Chapter Six: Touchy Touchy

When French was over and Kagome left the classroom Inuyasha was waiting outside for her. “So how was your first French class?” he asked.
“It was… interesting. This class is behind my old class by one lesson, so it was cool,” Kagome answered. “I'm starving when's lunch?”
“Now, we're just waiting for Hoshi,” Inuyasha said. As they waited Kouga came out of the classroom.
“Hey Kagome,” he said. “Why don't I walk you to lunch?”
“She's got an escort,” said Inuyasha before Kagome could answer. Just then Miroku came out of the classroom. “Finally, let's go,” Inuyasha said stomping off. Kagome looked after him bewildered.
“What's with him?” she asked Miroku.
“Don't worry about it, come on or we won't find a lunch table,” said Miroku starting after Inuyasha. Shrugging Kagome followed. By the time they caught up with Inuyasha he was already in line to get his food. Miroku and Kagome cut the line to get behind him.
“Wow,” said Kagome marveling at all the choices. “Lunch here is definitely better than at my old school.” She helped herself to a serving of her favorite food Oden. To this she added fresh kiwi and a soda pop then paid for her food. She was humming happily as Miroku led the way to a clear table.
“You must like to eat,” said Miroku looking at Kagome's big smile as they sat down.
“Nothing hits the spot quite like oden,” Kagome said between bites.
“If you like it that much you can have mine,” Inuyasha said. “I don't really like it, but I wasn't paying attention to what I got.”
“Thanks,” Kagome immediately pulling his plate over to her. A couple minutes later Keiko sat down beside Kagome.
“Wow, two servings?” she asked. “How do you stay so skinny?”
“Fast metabolism,” Kagome mumbled around a mouthful of food. “Excuse my manners,” said Kagome after she'd swallowed. “Haven't had oden in a while, and it's my favorite.” They all laughed and then the table was silent for a moment as everyone ate and Inuyasha brooded tipping his chair back into two legs. “So,” Kagome said after she'd finished her food and had started on Inuyasha's. “Is anyone going to tell me what's going on between Inuyasha and Kouga?” Her question caused a variety of reactions. Keiko choked on her drink and started coughing; Miroku pounded her on her back while trying to conceal a grin. Inuyasha was so surprised that he forgot his chair was tipped back and fell. “Wow, it must be something good if everyone reaction is so big,” Kagome said gleefully. “So, spill.”
“Look its old news, and really none of your business. So just forget it, okay?” said Inuyasha after he'd gotten up. For a moment Kagome looked taken aback at his tone and his sudden attitude.
“Well excuse me for asking a simple question,” Kagome snapped. “I just thought it'd be smoother sailing thorough my first couple days if I knew why people think that both you and Kouga being interested in me is sooo fascinating. And maybe I just wanted to understand a little more about someone who I hoped would be my friend. But that's okay, I'm sure there's plenty of other people I could ask. Like Kouga for instance.” Kagome got up and left the table heading straight for where Kouga was sitting with his friends.
“Wow,” said Miroku after a stunned moment. “I guess she's not all sweetness. That girl has a temper. I think you're lucky she didn't throw her food at you.”
“I don't care,” snapped Inuyasha. “It's none of her business and she had no right to ask.”
“Actually she kinda did,” said Keiko timidly. “She's new to the school and as soon as she gets here she has both you and Kouga chasing after her. To people who know the history between you and Kouga, that's news. People are already gossiping about it. She has a right to know.”
“Well, you don't have to worry about telling her. I'm sure Kouga will,” said Miroku gazing across the cafeteria to where Kagome was sitting with Kouga.
Kagome marched over to Kouga's table. “Hey, mind if I sit here?” she asked indicating a seat across the table from Kouga.
“Of course not Kagome, you're always welcome anywhere I am. In fact,” Kouga turned to the guy sitting next to him. “Ginta hop up and let Kagome have your seat.” The boy obediently got up and moved to another empty seat and Kagome sat down. “No tray?” asked Kouga. “What's wrong, eating with dog breath over there make you lose your appetite?” Kouga and the others laughed.
“Something like that,” said Kagome rolling her eyes. “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure doll face, ask me anything you want.” But before Kagome could say anything the bell rang and they stood to leave.
“Come on,” said a voice behind Kagome. She turned to see it was Inuyasha.
“Excuse me?” said Kagome.
“Come on or we'll be late for Oceanography,”
“Don't worry about it dog breath,” said Kouga putting an arm around Kagome. “She's got an escort.” He walked away propelling Kagome forward. She looked back at Inuyasha and shrugged. Scowling Inuyasha went over to where Miroku was waiting for him.
“I thought you were going to get Kagome,” said Miroku.
“She's walking with Kouga. Let's go,” growled Inuyasha.
When they got to class Kagome was sitting beside Kouga and the chair on her other side was occupied. She gave Miroku a smile when they walked in but completely ignored Inuyasha. At the end of the class Inuyasha heard Kouga tell Kagome, “Meet me at the front door when school lets out, I'll walk you to your car.” Kagome nodded in response. Kouga wasn't in their next class English so Kagome sat next to Miroku and completely ignored Inuyasha. Inuyasha wasn't in her next class, World History, so the only people she knew were Keiko and Miroku. At the end of the day she met Kouga and he walked her to her car as arranged. When they got to the car Kikyou was already waiting for Kagome. Kagome introduced Kikyou and Kouga to each other.
“So it was nice meeting you,” Kouga told Kagome as she leaned against the driver's side door. “If you give me your number, maybe I'll call you later.”
“Maybe?” asked Kagome playfully.
“Definitely,” Kouga corrected.
“Okay,” Kagome tore a strip of paper out of her notebook and wrote her number on it then gave it to Kouga. “See ya later,” she said getting into the car.
“Yeah, later,” Kouga answered. He stood there and watched as she drove away.
“I can't believe the second most popular guy in school walked you to your car and asked for your phone number on your first day of school,” said Kikyou her voice tinged with envy.
“Yeah well, I've got it like that,” said Kagome.
