is mine!' he thought to himself. He sent an attack toward the demon with Tokijin. She leapt into the air dodging his attack.
“Ah I see you are determined to die by my hand.” Akuma said as she landed only a few feet from him.
“Use the Tensaiga!” Kagome yelled at Sesshoumaru. “It's the only way to defeat her, otherwise you'll just kill Sarah and she'll be able to possess someone else!”
Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes at Kagome, Angered that she dare to order him.
“Listen to her Sesshoumaru! It's the only way!” InuYasha pleaded.
Sesshoumaru paid them no attention and kept attacking Akuma using Tokijin.
She dodged his blows and countered his attacks using her fire. But Sesshoumaru was fast enough to dodge her attacks as well. She swooped in close to him and knocked him back punching him. She then kicked Tokijin from his hand. The sword flew through the air far from his reach. Sesshoumaru fell back, and he was furious as he rose from the ground. Akuma charged him once again at full speed only to be met by his whip of light across her chest. Stunned she stopped in her tracks and laughed. Blood poured from her wound, but it was the humans blood not hers. Sesshoumaru noticed this and as he flew towards her so fast he was a blur to the human eye, drew out the Tensaiga. He sliced at the demon from her right hip to her left shoulder.
Akuma began to laugh not realizing she was being dispelled from the human body. Sesshoumaru stood and watched as she was pushed from the human body and dissolved into the air and blew away like dust in the wind. Sesshoumaru returned his sword to its sheath and picked Tokijin up returning it to his side.
Kagome and InuYasha rushed over to Sarah. The wound in her chest was healed and she slowly opened her eyes. Sesshoumaru stood and watched to see if InuYasha was going to continue battling with him. But InuYasha paid him no attention as he checked her over making sure she was alright. He then took his place beside Kagome as they watched Sesshoumaru turn and leave. Sarah realized Sesshoumaru had helped her she called out his name. Sesshoumaru felt a warm chill spread through his body at the sound of her speaking his name. He stopped dead in his tracks but did not turn around. He closed his eyes for a moment taking in this pleasure in his body he had never felt before. Sarah ran towards him and came around to face him.
“I..I..” Sarah stuttered. “I just wanted to thank you.” She managed.
Sesshoumaru wanted to be his usual cold self and reply that he did it for other reasons but something in him would not allow him. He could only look down at her soft face. His eyes connected with her and soon scanned down to her soft pink lips. Sesshoumaru found animal urges taking over his mind. He longed to kiss those lips only feet away from his own. Sarah wanted to caress his face, her hands longed to trace those inherited markings on his face. Fighting it Sesshoumaru stepped around her without saying a word and walked away from her. But out of the corner of his eye he glanced back at her one last time before continuing out of sight.
“What was that all about?” InuYasha looked confused at Kagome.
“Something you just wouldn't understand.” She replied.
After a moment standing where she had spoken to him Sarah felt like a complete dolt. She shook her head and returned to Kagome and InuYasha. The three of them returned to the village and welcomed by a patiently waiting Kiade. Inside the hut Kagome explained what happened while InuYasha teased Shippo with a bag of chips Kagome had given him earlier. Sarah sat silent fading in and out listening to Kagome's story. Her mind kept returning to Sesshoumaru, his golden eyes and his soft featured face. If she closed her eyes she could picture it as if he were there standing in front of her again.
“The sword Sesshoumaru carries, the Tensaiga, is just as powerful as the Tetsaiga.” Kiade began. “However it can only be used to heal the dying and send the already dead to where they belong.”
A silence fell over all of them after Kiade explained the obvious. It was several minutes before it was broken by Sarah's voice. “So what do we do now?”
“I guess the next thing would be to find a way for you to go home.” Kiade replied.
`I'm not so sure I want to go home.' Sarah said to herself.
“How are we going to do that?” Sango spoke up.
An uncomfortable silence fell among them. No one had any idea how this was going to happen. After all, the demon which had used a spell to open a doorway had long been dead. And old Kiade herself did not know any such spells.
“Maybe I can find something at home, back at the shrine.” Kagome offered.
“That is a good idea.” Miroku encouraged her. “There is a lot more documented information in your time. Maybe you could find something we don't know about yet.”
“Then it's settled.” Kagome said determined. “In the morning I shall return home and see what my grandfather has in the shrine. Besides I need to catch up on some of my school work. It's been a while and I am a senior this year.”
