InuYasha sat with Kagome in the Goshinboku. He was finally fully healed from Kirara. Kagome gasped as he suddenly jumped down from the tree.

“Sesshomaru is coming.” he said.

“This Sesshomaru has arrived.” came a familiar voice.

InuYasha looked at Kagome. “Remember your promise. Go to the village and wait. Do not come back here.”

“But... If you’re injured....” She protested.

InuYasha looked to Sesshomaru. “I know what’s coming to me and I accept it I only ask that you send word to the village after so that she doesn’t have to fear for me yet again.”

“Very well.” Sesshomaru agreed.

Kagome looked at the tai youkai with pleading eyes. “I promised... I promised not to interfere, but please... Will you give your word that I won’t lose him again? I couldn’t bear it.”

“Your mate such that he is will be returned to you alive, on my honor as a youkai.” Sesshomaru replied.

Kagome nodded. “Thank you.” With that she kissed InuYasha once on the mouth and walked away.

The first blow came in the form or green claws glowing with poison clenched into a fist that hit him in the forehead directly between the eyes, rendering him blind. InuYasha stood and waited. He could smell and hear Sesshomaru circling him.

InuYasha grunted and flinched as his brother’s energy whip connected with the side of his face. Being blinded kept him from being able to anticipate and brace for each attack. He lost count of how many times the whip struck his skin stinging him and leaving a warm trail of blood flowing in its wake.

The final lash caused him to cry out in pain as it struck his right ear. InuYasha tried to flick the appendage only to find that he couldn’t move it normally. He reached up and found it hanging to the side, nearly severed. Had it not been for the fist that connected with his jaw, he would have laughed at his first thought having been how upset Kagome was going to be when she saw the damage to his ear.

InuYasha hit the ground hard and it knocked the air from his lungs. He forced himself to his feet and waited. InuYasha didn’t know how long the beating lasted before he finally collapsed unable to much more than drew painful shuddering breaths, the taste of his own blood filling his mouth. He couldn’t see, but he knew that Sesshomaru was standing above him. He couldn’t lift his arms to protest as a foot came to rest on his throat cutting off his air.

Inside his head he laughed at himself for having thought that he would be allowed to live happily with Kagome. His body was useless, so he simply gave over to the darkness. I’m so sorry Kagome. I was wrong, but I won’t leave you. I’ll always be with you watching over you... I love you.

InuYasha opened his eyes and was met with those of his brother. He watched as Sesshomaru returned his sword to its place on his hip. It occurred to him that all the pain he had been feeling was gone.

“Rise.” Sesshomaru commanded.

InuYasha stood and waited for it to begin again but instead Sesshomaru turned to leave. “Oi, wait.” InuYasha called. “That’s it?”

The tai youkai stopped but did not turn. “You are once again worthy to call yourself our father’s son. Know this little brother I will be watching you and there will not be any more chances.”

InuYasha watched Sesshomaru leave before heading back to the village. As soon as the hut was in sight Kagome came running out. She hurried to his side an walked around him touching him, checking for any injury.

“InuYasha, are you hurt?” She asked. “What happened? You were gone so long and I thought... For a minute I felt so cold, and this pain in my chest, like I was dying.”

He held her close. “I tell you inside.”

They sat around the fire and InuYasha told her all about the punishment Sesshomaru inflicted upon him. When he came to the part where Sesshomaru killed him, Kagome gasped and jumped to her feet. InuYasha had to grab her to stop her from leaving the hut.

“Where do you think you’re going wench?” He asked.

“Sesshomaru killed you.” She said. “He gave me his word. I am going to find him and purify him. What if the Tenseiga hadn’t revived you?”

InuYasha didn’t release her and instead he pulled her into a crushing embrace. “If it hadn’t worked then he would be here right now, offering you his life. Besides as badly as I was injured he actually gave me a break. Even I would have needed at least ten days to recover fully. He gave his word that I would be returned to you and I was, and isn’t that what’s important?”

Kagome sighed. “I guess, but I still don’t like that he killed you, even if it was so he could bring you back healed.”

“Hell, his promise or not, I was still surprised he brought me back. I thought for sure he resurrected me to beat the shit out of me a second time.” InuYasha admitted. “Now can I let you go without worrying that you’re going to try and hunt down that bastard?”

Kagome looked up at him with a shy smile. “I don’t know. Maybe you better keep holding me just in case...”

He smirked and lifted her feet from the ground only to sit against the wall with her in his lap. “Sounds good to me.”



The next morning they decided to go see her family knowing that they must be worried after all this time. InuYasha carried Kagome on his back, through the well and out the other side. They walked toward the house together.

Kagome stopped him before he could open the kitchen shoji. “I want to surprise mama, so wait here okay?”

InuYasha nodded and moved to the side to allow her to go inside alone.

Asami turned to find her daughter standing just inside the doorway. Unable to miss the fact that she was not accompanied by the young hanyou. She hurried to her and hugged her tightly. “Welcome home dear. I’ve missed you.”

“I missed you too mama.” Kagome offered quietly. “There is so much I have to tell you...Mama.... It happened.”

“What happened dear?” Her mother asked.

Kagome broke out into a huge smile. “I got my happily ever after.”

“InuYasha...” Asami started.

“Yeah.” The hanyou replied sliding open the door and stepping inside.

Asami looked at her daughter. “This is wonderful. We’ll have a special dinner. We have so much to celebrate. You’ve come home and InuYasha is with you and the end of your quest. I couldn’t have hoped for things to have turned out better.”

“Mama there is one more thing to celebrate as well.” Kagome announced.

“What would that be?” Asami asked.

“How do you feel about being called baa-chan?” Kagome replied.

“But that would mean...” Asami started.

“Kagome’s carrying my pup.” InuYasha offered.

“I am going to be a grandma. Oh this is so exciting.” Asami said clasping her hands. “I must have jii-chan say a prayer to thank the kami for such good fortune and a blessing. Oh there is so much to do. Will it have those adorable ears? I hope so. I can’t wait to rub them. How far along are you dear?”

“I think a doctor would put me at six weeks since that was when I started my last cycle.” Kagome offered.

“Wonderful. So about the ears..” Asami began.

“I don’t know if the baby will have InuYasha’s ears, but we can hope.” Kagome offered.

InuYasha snorted at his mate and her mother. He would never understand why they were so fascinated by his ears. “Crazy human wenches.”

Kagome giggled at her hanyou and reached up to rub one of the furry appendages. “I can’t help it if they’re cute.”

InuYasha blushed and snorted again, but offered no more protest. It didn’t bother him at all that Kagome liked his ears. In fact her mild obsession with touching them was more than a little enjoyable and after she touched them she would never deny him the chance to be with her since she had after all promised to always finish what she started.
