Chapter 10: Heavenly Visit
`I have to give him this…Even though he denied me happiness; I will not return the favor.' She smiled her goodbyes at her companions, and looked solemnly at a shocked Sesshomaru, who stood frozen to the spot. However, before she could plunge the arrow head into her chest and let her soul take flight, strong arms wrapped around her, and green poison devoured the offending arrow that would have taken her life—the arrow that would have been her escape from unhappiness.
“Doushite?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~
Kagome turned around and gazed into sharp golden eyes for the millionth time, instantly paralyzed. `Why do I have to be turned into a brainless vegetable every time I gaze into his eyes?' She struggled against his arm, trying to reach for another arrow to successfully take her life, and even turning around to grab a spare sword from Sesshomaru's belt. “Don't even think about it, miko. You have a duty.” Kagome inwardly sighed at his words. Sesshomaru was right…how cowardly would it be of her to take her life when youkai and humans alike were on the verge of an all out war? She hung her head in defeat, slumping in Sesshomaru's arms in defeat.
“Kagome! Revive her! Just do something!” Inuyasha yelled at the now idle Kagome while tending to a `dying' Kikyo. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he held Kikyo's head in his lap, stroking her hair absentmindedly. A growl held him back from killing Kagome himself; he looked up at his brother, seeing an air of protectiveness and possessiveness in his eyes. What would he do to Kagome?—the timid girl now lacing her fingers around his purple-striped wrists, a feeling of content lacing her aura. She was content that someone cared enough to stop her from doing the right thing. Although she didn't appreciate that she couldn't help Inuyasha out, Kagome was happy that someone disregarded that and focused on her safety instead.
“If you will excuse me and Kagome, Inuyasha, I will get a servant to tend to your dead miko and order rooms for your companions.” With that, Sesshomaru laced his fingers with Kagome's and turned to walk up the stairs to his personal chambers. While they were in the hallway outside his room he whispered to her. “Kagome, why were you willing to take your life for one who is already dead?”
“Kikyo…is my incarnate. If she doesn't continue to be undead and fulfill her purpose, then what purpose have I? My purpose…is to make Inuyasha happy. To do this, I must complete the jewel to give him power, and step to the side when it comes to Kikyo to give him love…If I'm out of the picture and Kikyo can be with Inuyasha, then I've fulfilled my purpose.” She stated, fear and sorrow lacing her voice as she wondered what Sesshomaru would do to her if he thought she was trying to escape him. Instead of smacking her, he lifted up her chin to look her in the eye.
“Kagome”, using her name again, “Please don't leave me.” Kagome audibly gasped and looked up at the man leaning casually against the opposite side of the hallway. She wringed her fingers together, quickly flashbacking to the events that occurred in the bedroom just two feet to her left. She shivered and turned her head to the side, slowly slipping her eyelids over her eyes, instantly regretting it when she caught the sight of his blood red eyes laughing at her pain. “I don't understand you.” Kagome stated simply and continued to fist her kimono in her sweaty palms, her brows furrowing as she faced an inner battle.
He was this close to raping you, her conscience taunted her as she peered at the huge hole in the shoji door.
He comforted you when no one else would, Kagome-sama, the compassionate side of Kagome's psyche pleaded with her.
You are bound to him. This statement made by the deep recesses of her mind startled her. `What? Bound to him…? That makes no sense, he didn't mate me.' At this her eyes glazed over, alerting the taiyoukai, who was instantly by her side. “Kagome, what's wrong? Kagome!” She heard the faint yells of Sesshomaru as her world turned black, the color oozing out of her vision and being replaced with inky blackness. She blinked rapidly, trying to make out the marble floor underneath her, or the surrounding hallway that she was in. It was a fruitless attempt as unconsciousness took over her.
~~
A light, angelic voice bounced off the boundaries of her mind as she propped herself up on her elbows. “Kagome…Kagome, wake up, sweetheart.”
“Who's there? Show yourself…” Her weak voice escaped her dry lips as she attempted to get up, but to no avail. In a second attempt to see something as she drifted in this dreamlike state produced a beautiful woman, standing in front of her. Her ancient armor glinting in the sunlight and setting off her beautiful hazel eyes, the dark browns becoming a light yellow, making her eyes resemble sunflowers. Her black hair billowing around her teardrop face made her appear angelic as her pale white skin created an heavenly glow around her.
“Midoriko-sama!” Kagome instantly rose to her knees and bowed her head slightly in front of the revered miko. “Hai, hai, Kagome-sama. Please rise, your actions only serve to make me blush.” Kagome rose instantly, still looking nervously at her bare feet.
“How can I help you, Lady Midoriko?” Kagome nervously asked. She must be in deep shit if the most respected miko had to come and visit her while she was unconscious—her anxiety obvious as she straightened her sundress and fixed her hair. “That isn't the question young miko. The question is how I can help you. Child, you are special, indeed very special. I also understand your confusion concerning a certain Taiyoukai of the West. I'm afraid that this Midoriko has some explaining to do.” Midoriko explained before plopping down on the soft grass, and motioning for Kagome to do the same.
“Let me begin. Kagome, as you very well know, the Shikon no Tama is only in this world because you are the vessel that returned it to the Sengoku Jidai. Therefore, you have a special aural bond with the Shikon jewel, as it does with you.” Midoriko waited for Kagome to nod, slightly amused at her dropped jaw. “However, what may come as a real shock is that you also share an aural bond with Sesshomaru-sama. This came from the fact that you healed his arm with your miko powers, leaving an eternal imprint on his aura.”
Kagome gasped. She was bonded to the Western Lord and she had no knowledge of it whatsoever. “But, Midoriko-sama, what does this mean? What is different between us?” Midoriko cleared her throat a bit irritatingly, signifying that she was about to answer that question. Growing sheepish, Kagome listened. “As you have probably noticed, you cannot bring harm to the taiyoukai as long as you use your miko powers because of the Shikon. The Shikon jewel desires peace…and you will be the one to bring it peace and remove it from existence, however, Sesshomaru is the one who will help you in this quest.”
`Ugh…I thought that she would be the one to liberate me from him…' Not letting her disappointment show one her face, she let the miko warrior continue with her explanation, absorbing this information that revealed much about her stay with the youkai lord. “Therefore, the Shikon will not let you destroy Sesshomaru, but become apart of his life. He realizes how powerful you are through your Shikon-laced aura, and it will only be a matter of time before he accepts you as a companion in life, or as a life mate. The Fates have already chosen your destiny, Kagome-sama, so it would be prudent not to mention this meeting with the taiyoukai, ne?”
As quickly as she had come, Midoriko left in a wispy blur and left a very…enlightened Kagome.
~~
Kagome stirred and her eyes immediately shot open as her arms flew up in the air, hoping to grasp onto something, anything. When her hand fisted in a silk kimono, she gasped and instantly regretted ever talking to Midoriko. She would have to put up with Sesshomaru until he accepted her? When the hell would that be? A light frown graced her beautiful features as a pale hand encased hers and held it as if it would slip away. A ghost of a memory shot into her mind of a when a plaguing nightmare was subdued by those same arms, the same person. She shuddered and accepted the embrace that awaited her sleeping body.
“Kagome, daijobu desuka?” She had fainted so suddenly, alarming Sesshomaru as he gently sniffed her for illness so that she wouldn't notice. Finding that her pleasant scent wasn't marred by any malady, he set her back down on her futon, looking at her fondly. Little did she know that the cunning miko that had been the embodiment of the Shikon no Tama not only visited the miko during her state of unconsciousness, but also spoke to the taiyoukai while he watched over his miko.
“Hai, I'm fine Sesshomaru-sama.” Kagome replied, seeming a bit dazed as she looked out the window on the adjacent wall. What would the days following bring? When would they fight Naraku…or better yet, when would Sesshomaru actually respect her? Realizing that it was probably close to midnight, Kagome inquired about her companions, pained that she couldn't spend some quality time with them after telling herself that they needed to go separate ways.
“We can see them in the morning, Kagome.” Kagome looked up into his eyes when he said this.
“Sesshomaru.” She said with a stern voice.
“Hai, Kagome?”
“You did it again, just now…You say my name every time you speak to me now…A…Arigato!!” She turned around on the futon and launched herself into his arms, not caring that he could disembowel, behead, eviscerate, suffocate, or strangle her in seconds. Not caring that he would think of her emotion-filled embrace as a silly ningen action, and not caring that he would push her away and be done with her. She did care however, that he wrapped his arms around her in return, resting his chin on the crown of raven black hair that rested on his chest. When her breathing slowed, he used his opposable tail to pick up the discarded furs and silk comforters, and drape them across their exhausted bodies.
For the first time in so many centuries, Sesshomaru sighed and let a deep sleep claim him, wrapping his arms tighter around the beautiful girl that tangled herself in his hair and rested her hands on his chest.
~~
“Kagome-chan, you sleep too much!” Kagome opened her eyes to a small, shrill voice coming from the edge of her futon. Laughing at Rin's naiveté, she stretched out on her cushion, knocking the covers off of her. `Since when did I have four legs?!' Still half-asleep (obviously) she looked at the arms encircling her torso, and the silver hair that cascaded around her in shiny rivulets, making the futon appear watery and mystical. She craned her neck backwards to look at the god of a youkai that had spent the night with her, which surprised her because she thought that Sesshomaru could only show as much tenderness as a cactus. She giggled, squirming out of his arms so that she could go behind the screen and get dressed.
“Oi, Kagome.” He called out to her. “I hope that you didn't forget about your training session this morning. You should be grateful that I let you sleep in, but that means this Sesshomaru will not be going easy on you.” He said with amusement when he heard her gasp. He saw her shoulders slump through the screen as she redressed into more appropriate attire. “Much better.” He said as she emerged from behind the screen.
Kagome was trying to appear as aloof and oblivious as possible, trying to hide the fact that Midoriko had appeared to her, telling her of her life's destiny. She inwardly shrugged, `How would Sesshomaru find out, anyway?' Her eyes watched him as he got up from her futon, and smoothed out his haori and hakamas, not a wrinkle marring their perfect silkiness. `No fair…a morning person is going to be training me from now on.' Kagome hoped to herself that none of her friends were awake to see her humiliating training session.
“Ready?” She chimed, and they walked to the dojo together in solitude. They reached the double doors, leading to the indoor dojo. Kagome almost shuddered when she remembered trying to parry and attack Sesshomaru on the slick cement, and the other events that occurred. She blushed and mentally slapped the image away, hoping that Sesshomaru didn't see her red cheeks. When she turned to face him, he lightly tossed the familiar blade and sheath over to her, taking his own sword in his hand.
He didn't waste any time and sprinted towards her, Kagome standing there as if a deer caught in the headlights of a monster truck. Gulping, she quickly drew her sword and supported it with both palms above her head, just in time to defend herself against Sesshomaru's downward slash. However, she didn't have the correct footing, and stumbled to the ground under the weight of his sword. She pushed up on her own blade to send his off of hers before she would hit the ground, but once again, Sesshomaru's foot caught her head just in time.
“Now, where were we, little girl? Ah yes, Lesson number three in combat. Never let your enemy hold you in a vulnerable position, especially when they have control of their sword.” He placed his blade against her neck for emphasis, but kept it mere inches away from really freaking her out. Helping her up, he walked to the opposite side of the dojo, and put their swords away.
“That's it? Is that the whole training session?” Kagome said, trying not to sound too excited, but when his answer came she was immediately crestfallen. “No, today we'll work on hand-to-hand combat. When you are facing Naraku, there is no doubt in my mind that there is a chance you will run out of arrows or lose your blade in the heat of battle. Therefore, you must rely on hand to hand combat.”
He motioned for her to come closer, an eerie look in his eye. “You have an advantage over the entire race of youkai because you have miko blood. Observe.” He swiped at her, but before she could even flinch she erected a pink bubble around herself that cackled with miko energy when Sesshomaru tried to break through. “Very good. That was your first lesson. Reaction.” He lunged at her again, but this time from the side. Kagome didn't see it because he had moved quickly and into her blind spot, therefore when she felt his claws slightly graze her taijiya outfit, she moved to the opposite side in order to defend herself.
“Now, we will perfect your miko defenses, and also work on some offensive stances and attacks. Follow my lead.” He led her through a series of stances, explaining each ones benefits and how to parry an attack that would come down on each certain stance. This was all very boring for Kagome, and she found herself becoming anxious for when she would actually fight. “Kagome, kick me with your right leg to my chest.” This certainly got her attention, and snapped her out of her daze.
Licking her lips, she held her arms up as a boxer would and breathed deeply before kicking her leg out, hoping to come in contact with his firm chest. Instead, he caught her leg and tripped her left leg, causing her to fall to the ground, with no one to catch her. Sesshomaru bent her right leg in order to prevent injury and fell down with her, holding her in that position. “Since you are a human, hand to hand combat will be very difficult, but you can defend yourself if you are alone or if you are unarmed. This time will be different; this time I want you to concentrate your miko energy on the body part that you will use to strike with.”
Kagome nodded, then closed her eyes, freeing her mind of worries and anxieties, and only focused on powering her leg up with miko energy. She opened her eyes with a flash and proceeded to kick Sesshomaru again. She met air again, and opened her eyes to see that Sesshomaru wasn't there. She put her hands on her hips and sighed in exasperation. `This is too hard with a youkai like Sesshomaru.'
“Eep!!” She squealed when she felt his arms wrap around her from the back, pressing her small body against his muscular frame. He bent down and whispered in her ear. “You're getting very good…but not good enough to catch this Sesshomaru.” He bent his head down lower to inhale her scent, which was tinged with arousal and fear. He heard her take a sharp breath when he kissed her neck, holding her tighter and closer to his body.
`What is he doing…?' Kagome found herself lost in his embrace, surrounded by his scent and his very aura, drowning herself in the masculinity of his strong arms and hard body. Her breathing became shallow as she dug her fingernails into his forearms, reacting to his tongue against her heated flesh.
“Come, you are probably hungry.” Sesshomaru released her after kissing her cheek, keeping his hand on her back as he escorted her through the hallways and back to her room so that she could change.
`The little miko isn't well versed in youkai seduction and courtship…' He now thought of how his aura and scent covered every inch of her body, warning other youkai to keep off, and relished in the thought that she had reacted to his kisses. A sinister grin rose to his lips as he sauntered down the hallway, feeling as if he was on top of the world…
