Chapter Nine:
Inuyasha allowed his back to slump even farther down the rough bark of his tree branch bed. He was seriously annoyed, but chose not to voice his frustration to the others. They'd never let him live it down.
He could imagine their reactions so clearly that any desire to leave his lookout was quickly smothered out in his mind. Shippou would never stop teasing him, calling him names like `lovesick', and `crybaby'.
Sango would deceive him by asking innocent questions that have nothing to do with Kagome and somehow twist their meaning at the last second, making him feel exactly like whatever insults Shippou would come up with beforehand. And then she'd probably try to convince him to go through the well to get Kagome and make up with her.
`Either that, or chase me around with hiraikotsu and demand it,' he thought with a shudder. Nodding his head in approval of these two possible outcomes, his mind drifted to the response he would get from Miroku.
The hentai Houshi would most likely pat him on the shoulder and say things with perverted hidden meanings that didn't make any sense to his sheltered mind. Or call him names that he didn't understand. The hanyou sighed.
`Stupid monk.'
Inuyasha crossed his arms over his chest with an irritated scowl. He then vowed silently to himself that he would not act at all depressed when he was around those three idiots. He had no other choice but to put up a false front. His pride was on the line. And yet…
The last time he checked, none of his friends had secret mind-reading powers, so…
`In the refuge of my mind, Kagome, I can miss you freely…'
ooooooooo
Sango hurriedly glanced from left to right, checking to make sure that no one had followed her to this place, before springing into the shelter of the forest; Kirara jumping in right after. Smiling in gleeful anticipation, she ran through the trees to the location of her goal: the hot springs.
On the night before yesterday, before Kagome's fateful meeting with Kouga, they had spotted them while collecting firewood, and secretly planned to come later on. But…
`Kagome is busy right now, so I'll just have to enjoy them for her,' she thought, smiling softly to herself.
She readied her hands to undo her clothing, yet her eyes still nervously scanned her surroundings for any peeping toms. In particular, a certain peeping Houshi.
`If that hentai shows his face around here, I'll be sure to beat him for hours.'
After a few moments of seeing and hearing absolutely nothing, however, she began to undress. When she finished, she quietly stepped into the hot spring and allowed herself to sink in up to her neck. Turning relaxed brown eyes to Kirara, she whispered:
“If you see anyone, let me know.” To which Kirara mewed an affirmative.
A few minutes easily passed by, which Sango spent in silence and…boredom.
`It's no fun in a hot spring without someone else to talk to,' she thought with a sigh. `I miss you, Kagome.'
The moment the thought came to her, though, she dismissed it. Kagome would be back, and there would be plenty of other times that they could talk in a hot spring. Someone else needed Kagome right now.
Sango's brow wrinkled slightly when she thought of exactly who it was that needed her short-skirted friend from the future at that moment.
Inuyasha had really gone too far when he had said what he did to Kouga. It had not been his place to say such things. Only Kagome could have said them, yet Sango knew it in her heart that Kagome never would have if Inuyasha hadn't. And now, Kouga was hurting because of him.
A strange thought slipped into her mind then.
It was true that Kouga had been upset when he had first heard the news, yet, after Kagome had gone after him and brought him back to the campfire last night…
`He was back to his old self again.'
Sango touched her finger to her lips as her thoughts continued to jumble into
confusion.
What had transpired between Kagome and their wolf friend when they met last night? What could have caused his broken heart to mend so very quickly?
Sango tilted her head to the side in deep thought when she realized yet another change that had transpired between her miko friend and the ookami on that night; Kagome no longer referred to him as `Kouga-kun.'
“Kagome, what is going on?” She inquired of her friend, who was currently five hundred years away, and asking herself the very same question.
ooooooooo
Miroku calmly ambled down the dirt path that led away from their campsite, shakujou gently touching the ground in a steady rhythm beside his sandals.
Inuyasha's sighing had finally annoyed him enough to force himself away from his comfortable seat by the fire. Of course, he had asked his hanyou friend to abandon his melancholy mood and `go after them, already', but…
“Who's melan-whatever around here, huh, Miroku? If Kagome wants to be with that mangy wolf, then that's fine by me!” Inuyasha huffed, poking his chin in the air in his irritation.
“You are, that's who!” Shippou shouted, scrambling up the tree and smacking the white-haired hanyou on the head.
“Shippou, you dirty little-!”
The little kitsune squeaked in fright and hopped off Inuyasha's perch in a hurry, but the hanyou was too fast for him. He grabbed him by his tail and sent him flying through the trees.
“AAAHHHhhhhh…” A poofing sound was heard about twenty feet away, and Sango and Miroku watched in amusement as a pink balloon with large white eyes slowly drifted to the forest floor.
And that's where he had stayed. Miroku guessed that Shippou was currently sulking at the base of the well, hoping that Kagome might come back a bit early.
It hadn't been long after that when Sango announced that she and Kirara were going for a walk. Yet, she had exited the camp with a small towel sticking out of the green sash that was tied around her waist.
Going for a walk with a towel? Miroku shook his head in mock sadness.
“My dear taijiya, you need not hide your wish for a bath.”
Yet he knew exactly why she had done so. She had figured that he would immediately follow her, or make up some excuse to go somewhere close by her bathing area, just to take a glimpse of her.
“You were wrong when you thought such things of me,” Miroku whispered aloud, bowing his head with a hurt sigh.
“I waited an entire agonizing half an hour before coming to find you.”
ooooooooo
Shippou sighed and rested his cheek on the wooden base of the well, staring down into its terrible empty darkness. Though, the eerie darkness was not what unnerved the fox kit. It was terrible because it was empty.
“Kagome, please come back soon.” He pleaded into the darkness.
Shippou would never believe how lonely he felt when Kagome was not around. He had gotten so used to her loving ways during their travels together, that he couldn't imagine what his life would be like if he lost her forever.
A small tear formed in his eye at just the thought of it.
“Stupid Inuyasha. Why does he have to be so stubborn?”
It was clear to the three of them, (meaning Sango, Miroku and himself) that Inuyasha missed Kagome too, and was completely depressed without her. Yet, his pride would not allow him to humble himself and go to her in her own time.
“Baka,” he muttered unhappily, while pounding his fist on the base of the well. “Some people never change.”
Shippou turned around suddenly when he heard Kirara growl somewhere off in the distance. It wasn't long after that when Sango's shouting voice was heard, followed by a painful slapping sound.
“HENTAI!!”
The kitsune narrowed his eyes, lips curving into a knowing smirk.
`Like I said before,' he thought. `Some people never change.'
A/N: Thus the latest filler chapter, featuring Inuyasha, Sango, Kirara, Miroku and Shippou, has come to a close.
Sorry about the length, the chapters with those who were left behind tend to be shorter than the Kouga/Kagome-centered ones.
Though, who can blame me?
Thanks for reading, and don't forget to review!
Until next time.
