Chapter One: The Letter
“Mama, I'm so sorry,” Kagome Higurashi said with tears in her eyes. She was sitting at the bedside of her mother Nari, who was dying from a rare bone wasting disease. Nari reached on a fragile hand to cup her daughter's face.
“For what are you sorry, Kagome? You did not give me this disease. You weren't even alive when the event that killed my few relatives happened. So don't cry my darling. You have nothing to be sorry for.” Nari told her.
“If I had been your real flesh and blood daughter I could have given you the bone marrow you needed. I could have saved you.” Despite her efforts to control her tears a few slipped free. “If you had tried to have children of your own instead of adopting me you wouldn't be here right now.”
“Kagome,” sighed Nari. “You are my real daughter. And I love you just as much and maybe even more than I would love a flesh and blood child. Never once have I regretted my decision to adopt you. My only regret is leaving you now with no one to care for you.”
“I'm eighteen mama, I can take care of myself.” Said Kagome smiling through her tears. She had said that so many times starting when she was sixteen. Now she would never be able to say it again.
“You might be eighteen but you're still my baby.” Nari replied. “I'm sorry honey but we have to face facts, I'm not going to get any better. I'm going to waste away and slowly. I don't want you to see that. Soon you'll be starting your senior year of high school. The most important year of them all and I don't want you spending all your time visiting the hospital or worrying about me. So I have an appointment to talk to my lawyer next week. Once I've gotten all my affairs in order, it shouldn't take much longer than a month, I'll be telling the doctors to pull the plug.”
“Mama, no!” Kagome grabbed the hand still cupping her face. “No mama, a month isn't enough time to say goodbye. Don't leave me.”
“Kagome!” Nari said sharply. “Calm down child. I love you, I always will and I will always be watching over you. You know that. But I refuse to waste away in some hospital waiting to die. I'm going to tell the doctors to pull the plug. There should be enough money saved up for you to pay the rent on the house until you leave for college. And if you don't want to stay there then use the money to find an apartment.” Kagome nodded, by now she was crying uncontrollably and couldn't bring herself to speak. “Now as I said the only thing I've ever regretted when it comes to you is leaving you alone in this cruel world. And that is something I don't have to do.”
“What are you talking about mama?” Kagome managed to say in a trembling voice.
Nari sighed heavily. “I never hid the fact that you were adopted from you,” she said. Kagome nodded. “But there is one thing I did hide.” She sighed again.
“Mama, don't strain yourself please. Whatever it is it can wait.”
“No it can't. When I adopted you Kagome the agency gave me a letter from your biological mother. She wanted it to be given to you on your sixteenth birthday. And I meant to give it to you, truly I did.” She broke off in a coughing fit.
“Mama it's okay. It doesn't matter. She doesn't matter. Only you do, you're my mother.” Kagome assured her.
“Yes, I am. I raised you to be my own and you are. But she does matter, because like it or not she's your mother by birth. The one thing I could never be, which is why I never gave you the letter. I was scared that you'd go looking for her and leave me alone. It was a selfish reason to deny you the knowledge of your blood family.”
“No, mama-”
“Stop interrupting me Kagome Higurashi. I never changed your last name; I felt it wasn't right. Look in that draw Kagome there's an envelope addressed to you in it. I never opened the letter.” Meekly Kagome did as she was bid and found the envelope that had her name written on it in an unfamiliar elegant script. “Find her Kagome and reconcile any differences you may have. To be without family, without anyone in the world who cares for you unconditionally is the worst thing in the world. I never met, talked, or corresponded directly with your biological mother. However I did sometimes send pictures of you to the agency where you were adopted with the hopes that they would pass them on to her. You should be able to find her with ease if you enquire there.”
“You are my real mother. But if this is what you wish me to do I will mama. But know this, I will always love and you will always be my mother.”
“I know darling. I know.”
A month and a half later Kagome Higurashi buried the only mother and only family she ever knew. Then after moving out of the house that held to many memories and moving into an apartment she started her senior year of high school. Half way through the school year, after grieving long and hard Kagome judged herself ready to fulfill her promise to her mother. The promise to find and meet Kanaka Higurashi.
