Chapter Six:
Restless

"You sounded like a wreck on the phone. What happened? Traffic was a bitch so I parked the car in the middle of nowhere and ran, now I’m walking like duck." Ayame complained. She sighed and sat in a chair in front of her sister's desk.

"Promise not to freak out?"

"There's no good news when anyone says that. I remember the last time Jubilee used that . . . mommy came home from work and before Jubilee could tell me what she did mom slapped me around with a news paper asking why I brought a boy into the house." She ran her fingers through her hair. "Alright, now tell me?"

"How'd you get out of work?"

"I yelled
'fire' and while everyone was freaking out and wondering where it was, I ran out. Stop changing subjects and tell me what you couldn't tell me over the phone."

" . . . They found a lump in my breast. It's still stage one--"

"Whoa, Sakura . . . tell me we're talking about a three-sum and not . . . cancer." Ayame waited for a joke, a punch line, anything. But she didn't get what she wanted. "Sa--mom died from that! How can you just be so . . . calm?"

"What do you want me to do? You want me to throw things around, act all angry, stop everything for something little."

"Little? You could die!"

"Stop saying that . . . I won't. I'll beat it, just because it's genetic, doesn't mean I can't fight back."

Ayame covered her ears with her hands and shook her head. "Does Jubilee know?"

"Not . . . yet, and don't you blab either. It's my thing, it me who will do the talking." Sakura sighed and lay back in her big chair. "I'm only telling you because you need to know. I know you Ayame; you wouldn't tell Jubilee knowing it would break her. Just, keep it to yourself for now, I'll tell her when the time is right."

Ayame nodded in agreement, trying to keep her sanity.

"I told you not to freak out."

"I can't help it." Ayame sighed, rubbing her temples.

"I knew I'd ruin your day--"

"No! I wanted to know . . . I needed to know."

"Go back to work. By now, I’m sure everyone noticed there isn't really a fire. And please, don't tell Jubilee.

"Ookami, wake up from little Ayame land and at least make it look like your working. I don't even know why I keep you around" Sukie complained as she whacked Ayame with a local newspaper. "The catering company canceled last minute claiming they had scheduled another event ahead of time so it's up to you to find a better one, i think I left their manager def." She threw a sheet of paper on the desk in front of her. "Those are some numbers see what you can do. Even if it takes three companies. Call, the event is tonight and it's one of my best clients."

"Wait . . .” Ayame browsed the little titles at the top. "Your doing Kouga's father's even tonight? I'm . . . supposed to be there tonight. I can't do this in hours."

"Excuse me,"

"I mean . . . this event; I'm supposed to be there. I'm more obligated to be there against my will. I can't host it and be a guest all at once. It'll be a disaster."

"You best pray on Buddha girl, because there's no way your getting out of this one, next time pay attention to addressess." Sukie rushed out the office to go hassle the secretary.

"But I'm half Catholic!" She yelled out the door. Sukie was to busy to even listen. Ayame hit her head on the desk. 'Great, I have a party to plan . . . And I'm invited. I'll just have to switch shifts or something.'

"The desk can leave prints on your face."

Ayame's head immediately rose from the desk. She picked a small Post-it off. "What are you doing here?" She asked Kouga. "I mean . . . I wasn't expecting anyone."

"Here," Kouga held up a small ring keychain with a single key.

"What is it?"

"A lollypop, what does it look like?"

"I meant why are you giving me keys?" She suddenly gasped. "Oh my gosh, are they to the Sea-Side Castle?"

"The what? Why do you cal it that?"

"Uh . . . hello, because it is. The house is almost three acres it's self. It could have its own little villages inside." She walked over and snatched the key, observing the shiny metal like diamonds on a necklace. "So how come I have the great honor of getting a key to the legendary Sea-Side Castle." She teased, setting the keys on her desk, sitting on the edge of it.

"Well, seeing as the door bell's a little hard to hear when your away from the main door way. Since you’re helping Yumi with her piano skills, Dad made you a copy."

"Ayame, for cripes sake, if I have to scold you one more time I’ll have your job young lady!" Sukie scolded from afar. She rushed toward her.

"My fault," Kouga interrupted.

Sukie turned around to face the young man. "Whoa, you two are married? No wonder it sounded familiar. I just thought it was a coincidence. Ayame, why didn't you tell me you were married to the Ookami Kouga?"

" . . . I didn't think you cared."

"Yeah, well, I guess your right. Keep about your business then, but if I find out there are no caterers, it's your job."

.xXx.

"Guess who," Taunted a small girl, placing her hands gently over Minoru's eyes. The top of her head reached Minoru's chin. She had long dark hair and mesmerizing, grey eyes. She giggled as she took her perfectly manicure hands off his eyes, giving him a chance to turn around.

"Manny,"

Tanma Mirabel. She was Minoru's old childhood friend. They had even lost their virginity to each other in the eighth grade. After that, she skipped college and went straight for modeling. She made plenty of money and was beautiful. Her mother was Brazilian and Puerto Rican-- which was where her Hispanic name came from--however, her father was all Japanese. He was the CEO of a large corporation. He gave her the nick name Manny when she was five, he complained how it was difficult to keep saying 'Mirabel'. "I'm glad you got my message." She sat down across from him at the small glass table of the latest restaurant, 49, 49. "I guess your wondering why it's been so long, right. Daddy finally made stop modeling. And now I have too much time on my hands. So why not visit my best friend Minoru."

He smirked. "You look good."

"Thanks, so do you. You haven't changed a bit, and yet you changed so much. Daddy told me your studying to become a surgeon. I knew you were gonna be a genius."

"I wouldn't go so far. But I am studying to become a surgeon. So what's the famous Tanma Mirabel up to on her free time?"

"Enjoying the party life and all the red carpets, as long as I don't show too much leg," She teased. She picked up her glass of white wine. "So . . . . Let’s see where the night takes us wolf boy."

Minoru smirked and picked up his vibrating cell phone. He ignored the call which was from Jubilee, pressing the little red button.

"Who was it?" Manny asked interested. "Got some girl friend your trying to keep behind closed door?"

"No one special," He replied, nonchalant.

"Sure. You're telling me, that one of the richest bachelors in the world has yet to find a nice little girl to make him complete?"

"If that's how you want to look at it."

Manny smiled at him. "I feel like I'm being pulled into a trap." She commented. "What do you say you show me the real Tokyo? It's been so many years since I've been here. I'm so used to Russia. I got lost on the way to your father's. But it wasn't really hard to miss." She tilted her head to the side and glanced at Minoru curiously, as he couldn't stop eyeing her. "Trying to see through my dress, or what?"

Minoru chuckled and shook his head. "You just look a lot more different."

She giggled and took his glass of wine. She put the fine glass to her lips and looked at her wrist for the time. Swallowed down the remains quickly. "We better get going, your dad told me about the business event he's having tonight. It's better to be late than not there at all."

.xXx.

Ayame picked up a piece kimbap--cabbage wrapped rice--using her chopsticks as tongs. "What is this?" She complained.

"Kimbap," Answered the waiter. "It's a nice, simple, and traditional Korean dish."

"Yes well, this is Japan, and as much as our food is alike, this is made totally wrong. It looks like someone ate it for us." She grabbed him by the shoulders and turned him around toward the kitchen doors. "Get in there and tell the chef to make it look more decent. We're paying you double, and don't you forget it." Ayame sighed. She wasn't used to being so mean, but today had been one of her worst days. She walked over to the nearby table and sat between Kouga and Sukie.

"Nope, I never really thought about it." Kouga's voice came into one of the many conversations going around the room.

Ayame turned her attention toward the front door, where Minoru had entered with Manny. Her brows furrowed in curiosity and confusion. 'I'm either blind, or that's really not Jubilee. I don't get it.'

"Oh, Manny, I'm glad you could come, and you managed drag Minoru along." Keiji teased.

Manny wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him. "It's been so long Keiji!" She took a seat and immediately picked into a plate of food.

Ayame felt an elbow at her side. "Ow," She whispered.

"Go check on the rest of the dishes. The chef better have them out in twenty minutes or he gets nothing." Sukie argued a little higher than a whisper.

Ayame nodded and got up. She pushed open the kitchen door, pulling a cigarette and lighter out of her hand bag and tucking the small bag under her arm. She walked toward the back entrance and exited the building, disobeying Sukie.

She needed a break. Since Kouga came to her office, she hadn't had a single break, she had been on the phone all day, trying to book a last minute caterer and then planning the rest of the party, while Sukie took credit.

She lit her cigarette and inhaled the toxins deeply, blowing out a huge puff of white. The sun was already setting, quickly hiding behind buildings. She looked at the end of the cigarette, the cherry, burning like the sun it's self. She stubbed it out on the side of the building and looked around, spotting a little girl at the corner of the street holding a small box of Laffy Taffy with a frown.

Ayame walked over to the little girl and tapped her on the shoulder. "Hey kid, if I buy that whole box, will you go home early?" She asked.

The little girl's face lit up with smile as she nodded.

She pulled a wad of money out of her bag, more than enough, and handed it to the girl.

The little girl smiled at her as she pushed the box toward Ayame. "Thank you ma'am, now my family will be so happy!" She skipped off, rushing toward her home.

"Just when I think you're as cold as ice, you get a little warmer." Kouga taunted from behind.

"Huh," Ayame flipped around, almost giving herself whiplash. "What's that supposed to mean . . . wait, aren't you supposed to be inside?"

"Aren't you supposed to be screaming out orders?" He countered.

She shrugged, shifting the box of Laffy Taffy to the other arm. "I'm tired of yelling. All I've done is yelled." She held out the box of treats to him, offering him some. "I heard they taste pretty descent."

"You bought something without tasting first?"

"Well . . . she wasn't gonna go home before the sun went down, even if I did give her extra money." Ayame sighed and shrugged. "I could always leave them at the front desk. Someone's bound to steal them. Wait . . . how'd you get away from Sukie? She likes you so much. I'm surprised she hasn't proposed."

"Jealous," He joked.

Ayame rolled her eyes, "Well, now I can say, 'I got there first'." She countered. She shuffled her feet, staring at the ground. A small silence lifted.

"I actually had to jump out the bathroom window." He admitted.

She lifted a brow. "You used to sneaking out windows or something?" Ayame got on her tip toes, looking behind Kouga at the tiny men's washroom window. "I'm surprised you fit."

"Well I didn't the title of man-whore staying home all night--"

"Ayame, break was an hour ago. And I don't wanna here you got lost; Ramie used that one thirty minutes ago." Sukie snapped.

"My fault again," Kouga covered for her, "I thought I saw something and made her come out to see."

Sukie nodded to herself, knowing it was mostly likely a cover-up. She waved Ayame over, and being as obedient as a lap dog, Ayame followed. "You're finished." Sukie said as she followed Ayame into the building.

Ayame gasped. "I'm fired? But . . . it wasn't even my fault. Just one more chance and I'll--"

"What are you talking about kid? I mean you were done for the rest of the day. You're actually more of a hard working than any other of these jack asses."

.xXx.

"Gin Martini,"

"So how’s the baby thing going." Asked a random person around the table.

Ayame grabbed the waiter's arm. "Make that vodka . . . more vodka than anything."

"Fine," Kouga lied, nonchalant. "Someone's just a little cranky lately."

Ayame's head snapped to look at him. "Do you want me to use the excuse that you stabbed yourself with my fork?" She hissed, taking down her sixth glass of a Martini. She was now a little wasted and hyper.

Kouga drank the rest of his whine.

Ayame hadn't noticed when he bid his farewells. She only felt him pull her up from the chair and suddenly realized she was outside. Ayame gasped. "Who turned out the lights?" She began walking to the nearest orb of light, which just so happened to be a near by sign. She was pulled back by Kouga. "Where are we going? I wanna see the lights!" She argued like a baby.

"Stop whining, you're gonna convince strangers you're three."

"Where are we going, everything's . . . blending." Suddenly Ayame felt her self run head first into some kind of hard wall. "Fuck! You're supposed to be looking out for me, not dragging me into walls!

Kouga shook his head. "You can't even walk straight, how are we convincing our families we're trying?"
