Prologue: Baby at Sixteen

Kanaka Higurashi had just made a very hard decision. Almost a year ago at age fifteen she lost her virginity to her best guy friend in a moment of passion. Unfortunately they didn't use protection and Kanaka found herself pregnant and alone when the boy's parents moved taking him with them. Whatever happened Kanaka would never consider abortion as an option, to her that was just like murdering a child who had just as much a right to live as she herself did.
Kanaka was normally a very well behaved child. She was smart, fairly pretty, and the pride and joy of her parents. Unfortunately her parents did not see the coming of this child as a blessing, they saw it as a curse. “Get rid of the child Kanaka,” they told her. “You are a brilliant young lady. Having a child will only mess up your life. You have such great potential; don't throw it all away.” Soon Kanaka caved under the pressure and she decided to put the baby up for adoption.
Too often had Kanaka seen movies where children who were adopted felt resentment and anger toward their biological parents for giving them up. Kanaka did not want this to be so with her child. And so six months into her pregnancy she sat down to pen a letter to her future daughter, Kagome.

My dearest Kagome, (she started.)

I will not call you daughter because surely some other lucky person has the privilege of doing that. I am writing you this letter for what I suppose is a selfish reason. I have never, to my knowledge, been hated or resented by anyone and I would not like you to be the first person to have such feelings toward me. At the moment I am writing this letter, I am sixteen and alone. For the man who is your birth father has left me, though not by choice.
This letter is to be given to you upon your sixteenth birthday. It is my hope that up until now you have led a wonderful, peaceful, happy life and that you do not blame me for giving you up. I ask you to please look into your heart and decide what you might do if you were in my position. I know your decision will be as a result of the life you have lived thus far. I fully and truly believe that your life could be so much better than the one you would have with me as a teenage mother.
I researched the adoption agency I'm giving you to too the fullest extent. I had to be sure that when you were adopted it would be by someone who would love and cherish you; an opportunity that I envy greatly. If ever you want to meet me or just talk, though I understand if you do not, the agency you were adopted from will always have my current address and phone number. Do not hesitate to call on me in a time of need. Please understand that this is what I think is best for you and me. And know that even though as I write this letter you are not yet born, that I love you and I always will.
Forever yours,
Kanaka Higurashi

~Three and a half months later~

Nariko Shoji or Nari adopted a beautiful baby girl with thick black hair and luminous blue gray eyes. Her name was Kagome. Along with Kagome came the offer to change her name. Nari refused, she would never hide from her daughter the fact that she was adopted. Also came a sealed letter with a plea from Kagome's biological mother that the letter be given to Kagome upon the occasion of her sixteenth birthday.
