Hey, everyone! I just want to say…Thanks so much for all of your reviews! You've made me one happy author! ^_^
Chapter 13:
“So, what's your name?” Yuka asked him. “Besides `Kagome's boyfriend', that is?”
“Yourouzoku Kouga desu,” He said, a contented smile playing on his lips as Kagome gave his hand a little squeeze.
“Yourouzoku-san, hmm?” Eri asked, tapping her chin with her forefinger thoughtfully. “Name's new to me, but I like it,” she shrugged.
Kouga smirked. “Kouga. Call me Kouga.”
“All right, Kouga-kun,” Yuka said, leaning toward him from across the table. Kagome smiled to herself when she heard that name fall from her best friend's lips. `Kouga-kun' was how she had addressed him before…before she truly got to know him, she supposed. When had she stopped adding the honorific to his name whenever she said it?
`Well, it doesn't matter now,' she thought. `I have a feeling I'll never call him anything else.'
“Where did you come from all of a sudden?” Yuka's question made her jump out of her thoughts and put up her guard once again. A sly grin crossed Yuka's face. “Or have you two been dating in secret?”
Kouga blinked in his confusion. Boyfriend? Dating? He could only guess what these futuristic terms could mean; he didn't dare ask Kagome in front of her friends, in fear of blowing their important secret.
Kagome came to his rescue. Sitting up and smiling warily across the table at each of her friends, she said, “I met Kouga two years ago, after he kidn-“ Kagome broke off, eyes widening, when Kouga elbowed her roughly in the side. She slapped her palms to her cheeks and turned pale in color.
`No!' she thought. `Kidnapped me?! What the heck am I saying?!'
Ayumi frowned. “Kidnapped?” She asked, glaring at Kouga with disgust. Yuka and Eri were doing the same, silently demanding that Kouga explain himself.
Kouga gulped. Chuckling nervously, he said, “Kidnapped her heart, of course, from that stupid two-timing baka Inu-koro-er-Inuyasha.”
“Inuyasha?” Ayumi asked.
“Two-timing?!” Yuka and Eri demanded at the same time.
Kouga slapped his hand to his forehead, moaning at his own stupidity. Sure, he had managed to save Kagome from her slip-up, but now he had gotten her into even more trouble with her friends.
“Then, this isn't the infamous two-timer you were talking about before, Kagome?” Eri asked, jabbing her thumb toward Kouga.
Kagome sighed. “No. As far as I'm concerned, Inuyasha and I are through.”
Kouga's jubilant little cry of “Yes!” was drowned out significantly by Kagome's friends' voices.
“Great job, Kagome!”
“Oh, I'm so glad…”
“Good for you, Kagome-chan!”
Kagome frowned, ignoring her friends and looking down at her hands, which were clenched in her lap. Why had she said that out loud? Since when had she decided this? Sometime after Kouga had been poisoned, she guessed. Kagome glanced sideways at Kouga out of the corner of her eye.
He was smiling softly to himself, the corners of his cheeks touched with red, with a far-off look in his eyes; no doubt he was thinking about what she had just admitted, same as she.
Her heart gave a little throb at the mere sight of him. Yes, this was why she had said that she had lost interest in Inuyasha; every day that she spent with the wolf-youkai, away from the overly zealous hanyou, she found that she liked him even more.
The fondness that she was beginning to feel for Kouga was now surpassing any feelings she ever had, or thought she had had for Inuyasha. She knew, without any uncertainty, that she was falling in love with him. Even as these thoughts occurred to her, however, concern for Inuyasha's feelings flooded her senses; the guilt of the inevitable hurt she would definitely inflict upon him by telling him their relationship was over consumed her, stealing the breath from her lips and making her feel like she was stooping to Naraku's level in cruelty.
`But…why not?' she asked herself. Why couldn't she want to be with Kouga? Inuyasha obviously thought it was acceptable to two-time her with Kikyou, so why should she feel guilty for liking Kouga?
No. This was right. Kouga truly loved her. She knew it for a fact, yet was constantly and graciously reminded of it by the softness in his eyes whenever he looked at her, and by the gentleness in his voice, that he used only for her, whenever he talked to her.
She and Kouga were meant to be together.
Ayumi's horrified gasp tore her from her thoughts.
“Kagome-chan…Kouga couldn't possibly be that hentai you talked about before, could he?” she asked, slapping both hands to her cheeks and looking at Kouga with a sudden terror in her eyes.
Kagome frowned. “Hentai?”
Yuka and Eri gasped as well, catching on.
“Yeah, you know, Kagome,” Eri prompted.
“The one who always asked you to bear his child?” Yuka said, wrinkling her nose in revulsion.
Kagome laughed, shaking her head. “No, no! That's Miroku-sama, not Kouga!”
Kouga frowned and slapped his fist on the table, making the four girls seated around him jump. “The H-Houshi?” He growled. “Oh, when we get back, he's going to regret this; I'll make sure of that.”
“Houshi?!” Ayumi shouted in disbelief.
“What's a Buddhist monk doing hitting on you like that?” Yuka asked, frowning and crossing her arms.
“Honestly, Kagome…” Eri began. “Where do you meet all these people?”
Kagome gulped. `Gomen nasai, Miroku-sama…' she thought, closing her eyes.
“Then…” Ayumi smiled, a dreamy look filling her eyes. “Could this be the one who declared his love for you in front of a lot of people, Kagome?”
Yuka and Eri looked at Kouga in awe.
Kagome grinned, nudging Kouga playfully. “Yup, he's the one, all right. In front of my friends and his-uh-friends, too.”
“Oh, my gosh, and he just did it again!” Eri squealed.
Kouga tapped his chin thoughtfully. `Oh yeah…I guess I did do that, didn't I?'
“Yes!” Yuka shouted, pumping her fist into the air. “I was routing for you all along, Kouga-kun,” she said.
“Oh, yes, me too!” Ayumi declared, smiling at him in admiration.
“And me,” Eri nodded, grinning.
Kagome laughed when Kouga looked away sheepishly, a blush coating his cheeks. Despite his position, he smiled a little. So, even in Kagome's era, there had been some people who supported him. Wait until he told Ginta and Hakkaku.
“Oh, but Kagome,” Ayumi started, suddenly turning serious. “What are you going to tell Houjo-kun?”
Yuka and Eri blanched and “ooh-ed” as well.
Kouga frowned. “Who is this Houjo-kun?” he demanded, glaring down suspiciously at Kagome. What was it about that name that made him want to slaughter something?
“Just a friend, Kouga. Really,” she said when he raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.
“Yeah,” Eri agreed sarcastically. “A friend who's completely obsessed with you, Kagome.”
“Ooh, speak of the devil,” Yuka said with a grimace, taking a drink from her juice box.
Any attempt to grab Kouga and run was shortly made impossible. Houjo from Group E was already beside their table, smiling innocently at Kagome, a box wrapped in bright blue paper tucked under his arm.
“Good afternoon, Higurashi. I'm glad to see that you're feeling better.”
Kagome smiled awkwardly, silently wishing that he would hurry up and leave. Kouga was glaring at him with murder in his eyes, and she didn't want to make another scene.
“For you,” Houjo said, handing her the package. “Medicinal gloves for your health.” He informed her. “Wear them.” He finished with a smile.
It was not until Kouga started to growl, low in his throat, that the other boy realized he was sitting beside Kagome. “Oh, how very rude of me. Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Houjo Kadoma from Group E. I'm pleased to meet you…” He trailed off to allow Kouga to introduce himself.
“Yourouzoku Kouga.” He said with a stiff nod.
Houjo nodded confusedly when he did not recognize the name. “Did you just transfer here, Yourouzoku-san?” he asked. “I see you don't have a uniform yet.”
“No, no, Kouga isn't transferring. He's a good friend of my family's and he's just visiting for a while.” Kagome rambled nervously, unable to look him in the eye.
Kouga smirked devilishly. “It's just as she says, he said, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her tightly to him. “Kagome and I are very close friends.”
Ayumi's eyes widened and she looked from Kouga to Houjo in alarm. Yuka and Eri were snickering quietly behind their hands. Kagome was blushing furiously.
Houjo's eyes narrowed dangerously. “I see.” Turning his eyes slowly away from Kouga's smug grin of victory, he smiled at Kagome. “Well, I'll see you around, Higurashi.” With one final glare at Kouga, he turned on his heel and walked away.
The moment he was out of ear-shot, Kagome turned on Kouga and frowned. “Kou-ga!” she hissed.
“What?” he asked, blinking innocently.
“Do you honestly have to get that jealous over me?” she asked, sighing and rubbing her temples.
“J-Jealous?! I wasn't- well, maybe I was a little jealous,” he muttered sheepishly.
“A little?!”
Kouga smiled. `I can't help it, Kagome,” he said with a laugh. “I love you so much…I just want you all to myself.”
“Aww…” Ayumi, Eri, and Yuka all sighed in unison.
Kagome cleared her throat, a blush creeping onto her cheeks. “Fine,” she said with an exasperated sigh. “I give up. Just don't…kill anyone, all right?”
The warning bell sounded, which meant that lunch was over. Kagome's friends said their goodbyes and left for their respective classes. As Kagome threw away her trash, she realized with sudden dread what her next class was…
oooooo
“Ah, sensei, this is Yourouzoku Kouga, a friend of my family's.” Kagome recited the rehearsed excuse she had been using all-day and gestured to Kouga, who nodded from beside her. “He'll be staying with us for a few days, so he had to come to school with me today. I hope that's not a problem, sensei?”
Kagome flinched as Katsura-sensei threw back his head and laughed. Standing up from his chair, he brushed off the sleeves of his red sports jacket and grinned. “'Course it's no problem, Higurashi!” His booming voice shouted. He lifted a hand and, to Kagome's dismay, ruffled her hair. Then, turning to Kouga, he ran his eyes up and down his body, scrutinizing every last muscle.
“Hmm,” he scratched his chin, deep in thought and circled him. Kouga eyed him guardedly from where he stood. “You look strong, son. You a good runner?” he asked.
Kouga smirked cockily in answer.
Kagome twitched as Katsura-sensei threw his head back and guffawed again. Wiping a tear from his eye, he slapped Kouga hard on the back.
“I like you, kid. Yourouzoku, right?”
Kouga nodded. “Yes, sir.”
“Well, I'll be watching you on the track today, then, Yourouzoku. That's what we're doing today, by the way, Higurashi.” He grinned when Kagome made a face. “Here's a spare uniform. You two hurry up and get changed, now.” He said, sitting back down in his chair and pulling out a clipboard to take the attendance.
Kouga glanced down at the red shorts and white T-shirt he was holding.
“You'll have to change into those, Kouga,” Kagome smiled apologetically up at him. “By yourself,” She whispered so only he could hear her.
Kouga gulped. “By my…”
“Just remember what I told you in the mall, Kouga,” she said with a smile. “Don't worry, you can do it.”
“Yoshi,' he exclaimed, staring down at the uniform that was gripped tightly in his hands.
“The boy's locker room is over there. If you get stuck…uh…just watch the other guys.” Kagome said, before disappearing completely behind a doorway behind him.
Kouga blinked. “Matte, Kagome!” He shouted, running in after her. `What do I do when I'm done?!”
“AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!”
“Hentai!”
-SLAP-
“What are you doing in here you pervert?!”
-WHAM-
“Get out!!”
-CRUNCH-
“JERK!!”
-BOOM-
“What's going on out there, you- AHH! KOU-GA!!!!!”
Luckily, Kagome hadn't yet started to change into her gym uniform. If she had, Kouga would probably have been unconscious; the girls were beating him so hard. Running out from behind her, she grabbed the swirly-eyed Kouga by his ear, just as one of her enraged classmates lifted a metal folding chair, and dragged him out of the room.
“That way! I told you it was that way!” she shouted, pointing toward the guy's locker room.
“I know, I know!” He muttered, rubbing his sore cheek. “But you didn't tell me what to do when I was done!”
Kagome sighed, slapping her hand to her forehead. “When you're done, you just wait here. Now go!”
“W-wakari!”
Kouga watched her disappear behind the doorway once again, then marched to the left, toward the boys' locker room.
“Well, kid, you've got nerve, I'll give you that,” Katsura-sensei said, clapping him on the back as he walked by, and hiding a grin behind his clipboard.
“Dude…” said one boy with short red hair, who had managed to change before his group of friends. “That was awesome!”
Another pair of boys in uniform glanced at him and snickered. “Nice try,” said one, jabbing his elbow into his friend's side. “But…”
“Denied!” The other shouted before both succumbed to laughing hysterically.
Kouga rolled his eyes. `How mature these youths from Kagome's time are,' he thought, smirking sarcastically.
By this time, he had made it to the other locker room. He found a secluded spot and began to change. Glancing awkwardly around his row of lockers, he spied the other boys and checked to make sure he matched them. He did. Pleased with himself, he left the locker room to find Kagome.
oooooo
Back in the girls' locker room, Kagome was finding it harder and harder to ignore the glares from her aggravated female classmates coming her way.
“Kagome,” one began in a disapproving tone. “What was with that guy?”
“Yeah,” another agreed. “Why are you even friends with that pervert?”
Kagome flushed scarlet. “Kouga isn't a pervert,” she started, ignoring the raised eyebrows and worried looks she was receiving. “He's just…he doesn't understand.” She finished with a shrug.
“Doesn't…understand?” a girl with long hair pulled into a high ponytail frowned.
“Well,” Kagome sighed. “Where Kouga comes from…” She trailed off, unable to come up with a believable excuse that quickly.
“Oh, you mean an all-boys' school?” asked a girl with short red hair.
“Yes!” Kagome grinned, snapping her fingers. “That's exactly what I mean!”
`Saved!'
When the other girls still looked doubtful, Kagome sighed and cleared her throat. “You see Kouga is very sheltered. He was home schooled until high school, and that's when he went to an all-boys' school,” she said, nodding as she spoke. This story was believable, in her opinion. She hoped the others bought it.
Kagome glanced up cagily, bracing herself for the worst. To her shock and amazement, no one looked disgusted anymore.
“An innocent guy?!” one demanded, smiling dreamily.
“That is just so cute!” Another squealed, hugging herself and smiling from ear to ear.
“Oh, my gosh,” one said to her friends. “We've got to go talk to him!”
To Kagome's disbelief and horror, the whole locker room full of girls agreed and scrambled out into the hall. Shoving her school uniform into her locker and slamming the door, she ran out of there as fast as she could. Kagome gaped, frozen in place.
He was surrounded.
“Hi, Kouga-kun,” one smiled up at him, batting her eyelashes flirtatiously.
“Sorry for hitting you earlier, I didn't mean it, I promise,” said another, touching his forearm apologetically with her fingertips.
“Me too!”
“And me!”
Kouga gulped, glancing from girl to girl warily. All were staring at him, smiling.
“Man,” a boy whispered to his friend. “You mean they actually like peeping toms? Let's try it tomorrow!”
Luckily for him, Katsura-sensei came to his rescue then.
“All right, already! Everyone out to the track, now!” he shouted. The girls gulped and dashed for the door that led outside. Finally, a path to him cleared out and Kagome jogged over to stand beside him.
“What was that all about?” He asked out of the corner of his mouth, still eyeing the females of the class with caution.
Kagome sighed, stepping through the doorway when he held it open for her. “It was all my fault, I'm sorry,” she muttered. “I should have just let them believe you were really a pervert.”
Kouga chuckled, shoving her playfully. “You're right. I think I preferred the slaps, scratches, and punches to whatever that was just now.”
“Good,” Kagome mumbled, almost threateningly.
Kouga smirked, narrowing his eyes at her. “'Do you honestly have to get that jealous over me?'” he quoted in an amused voice.
Kagome's cheeks reddened. “J-Jel-I most certainly-“ she broke off with a sigh, shyly glancing up at him.
He smiled, wrapping an arm around her waist. “You have nothing to fear, Kagome. I love you and only you. Now and forever,” he vowed, crushing her against him in a sideways hug. “Besides,” he added, releasing her just as Katsura-sensei looked their way. “You're so much more beautiful than any of those other girls.”
She slid her hand in his and squeezed, but had to let go shortly afterward; they had made it to the track.
“All right, give me five laps, running- no excuses,” Katsura-sensei demanded of the class, ignoring their groans. “Oh, and Yourouzoku,” he began, turning his attention to him. He pointed two fingers at his eyes and then to Kouga, who saluted in answer. Then, glaring at the rest of the class, he shouted, “Begin!”
