Chapter Two: Meeting The Family
Kagome sat in a small rental car outside a pretty white house. She made no move to get out of the car. Instead she reached for her cell phone and speed dialed her best friend. It rang once, twice, three times before someone picked up. “Hello?”
“Sango?” asked Kagome in a timid voice.
“Kagome, what's wrong?”
“I'm here.”
“Here where, here as in Tokyo?”
“Here as in sitting outside the house of my biological mother. I…I can't do it Sango. I can't just knock on the door and say Hi I'm your long lost daughter.” Kagome said.
Sango sighed. “You should have let me come with you Kagome. For moral support or something.” She thought a minute. “I'll tell you what. Why don't you go back to your hotel and call her and set up a meeting. At a nice café or something.”
Kagome breathed a sigh of relief. Sango had just given her a major out. “Thank you so much Sango, you're a genius.”
“Of course I am,” chuckled Sango. “I've got to go call me after you talk to Kanaka.”
“Okay, bye.” Kagome hung up then started the car and drove away. Inside the pretty white house a teenage girl stood looking out the window wondering who it was who had been sitting out there for so long.
It was the next day and Kagome was getting ready to meet Kanaka after an awkward conversation the day before. Kagome had picked the place, it was a rather upscale café simply called The Café. “Hey Sango,” Kagome hadn't been able to decide what to wear so she'd called Sango, who had seen ever article of clothing she had. “I can't decide what to wear. Help me out?”
“I know just the thing,” Sango said after a moment of thought. “You remember that dress you modeled when you did the business wear thing?”
“I modeled about ten dresses and kept like five.” Kagome said wryly.
“You know what I mean, the black sleeveless one with the white satin.”
“Oh, I know what you mean now. That's perfect.”
“And wear your hair up in a clip, and go light on the make up.”
“Yes mother. Do I ever go heavy on make up?” Kagome rolled her eyes. “Thanks buddy you're the best.”
“Of course I am. Call me when you get back from your meeting. Love ya.”
“Love you too, bye.” Kagome hung up and went to the small closet where she'd hung some of her clothes. The dress in question was a sleeveless black floor length dress. It was form fitting at the top with a white satin collar, three rhinestone buttons, and a white satin band around the waist. Kagome put the dress on and put her hair up in a clip as Sango instructed. Then she added a clear gloss to her lips and then lined her eyes and put on mascara. Then she checked herself in the mirror. “Okay,” She took a deep breath. She glanced at the slim gold dress watch on her wrist. “Time to go.” She slid her feet into a pair of black and white heeled sandals then headed for the door.
She arrived first, something she was thankful for. It would give her time to gather her composure. She entered the café found a table declining to order at that moment. For what seemed like an eternity but was really only a few minutes Kagome sat with her eyes glued to the door. Finally it opened admitting a rather young looking woman. She was slightly taller then Kagome with short brownish black hair and brown eyes. But the shape of the face was unmistakably the same as Kagome's. The woman glanced around and Kagome could tell the moment the woman laid eyes on her. For the first time ever Kanaka and Kagome Higurashi's eyes met. Kagome stood quickly as Kanaka came over.
They stood facing each other; neither knew what to say. “Um, hi.” Kagome finally said. Kanaka smiled.
“Hello.” She said in a low loving voice. They sat down. “I'm, I'm glad you finally decided to meet me. I thought I'd never see you other than in the pictures that were sent to me.”
“Oh, I'm sorry. I really just read the letter some months about half a year ago when my…mother died.” They were silent. A waitress came to take their orders. Kanaka ordered an iced mocha latte and Kagome got an ice tea and a lemon pastry.
“I'm so sorry about your… mother,” they both seemed to have trouble saying that word. Kagome because she didn't want to offend Kanaka, and Kanaka because she still found it painful to think of someone else raising her child. “How did she…”
“A bone disease. Very rare, we had no other family so there was no one to give her the marrow she needed.”
“Oh.” Their drinks arrived. “So you're eighteen now right?” Kagome nodded. “Are you out of school already?”
“No I'm in my senior year now. I decided to take some time off to come meet you. My mother insisted that I should. So I wouldn't be alone in the world.”
“And I thank her from the bottom of my heart that she did.” They sipped their drinks. Kagome nibbled her pastry. “So it's just you now, do you need anything. Money, a place to stay?”
“No thank you. We had some money saved up and I sold our house. Plus I do some modeling on the side. With the money from those I'm able to keep up with the apartment rent and get the things I need.” Kagome couldn't think of anything else to stay. Neither could Kanaka it seemed. They sat there sipping their drinks and occasionally making some inane comment about the weather or their surroundings. Finally when the drinks were finished Kagome stood. “It was lovely meeting you,” she said rather politely. “I, I really should be going home now. I don't want to miss too many days out of school.” She picked up her purse and pulled out some money.
“Oh no let me,”
“It's okay. I want to pay. Well, goodbye.” Kagome placed the money on the table and started to walk away.
“Wait! Don't you want to meet your siblings?” Kanaka asked. Kagome stopped.
“Siblings?”
“You have a younger sister and brother. Your father, you biological father and I met up again in college. We realized our love was just as strong as it had been when we made you and we got married. When I was twenty we had your sister Kikyou. Four years later we had Souta.”
“So they're my full blooded brother and sister?”
“Yes.”
“They'd be about 14 and 10 now?”
“That's right. They're at the house. If you want to come meet them.”
“I, I've always wanted a little brother or sister. I'll follow you in my car.”
Kanaka smiled and led the way out of the café. The drive back to her house was about twenty minutes. And that was twenty minutes too long. It gave Kagome time to wonder and doubt. Should she really meet them? Maybe she should just slip back into her life and remain unknown to them. What if they didn't like her? What if they hated her? Maybe she should just go back to the hotel, she could call and apologize to Kanaka later. All the thoughts and doubts running through her head made her want to call Sango but before she could pick up the phone they were pulling up to the pretty white house. Kanaka got out of the car and waited for Kagome. Kagome took a huge breath and got out of the car. She smiled at Kanaka then followed her up to the front door.
Kanaka unlocked the door then stepped inside calling, “Kikyou, Souta! Come here, there's someone I want you to meet.”
“Just a minute mama!” a female voice called from somewhere in the house. There was the sound of running feet on stairs.
“Mama!” A little boy came barreling into Kanaka. “Hi mama.”
“Hello Souta, darling.” Kanaka smoothed his hair with a gentle hand. “Kikyou come here now please. Come into the living room Kagome.” Kanaka led her out of the small entry hall and to the right in to a cozy looking room. “Sit down, make yourself at home.” Kagome settled her self in a comfy armchair and Kanaka and Souta sat down on the couch.
“Here I am mama.” A teenaged girl walked into the living room drying her hands on a dishcloth.
“Good. Souta, Kikyou I want you to meet-“
“Kagome.” Kikyou said for her mother.
“You, you know who I am?” Kagome asked surprised.
“How could I not when mama has dozens of pictures of you? It's nice to finally meet you. Took you long enough to come considering you could've gotten our address at any time.”
“Kikyou!”
“It's alright.” Kagome said. “I suppose she'd be right if it weren't for the fact I knew nothing about my biological family until about half a year ago.”
“Either way you've had half a year why didn't you come as soon as you found out?” asked Kikyou.
“Oh I don't know, the little fact that my mother was on her deathbed. And then there was that whole needless grieving period of the woman who raised me.” Kagome answered sarcastically. She stood smoothing her skirt as she did. “It was lovely meeting you Kanaka, a dream come true. And you Souta have to be the handsomest little brother a girl could have,” She smiled at Souta and he smiled sweetly in return. “You Kikyou, could use a lesson in manners, though I'm sure your rudeness could have nothing to do with how Kanaka raised you. However it's still nice to know I have a little sister. I'd love to stay but I should be getting back home, don't want to miss to much school.” With that Kagome left the house. She was just climbing into her car when Kanaka called her from the doorway.
“Kagome wait! Please!” Kanaka came running down the porch steps. “I'm sorry about Kikyou. She tends to be somewhat protective of me since my husband died.”
“Your husband? My, my father?” Kagome asked.
“Yes, he died three years ago. In a car accident.”
“I'm sorry.”
“It's alright. Come back inside, please?”
“Okay.” Kagome followed Kanaka back into the house and into the living room.
“Kikyou?” Kanaka said sternly.
“I'm sorry,” muttered Kikyou not sounding at all sorry. “I'm sorry for my rudeness and I'm sorry for your loss.” Kagome said nothing. She couldn't bring herself to accept a fake apology so she simply nodded in acknowledgement of Kikyou's words.
“Kagome,” said Kanaka hesitantly. “I, I know you've just met us and all and we haven't exactly gotten off to a good start but…I was wondering maybe you could stay here and get to know us better, and we could get to know you?” Kagome opened her mouth to answer but Kanaka rushed to finish first. “I know you don't want to miss anymore school but maybe you could transfer here? You'd be going to the same school as Kikyou, she's a freshman this year.”
“I, I really don't know,” said Kagome somewhat overwhelmed. “I'll think about it and get back to you. I should really get back to my hotel. It was nice meeting all of you.” Kagome walked out the house and back to her car in a daze. Once she was out of sight of the house she pulled out her cell and called Sango.
“Hey Kags how'd the meeting go?” Sango asked as soon as she answered. Kagome told her everything that happened and about the offer to stay there and get to know her family.
“Should I do it?” she asked.
“Duh Kags! This is a once in a lifetime chance to get to know your mother, and your bro and sis. Though your sister sounds like a little brat. She's probably just worried you'll usurp her place in your mother's affections; not to mention her stature as oldest child. But anyway you should do it. I'll take over your apartment here so if you decide to come back it'll be waiting for you. I'll even go up to the school for you tomorrow and start the transfer process for you; with my help you'll be starting school Monday. Call Kanaka and get the name and address of the school then call me back.”
“Thanks Sango. You're my rock. I love you.”
“I know and you better if I'm going to school on a Saturday for you. And you need a rock as indecisive as you are. Call me back.” Sango hung up. Kagome took a deep breath.
“I can't believe I just let Sango talk me into switching schools halfway through my senior year.” Kagome said out loud. “Oh well it's probably for the best.”
A/N: All right! Second chapter all done, yay! (InuLover does her happy dance.) So anyway don't forget to review yadda yadda yadda. Oh and by the way Inu-Kag15 yes this will be centered somewhat around Kagome's love life but it'll still be a lot about getting to know her family.
