In response to criticism, I'm going to do my best to make Akumu a little bit more believable. Won't be too hard, actually...and I thank all of you for telling me so. Thanks a bunch and please tell me whether or not this works for ya!!

Chapter Four: A Bleak Horizon...
********************************************************* ***
Inuyasha sat perched in the highest limb of the God Tree, his keen, golden eyes watching the new sun rise in the morning sky, painting the horizon in bright shades of reds and oranges. The forest was just awakening to the day, the village nearby still asleep and dreaming.
He glanced down at the precious bundle wrapped in his arms, a small smile crossing his face.
Inuyasha had carried Kagome here from Akumu's forest, not wanting to be anywhere near the place where they'd both nearly lost their lives...or where the danger of attack was so great. Whether or not Sesshomaru's warning was true, he had decided to take his brother's advice and get as far away from there as possible.
Kagome moaned lightly, curling into his kimono, clutching the white fabric in her hands. She had been clinging to him ever since the night before, even during the trip here. It made Inuyasha's heart soar that such a wonderful person had chosen him to be with and to mate with.
Mate.
A wave of depression washed over the hanyou at the thought. In a sense they were mates...his scent was inside her body and he had broken her barrier before any other could. But, he never marked her. Why?
Inuyasha reached down, brushing aside her ink black hair and gazing at the soft skin of her neck. He lowered his head, gently licking at the junction of her neck and shoulder...the place that should hold his mark. He shivered as his tongue ran over the skin, tasting the salty yet sweet tang of her body. She tasted as good as she looked...a taste that Inuyasha would learn to love and savor.
Kagome arched her neck slightly at Inuyasha's constant licking, a content sigh escaping her lips.
"Inuyasha..."
The smile returned to the hanyou's lips. She was dreaming about him. Inuyasha sniffed at her. She was getting aroused, and his ministrations weren't helping. He pulled at the red haori that he put around her body the night before, wanting to get at the bare skin underneath. He pulled at it until the cleavage of her breasts was exposed to his heated gaze and his warm mouth.
He felt Kagome's hands travel up from his chest to his hair, tugging at the dragon tails that decorated his face.
"Good morning, Inuyasha."
The inu grunted against her skin, nipping at her now visible nipples that crowned her round peaks. Kagome moaned as he pulled the dark mounds, drawing it into his mouth. Her hands slid up to his triangle ears, gently massaging them in time with his tongue as it rolled around her nipples.
She let her head fall against his shoulder, closing her eyes as Inuyasha continued to love her.
Suddenly Inuyasha looked up over Kagome's shoulders, his eyes narrowing dangerously. He slowly pulled Kagome from his shoulder, wrapping the girl back up in his haori. Kagome opened her eyes, staring into the hanyou's golden orbs.
"Inuyasha...what's wrong?"
The young miko looked behind her, "Who is it?"
Pushing the girl against the tree trunk, Inuyasha stepped in front of her, reaching behind him for Tessaiga. "Be quiet…"
Kagome pulled the red haori tight around her body, her keen brown eyes searching the forest floor below. It was then she noticed the dead silence of the forest…everything seemed to be caught in a dead still. The soft cries of birds were gone…the rustle of tree leaves had vanished…even the wind seemed to have fallen into a deep cavern of silence.
She moved closer to the warm body in front of her, clutching the back of his kimono. "Inuyasha…"
The body twitched underneath her soft touch. Kagome's eyes looked up to his, only to find his face bathed in shadows from his hair. The snap of a twig drew her attention back down to the forest floor, the break resounding against the harsh quiet.
A streak of black flashed from the underbrush coming to a pause beneath the tree on which they sat. Kagome's breath was knocked from her as if she'd been punched. A tiny whimper escaped from her throat as she stared into the piercing eyes of Akumu.
The wolf's lips pulled back, baring his glistening white teeth, long slides of drool pooling over the side of his mouth. He slowly licked his lips, taking a step closer to his prey.
"Inuyasha!" Kagome hissed urgently, "Inuyasha it's him!"
The hanyou let out a low growl, his body bristling underneath her very fingertips. There was a loud clatter as Tessaiga slipped from his grip, collapsing to the ground below. Akumu's grin widened as he watched the infamous sword hit the dirt.
Kagome's jaw half dropped in shock, "Inuyasha! What are you doing?" She gripped his white shirt tighter, her eyes narrowed in worry. "Why did you let go of the sword?"
"Get the fuck off of me…"
The young miko froze at the sound of his voice. It was dripping with undeniable hatred. Inuyasha shook her hand from his shoulder, slowly turning his red eyes to her face. Kagome chocked back a horrified gasp at the sight of the purple streaks stretching across his cheeks.
"No…Inuyasha…"
The hanyou turned completely, balancing himself on the thick limb as she stood up. He stared down at Kagome, lips pulled back in a fierce snarl. "My Kagome…"
Kagome backed away from him, pressing up against the tree truck, "In…Inuyasha!"
"Bitch…" Inuyasha's voice was a low, harsh growl, "You no good bitch…don't you understand anything?"
"What are you…?"
"What the fuck made you think I actually cared about you?" his hot breath rolled across her face as he leaned in, his lips brushing against hers, "I've always desired Kikyo…she is the one I want to bear pups with. Not some pathetic human like you."
A wave of cold fury washed over Kagome at these words. She eyes narrowed she uttered the one words that would stop him. "Oswari!"
The purple light surrounded Inuyasha's neck, but the hanyou simply laughed, reaching up a hand to grasp the necklace. "Baka…that won't work on me anymore." Kagome watched in horror as the beads flew from around his neck, the subduing spell broke as easy as he had the necklace.
Inuyasha threw the broken beads to the ground, lunging at Kagome. She screamed as he reached underneath his haori, viciously thrusting his fist inside of her tight channel. Kagome cried out in pain, her back arching as Inuyasha pumped his fist in and out of her body ruthlessly.
"No! Oh please God, no!"
Inuyasha's tongue ran over her skin as his other hand came down to the ties of his hakama. "Bitch…I'm going to use you like you should be used. Akumu promised me I could have you as my own."
Kagome squeezed her eyes shut, "Inuyasha wait…" she pleaded, "I'm already yours, remember? You made me yours already…"
"Not yet…you still belong to that fucking dog hanyou…"
Kagome's eyes flew open, staring into the dark eyes of Kouga. The wolf youkai grinned at her before removing his fist and thrusting deep into her sheath, tearing the unprepared walls with one quick move. Tears sprang from Kagome's eyes as the wolf viciously raped her, his tongue lolling out of his mouth as his body moved against hers.
"Keep quiet, bitch…now that you're mine, there's nothing that hanyou bastard can do…"
Kagome struggled against him, trying to push him off her body. Kouga grabbed her hands, jerking them above her head, his length plunging into her tight cavity as deeply as he could muster.
Another pair of hands joined Kouga's and Kagome's eyes jerked open, staring into the deep amber eyes of Inuyasha…
********************************************************* ********************
Kagome jerked away, the feel of Inuyasha's fiery kisses still hovering on her breasts as the hanyou gently caressed her. Her hands still captured Inuyasha's ears, now frozen in shock from her nightmare.
Inuyasha could feel her rapidly beating heart against his lips as he raised his eyes to her shadowed face. He leaned back from her, a frown of worry crossing his tan face.
"Kagome?" he whispered, brushing her raven locks from her face, "What's wrong?"
The young miko whimpered at his touch, the nightmare still fresh in her mind. She pulled the red haori back around her shoulders, lowering her eyes. "Maybe…we should head back to the village now."
"The village?" the hanyou's ears fell back against his head, "Did…did I do something wrong?"
Kagome sighed, scooting back a little, "No. I'm just tired."
"After all you've been through, you should be."
"Inuyasha," Kagome whispered, finally catching the hanyou's eyes, "What about Akumu?"
"What about him?"
"Aren't you worried he might come after us?"
Inuyasha's eyes hardened, "I already told you he's dead, Kagome. The only thing you need to worry about is Naraku."
"But what if he is alive? What happens if he comes after us?"
"Damn it Kagome, he won't!" the silver haired inu stared at her, "Where the hell are you getting this from?"
The young girl closed her eyes, "Nevermind…I'm sorry, Inuyasha…"
"You should be."
Kagome opened her mouth to retaliate, but decided against it, not wanting to ruin this morning any further with some petty argument. She turned and leaned back against his warm chest, instantly embraced by his large sleeves as they pulled her closer. Inuyasha gently nuzzled her neck, a worn smile on his lips as he whispered against her pale skin.
"I'd die before I'd let something happen to you, Kagome."
"I know..."
The hanyou wrapped his large hand around her significantly smaller one, giving it a tiny squeeze, "Then shut up. I never want to hear anything about that damn Akumu again, understand?"
Kagome allowed her hidden smile to finally emerge. Geeze Inuyasha could be overbearing sometimes...it was a trait she'd have to live with now. She nodded at the hanyou's demand. "Aa...I understand, Inuyasha."
"Good." Inuyasha stood up, lifting Kagome into his arms, "Then we'll head back to the village. I know everyone's probably bitching about us."
The inu-hanyou turned, bounding off of the sacred tree and to the forest floor, dashing over exposed roots and shrubbery as he bore Kagome on his back. The foliage whipped by as nothing but a green blur, leaving the young miko no chance to admire the scenery.
"Inuyasha? Do you think you could slow down a bit?"
"The hell what for!?" Inuyasha snapped in reply, "Damn it all, I want to get back to the village."
"What's your rush?"
The hanyou snickered evilly, "So I can brag to Miroku."
Kagome sucked in a sharp breath, her eyes narrowing. "Oswari!"
"Agh!!"
Inuyasha slammed into the ground, his face skidding through the dirt from the momentum of his body and Kagome, who was now sitting cross armed on his back, completely unfazed to the pain her hanyou was in. Inuyasha growled menacingly, starting to rise.
"Ka...go...me..."
"Oswari."
"Argh!"
Inuyasha's hole was slowly dug deeper and deeper until Kagome could literally stand on top of Inuyasha's back and just peer over the lip. The girl crawled out of the hole, glaring down at the hanyou below.
"Are you dead yet, Inuyasha?"
The beaten inu mumbled some incoherent response, his fingers twitching. Kagome turned away, her arms tightly drawn across her chest.
"Since you're just lying there, let's get something straight...I am not some prize of yours!" she glared at the ground, "If I even catch wind of you bragging to Miroku about us, I'll sit you until you're paralyzed from the neck down."
The ending crunch of Inuyasha's body being smashed into the ground once more was quite satisfying. She glanced over her shoulder as she heard Inuyasha rise. The poor beast slowly pulled his body from the crater, moaning in unsuppressed pain.
"Kagome...onegai..."
"Please what? Please say it again?" Kagome turned to face him.
Inuyasha cringed, weakly falling to his hands and knees before Kagome, "Please...please don't...I was only joking with you."
The young woman knelt down, lifting Inuyasha's head and brushing his lips with a soft kiss, "I know...but I haven't sat you since you came back to life. I kinda miss it..."
"Umm..." Inuyasha tried to deepen the kiss, but Kagome pulled back, "Now what the hell are you doing?"
Gathering the haori around her, she lifting the red clothing from her body and held it out, "Here. Things are going to be bad enough with Sango and Miroku questioning us...better not make it worse by my showing up in your cloths."
Kagome didn't catch the small look of disappointment that crossed Inuyasha's face as he pulled his haori over his head, shrugging it into place with a whispered: 'Yea...'. He crouched to allow her onto his back once again. As they bounded towards the village, Inuyasha relaxed and cherished the feel of Kagome's hands wrapped around his shoulders, her head resting against his back as she rode.
The smoke from cooking fires drifted over the treetops as they drew near, bombarding the hanyou with the sweet smells of roasted meats...villagers preparing breakfast for their families. He vaguely wondered if there was anymore Ramen left over from the past week.
"We're out of Ramen, Inuyasha." Kagome mumbled, reading the hanyou's mind. "You ate the rest of it yesterday."
Aw fuck...Inuyasha thought bitterly. He had a craving for some chicken ramen right now...a really bad craving.
"I think I'll go home today."
Inuyasha stiffened, "Go home? Back to your time? Why!"
"Because I'm tired Inuyasha!" she didn't want to tell him she was scared...scared of what last night might mean for both of them. What would happen if she was pregnant with his child? What about the Shikon no Tama? Would Inuyasha even want a child with her?
She needed to talk to her mom. As disappointed as the woman would be, she'd rather admit her sexual activities now before her mother found out by seeing her daughter six months pregnant with a hanyou child. It was just a hunch, but she was pretty sure her mother wasn't ready to be a grandmother yet.
As they broke out of the woods, Inuyasha paused, letting Kagome slide from his back and onto the worn path. The miko instantly slipped her hand in Inuyasha's pulling him until they were walking side by side across the rice fields. The peasants looked up from their work in knee high water, waving and nodding at the new couple as hey passed by.
"Kagome!!"
The girl grunted as a ball of fur collided with her chest, nearly knocking the wind out of her. She stumbled back, clutching Shippo against her body. "Hey Shippo...where is everyone?"
The tiny kitsune's smile faltered, "Miroku and Sango are with Kaede-sama...she's still not feeling too well."
"Is she that sick?"
"I think so...she fell down yesterday and she said her chest was on fire."
Kagome's heart clutched, "Her chest...do you mean she had a heart attack?"
Inuyasha snatched the young fox kit from Kagome's arm, holding him up to his face, "Baka speak clearly! What's wrong with that babaa?"
"Inuyasha!" Kagome scolded glaring at him, "You should respect your elders!"
The inu-hanyou dropped Shippo, setting Kagome with a hard glare, "I'm sick of being told that." He turned, leaping off into the village and leaving Kagome and Shippo alone.
Kagome watched as the temperamental Inuyasha rushed off, picking up Shippo again. The kitsune looked up at his adoptive mother.
"Where were you and Inuyasha anyway? And why do you smell like him?"
Kagome blushed, "We...we left looking for shards."
"With out me?" Shippo asked sadly, "Why?"
"Well..." Kagome slowly started walking, wondering how she should word this. It was hard enough lying to Shippo about why she and Inuyasha had really left...
Two days before, Kagome had finally told Inuyasha her feelings towards him, and it was a little sudden. They'd been sitting underneath the God Tree, silently enjoying each other presence when she turned to him, asking about if he still cared for Kikyo...if he would still go to Hell with her.
"This again?" Inuyasha had snarled angrily, "Why won't you drop it?"
"Because I want to know!" she'd been hurt at his abrupt dismissal of her worries. Especially since it was a worry about his well being and the well being of everyone else.
But he, being the ignorant bastard that he was, simply waved if off, standing and preparing to leave. "If I have to go...then I'll go. Nothing can change my fate as terrible as it might be. Not even you."
Kagome sighed, shaking her head to clear the memory. It was after he tried to storm off that she'd grabbed his haori, pulling him down for a chaste kiss. Inuyasha had immediately broken away, his eyes wide with shock. Kagome had hoped he would react differently...not so violent. But then...then things changed.
Inuyasha had pulled her to her feet; held her body at arms length before crushing it against him, his lips searching hers for more than just a simple kiss. He was searching for his very existence...
And Kagome willingly helped him find it, opening her mouth to allow his access to her mouth. His hands ran up her back as he thrust his tongue inside, moaning against her lips. He broke away from her lips, tilting her silken neck back and kissing his way down her soft, warm flesh.
"Inuyasha..."
He had started pulling at the buttons of her blouse, greedily sucking on the exposed flesh. The feel of his warm breath on her skin had finally pushed her to the edge. To her it was the right moment...the right time to finally be taken by the one she loved.
But then he'd stopped. Stopped. Never before had Kagome felt such frustration towards another being. If her head had been clear, she would have attacked him. But should fate have it, Inuyasha's mind converted back to the number one mission...jewel shards. The reason they'd been underneath the Gad Tree was because the two were preparing to leave.
Kaede had been sick for the past few days, so Miroku and Sango volunteered to stay behind and care for the ancient. Kagome had managed to convince Shippo to stay behind, telling the young kitsune that Sango needed his protection more than she did.
********************************************************* ********************
A persistent poking in the side of her face awoke Kagome from her daydream.
"Kagome? Kagome wake up!"
The young girl looked down at the tiny fox-youkai wrapped in her arms, "Sorry Shippo...kinda space out for a minute."
Shippo frowned slightly, "You never answered my question. Why wouldn't you let me come?"
"I told you earlier Shippo. Sango needed your protection."
"I want the real reason..." Shippo pressed skeptically, "Sango's been alone with Miroku before, and it took an awfully long time for a shard that was just a village away."
Kagome sighed and started walking again, "Maybe I'll explain it later..."
"When?"
When you're older...Kagome thought with a sigh. Shippo was growing up too fast for his own good. Ignoring the kit, Kagome continued her walk into the village, pausing just inside the entry to the old woman's hut.
"Now Shippo, I need to know how bad Kaede is."
Shippo looked to the sky, thinking for a moment, "Well she hasn't woken up yet...but Sango says she could at any minute. Jinenji might have some herbs that help."
Kagome shook her head and smiled, "No reason to travel way out there. I have some aspirin that will help." She took a deep breath, regretting what she was about to witness. She could only hope that the old woman's condition wasn't too bad. It would be hard to look at her prone face...especially if she was at risk of dying.
********************************************************* ********************
Kouga squatted on top of the high hill over looking the ancient miko village that had once housed and protected the Shikon no Tama from so many demons. A legend among his kind, the power that radiated from its modest temple was enough to make him shudder.
The fear wasn't lost on his escort who stood next to him, his tri-blade halberd clutching in its massive paws. Akumu couldn't help but grin as he watched the peasants of this quaint town mill about, lazily doing their work in the high sun.
So much blood...so much he could absorb...and he'd need it if he planned on killing the inu and his damnable brother. As strong as Akumu was, he had many doubts about his powers compared to the one named Sesshomaru. He'd given it his all in their last encounter, and the damn dog simply blocked his attacks like they were nothing.
Yea. They were hazards not only to him, but to everything that he planned. The massive wolf leaned down, whispering in Kouga's ear.
"Now, you know what you have to do, right?"
Kouga flinched slightly, "Yea...get the Shikon jewel fragments from Kagome and bring both the shards and Kagome back to you."
"And you'll get the girl, I'll get the jewel, and we're both happy, right?"
Kouga nodded mutely, still hesitant of voicing his betrayal aloud. Akumu's offer had been too tempting to pass down. A mate for him as well as being an ally to a powerful youkai? It was everything the simple wolf could want, even if it meant he would no longer be the alpha male. He was nearly knocked to the ground as Akumu's paw patted him on his back.
"You won't regret this, Kouga, that I promise you. By dawn tomorrow you'll be one of the most powerful youkai in Japan. No creature would dare challenge you with an ally like me and a miko for a mate. You've made the right decision for both you and your pack."
"It's not my pack anymore," Kouga mumbled, looking down at the village, "You've taken it from me."
Akumu snorted, righting himself, "Please. You call that rag-tag group of yours a pack? I rescued it from extinction instead of seeing the wolf name tarnished by your clumsiness."
A rabbit jumped to a rest in front of Akumu, twitching its nose curiously at the giant youkai. The demon lashed out faster than the poor creature could blink, effectively snapping its fragile neck and slicing the throat, bringing the gushing life blood to his lips. The wolf sighed with content as he threw the drained carcass at Kouga.
"Here. Eat."
Kouga glanced at the clump of dry flesh before tossing it away from him. Akumu's eyes flashing dangerously. "What the hell are you doing? That's fresh meat damn it!"
"Fresh meat? You've drained it dry, why the hell should I eat that?"
"Because I'm the alpha male and I gave it to you!" Akumu thrust his halberd at Kouga, causing the wolf to leap back, "I suggest you take care of that cocky attitude of yours, Kouga, or something bad might happen. Now eat the fucking rabbit."
His tail tucked between his legs in submission, Kouga quickly crawled over to the carcass, bringing the hard flesh to his lips as he watched Akumu and his weapon, a look of hatred crossing his eyes.
Instantly Akumu's fist came crashing across Kouga's face, causing him to drop the rabbit as he fell back. Akumu was on top of the other wolf in a heartbeat, his fangs bared as he snarled at the lesser Kouga.
"How dare you look me in the eye? Are you challenging me?"
Kouga quickly diverted his gaze, tucking his tail deeper between his legs, "No."
"No's not good enough." Akumu flipped Kouga on his belly, thrusting his hips against Kouga's, snarling savagely, "You'll submit to me as pack leader, understand? I am the alpha male and I won't stand for disobedience!"
Kouga stared at the ground angrily, waiting for Akumu to finish his dominating thrusts against his body, trying his best to relax and become the submissive servant he'd suddenly found himself as. Akumu quickly clamped his jaws around Kouga's neck, holding him before he tossed the youkai away.
Kouga continued to lie still, waiting for permission to rise.
"Get up."
He quickly crawled to his feet, head bowed. Akumu stood in front of him, chest heaving from anger.
"Now don't you forget, you gave the pack over to me, Kouga. You should be the most submissive one of all of you."
Kouga nodded, "Gomen, Akumu-sama."
Akumu sneered, "I suggest you and the rest of your pack get some rest for tonight. Once the village is sleeping we'll move in for the shards and the girl. Go."
Kouga nodded, whisking off into the deep woods where his pack waited. Ginta was instantly on his feet as Kouga came to a halt, the dirt whipping up around him.
"Kouga! Where were you?"
Kouga snarled angrily, "Don't worry about it. Go to sleep."
Ginta took a step back, "Kouga...what's the matter with you? Ever since that Akumu guy's been her, you've been on edge."
"Shut up and go to sleep!"
"Why are we here anyways?"
Kouga immediately leapt over, smashing his fist against Ginta's jaw. "I said shut your fucking mouth! And the rest of you, go to sleep!!"
Ginta looked up at him in shock before crawling away to where the rest of the pack huddled in fear and shock. They immediately backed away as Kouga moved amongst them, picking out a smooth, cold boulder in the shade and claiming it as his own. The rest were forced to lie on the hard, heated ground or in the thorny forest.
Kouga watched as his former pack fell into a deep sleep, absently noting the two missing wolves. He never cast them another thought, considering them to be nothing more than deserters, driven away by the overbearing new leader. He would have left no ago as well if he didn't fear for the safety of the rest.
He could still taste the rabbit in his mouth, deciding against going off in search of a stream or lake and having to fight to get his spot back. Save your energy for when you claim Kagome...
The young wolf drifted off into a fretful sleep, never noticing the glowing eyes that stared hungrily at the sleeping pack, nor did he hear the crunching of wolf bones as Akumu devoured yet another wolf to replenish his need for blood.

Whew!! Another chapter done and done!! I hope I satisfied those of you who suggested that I not make Akumu too powerful. I tried to correct it without changing the plotline too much. Did I do a good job?
Oh yea, for those of you wondering, no Akumu is not gay. Actually mounting another pack member is the right of the alpha male in a display of who's stronger. It's a domination act that they'll do to any member, be they male or female. So don't freak out. Thank God for the Discovery Channel, eh?? Oh yea...
