Chapter Three: Something's Not Quite Right

Kagome and Inuyasha stood outside the front of her school. "Let's go," said Inuyasha, walking towards that school. Kagome grabbed his arm.

"I don't think we can get it," she said. "It's late and school's out for summer."

"Keh, I can get us in!" Inuyasha ran up to the door. Unexpectedly, he felt himself being pulled to the ground. "Ow!" he cried out as his face met the concrete steps. "Idiot, what was that for!?"

"Don't destroy my school!" said Kagome, running up to him. "Who do you think'll pay for the damages! And someone could be watching us! We could go to jail for that!"

"Jail? What the hell is that?"

"Nevermind."

That strange look came across Inuyasha's face. He sniffed the air. Something's not right. Without a word, he flew off to the right.

"Inuyasha!" Kagome called after him. He ignored her, picking up speed. Inuyasha soon found himself surrounding by trees. He sniffed the air again. Dammit! I'm losing it.

Inuyasha first picked up the scent on the bus. It had been very faint, and he hadn't been sure it was a hanyou. After all, how was it possible for there to be anything like that in Kagome's time? So he ignored it. But now, there was no mistaking it. The faint scent had returned. I shouldn't have let Kagome talk me outta bring Tet'saiga.

Inuyasha sniffed the air again. As quickly as it had come, the odd scent was gone. Dammit, where'd it go!?

"Inuyahsha!" Kagome came up behind him, breathing hard. "What happened? Do you sense something?"

Inuyasha looked around. "Something's here," he said. "Whatever it is, it's not strong. I keep losing the smell of it." Inuyasha tried to pick up the scent again to no avail. "Shit, it's not anywhere! I'm staying here tonight. I'm sure whatever it is will come back. You can go back home."

"No!" Kagome blurted out. "I-I mean, if you stay, I'll stay too. I can go home and get the Tetsusaiga and a sleeping bag, and I'll be back."

Inuyasha looked at Kagome. Though she had a look of detemination on her face, he could see she was a little tired. They were supposed to be taking a break from fighting. "Let's just go," he said. "Whatever that thing is probably isn't strong enough to be trouble anyway."

"Let's go eat," suggested Kagome. "We'll come back to the school tomorrow."

"Yeah, alright," said Inuyasha. They turned to leave.

Only seventy feet away, there was an odd tree. The tree was normally covered in wards. But now one was missing.
