Chapter 6: Keep Dreaming
Drawing never dies, it holds on by the skin of its teeth, because the hunger it satisfies… the desire for an active, investigative, manually vivid relation with the things we see and yearn to know about…is apparently immortal.
~Robert Hughes
He couldn't believe this…he had fifteen minutes to get to a thirty-minute-away restaurant for his breakfast meeting with the most beautiful woman in the world - and he couldn't leave because he couldn't agree with himself on what color shirt he should wear.
“Pull yourself together, man!” He growled, looking back and forth between a cobalt blue tee-shirt and a button down with dark green stripes.
He rolled his eyes before throwing both on his now clothing-covered futon and quickly rummaged through his closet yet again.
So…today was the day…and of course that'd be the case he thought because no sooner did he decide on a black and white printed tee then he realized the pants he wanted to wear with it were stained with paint.
At that point he wanted to tear everything he owned into pieces, say the hell with it, and go in his boxers and undershirt..
Putting one hand over his face, he sighed deeply, dumping the rejected items into his laundry basket as he dragged on a pair of faded blue jeans from under the amassing pile of fabric. His shirt was the next thing to come on as he simultaneously grabbed his wallet and rushed out the door, closing it with a loud click behind him.
Seconds later, a growl was heard from outside the door as he unlocked it and rushed back in, glancing around in irritation for his coat…and not finding it.
He cursed.
*****
For what had to have been the third time she checked her watch, frowning at it as if it was all the tiny piece of metal's fault her partner was still absent. Mikadzuki-san was nearly forty minutes late and she had to be at work in an hour for the first shift…
She sighed, taking her eyes away from it and ordered another coffee for herself.
She sighed again, smiling politely at the waitress as she placed her coffee before her and left to take orders for another table. Kagome looked past her to the door hoping her new acquaintance would come through the door any second now - but he didn't.
Looking back down at her coffee, she sipped it, letting the smooth taste of French Vanilla slide around within the interior of her mouth.
So his name was Sesshomaru…she thought idly, allowing her mind to trail off as she watched life flow by outside the painted glass window beside her.
She always chose window seats…they were just better for some reason.
`Oh just stop it…you chose a window seat because you wanted to catch a peek of this new guy before he rounds the corner to the door…' A little voice in her head said cheekily, making her blush. Ducking her head she took another sip of coffee.
`I know the rules ok…jeez, I can't believe I'm arguing with myself over this…'
Outside, she saw a group of high school kids making their way to school. Some wore different uniforms than others, showing that they went to different schools. She watched them walk past the window, both parties stopping at the crosswalk and noticed with interest that one pair were holding hands with one another. Their uniforms didn't match which was probably why they were beginning to take different routes. As the light turned green for them to go, she watched as the girl shyly kissed the boy beside her and than headed off across the road with her friends, blushing madly as the boys continued on down the sidewalk in the opposite direction.
She smiled slightly, blushing despite herself.
It was all so innocent. She only wished her own days of innocence were still intact like that pair of those high school students. She glanced at her watch once more. Now Mikadzuki-san was almost an hour late. She shook her head in disappointment. Taking a few bills from her wallet, she put them under her nearly empty coffee container and got up to leave.
“Amefuri-san.”
She paused, turning at the sound of a familiar voice, and finding it to be her awaited breakfast partner walking through the door towards her, his movements so graceful she couldn't help but watch them in amazement.
As he reached the table she watched him bow deeply in apology before straightening up to meet her eyes.
“I apologize for my absence - it was very rude of me to-”
“Do you dance?” She asked quietly, her off-the-cuff words catching him off guard.
He paused, momentarily lost for words before he caught himself and responded back.
“Seven years of ballroom - may I ask how you knew?”
She smiled prettily and blushed, looking away from him in embarrassment.
“It…it just shows in the way you move, that's all…”
He found himself unable to think of a single thing to say in return.
“I can pay for your…” He glanced at the table and wanted to hit something as he caught sight of three empty Styrofoam cups all clustered together.
“Coffees…?” She asked with a laugh, watching his face as he looked away from the table, back at her.
“Gomen nasai. It appears that today I am the one who is apologizing quite profusely.” He said with a smile, watching her as she laughed again, gently placing a hand on his arm and pulling on it.
“We might not be able to have breakfast, but I have forty-five minutes `till my shift starts. Would you like to take a walk with me until then?”
“It's very cold outside-” He said before he could stop himself, watching as she tilted her head to the side grinning up at him.
“So you're a wimp, is that what your saying?”
At his blank look she shook her head, taking a step back to explain.
“You said it's cold outside…you can't take walking outside for a while in the cold?”
She watched as apprehension dawned on his features and for some reason found it charming.
`There's nothing charming about it…it's just stupid.' The little voice in her head said with a sniff.
`Oh shut up.' She thought back and smiled as a look of relief flashed across his face and through his eyes.
She suddenly realized that her head didn't even come up to his shoulder. He was so much bigger than she was…and yet she didn't feel in the least bit intimidated by it. Actually, it made her feel safer…and that made her feel strange inside - like she was somehow betraying Inuyasha by thinking such a thing.
“How tall are you anyways?” She asked inquisitively, since she almost had to crane her head up to look fully into his face.
“Much taller than you.”
The words came out before he could stop them and he wanted to punch himself in the face for how stupid they sounded.
But to his surprise she laughed instead of giving him a look of disgust.
“Oh well…tall boys make better boyfriends as my best friend Sango always says!”
She said the words teasingly, but a pang of possessiveness raced through him at the image her statement presented. He shook it away with a violent oath.
“I'm six eight.” He said quietly as they started from the restaurant into the frosty air outside. She looked up into his face again and nodded.
“Yeah…that seems about right since I'm only five five.”
“Is your…” He had to fight for his next words to come out detached.
“…boyfriend, tall?”
Something flashed across her face but it was too quick for him to catch.
“He's…well, he's taller than me.” She said, deliberately dancing away from the details.
“But not by much it seems.”
She sighed.
“I apologize. I appear to have offended you with my prodding.”
“What? Oh! Oh no - no, it's not that…I just can't believe we're talking about this-”
“Than allow me to change the subject.” He said smoothly, pleasantly nodding his head down at her in apology.
She stole a glance at his profile and had to look away again as he glanced at her from the corner of his eye.
They walked for a few minutes in silence, enjoying the simplicity of each others company.
“I miss the sight of the cherry blossoms in season.” He said it offhandedly, and Kagome got the impression that he hadn't meant to say the words out loud.
“I agree. They're beautiful…” She agreed, digging her hands deeper into her pockets.
He had been right - it was cold outside.
“I love to-” He cut himself off and surprised, she looked up at him, unsure of why he'd stopped mid-sentence.
“What? You love to what?”
He shook his head, trying to change the subject, but she refused to let it go so easily. For a moment, she thought she saw amusement glide across his handsome face before it was gone.
“You would think to laugh at me for it should I tell you.”
She stopped, hands going to her hips in mock indignation.
“Would not!”
He surprised her by tilting back his head and laughing - and in that instant, she realized that she had never heard such a deep, vibrant sound before. Despite herself, she wanted to make him laugh again, even though she knew with every fiber of her being that she shouldn't. The sound seemed to fill her - stretching out until every corner of her body felt warm and carefree.
“What's so funny?” She asked surprised, her hands falling away from her hips.
He smiled - a true smile - and it made a part of her melt like an icicle in April.
“You are very amusing Ms. Amefuri.”
God - she loved it when he said her name like that - the way it just rolled from his lips like marbles across glass…although she inwardly wished that he could instead just call her-
`Oh don't you dare! Inuyasha is your boyfriend - not this jamoke!' Her mind said firmly making her look away from him to the ground.
“Oh look - here we are.”
They'd arrived in front of her work and now were just standing idly, looking about.
“You are a Veterinarian?” He asked her with interest, looking from her to her office again.
She nodded, wiping a piece of hair behind her ear in a nervous gesture.
“Well…I'm more of an intern than anything else…I'm working to get the money for my full degree.”
He nodded.
“Than you must be very smart, Ms. Amefuri.”
She blushed, inwardly kicking herself for being such an airhead about a simple well-meant compliment.
`Well-meant alright.' Her mind whispered sarcastically.
“I'm just an average girl who likes animals-thus the dogs.” She said humorously, looking back up at him with a smile.
A smile played on the corner of his lips and for the briefest of instants she thought he was going to kiss her.
“I - I have to go now. My shift starts in ten minutes.” She said, turning away from him abruptly before she allowed either of them to do something stupid.
The look he gave her next was one of contemplation.
“You asked me if I danced and I told you I did.” He said simply, a gust of wind picking up his long black hair and waving it like a banner around his shoulders. Stopping despite herself, she watched it with something akin to amazement. Besides him, the only other man she knew with long hair was Inuyasha. It was strange but that was one of her weaknesses, long hair that was. She wasn't sure why exactly. It was just one of those things she supposed.
She gave him a confused look.
“Yeah, so?”
“There's an exclusive center in Tokyo that teaches ballroom dancing. Would you care to accompany me as my dance partner?”
Everything within her screamed for her to say no. To just say no and walk away - maybe even throw in a mean word or two so he'd back off - but for some reason her mouth decided to throw all caution to the wind instead.
“I…I can't ballroom dance…” She said, but it was a feeble argument and they both knew it. The truth was that she loved to dance. While Sesshomaru might have taken seven years of ballroom, she had taken the same in ballet and jazz. She'd never learned ballroom though, and the thought of doing so thrilled her beyond measure. Never mind the thought of it meaning she'd be pressed into this mans body - his arms around her, his fluid movements directing her every motion-
“I-I really do have to go now.” She stuttered, turning on her heel and hurrying to the pair of double doors that awaited her.
“I'll pick you up at your apartment next Saturday at six pm then?” He calmly called after her. She paused in the doorway, looking over her shoulder at him and after a brief pause in which she simply looked at him, she gave a simple nod and immediately escaped inside.
*****
“It's Wednesday…I hate Wednesday's…” Koga said sourly, pacing back and forth past a row of woodblock carvings set out for display. He stopped and glared at one of a geisha playing the shamisen for a few of her guests and snorted, twisting away and beginning to pace back and forth once more.
“Hungry like the wolf, are we?” Kagura asked freshly as she unlocked her office door located some feet away and headed in. Thankful at something else to do besides continue waiting for another shipment of artwork, it was all Koga could do to keep himself from bounding into her office.
“I'm just sick of doing nothing that's all.” He said flippantly back.
Kagura sent him a look of false sympathy.
“Go clean the toilets or something if you're bored.” She said, pulling open a drawer from her desk and carefully picking out a letterhead and pen.
“Alright fine. I know that `someone' out there wants to be with me.” He growled, stalking out of her office.
Kagura couldn't help but imagine a long bushy tail all bristled out and the image made her laugh out loud despite herself.
`Ah…another day at the office.' She thought with a grin.
