Chapter 10

Reason to Believe

 

As Inuyasha walked in the village, many onlookers could tell that this hanyou was not one to piss off for the day. Everyone knew that this hanyou always held a grudge. Inuyasha continued his wallowing gait. Head down, he didn't bother to look up, he knew where he was going just by knowing the scent of Kaede's hut. Pushing aside the cloth that draped over the frame, he entered to the scent of cooking stew.

 

“Inuyasha, I was wondering when you were going to come. I'm guessing dinner is almost done by the smell of it.” Miroku glanced over to the hanyou. Pushing up his sleeves, Miroku started heading out to wash up before dinner. “Don't you want to wash up too, Inuyasha?” He questioned the hanyou.

 

“Feh!” Inuyasha followed behind the monk. Coming across the stream, both of them settled on the bank. An awkward silence was brought upon them. Neither knew what to say.

 

“Inuyasha, what's troubling you so much that you're not talking?” Miroku prodded.

 

“I have a lot on my mind.” He paused. “Hey, monk?”

 

“What?”

 

“You know girls better than me, tell me, do you know what the fuck is going through their mind?” Inuyasha was unsure of what Miroku would reply with.

 

“Inuyasha, women are different, we have no idea what is going on inside their pretty little heads, just as they don't know what's going on in our heads.” And I am thankful for that, or else I'd be getting many slaps from the girls. Miroku added to himself.

 

“Then how are we supposed to know what they want? Kagome keeps going on about what I should know about what she wants me to do, and yet I don't have one freaking clue.” Inuyasha grumbled.

 

“Inuyasha,” Miroku stopped sensing something coming closer.

 

Inuyasha stood to his feet, waiting for the incoming of the tornado. Great, just what I need now. The freaking wolf decides to show.

 

“Where's my woman?” Kouga spoke as the wind settled around him.

 

“When are you going to get it through your head that she ain't going to be your woman? I thought you couldn't walk.” Inuyasha smirked recalling their last battle.

 

“Yeah, well it just took time to recover, now where is my woman?” Kouga persisted.

 

“She's sleeping right now.” Miroku jumped in, not wanting another battle royale on their hands.

 

“At this time of day, no, I'm pretty sure that she's awake.” He caught a whiff of her scent and was off before Inuyasha could pull him back.

 

Inuyasha followed the wolf to Kagome. The sight he was welcomed with was of Kouga holding Kagome's hand and he was not happy with this.

 

“Get your hands off of her, ya mangy wolf.”

 

“What are you going to do, mutt?”

 

Kagome was pulled back into Miroku's chest. Kagome stomped over to the two bickering, and stood in the middle, the two looked at her questioningly.

 

“I've had enough of this. Kouga, I'm not your woman, how many times do I have to say that for it get through your thick skull.” She then looked at Inuyasha. “And you, I've told you plenty of times to not provoke him, but you do it anyway. What's your problem, it's not like you and I are…” She drew away from that matter. Inuyasha drew his eyebrows together in thought about her breaking away.

 

When Kagome finished talking with Kouga, he ran off back to his property.

 

“Woman, you can never make up your mind can you?” Inuyasha bit out.

 

Kagome looked at him, eyes wide. She didn't expect him to… well, she didn't really expect him to say anything, he usually ran off to be by himself, letting Kagome think of what he was doing.

 

“You say I can't make up my mind. Well hope about this… I'm leaving. Good riddance.” Kagome stormed off angrily without thinking, not knowing or caring where she was going. She raced down the woodsy windy path into the dark unknowns of the woods. Tears cascading freely down her cheeks blinding her further, to where she was heading.

 

Suddenly, she tripped over a tree root, and heard a low growl, from the nearby bush, she could see the fierce glowing eyes, and she knew at once that it was a youkai. Before she could let out a terrified scream, Kouga unexpectedly bounded out in front of her. Trying to wipe the tears away from her face, Kagome was still behind the form that had run in front of her. She heard him curse, and wondered where he'd come from.

 

“Damn, that mangy mutt. Can't he do nothing right?” Catching the scent of her tears, he stopped, turned around and looked down at the shaken girl. Looking at her seriously for a moment he asked her, “Are you okay?”

 

For a moment she didn't answer. The concern in his eyes caught her off guard. And she finally, mumbled a bit ashamed, “I'm fine.” As Kagome tried to stand, she felt a sudden sharp pain shot in her right ankle and would have tumbled to the ground, if Kouga hadn't caught her.

 

Inuyasha had been searching for Kagome frantically, where could that baka have gotten to? He brushed aside a branch, as more concerned thoughts clouded his head. How did I lose her scent? He scolded himself. Peering into the darkness, he barreled through the ever thickening wood. He looked down, and noticed the many unearthed tree roots. Idiot girl, knowing her she'd probably already gone and broken her pretty little neck. Keh! Even when I'm mad at her, I still go and think something like that. Inuyasha, you really have gone soft. He told himself. Before, thinking, when I find that girl, I'm going to wring that pretty little neck. Now that's better, Inuyasha. Maybe you haven't gone too soft after all. He chuckled to himself. As sniffed the air again. Finally he was assaulted with her scent. But her scent was accompanied by that stinkin wolf. He sprinted toward them.

 

With Kagome leaning against Kouga's frame for support, she managed to hobble toward the nearest stump.

 

“Trip over your own feet, Kagome?” Inuyasha entered the clearing.

 

“Go away, Inuyasha.” Kagome told him bitterly.

 

Kouga looked on with amusement. He's really done it this time. Now maybe, Kagome'll see the light and come with me. I'd know how to treat her right. He smiled slyly to himself at that last part.

 

“What are you smiling at, wolf?” Inuyasha shot at him coolly. Kouga's smiled broadened a little.

 

“Nothin, just thinking about how much better off Kagome would be with me.” Kouga replied smugly. Once again, Inuyasha returned his attention to Kagome, choosing for once to ignore Kouga. Not an easy feat for him but he needed to set the girl straight.

Inuyasha could hear Kouga snicker behind, That wolf will never let me live this down.

Again, Kouga snickered. Sounds more like a pussy cat than a puppy dog.

And with that, Inuyasha found himself, falling to his knees. Blushing, furiously, as Kouga began laughing so loud, he joined him on the ground, only rolling around.

The song ended, and still blushing, Inuyasha pushed himself up off the ground. Avoiding direct eye contact with Kagome, he suddenly found his bare feet, very interesting. He head still directed to the ground, his eyes dared to look up at her through his bangs and eyelashes. He could see that she was again crying. Now what did I do?

 

“I-I-I-I'm sorry.” He stammered. “I-I'll go away.” He started to leave but Kagome caught his arm.

 

“W-Wait,” she choked out. “I-I don't w-want you to go. I w-want to be with you, Inuyasha.”

 

Kouga stood there slack-jawed. “Ah-h.” The only sound he could make until suddenly….

 

“This will all fall down like everything else that was
This too shall pass and all of the words we said
We cant take back

 

Inuyasha and Kagome both looked over at the wolf, they'd almost completely forgotten that he was even there. Keh! Inuyasha thought with a snicker of his own, now it's my turn to laugh.

Now every fool in town would've left by now

“Kouga, I-I-I-I'm sorry. I-I never…” the girl tried but couldn't finish. She just stood there next to Inuyasha knowing there was nothing she could say. She didn't love him, so she couldn't console him. She was going to be with Inuyasha, as she was going to be with him all along.

Kagome: Will you two stop it!

 

Inuyasha reaches around Kagome, to try and hit Kouga hard on the back of his head. But Kagome catches him before he could commit the act and….
