I do not own the characters of Inuyasha, nor do I gain any profits from it. I just love the characters and want to use them for my stories

“So, she is a half-demon” the old man mumbled to himself in sadness. She looked human, so human that he never would have questioned her. He then grew upset, not because of her being one, but of what would happen if she were found out. He knew of the horrors his fellow villagers were capable of. Death would be too easy, and it sure they all ended up dead, it just was a very slow process before they ended up that way.

He could tell she had a bad life with her demeanor and nervousness when around other people. In the beginning of meeting her, she didn’t even talk. He thought her mute until he asked her. He was fine with her not talking. He figured he could give her space and she will open up and speak when she needed to. After the first month however he grew concerned. He actually chuckled at the thought of it. He remembered praying that she would talk, thinking that she needed to express herself. “What a joke.” He muttered now missing the peace and quiet. Oh yeah, She can talk alright, she can out talk anyone he knew.
*
He never asked her anything about her past. He could only imagine what trauma she had to deal with. It seemed like she preferred it that way. All he knew was that she was alone, and to him that is all that mattered to him. “Now what should I do with this girl.” He debated to himself now full of worry and sadness. She had been careless, and she of all people should know what happens to people who are careless.
*
He stumbled across the girl six moons ago. Twice a month he would go to neighboring towns to sell and trade. He would either have his produce, or he would have other items his neighbors would give him. While driving his cart home, he saw a form lying on the dirt road. Getting off the merchant cart, he cautiously walked over. Before him was a young girl who was bleeding unconscious. Her form was frail, so fragile looking that he knew without a doubt she would die of hunger. Without a word he took her in, and saved her from that death and gave her an opportunity to live with him in a small farming village. He knew she was a blessing in disguise. She is a fine worker, and had basically single handedly saved his farm.
*
There were telltale signs that he should have guessed that she was a half breed. The head covering that she wore on her head at first glance didn’t mean anything. Many young women wore them, especially if they were doing outdoor work. But she wore it inside as well. He even saw her with it on once while she was sleeping.
*
There was also her heightened senses; of both hearing and smell. She always knew when a visitor came before they knocked on the door. Or when the livestock was in trouble or of what was being cooked in a distance. All the while he never questioned it. He had no reason to question anything; he was the only one she talked to.
*
Then there was the village Miko. Every the priestess could approach his home, the girl would go the other direction hiding, as if she were deathly afraid of her. Yet the priestess never said anything, nor made any attempts to talk to her. All the while he never questioned it.
*

And of course there was her strength and endurance. He had her work from dawn to dusk every day, not of his choosing but hers. She never complained. Not once about the work, or anything for that matter. She was very strong and fast with her work, even helped with lifting of the bags of grain and rice. It was now harvest time, and he had more than enough profits for the work, and enough food stored for the two of them for the winter ahead.
*
He continued watching the young woman bath, not once having an impure thought in his head. The hanyou that he was observing was quite beautiful. She had long black hair that was somewhat unruly with its thickness and waves. She had a small frame, so with clothing she appeared to be 12-14 years of age. While that is a good age to marry, it was still much too young to be without a protector or family. Without clothing however, was another story. Her firm formed breasts and the curve of her hips proved to him that she was indeed much older. A woman. “So she binds herself to make us believe she was a young orphan. Pretty smart.” He thought. On the top of her head were two furry ears twitching franticly while she was washing her hair. “I am too old for this.” He thought out loud knowing no one could hear him. He then walked away slowly and quietly, allowing the girl to continue to bath in privacy.

She knew something was wrong from the moment she walked into her home. The farmer was quietly stirring stew when she came in. He looked up and greeted her with a sad smile. Knowing it was bad news she asked. “What’s wrong Uncle?” He allowed her to call her uncle since she didn’t have family. He knew he seemed old enough to be her grandfather, but the idea of being called such just didn’t sit well with him.
*

“You are a Hanyou , aren’t you girl.” He said not asking a question while grabbing a bowl and filling it with food for himself. Her eyes widened at his statement and she bit her lip trying to figure out what to do.
*
“Calm yourself Kagome, I am not upset about that, nor do I personally care. However, this village does, and I don’t want any harm to come to you so you need to be more careful when you bath. Do you understand me?” he spoke sternly handing her a bowl full. She nodded looking at her meal.
*
“Good, now eat up, you deserved it. On your cot, I have some money for you. I have to say this was indeed the best harvest I had in years. I have to give you some of it. Now I have enough to get more help. What do you say Kagome, I hire two hands and you can do inside work. How does that sound?”
*
She swallowed a deep lump in her throat. “I don’t mind working Uncle. In fact I enjoy it a lot.” She said trying not to cry.
*
“I know that, but you should be worried about finding love and security…” He started
*
“Uncle, I am a Hanyou, I don’t have that kind of future. I’m happy here with you.” She said hopefull.
He shook his head In disbelieve. “You know the young men who have been making visits young one. Surely you don’t think they came to visit me? Soon they will make offers for you and then what will you do?”
“I will not have that at all I will never fall in love. I am not even supposed to be alive at all.” She bitterly said. The man just huffed and continued to eat and chatter about their future. The future that she would not allow to happen.
*
The next morning, the farmer woke up to a note written to him. He knew she was gone. Opening the letter up it read:
***
Uncle,
Thank you for letting me stay with you these last few months. You saved me in more ways than one. I am leaving and I hope that your farm continues to prosper. You knew what would happen to me if I were found out, and you protected me from that. I now have to do the same to you. I know that you too would have shared the same fate for letting me live with you. Thank you again for all your kindness.
Kagome
***
The farmer took the note and tore it to shreds. He sighed to himself and looked outside at his village. “I guess it was for the best.” He said as he walked out his home and began to work. His only regret he had was that was not able to say good bye.
