Chapter 2: one last night

Kouga spent the entire afternoon with Kagomae & her family; he hated the fact that she was moving, and even more so the fact that she was probably going to meet another, better guy and fall madly in love with him.

Kagomae keeps telling me I've got nothing to worry about but I can't help it Kouga thought morosely I wish she would just let me mark her as mine…then I wouldn't have to worry so much.

Kagomae refused to let him mark her, she knew yokai mated for life and honestly she wasn't sure she and Kouga would be together that long, she hated to plan for the future because she never knew what she would want tomorrow or the next day, "save tomorrow for tomorrow" that's what she always said (kind of corny I know but gimme a break, I'm making this up off the top of my head)

Kouga sighed and handed Kagomae the last of the boxes. This is it Kagomae thought my entire life packed up into boxes she sighed it doesn't even fill up the entire truck.

Rain started coming down suddenly, poring down, and reflecting every emotion Kagomae wished she could express. She had lost the ability to let herself cry a long time ago when her father had died in the car crash that had she not been a miko would've killed her too.

They both stripped off their shoes and socks and ran out into the rain like they always did when it got like this, just running and spinning in the grass, letting the rain wash over them, clearing away any thoughts in their heads. She tackled him and sent them both rolling on the ground "I love you!" Kouga shouted over the roar of the thunder, Kagomae looked at him, for the first time she felt like she could cry in front of someone, silent tears started streaming down her face "I love you too!" she shouted back.

Kouga could smell her tears, he had spent many nights curled up beside her - he would sneak into her room at night sometimes, he knew she never locked it, and even on nights as stormy as this she'd leave it a crack open so she could hear the rain- she cried in her sleep sometimes, all those tears she wouldn't let fall during the day would come out.

When he asked her about it she said he was crazy, that she never cried, not even in her sleep, but he knew her too well and reached up to her face and gently wiped the mixture of tears and running eyeliner from her face.

"We should go in!" she yelled as a lightening bolt struck a nearby tree "good idea!" he yelled back as the thunder roared louder.

They reached the house a few minuets later, both soaked to the very core and laughing and wheezing at the same time -they both smoked and running was Kagomae's least favorite activity- Kouga regained his composure first as Kagomae's little brother Souta opened the door.

"Moms pissed" he said looking at their drenched forms disapprovingly " I found your shoes and tried to tell her that you two had just gone for a run like you always do during stormy weather"

Kagomae sighed and said exasperatedly "thanks Souta but you know mom, she only hears exactly what she wants to hear…I think that's why she got fired." And then to Kouga she added, "c'mon, were going to straiten this thing out before I'm grounded into the next century"

Kouga gulped "we? Who said anything about we? Your on your own babe" Kagomae's mom was even scarier then Kagomae when she got angry…and he was terrified of Kagomae when she was mad.

Kagomae was livid! "What? You're not going to help me?! O you better believe you're helping, or your gunna see one mad miko!" she smiled at him suddenly "and besides, it's not like you have a choice anyway."

Before Kouga had a chance to react Kagomae was dragging him through the living room and into the kitchen where Kagomae's mom always waited when she was mad.

"Mom?" Kagomae asked when she and Kouga had been standing there for a few minutes and she still hadn't said anything.

"What were you thinking? Running off like that! You aught to be ashamed of yourself Kagomae Lyn Higarushi!" she paused to take a breath & a sip of her vodka "And as for you!" she was on a role now… it'll be best if I just let her get this out of her system now Kagomae thought besides, its not like she's gunna listen now anyway "…And you better call your brothers and let them know that you'll be spending the night here cause there is no way I am letting you go out in that storm!" Mrs. Higarushi finished, panting for breath.

"Now" she said, "which one of you has got the smokes? I think I'm gunna take it up again" she said smiling sadly. Her mom had had to quit smoking for the job she had just gotten fired from, Kagomae remembered how much her mom had loved smoking, whenever Kagomae would bring up her quitting when she was little her mom would always reply `honey, I quit smoking when I was pregnant with you & with your little brother…that was enough' she had quit because she really needed the job to pay for Kagomae's braces, now the braces were off & she didn't have a job to worry about getting fired from if she came to work smelling, how her coworkers had so generously put it, like an ash tray.

Kagomae just laughed & went to go get the pack out of her purse, a while ago her mom had tried to make her quit but Kagomae liked smoking just as much as her mom did.

When she got back downstairs she took out three & a lighter & they all just sat there smoking, thinking, her mom about the past, Kagomae about the present & Kouga about the future.

Later that night after Mrs. H. had long gone to bed Kouga snuck up to Kagomae's room slowly opened the door & lightly shook Kagomae awake. "W… what? … Kouga?" she asked, disoriented. "Yeah, um…Kagomae would you mind if I sleep with you tonight? I just…" his sentence was cut off there as Kagomae kissed him gently & let him curl up next to her.

"Night" Kagomae said

Kouga just murmured something & buried his face in her long ebony hair.

A/N: ok, this chapter's a little longer then the last one, comments are welcome…& yes I know I spelt Kouga's name differently in the first chappie but I honestly don't know how to spell it so : p leave me alone! ^.^
