Chapter Twelve:
“Kouga, NO!” Kagome shouted rushing forward and grabbing his hand, yanking him back away from the busy intersection. A large green truck, honking its horn loudly, sped by the spot on the road where Kouga had just been standing. Kagome bent over and rested her hands on her thighs, breathing a sigh of relief. Kouga whirled around to face her, looking bewildered.
“How do you know when it's okay to cross, Kagome?” He asked, ducking a little to see her face.
“You have to wait until the light turns green,” she said, looking up at him. “Never ever walk across when there's a red light, okay? That just took ten years off my life!”
Kouga smiled apologetically. “Gomen, Kagome,” he said. Then, with a sly smile, he took her hand, linking her fingers with his. “Maybe you'd feel better if you held my hand.”
“H-hai, that would make me feel better,” she admitted shyly, her cheeks coated with a blush.
They walked the rest of the way to the school in silence. As they were walking through the gate that was the school's entrance, Kagome gasped and glanced worriedly up at Kouga.
“Oh, my gosh! What am I going to tell everyone? I can't tell them you're my cousin since you obviously can't control yourself,” she muttered, glancing down at their hands.
Kouga wasn't listening. “How many people go to this school, anyway?” He asked, looking around at the schoolyard full of teenagers.
“Oh, a lot of people,” she said, distracted, glancing nervously around at her fellow classmates. They were staring at Kouga with great interest. “How does this sound: `Ohayou, Minna-san, this is Yourouzoku Kouga, an old friend of my family's.'”
“That sounds good to me, Kagome.”
“Oh, and whatever you do, don't call yourself a wolf.”
“Right.”
“And, please, always make sure your tail is hidden, okay? If anyone saw that…Gosh, you'd be on the news everywhere…” Kagome mumbled, touching her cheek and coloring slightly.
“News?” Kouga asked, this new concept capturing his attention at once.
“Uh…yeah, it wouldn't be good.”
Kagome blushed fiercely when a freshman boy glanced from her to Kouga and then at their locked hands. Kagome dropped his hand at once. `If they think he's my boyfriend, sensei won't let us sit together.' She thought. That would not be good. If Kouga got loose…
“Oh gosh…this is going to be harder than I thought!” She muttered to herself.
“Don't worry, Kagome,” Kouga said, patting her on the back. “I'll be fine. And you will too.”
Kagome sighed. “I hope you're right.”
They had reached homeroom, which for Kagome, also happened to be first period. Kagome took a deep breath. “Are you ready, Kouga?” she whispered.
Kouga nodded and winked. Kagome opened the door just as the bell rang.
“Ohayou, Higurashi-san. Cutting it pretty close this morning, aren't you?” asked Takamori-sensei. Kouga walked in behind Kagome to see who was talking to her. A young woman with glasses was sitting on a large desk at the front of the room. Then, looking toward the back of the room, he noticed with a start that there were twenty other teenagers seated and staring at him.
“Gomen nasai, sensei,” Kagome muttered with a bow. “It won't happen again.”
Takamori-sensei nodded and smiled. “Make sure that it doesn't. And who is this?” She asked, turning her attention to Kouga for the first time.
“Oh, um, sensei, minna-san,” she began, glancing at the students seated in the classroom. “This is Yourouzoku Kouga. He's an old friend of my family and he'll be staying with me for a few days. He said he wanted to join me at school, so I hope that's not a problem?”
Kouga raised an eyebrow at the class, daring them to argue with Kagome.
“Oh, no that's not a problem at all, Higurashi.” Takamori-sensei stood and walked them over to the front of the class. “Well, why don't you introduce yourself to us, Yourouzoku-san?”
“Ano…Ohayou. Yourouzoku Kouga desu. Like Kagome said, I'm an old friend of the Higurashi family.”
Sensei nodded. “And? Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What are your interests? Goals?”
Kouga glanced at Kagome out of the corner of his eye and smirked wickedly. Kagome's cheeks turned brick red. He wouldn't… “Of course, sensei. My interests-“
“Wolves!” Kagome shouted. “Um…Kouga loves wolves, don't you, Kouga?” There was a certain threat behind her forced smile, and Kouga knew that if he didn't play along he would certainly regret it later on.
“Oh, yes, of course. Wolves are my favorite animals.”
“Are they now? Tell me, what makes you like them so much, Yourouzoku-san?”
“Why, there are many reasons, sensei. For example, take their authority over dogs. Wolves are much smarter than dogs, stronger, too-“
“Much more attractive, and muscular. And so much sweeter.” Kagome added with a tender look in her eyes before she could stop herself. Then, realizing what she'd said, she turned brick red and slapped her hand over her mouth, refusing to look at him.
“O…kay, you can take your seats now, you tw- Yourouzoku-san, are you all right?”
Kagome jerked her head up.
Something was definitely wrong with Kouga. His arms were shaking, clenched, by his sides, his eyes were shut tight, and he was breathing hard. `Not the poison again…!'
“Kouga?” She asked, her voice trembling in worry. Kagome ran to his side and touched his arm gently. His next action scared her more.
Crying out as if he'd been burned, he yanked his arm away from her with such force that he swayed on his feet and had to grab the sensei's desk for support. Hurt, Kagome blinked tears out of her eyes, willing herself not to cry in front of her class.
“Should I call the nurse, Yourouzoku-san?” asked Takamori-sensei, looking worried.
“No…no…I'll be all right,” he muttered after a few moments' hesitation.
“Are you sure…?”
But Kouga was already getting up. Clearing his throat, he said, “Sorry about that, sensei. I'm afraid I suffer from dizzy spells now and again.”
“Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Are you sure you're all right?”
“Yes, I'm fine.” He said with a small smile.
Kagome was not convinced. She tried her best to keep her voice from shaking as she said, “S-sensei, maybe I should take him to the water fountain or someth-“
“That won't be necessary, Kagome. I can assure you that I am quite well.” Kagome frowned. He was talking to the wall, not her. Why was he refusing to look at her?
“Very good. You two can take the two seats in the back. Now class, as you may recall, yesterday's lesson was cut short by the fire alarm, so today's class will have to be rushed a bit…”
Kagome did not listen to one word of the lesson for the full ninety minutes of class. She did her best to get Kouga's attention by dropping her pencil over and over again, and glaring at him out of the corner of her eye, but to no avail. He absolutely refused to look at her. Tears pricked at her eyes continuously, but she refused to let them fall.
When the bell finally rang, Kagome jumped from her seat and grabbed Kouga by the hand. “We need to talk.” She mumbled, coldly. Leading him into a secluded hallway, she dropped his hand and glared up at him. Finally, he allowed his eyes to meet hers.
“Wh-what…?” Kagome started to ask, but broke off as he crushed her to him in a forceful hug.
“Oh, Kagome, I'm so sorry.” He whispered, pressing his lips to the top of her head.
“Kouga, what happened to you?” she asked, clutching at his black t-shirt.
Kouga sighed. “Do you really want to know?” He asked, squeezing her shoulders.
“Yes, of course I do.” She said, lifting her head and gazing into his eyes.
Kouga nodded solemnly and closed his eyes with a sigh.
“Well… I was already flustered about coming up with something to say to the class, so…when you…said those things,” he broke off to smirk at Kagome's fierce blush. “I…my instincts went crazy, I guess. It took all of my willpower not to jump on you right then, in front of every one of your classmates.”
Kagome gasped and buried her face in his chest, the tips of her ears turning bright red. “So then, of course you understand why I couldn't allow you to touch me at that moment.” When she thought of his cry earlier when she had touched his arm, something tickled below her stomach. “And I wasn't sure what would happen if I looked at you, so…I'm sorry for being so rude.”
Kagome shook her head against his chest. “No. I'm sorry, Kouga. I should have trusted you.”
Kouga smiled warmly. “Don't you see, Kagome? You're already proving that you trust me right now by allowing me to touch you.”
Kagome's arms wrapped around his waist and hugged him tightly to her…
A ringing sound caused her to jump away from him. “Oh, my gosh, we have to go! Our next class is going to start soon! Oh no, we'll never make it!”
“Where is it, Kagome?”
“The other side of the school.”
Kouga nodded, scooping her into his arms. “You give me directions and I'll run.”
“But-“ Ignoring Kagome's protests, he took off at full speed. “Kouga! There's no running in the halls! And what about the-“
“Don't worry, Kagome, I'm going fast enough that they can't see us,” he said. “And slow enough so that there's no tornado.”
“Left! Right! Watch out for the hall monitor! STOP!”
Kouga skidded to a stop five feet away from the door to their next class. Setting her down, he allowed her to lead him into the classroom. After a quick introduction to the class, (thankfully, this sensei didn't ask Kouga about his interests or goals) Kouga was seated beside Kagome and the class began.
oooooo
Kouga carried the lunch tray for both of them over to the table Kagome identified as her friends' table. Sitting down across from Yuka, Eri, and Ayumi, Kagome patted the seat next to her; Kouga climbed in beside her. He watched in fascination as she poked a straw through a juice box and handed it to him before doing the same for herself.
“Oh my gosh, Kagome-chan, who is this hottie?” Eri asked, bold as ever. Of course she had waited until after Kagome had started to sip from the straw before asking such a question…
“E-E-E-Eri!” Kagome spluttered, spilling juice all over her front. Picking up a napkin and dabbing the wet spot on her shirt, she glanced over at Kouga, who had turned a bright red color and was closing his eyes.
“You can't argue with the facts, Kagome-chan,” Yuka started, propping her chin up on her hands and leaning forward to get a better look at him. “This guy is sexy major.”
“And j-just who said I was arguing?” Kagome asked quietly, blushing furiously.
Kouga's eyes widened. His blush was so severe that his whole body felt hot.
Ayumi squealed in delight. “Kagome-chan, is he your boyfriend?” She asked.
“Obviously not,” said a cold voice from behind them. The entire cafeteria froze. Kagome whirled around to find three girls glaring at her. The girl in the middle spoke again. “Why would he choose a nobody like her when he could have me?” She asked. Hips swaying a bit too much to be natural, she strolled over to the table and, to Kagome's horror, sat down in his lap.
“I'm Gikunshi Aimi, but you can call me whatever you want, handsome,” she said, pushing bleach-blonde hair over her shoulder and lightly tracing her finger over his chest.
Kagome was trembling from head to foot in her fury. “Get. Off. Him. Right. Now.”
Aimi laughed coldly. “Oh, like him do you, Higurashi?” she asked. Kagome turned bright red. “Well, let's see how he likes this, loser.” Kagome froze as she crushed her lips against his.
Kouga scowled and broke the kiss, standing from the table and shoving her off his lap. “How dare you say those things to Kagome?” He demanded.
Aimi smirked and raised an eyebrow. “Wait a second. You're defending her? Don't tell me…do you actually like her?”
“No,” Kouga said, shaking his head. Aimi grinned evilly at the hurt look on Kagome's face. “I love her.”
Catcalls and whistles sounded from the cafeteria as Kouga turned his back on her and sat back down beside Kagome.
“Good show,” said Eri, clapping to show her appreciation. Kagome linked her arm with his, found his hand and squeezed it. Scooting closer to him, she rested her head on his shoulder.
“So, what's your name?” Yuka asked him. “Besides `Kagome's boyfriend'?”
A/N: Okay, okay, it was short. I know. But, hey, it's an update! AND they went to school!
Sigh
Don't worry, there'll be another school chapter. . .
