The night was young as Kagome hopped off of Ah-Un. "Thanks Ah-Un, you may leave now." The dragon nodded its heads and then took off into flight. Kagome turned around to stare at the well. "I never actually told them about my true self," Kagome thought as she sighed. It had been a few months since her rebirth and she only visited her family on her human night. She didn't know why though.
"Maybe its because I'm afraid what they will think of me," Kagome thought. She shook her head," No, if they were able to accept Inuyasha for who he was, then maybe they would too. Kagome scowled as that name came into mind. Kagome then jumped into the well.

Smoke instantly hit Kagome's nose when she reached the bottom of the well. What was happening? It couldn't be something that her mother overcooked, she could smell too much smoke. Kagome jumped out of the well and opened the doors to be blinded with orange, yellow, and red flames. Their shrine house was on fire. Kagome couldn't believe her eyes as her house danced in flames. Kagome ran to the house and jumped to her window sill, the only thing that wasn't being badly burned. She busted the windows in and jumped into her room. She shielded her eyes, but it couldn't hide what she already knew. Her bed, dresser, closet was all on fire. Everything that she used to do, was now being destroyed. Kagome ran to her desk to see if anything could be saved. Everything on the desk was in flames. Her foot scraped against something. Kagome looked down and picked the piece of paper up.

It was a photo of herself when she had used to be human, next to her was her mother, brother, and grandfather, all smiling. Kagome bit her lip as she stuffed the photo into her robes. She turned to the door. It was also in flames. She didn't care, she busted the door down and ran into the master bed room, being her grandfathers. When she broke through the door all she could see was yellow and orange. "Grandpa!" Kagome yelled, hoping to hear her grandfather. When she heard nothing Kagome ran to Souta's room. The room was also covered in flames, making it impossible for Kagome to venture deeper. Kagome ran to her mothers room.
She found her mother laying on the bed, smoke was everywhere. The flames weren't as bad, but they still were there. Kagome shook her mother.
"Mama! Wake up, we have to go!" Kagome yelled over the roaring of the flames. When her mother did not respond to her calls or shakes Kagome lifted her up, and made way to get out. The first place they went was back to Kagome's room, the place where she came in. Her room was now caked in flames as the ceiling there started to give. The only exit was the front door, downstairs.

Kagome jumped down the stairs with her unconscious mother as she ran threw the flames, earning some bad burns. Kagome didn't worry, she would heal faster. Kagome spared a look at her pale mother, sweat went down her face from the hot flames. Kagome looked at her with concern, she must have inhaled too much smoke. Sirens echoed through her ears as she heard cars pull up. "It must be the fire department," Kagome thought quickly as Kagome ran past the burning kitchen. As she got closer to the for the ceiling above them was beginning to crack and fall. Bits and pieces fell on them, but they didn't hurt. As Kagome reached the door she swung her right leg out and kicked the door down. Kagome was met with people she didn't know as they asked a million questions. Kagome moved past them and laid her mother on the ground.
"Please, my mom needs help!" Kagome yelled. The paramedics ca,e toward them with a stretcher and began to take her mother away. The fire-fighters began to douse the fire and venture inside. Kagome went to follow her mother into the ambulance. As she sat there, holding her others hand as they began to drive away, Kagome couldn't help but glance back at the shrine. What she saw shocked her.

There, on the ground, were three white bags. Two of them life size, the other one much, much smaller. The other paramedics began to take the bags away. Kagome didn't miss the small paw that hung out from the smallest bag. Tears sprung out as she realized that her mother wasn't the only one in the house. She hadn't been able to save the rest of her family. She didn't see them, smell them, couldn't find them. The flames were too hard on her. She could have saved them, but she didn't, all because she was too weak to even smell them out in a fire. Kagome took the photo she was also able to save and she brought it to her face as she sobbed loudly, still holding her mothers hand.

In the hospital Kagome sat next to her sleeping mother on her hospital bed. The police had questioned her, she said she had been out during the time of the fire and when she had gotten home the shrine had already been in flames. She said she only had time to save her mother. The police didn't question why she looked the way she did and had said she should be glad she had rescued her mother, but Kagome thought otherwise. Guilt hung over Kagome like a blanket. She was a weak excuse for a half-demon. Kagome glanced at her mother, she should be glad she at least saved her mother, but Inuyasha would have been able to save them all. It was a mistake she could never redeem. Kagome's mothers eyes opened slowly as her dull brown eyes went to look at Kagome. She smiled faintly at her.
"Oh Mama," Kagome said sadly. Her mother continued to smile at her. Kagome's mother began to cough roughly and her breathing became uneven. Kagome went to the button above her mothers bed and pushed, calling for the nurse. It seemed to Kagome, that her mother was giving her a good look at her, taking in the way she now looked. Kagome's ears lowered as she thought of what her mother would say about it.

Kagome's mother smiled more as best as she could, she was about to speak but she coughed even more. Kagome pressed the button again.
"I love you Kagome," her mother began to say as she rasped for air. Kagome tightened her grip against her hand, only to have her mother return it. Kagome looked at her with tears in her eyes as she replied, "I love you too, Mama." Kagome sniffed as the first of her tears came down.
Her mother continued to speak, "I want you to be happy with who you are, Kagome. Being who you are makes it all more special."
"No, Mama," Kagome said as a choked sob escaped from her. Kagome pressed the button above her mother's bed as hard as she could without breaking it. Her mother's eyes began to close.
"No, Mama! Stay with me!" Kagome begged. Kagome's mother kept her eyes open long enough to look at her and smile.
"Do your best, Kagome."
Kagome stared at her as her eyes closed and her breathing slowed. Kagome snapped back into reality,"No, no Mama!" Kagome yelled, squeezing her hand, hoping she would squeeze back. She never did.

Her breathing stopped.

A long, echoing beep could be heard.

"MAMA!!!!!!!!!!"
-------------------

Kagome eyes opened with a snap as she lurched forward in the tree she rested in. Her heart pounding in her ears. She clutched her chest as she tried to ease her breathing. That dream, the day she lost her only family left. It could have been a lie, if she had lived when she killed herself, if someone had saved her from her decision, it would have been a lie. She would still have another family. The family the slept under her, well, except for one fossilized one.

If she was still completely human, she would have been able to accept that they were family. Now that she was different, Kagome could not accept it. They were no longer the family she used to think they were. They were just companions on the same journey. Nothing more, nothing less. Kagome rested herself back against the tree as her heart calmed. She sighed as she watched the sun rise, glancing once at the other half-demon sleeping on the ground.

"Mark my words, Inuyasha, I will haunt you until the day you die."
Kagome smiled as she hummed a lullaby her mother used to sing her when she was younger, her hand resting on the picture of them under her clothing.
