Chapter 13: Is It the End?

She jerked away from him, tears in her eyes. She shook her head. “I don't care if harm comes to me, Sessho…I don't want my f-friends to get hurt…” She started to sob.

“Kagome…” Sesshomaru held her close, lending her his shoulder and his loving embrace as they both thought of what lay ahead for the ragtag group.

Kagome shouldered her relatively small pack, and started down the steps of the palace, trying to catch up to her group. She stopped when she reached the edge of the woods and looked back to gaze upon the majestic beauty that had housed her for a couple months now. Sighing, she ran to catch up with Sesshomaru and the rest, dreading what they would most likely encounter during the night. It had plagued her as she started packing, thinking of the dreams she had had when she realized how close the final battle was. Taking a deep breath, she walked alongside the great Taiyoukai, and held his hand.

Sango and Miroku were further ahead, scouting out the surrounding area on Kirara while Inuyasha followed them close behind, sniffing out the forest floor for signs of Naraku's deadly miasma. When Kagome and Sesshomaru had cleared the initial trees of the forest, he lifted her onto his back and made his way to flank Inuyasha, also searching for any signs of battles or blood that had been spilled by Naraku. He could feel Kagome shaking through her thin taijiya outfit; he reached his hands up to cup her bottom, hoping to cheer her up. It worked, and she giggled in his ear when Inuyasha looked over at the happy couple.

However, the happiness wouldn't last very long…

A scream alerted the two inuyoukai and caused the young miko to scream her friend's name. “SANGO-CHAN?! Daijobu desuka?!” She leapt off of Sesshomaru's back when they reached the fallen taijiya, and kneeled down next to her. “What happened, Sango-chan?” When she rolled the young woman over she saw a single gash adorn her torso, and looked up just in time to see the culprit. Kagome jumped back from her fallen comrade just in time as a single sickle bore down upon her, intent on taking her life.

“Inuyasha! Get Sango out of danger!” Quickly drawing out a small dagger, she squinted and hurled it at the young male taijiya, hoping to preoccupy him so that she could go tend to Sango's wounds. An arm caught her as she turned to go to the tree where her friend rested. “Sesshomaru…Onegai…Don't kill him!” She hurriedly wrenched his arm off of her small form and scampered across the clearing, looking into Sango's sorrow filled eyes.

Her tears made small wet spots on Sango's matching taijiya outfit as she bent over her, bandaging the small wound that probably hurt more mentally than physically. The tortured woman had gone through enough. This was the last time she would see her brother alive…or the last time she would view him as a killer. Springing up and surprising the miko, who was currently soothing her, Sango made her way back to the battle and threw a reassuring smile back to Kagome. “I'm fine, Kagome-chan! Let's go kick some ass!”

Kagome smiled weakly, and made her way back to Sesshomaru's side, preparing for the wave after wave of youkai that would try to take each one of their lives. She took a deep breath and readied her bow and arrow. When she felt the closest youkai aura coming from above, she pointed a sacred arrow to the trees and smirked when she heard a dull thud resound through the forest, signifying the beginning of the long, formidable battle.

Sango and Miroku were doing quite well against the hordes of lesser youkai sent their way, Sango using both katana and Hiraikotsu to slay many demons simultaneously and Miroku sending out ofudas and using his staff to rend the flesh of many youkai. Kagome looked over at Inuyasha, who constantly unleashed his Kaze no Kizu to take out the bulk of the youkai army. Sesshomaru was using claw, sword, and poison, and Kagome fought next to him with her miko energy. At her feet was a little Shippou who used his foxfire whenever necessary, but never left the shield of his mother.

The youkai hordes began to recede after a while, Kagome perceiving it as the calm before the storm. Sesshomaru stood ready and able right next to her, growling to himself through his bloodlust. He had seen these kinds of battles before, but was even more riled up because of the fact that his mate was standing right next to him. He lifted his elegant nose up in the air and tested the environment, seeking out whatever would come next. He could feel Kagome tense when she extended her miko to hunt for the hanyou; her head shot up from her trance and Sesshomaru growled as he sensed the same thing.

Letting a single arrow fly, Kagome watched as a blue aura made itself known, deflecting an arrow that would have rendering Naraku helpless. She snorted, and readied another arrow, just in case. Sesshomaru and Inuyasha tightened their hands around their blades, Miroku clenched his staff with a death grip, Kirara's demonic flames flared, Shippou fell back from the battle, and Sango shouldered her Hiraikotsu and got into a readied stance. Looking across at their comrades, each warrior nodded…a silent recognition of the danger to come. A vow to each others' safety made in solitude.

A single gruesome tentacle shot out, an invitation sent out for the other participants to lay into their opposition, and was easily deflected by Inuyasha. He smirked, but it was instantly wiped off of his face when what looked like a tentacle armada flew out from Naraku's hiding place. Pieces of flesh dropped to the ground, and the warriors of good executed their attack. Naraku revealed himself, but no one attacked. In both of his palms held the heart of Kagura and Kanna…they were traitors. Kagura signaling the group to Naraku's attacks, and Kanna aiding her. Both hearts glowing a bloody red were silenced simultaneously, and sickening screams from a place unknown resounded throughout the forest, setting the groups nerves on edge.

“HOW DARE YOU, NARAKU!” Kagome drew her katana, declaring to herself that it would be much stronger than her sacred arrows. Filling it with her miko power, which impressed everyone, she ran at Naraku, each of her companions gasping as she rushed into danger. However, Sesshomaru was there to stop her attack as he used his youkai speed to pummel into Naraku first, using Toujikin to its full potential. Naraku drew his own blade, no doubt forged from pure evil, and began to duel with the Taiyoukai of the West.

“Sesshomaru!” Kagome screamed as Naraku gained the advantage on the youkai lord, his tentacles proving to be too much for Sesshomaru. Kagome ran forward and braced herself against his back to take a deadly tentacle for his sake because he never would have seen it coming. Her shrill cry alerted the youkai lord, who whipped around and caught her limp body just in time. Sesshomaru rushed out of danger, taking his precious miko, and laid her down at the trunk of a tree. “Koi…I could have handled it… Ai shiteru.” He kissed her lightly, not wanting to injure her, and quickly ripped his outer haori to replace the taijiya suit that was ripped apart from the almost deadly tentacle. This was the best he could do, and trusted that she would implement her miko powers to take care of herself. She was strong.

Eyes bleeding red, he growled loudly, intimidating Naraku, who now faced a very pissed off group. Kagome turned weakly to watch the battle, praying that she would heal soon so she could protect her friends. She turned her head and a shocked expression marred her beautiful face as she saw Shippou get knocked around by a tentacle. “Gomen…nasai, Shippou-chan…” A tear ran down her cheek. Sango was battered by her own Hiraikotsu, and Kohaku had made many lacerations, cuts, and bruises appear on her body. Miroku was forever plagued by Naraku's insects, and was having a hard enough time handling the contemptible tentacle. Inuyasha was getting tired at a rapid pace, having used his Kaze no Kizu innumerable times.

Kagome cried for her friends. She cried for her mate, and watched as he narrowly escaped every blow that Naraku dealt. One by one…her friends started to fall…and she would lie there watching them.

“SHIPPOU! NO!!” Shippou had turned around to check on a miniscule Kirara, who was recovering slowly from a miasmal blast. A tentacle ripped right through him and held his tiny beating heart from his lifeless body. Kagome retched, not believing that her son had just been ripped apart before her very eyes. Sobs wracked her already weakened frame, and her eyes glazed over. `I can heal him…the jewel…' She turned back to the battle, trying not to let her eyes stray to the mutilation that was her kitsune son.

Kagome rejoiced when she saw Sango quickly recover from Kohaku's advances, and parry every swing of his sickle. However, when she had reached for her katana, finally deciding to get rid of her soulless `brother', both sickle and tentacle came toward her. The tentacle was easily slain, but this caused her to forget about the deadly sickle that embedded itself in her back. “KOHAKU…WHY!?” She screamed at the empty brown eyes that used to be so kind…so warm… Her eyes fogged over, but she fought…she fought to stay alive. Hearing the sickening sound of a blade being sinisterly pulled from a sheath caused her to raise her own katana, hoping to block the attacks from her little brother.

Blood spilled freely from wounds all over her body as Sango whimpered to herself, willing herself to stand up and face the evil before her. “SANGO-CHAN…RUN!” Sango turned her head to acknowledge the friendly voice, but it slowly faded out as her head was separated from her body. Kagome screamed and covered her mouth with her hand, watching the blood spurt from Sango's once delicately beautiful neck, and run down her brother's sword. She sobbed. `D-doushite? DOUSHITE?!' She let the tears run freely as she tried repeatedly to heal herself…she just didn't have enough strength.

Miroku was impaled by his own staff after he was weakened by Naraku's poison insects, a repercussion for using his kazaana, taking Kohaku with it, as a last resort. Inuyasha had been pierced multiple times by Naraku's tentacles…it was only Sesshomaru who had been surviving the vile hanyou. However…they were forgetting one person.

A light, airy laugh graced the air as an eerie presence demanded center stage in the bloody battle. Looking upon the dead ningens that scattered across the field, Inuyasha's blood that tainted the grass, and the eddies of miasma around Sesshomaru's feet, Kikyo simply laughed. Her eyes then fell upon Kagome.

“Hello, bitch…I see you're almost ready to give up your soul, ne?” She laughed again, standing a safe distance away from the wrath of the remaining group. Kagome glared…wishing that she had enough strength to do more.

Inuyasha growled as Naraku traced Kikyo's form with a tentacle, his eyes slightly tinting pink, but nothing more as he tightly gripped the Tetsusaiga. “Oh…koi…the fun we are going to have finishing off the stupid hanyou, arrogant youkai, and helpless miko. However, I will be the one to enjoy this…you have served me well.” Grasping said tentacle around the dead miko's neck, he crushed it easily, and let the clay and bones fall to the ground, transfixed as he watched the souls escape the pile of dust.

“Kukuku…now wasn't that unexpected?” He gauged Inuyasha's reaction and smirked when he saw the flare of anger.

“You fucking bastard!” Inuyasha readied the Kaze no Kizu, but was stopped by multiple tentacles flying in his direction. Sesshomaru leapt to his brother's aid, but to no avail. Tentacles shot out toward him to, occupying his sword as he watched his brother get speared by a dozen miasma filled tentacles.

“INUYASHA!!!” Kagome sat up and tried to stand. She couldn't take it, her friends were getting hurt, and now her best friend was dead. Tears blurred her vision as she took a couple of steps, willing her miko straight to the wound in her stomach, but it was futile. She collapsed with a cry, and was motionless. She had given up. Her mate wouldn't be there to aid her in her mental battle as she gave up on life itself. Seeing her friends being literally torn from her had caused her mind to go into mental turmoil…it was all for this fucking jewel. She sobbed against the dirt, not caring if Naraku would come upon her in mere seconds and slay her with a single stroke of his pernicious blade.

However, hearing the painful howl of her once powerful, proud, and beautiful mate set her adrenaline running. She looked up to see her mate fall…her Sesshomaru collapse to the ground, eyes closed, breathing undetected, heartbeat faint. She let out a feral snarl as her eyes glowed blue and her hair swirled around her in ominous wisps, giving her an ethereal, but dangerous look. Her voice rose above the deafening silence. Her voice like a beacon for the dead souls that cascaded around her. Her voice was laced with the strength lent to her from the Shikon, letting her powerful aura flow through her vocal chords.

“Die, Naraku.” She stood up and took a couple steps to the amazed hanyou, then let out a painful scream as she unleashed the miko powers she had been born with. The dormant flood of power overwhelmed the evil in the area and quickly disposed of any remnants of the youkai battle, of the blood upon the ground, and of Naraku himself. She had purified an almost 4 mile radius, she being the epicenter of purity that overtook every being within her reach. The dead were sent to the beyond…and the wounded returned to their vigor. She gazed around at what she had done, and at her stirring mate. Clasping the jewel, she was truly content, and collapsed to the ground. Raven black hair falling over her thin shoulders and blue glow receding back into her small body.
