Ambiguity
Sometimes, you don't know what you have until it's gone, don't see what can so obviously be perceived and a certain ambiguity can't be explained…

~Prologue~

“Oof!”
A heavy yellow backpack was heaved over the top of an old, beat-down well and thumped softly onto the ground two feet below it. Closely followed were two hands and a head; and the head belonged to 15-year-old Kagome Higurashi.
“Inuyasha better appreciate all this…” she mumbled. She had been gone longer than she expected, and in an effort to hopefully win over the hanyou's forgiveness, she went to the store quickly and bought him ramen and potato chips.
Pulling herself up and over the well, one of her fingers caught and a good sized slice of wood resulted under her skin, “Ouch!” she exclaimed, sitting down on the edge and coddling her aching appendage. She was just starting to methodically pull out the splinter when she sensed a presence and a shadow fell over her. Looking up slowly, she gasped and jumped a little when she saw Inuyasha's face right in hers.
A clawed hand shot out and grasped a hold of one of hers- the one with the sliver- and prevented her from falling, “A sliver, huh?” he mused, seating himself down next to her, “What have I told you about being careful? Does your brain really work or do you just choose to ignore me?”
Kagome shot him a bored expression, “Honestly, Inuyasha, you treat me like a stupid little kid sometimes,” taking a deep breath to calm her racing heart. She tugged on her hand in effort to make him let go. Instead, his grip tightened, “Let go…” she commanded, slightly breathless. Her pulse fluttered at the prolonged contact. She tugged her hand again; he still didn't release her and gently touched the sliver. She squeaked in pain, startling him into letting go and she immediately stuck her finger in her mouth.
Inuyasha cocked an eyebrow at her, “I'll get it out,” he offered, holding out his hand.
Kagome shook her head, “I'll zoo it myzelf, fanks,” she replied, speaking around her finger. He was being too nice… it freaked her out in a slightly thrilling way…
“And sit here all day? Yeah, right, baka girl, give it here!”
“No!”
Inuyasha pulled her finger out of her mouth and wiped it off on his haori. She tried to pull her hand away, but he held fast and gently pierced the skin over the sliver with a claw.
“AH!”
Kagome pulled her now barely bleeding finger out of his capture and stuck it in her mouth again, “That hurt!” she whined, staring at him. He was holding a single claw up and balanced on that claw as a minuscule piece of wood.
“Got it out,” he gloated with a smirk.
She pouted for a moment, before offering him a small smile in return, “Thanks,” yep, way too nice…
He shrugged, standing and picking up her heavy bag like it was nothing, “Humans can't even take pain when they inflict it themselves, especially you. Was I supposed to sit there and watch you suffer taking out a sliver? We can spend our time doing other things…”
She returned his shrug and got up to follow him as he headed down the path to Kaede's village. They hardly walked for three seconds when the hanyou turned and glared at her.
“Why were you gone so long?” he asked, his tone accusing.
She cocked her head to the side, puzzled by his attitude, “I had to go to school and catch up on my studies…” she explained slowly, “I told you I had end-of-the-year exams coming up. I said I would be gone a few days…”
“A few means three. You were gone five… I was ready to come find you.”
“Then why didn't you if you were so concerned?”
At this, Inuyasha stared at her a few seconds, before turning away, “Feh! I got better things to do than chase you through time.”
Perfect eyebrows disappeared into her black bangs, “OH! So, I suppose that really means that you don't care if I leave for long stretches of time? Because you have better things to do?” she asked. She should have known that his “nice” disposition wasn't going to last long. Didn't make the sting any less hurtful though, “So, you wouldn't… care… if I just… left again…” she turned on her heel and began to walk away, back towards the well.
Experience told her that he wasn't going to let her go again so easily. True to that, he leapt in front of her, barring her path back to the Bone Eater's Well.
“You ain't going back,” he stated, crossing his arms determinedly, “You forget, girl, you have priorities here.”
Kissing the ground might put him in his place…her mind taunted her with the image of Inuyasha face down in the dirt… but she wasn't really angry enough to do that to him. Just a bit irritated and hurt maybe. Besides, she had a good comeback and might be able to talk him into silence… then maybe he would cut his annoying stature.
“I think you forget, dog boy,” she started, “That I have priorities there too! Do you want me to come back?” she asked, placing her hands on her hips.
He regarded her for a second, thinking over her question, “Of course,” he snorted, “Who else is going to help us kill Naraku and get back the shards? And Koga still has two jammed in his furry little legs… only you can get them from him… `cause you won't let me kill him too…”
She sighed, “No, I won't… and do you realize what's going to happen to me in the future if I don't keep my grades up? My teachers are already thinking about sending me to boarding school-“
“Boarding school?”
“-yes, boarding school, because that's where girls go if they can't stay in school and do their work, girls like me!”
“What's boarding school?”
“A school that is very, very far away-“
“What's `very, very far away' to you?”
“Across the country where I have no access to a wrinkle in time and that means no more hunting the shards! So I have to keep my grades up-“
“Feh! I'd come and get you if you couldn't get to the well on you own!”
Kagome paused in her rant, raising her eyebrows again, “Can you? But you have better things to do than come and get me,” she replied softly, in a carefully even tone that suggested that she had just won that argument.
Inuyasha stared at her for a minute, before snorting and striding past her and grabbing up her bag again. Kagome smiled to herself and trotted along after him. She relished in her triumph for a moment or two before pressing him again, just to make her point extra clear.
“Inuyasha, you just need to learn how to be more understanding, that's all,” she said gently.
He didn't look at her when he replied, “I can understand perfectly… and I understand that you ain't going back to your time for at least a couple of weeks.”
She stared at him, mouth open, “But Inuyasha! I have exams next week!” Why did he have to be so stubborn and unreasonable?
“I don't care.”
She stopped walking suddenly, eyes disappearing into the shadows of her bangs. The very air around her seemed to crackle with annoyance and Inuyasha knew immediately that he had said the wrong thing, “Kagome-“
“Osuwari…”
She said it so gently that he hadn't even understood that she had spoken the command before he was down on the ground.
“You need to start caring just a little bit more, Inuyasha, or you might just find yourself alone a lot more often,” she said evenly, before picking up her bag and heading back towards the well.
Inuyasha was just peeling himself off the ground, mumbling about stupid girls and volatile tempers, all intent to catch her before she went through the well and let her have a piece of his mind, but it was too late. The trees of his forest whispered in melancholy…
She was gone.

This is a variation of my old story, Secrets of the Past, but this time, I'm writing them in order and changing the stories themselves all around so they have a better twist. I would like to dedicate this to my friend Sierra, who helped me with SOTP, thus driving me to create this masterpiece and I would like to dedicate this to Sueric and all her betas and loyal fans. Those who have read her stories know what I mean when I say she is a great writer and I thank her for posting her works. Someday I hope she reads and enjoys my stories as much as I read and enjoy hers. She is my inspiration to write again and surely that to others too and for her inspiration, I thank her. ~Jesachi
