Chapter Four: Breaking Out

Dorobou stared at the dim light just above his head. It was the only thing he could seen in the darkness that surrounded him. He clenched his teeth as he tried to sit up. His arms shook violently as struggled to reach the full sitting position. Finally, they gave out, causing Dorobou to fall back into the position he'd been laying in.

Dorobou didn't know how long he'd been asleep. The last thing he remembered was fighting the pretty-haired hanyou and a miko. The arrow the miko had shot at him pierced his body, releasing most of the power he'd gotten from other hanyou. This severely weakened him, and he fell asleep.

It was the dim light that woke up Dorobou. It was too long ago when it shone down on his face like a dying sun. It was after the light appeared when he could move his weaken body. Too much effort had made him blackout several times before. Each time he woke up more frustrated at his diminished power.

Dorobou tried to sit up again. His struggle this time lasted longer. He'd managed to make it into a sitting position. He looked above his head. The dim light was so close. Dorobou lifted a shaky arm up to the light. Dammit! His arm fell lifelessly as Dorobou blacked out again.

"That silly girl," Ayumi said as she squeezed Touki's arm. "I didn't think she would do it!"

Touki shrugged. "I've gotta admire her for that," he said. "But why's that Rina girl so desperate to be your friend anyway? She doesn't seem like the type to hang around with you and Sari and Momo."

Ayumi laughed. "Everyone wants to be like us!" she said, she pressed her body closer to Touki. "She only wants to hang out with us so she can get to you. But you belong to me." Ayumi stood on tip-toe to plant a wet kiss on her boyfriend's cheek.

Ayumi and Touki had been dating for three months. They decided to keep it a secret because they didn't want to be bothered by other students; not even Ayumi's closest friends knew. Ayumi and Touki met in the evenings in the woods by the school. From there they would sneak off to other places.

Ayumi glanced up at the sealed tree as they walked by. She stopped. "Something wrong?" asked Touki.

"I don't get what's to deep about this thing," said Ayumi, "It's just a tree."

"Supposedly, there's some kind of monster in there," said Touki. "That's why there's no grass around it."

"People are too damn supersititious," Ayumi said with a laughed. Her expensive black loafers crunched on grass as she made her way to the tree's blockade. "Watch this."

Ayumi stepped across the blockage. "See, nothing happened to me."

"Someone could be watching you Ayu," said Touki, moving a little closer to the tree.

"Rina didn't get in any trouble," said Ayumi. "Geez, there's nothing here! The only that's keeping people away from this old thing is the dumb ghost story about it. I bet there people who come take these things off all the time! Someone'll come and replace them. Besides, I wanna get one of those wards as a little keepsake from our date. It'll be another secret between us. We probably won't be together after high school anyway."

Touki raised an eyebrow. What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Ayumi pulled a ward off the tree. There had been another one stuck to the bottom of it. Ayumi shrugged. Two wouldn't make a difference. She peeled them apart, handing one to Touki. "Don't ever say I never gave you anything!"

Touki laughed. He put the crumbled, worn ward close to his heart. "I'll treasure it forever!" he said, extending his left arm to the sky for a more melodramatic affect.

"You're so silly!" Ayumi exclaimed as she stepped back over the blockade. "I'm hungry. Let's go get something to eat."

Three hours later, a translucent hand emerged from the tree.
