A/N: Geez, how long has it BEEN? I sincerely apologize for such a long wait! Well, without further ado, here's the tenth episode in this thrilling…yeah.

Chapter Ten:

“All right, it says here that Dr. Kimaro says…you're going to be fine?” The receptionist, Kin, exclaimed in surprise, glancing up from the doctor's notes regarding Kouga's health and gaping at each of them in turn. “But how is that possible?” She asked, shaking her head in disbelief.

Kouga shrugged under her questioning glare and looked to Kagome for help.

“Well, Kouga has…uh…really strong blood in him, along with…um…”

“An incredibly strong will to live.” Kouga said with a small smile as he glanced warmly at the young woman at his side.

“Yes…” Kagome caught his stare and blushed when she deciphered the hidden meaning behind his words. She was his will to survive.

Notaishita Higurashi cleared her throat. The receptionist blinked as she was brought out of her reverie of incredulity.

“The doctor also says that you're to take it easy over the next few days, is that understood?” Kin demanded, glaring at Kouga.

“Yes, ma'am.” Kouga affirmed with a short nod of his head.

Ruffling through a few papers at her desk, she pulled one out of a large stack and handed it to Mrs. Higurashi along with a pen.

“Sign here, please,” she muttered.

Notaishita nodded and did as she was told. When she was finished, she passed them back to Kin.

“Is that all?” she asked.

Kin raised an eyebrow, silently wondering what these people were expecting when they came to the hospital. “Yes, that's it. You're free to go now.”

“Thank you for everything,” Mrs. Higurashi said with a short bow.

Kin ignored her and busied herself with the paperwork behind her desk.

Notaishita glanced from Kouga to Kagome and asked, “Shall we go, then?”

Kagome nodded cheerfully. This trip to the hospital had turned out much better than she had ever hoped for, and she was quite relieved.

Looking happily at Kouga, she extended her hand to him, smiling when he gently took it with his.

“Let's go.”

oooooooo

The car-ride home had passed without event. It seemed to Kagome that her mother's driving had notably become more steady and predictable. The Higurashi's little blue car was able to make it home in one piece, without any threat to its exterior. There was no noisy traffic to add to Kagome's migraine, the pain of which was rapidly decreasing in strength.

The backseat was quiet, too. Kouga was content staring out the window at the many cars they continually passed on their way home. The fact that Kagome was still holding his hand also helped to calm his nerves a great deal. He sighed in content, allowing himself to smile as he recalled their moments alone in the hospital.

She had almost allowed him to kiss her. In fact, even though they had been interrupted (which seemed to be happening to him quite a lot recently), it was not Kagome who had stopped the kiss. She had even hinted at wishing to continue later on! Kouga was tempted to silently thank that scorpion for poisoning him and giving him the opportunity to grow closer to Kagome; but he didn't because that would be like thanking Naraku himself, something Kouga could never allow himself to do.

His eyes narrowed as he continued to think about the repulsive hanyou responsible for the deaths of so many of his men.

`I swear, Naraku, as soon as I get back, I'll track you down; and when I find you, I'll rip your pathetic heart out of that disgusting body of yours, but not before I hear you begging me for mercy as you bow low at my feet, promising me so many thin-`

“Kouga?”

Slowly, the sounds of the car traveling up the driveway, and the hum of the engine returned to his sensitive ears. He let go of the breath he hadn't realized he was holding and turned his head to look at the one who had called his name.

Kagome was frowning in concern, grasping his hand in both of hers. “You were shaking. Are you all right?” She asked, her worry for him was evident in her voice.

Kouga shook his head. “I'm all right, Kagome.” When her stare didn't lessen, he sighed. “I was just thinking.”

The Higurashi shrine appeared around the corner, and the car slowed to a stop. Mrs. Higurashi shut off the engine and, keys in hand, vacated the car. Kagome waited until she disappeared into the house before turning back to Kouga.

“About…?”

Kouga shrugged one shoulder.

Kagome's shoulders sagged.

She unclipped his seatbelt and then hers, and pulled the handle of the door to open it.

“I was shaking?” Kouga asked softly, his eyes downcast to the carpeted floor.

Kagome released the metal handle of the door and sat back down, resting her back against the seat.

“Yes.”

Kouga picked at the edge of the fur around his wrist. “I see.”

Kagome was scanning him with concerned brown eyes, watching for any sign that would reveal his thoughts to her. When none were presented to her, she decided to guess.

“Naraku?”

His fists clenched on his lap.

Bull's-eye.

Kagome sighed, trying to come up with something comforting to say to him.

Kouga shook his head suddenly, and smiled. “Sorry, Kagome. Now isn't the time to be thinking about him. Not if doing so means making you upset.”

Kagome just looked at him, confused. “I'm upset because I'm worried about you.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

“Yes.” She said softly, leaning forward a bit. Her eyes were focused intently on his.

“Kagome…” he whispered, bringing his hand up to gently cup her cheek. His touch made her gasp shakily. Her other hand found his on his lap and she gently squeezed it, encouraging him to lean closer.

“Kouga…”

Unable to wait any longer, Kouga brought his lips closer until-

WHAM!

A soccer ball bounced off the left window of the back seat and rolled back to its owner a few feet away.

Souta scooped it up and walked over to Kagome's side of the car.

“Gomen, nee-chan, I didn't mean to hit the car so please don't tell Mom!”

Kouga sighed, exasperated. Why were they always getting interrupted? He shook his head and mouthed, `why?' to the seat in front of him.

Kagome giggled. “Don't worry, I promise we'll pick up where we left off later.”

Kouga grinned deviously. “It's later now.”

Kagome shoved him playfully. “Later, later. As in `when there can be no possible interruptions' later.” She said, nodding her head back at Souta, who was still staring in the window at them.

Kouga stared past her shoulder at the little devil that had interrupted them.

`Why you little…'

Kagome took his hand again, jolting him out of his thoughts of strangling the youngest Higurashi.

“Come on, let's go inside.” She said, tugging on his arm until he allowed her to drag him out of the car through her door. She led him to the front door of the house again, all the while he was glaring daggers over his shoulder at Souta, who was following Kagome close behind. When the door was opened, Souta shoved past Kouga and ran ahead inside, spinning in a circle to dodge Grandpa, who was just walking around the corner.

“So, how did it go?” He asked, motioning for them to come sit in the living room with him. Kagome dragged Kouga down on the blob of `goosh' with her, while Grandpa chose a chair opposite the sofa.

“Surprisingly well,” Kagome said.

Grandpa nodded. “You didn't give them any trouble, did you, boy?”

Kouga raised an eyebrow. Did this old man really wish to start a fight with him?

“Grandpa…” Kagome warned.

Grandpa Higurashi shrugged his shoulders and looked innocent.

“Kagome, dear, will you be needing a lunch tomorrow?” Mrs. Higurashi called from the kitchen.

“What? I'm not sure I'm going to school tomorrow.” She said aloud to no one in particular, not loud enough that her mother could hear.

“Tomorrow's Sunday.” Grandpa said.

“Oh, right.” Kagome nodded in relief. “Tomorrow's Sunday, Mom!” she called back into the kitchen.

“Oh, it is, isn't it?” She muttered, walking into the living room and sitting in the chair beside Grandpa. “Will you be going to school on Monday, then?”

“I don't think so, Mom. Remember, the doctor told Kouga to get plenty of rest.”

“Yes, but Grandpa will be here to look after him, won't you, Dad?”

Grandpa shook his head. “Sorry, Notaishita, I thought I told you: I'm going golfing with the boys all week.”

“Oh, that's right, you did say that.” She muttered, raising her finger to her lips. “And I have to work all week. Souta's in school…” Suddenly, she gasped and looked from Kouga to Kagome and back again.

“Kagome, what if you were to bring him to school with you?”

“WHAT?!” Kouga and Kagome both shouted in unison.

“I couldn't do that! He's youkai, someone's bound to notice something different about him.”

Kouga nodded in agreement.

“Well then, what else are we supposed to do? He can't stay here by himself, the poor dear would be so confused.”

Kouga rested his chin on his hand.

`Why is everyone picking on me today?' He asked himself.

“But…”

“I don't see what the problem is. You two appear to be the same age. Tomorrow is Sunday, we could take him to the mall to buy him some new clothes to wear to school on Monday. It'll be so much fun dressing him up!”

Kouga's eyes widened. He didn't like where this was going at all.

“What do you say, Kagome?”

Was Kagome the only one who had a say in this?

“Well, I guess it would be interesting.”

“Interesting, indeed.” Grandpa muttered.

“The doctor did say to take it easy for a while, so I'm not about to allow you to go back down the well, Kouga. I don't think we have a choice in this.” Kagome turned sympathetic brown eyes to his blue ones. “What do you say?” She asked, smiling innocently at him.

Kouga gulped. He wasn't so sure that this was a good idea, but…

As if he could say no to Kagome.

“School, huh?” He asked, looking her in the eyes, his defeat now apparent to her.

“But what will we do about my tail?”

A/N: It's short, but hey, it's an update, right? …Right?
