ON WITH THE SHOW!!!
Inuyasha clearly miscalculated his jump. He managed to make it through the window but there was a counter that he wasn't expecting. He managed to almost trip over it and land in a heap on the floor. He stood up painfully. He had jarred his broken leg badly in the fall, and with the itching feeling around his neck he was guessing he broke a couple of stitches open.
He caught Kagome's whimper and followed it to what in the dark seemed to be the living room. Thankfully the moonlight gave him just enough to make out the shape of the couch, chair, and large old box TV sitting on the floor. He blinked a couple of times and was able to make out Kagome sitting on the couch. From her scent she was bleeding lightly and scared silly.
A thump brought Inuyasha's attention to a large man rummaging through a near by shelf. He was Youkai of that Inuyasha was sure. A deeper sniff reveled Neko Youkai and he growled. He had enough issues with them when he was his regular self.
The Neko Youkai were his father and brother's worst competitors. Usually he was the one that got called in to defend the family company against their claims in court. The latest one was about illegal substances being used in their pain killers which lead to a deep and uncalled for investigation of their whole company. 'What the hell are they doing here?'
The Youkai in front of him threw things onto the ground. Inuyasha watched as a jar of something was tossed carelessly on the ground with a crash.
"Hey!" Kagome nearly growled as she shot off the couch in anger. She had a terrible feeling that was her grandfather's urn that just hit the ground.
Unfortunately that was all she got out before the intruder turned around and backhanded her once again causing the scent of blood to taint the air. She fell back against the couch with a squeak.
Inuyasha snarled. The cat must not have heard because he continued to stand above Kagome with a grim smile. "Pathetic human. You should learn to keep your mouth shut when you're not involved."
Inuyasha had had enough. His ears pricked forward and his lips curled, showing a fantastic set of teeth. He snarled and lunged when the Youkai pulled back to aim another smack. His teeth sank into the back of the great cat's neck and he held on and hung there. He continued to growl and shook as hard as he could hoping that his weight would cause even more pain.
Kagome was sure she was about to be beaten when the intruder gave a feline scream and reached around trying to get something. What, she wasn't sure as his body was in the way. Finally the man spun and she saw Inu hanging from the back of his neck looking as vicious as the first night she brought him home. His golden eyes flashed as he attempted to adjust his hold on the stranger's neck. She took the opportunity to shoot off of the couch and into the kitchen where she grabbed her purse and started for the door.
The great cat finally got smart. He reached over his shoulder and grabbed the scruff of Inuyasha's neck, bent forward, and threw the dog onto the floor with a resounding thud. Inuyasha slid a little until he hit the bookshelf and was back on his feet once more. For a second he reminded himself of the old American cartoons with the big brown and black dog running in one place and never making it anywhere because he was sliding. Finally though he got his footing and he caught up with the cat just before he reached Kagome. He managed to slip around and cut him off.
The Neko Youkai was knocked back as Inuyasha's weight. He growled and bit any place he could get a hold of. The cat rolled on him and they continued snarling, growling, and in the cat's case, hissing at each other.
Kagome took the opportunity Inuyasha offered her once more, opened the door, and took off. Once she was sure she was far enough away she dialed the police.
Inuyasha and the cat continued to fight on the ground. They were loud enough Kagome could hear them from outside of the house. Within a few minutes the red and blue lights began to flash though the windows signaling the police had arrived. Inuyasha's teeth pierced the cat's arm as he tried to hold him still long enough for the cops to bust in. The cat snarled and smashed Inuyasha's body against the counter until he was dizzy. Finally he couldn't hold on any longer.
As soon as Inuyasha's hold on the bloody arm slipped the cat spun and took off towards the back of the house. Inuyasha followed in a close second. The cat made it out of the window and Inuyasha continued on without question. At least it wasn't HIS head breaking the window this time.
Kagome sighed in relief as one of the officers approached her. "We got a call saying there was an intruder?" She nodded unable to speak. Then she spun and pointed towards the house. "Do you need an ambulance?" He eyed the blood seeping down the corner of her mouth. He turned to head towards the house with two other officers but she caught his arm.
"M-My dog is in there. Big white furry dog. Don't hurt him or anything, please?" It was the first sentance she was able to get out since she placed the phone call. The officer nodded and followed the others into the house to investigate it.
Kagome pulled out her phone once more and called Sango.
"What's wrong Kagome?" Her voice was thick with sleep.
Kagome heard Miroku in the background but ignored it. "Sango... Someone was in my house tonight."
Sango gasped softly, "Oh my god, Kagome are you okay? We're coming over!" Miroku was mildly protesting in the background and Sango hung up, effectively cutting him off to Kagome.
Another officer came down from the porch. "Ma'am we didn't find your dog. It appears the intruder made it out of a window in the back of your house. Is it possible the dog may have followed?"
Kagome nodded. "He protected me. I don't think it would surprise me if he did follow." Her voice shook with worry. What if he did follow? Would he return? The first officer she had spoken to called from the doorway that the house was empty and it was okay for her to return inside.
The officers turned on the kitchen light and she slowly approached the house. "Kagome!" She turned at the sound of her name and was wrapped into a warm comforting hug. Sango let go after a minute and began pulling her into the house.
The cops were just heading out. "We took pictures of the damage. I would suggest getting storm windows to replace all of the regular ones. It will make it way harder to get in. Also you should replace these locks. I would even go as far as getting an alarm installed." This only helped to freak Kagome out.
"Thank you officer." Miroku led the officers away as Sango led Kagome into the house. Kagome instantly went for the broom to clean up the glass all over the floor.
She went for the glass in the back of the house first. Sango followed first, refusing to leave Kagome alone. The girls also began to tape up the back window while Miroku took care of the front. He stopped when he heard a scratching on the door.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Inuyasha chased the cat a fair few blocks before it managed to find a low enough ledge to jump onto. Even as the cat jumped across the roof tops Inuyasha still followed. Unfortunately he changed directions and Inuyasha found himself unable to follow. He paused and realized just how much his back leg was starting to throb.
He turned around. He needed to make sure Kagome was okay. 'It's the least I can do right?' He felt like he was trying to convince himself. He shrugged away the feeling and limped back towards the shrine.
It took awhile before the steps came into sight. Especially at his slower than usual pace. Finally he managed to hobble up the last step. He could smell Sango's scent as well as the man he had gone after before. He considered moving back to his blanket to get some well deserved sleep. 'Oh screw that. I'm going inside.' The window he had crashed through earlier was taped up for the most part.
He hopped onto the porch and began scratching at the door. With any luck someone would open it.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Miroku heard the scratching and looked out of the kitchen door window. "Hey Kagome! Inu is back! He's a little worse for wear but he's back."
Kagome immediately dropped what she was cleaning. "Where? At the door? Let him in!" Miroku did as he was told and Inuyasha limped in. His ears were flat and his fur was caked in blood. Some of it was his own, some of it was feline.
The end of his tail twitched as he approached Kagome. 'I couldn't catch him, Kagome.' He whined softly and sat in front of her. She knelt down, wrapped her arms around his neck, and buried her face in his thick fur.
The tears finally came.
Sango and Miroku stood together and watched Kagome cling to the dog.
"Who would do this?"
"I don't know, my love. Something tells me whoever was here tonight will be quite reluctant to return." Sango nodded and didn't bother questioning him calling her 'his love'. She also allowed him to put his arm around her. Until she felt a hand run over her rear.
The echoing slap pulled Kagome out of her upset enough to look at her friends. Inuyasha cocked his head slightly blinking at the nice red hand print sprawled across Miroku's cheek. 'That'll teach him.' Not that it mattered. He could smell Miroku all over Sango anyway.
Kagome pulled away from Inuyasha and took in the fact the front of her shirt now had blood caked on it as well as Inuyasha's fur. Sango also noticed. "C'mon Kagome. You need to get cleaned up."
"But what about Inu-"
"Miroku will take care of him. Now let's get you in the shower." Kagome just nodded and let Sango lead her towards the livingroom and then the stairs. Before they disappeared from sight she turned and gave Miroku a look clearly saying 'Don't follow'.
Miroku sighed. "Well boy. Looks like it's just us. Might as well do as the lady says and get you cleaned up too." He was going to pat the dog casually on the head but Inuyasha's dark growl and matching glare stopped that idea. He sighed and walked over to the cupboard in search of the first aid kit he knew Kagome kept around.
Kagome climbed into the shower absently. The adrenaline rush had left her body and now she was almost asleep on her feet. When she came out, Sango was nowhere to be found but she could hear the distant rumble of Miroku's voice. 'I doubt he's talking to himself...' She followed the voice to the brightly lit kitchen where Sango and Miroku sat at the table with cups of steaming tea. The second she sat down Sango placed another steaming mug under her nose. "Thanks, Sango."
Inuyasha padded forward and ran his nose gently over Kagome's leg. 'She's tired but there's no blood or anything.' Satisfied a bit further that she wasn't hurt he laid down at her feet and placed his head on top of his paws.
Kagome looked over at Miroku who gave a deep yawn. "You don't have to stay. Whoever it was that broke in probably won't be coming back." She recalled Inuyasha's defending her and smiled slightly. She reached down and rubbed his neck gently earning her a calm look from the dog.
"Nonsense. You've been through hell tonight and I know you would do the same for us." Sango's hand wrapped around Kagome's and she offered her friend a warm smile.
"That's true, Kagome." Miroku chimed in. He moved between the girls and made to grab both rears but a dark growl stopped his hand from inching it's way towards Kagome.
"Miroku, meet my new grope detector." Kagome smiled a little brighter and patted the dog affectionately. He sat up and place his head in her lap.
"I- uh- Maybe we should take our leave, Sango?" He eyed the dog wearily. He had seen the amount of blood around Inuyasha's mouth and knew it had been from his teeth tearing into someone's flesh. He wasn't about to be next.
Sango glanced over at her best friend who smiled tiredly. "It's okay, Sango. I've got Inu. Something tells me nothing is going to get in without his noticing." at the mention of his 'name', Inuyasha perked up.
Nothing could beat the feeling that flowed through him for a second. 'She feels safe around me.'
Sango gave her friend a hug followed by a closely watched Miroku. "Thank you guys. I don't know what I would have done if I'd have had to go through this alone." Her smile was interrupted by a deep yawn.
"Get some sleep, Kagome. We'll stop by tomorrow." Miroku opened the door and was pushed through it by Sango.
The door clicked shut and Kagome turned to the dog. "Let's lock up and head to bed. Sound good?" Inuyasha woofed gently and followed her around as she locked the door and all the windows. When she was satisfied everything was locked she shut the kitchen light off and headed upstairs with Inuyasha's large body close behind. She remembered the broken window in the back and realized it was stupid of her to bother locking everything but shrugged away the feeling and shut and locked her door.
She made sure the window was locked and there was no chance of opening it without breaking it then pulled her blankets back. Inuyasha watched her patiently as she climbed into bed. Buyo, Kagome's obese cat had taken residence on the foot.
Kagome scooted over and smiled at the dog. "C'mon, boy. You can sleep up here too."
He didn't even hesitate. In a second he was curled up on his side with his back to her. Kagome instantly threw an arm over his furry body and cuddled up closely. Within seconds her breath hitting his fur evened out and she slipped into a deep sleep, leaving Inuyasha to his thoughts.
'Go figure. I find a female that isn't so shallow that she can only see money signs on me and I'm a fucking dog. I must have done something horrible in a past fucking life.' His golden eyes closed and he sighed. 'Still, I have a rather good looking, perfect smelling female wrapped around me. Life is almost good.'
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Rin nearly jumped out of her skin when the knock on her door sounded. She had woken up nervous over the date she had agreed to with Sesshomaru and as time passed it got worse. "Just a sec!" She pulled on the second shoe and opened the door.
Inwardly she gasped. Sesshomaru stood, golden eyes fixed to hers. Thankfully the simple black dress she wore didn't seem to make her over or under dressed thanks to the fact he wore a simple white and red dress shirt and black dress pants. His hair was down as she had usually seen it and she was kind of happy. Something told her he wouldn't look good with it up.
He eyed her apprizingly and was happy to see she was dressed semi casually. At first he wanted to take her to the fanciest resteraunt in Tokyo but changed his mind at the last second. He got the feeling she wouldn't enjoy all the stuffy rich things like most women that threw themselves at him did. And he was right. Without him needing to tell her she stood in exactly the kind of outfit for the type of date he pictured her enjoying. Dinner, a movie, and maybe a walk around one of the many beautiful parks.
"Shall we?" It was actually a question instead of a command.
Rin smiled. "Of course!" He offered his arm and she took it. They were pretty much quiet until they reached the car. Sesshomaru being the gentleman he was opened the door for her then closed it when she was all the way in. He walked steadily around to his side and started the car. "So how was work?"
That opened her up. Instantly Rin went from the shy girl that opened the door to the talkative, happy girl he had met at the hospital.
While he drove she told him about her day including Kagome's chat with Naraku. She told him a little about her family or lack there of as well as her love for her work and her hopes to push it farther.
To say Sesshomaru didn't talk would be a lie. He had spoken with her more than he had with anyone else including his brother. 'Where is that whelp anyway?' He shrugged his concern away in favor of hanging onto Rin's words. 'Probably out rutting on worthless females.'
They pulled up to a nice restaurant and Rin sighed in relief which didn't go unnoticed by the Inu Youkai sitting next to her. 'Thank the gods it's not all uptight and fancy.' She got out when Sesshomaru opened the door and took the arm he offered. he placed an arm around her as they walked. The Host for the night looked Rin up and down for a split second then turned away when Sesshomaru glared icily.
"So what about you? You have family around here?" She smiled politely toward the waitress who handed her a menu.
Sesshomaru nodded towards the woman and ordered tea for both, but he only had eyes for Rin. "My mother has been dead since I was little," He gave a tiny smile at her concerned look and took her hand from across the booth they sat in. "And my father died a few years ago," Her concerned look deepened and he squeezed her hand gently. She knew what it was like to lose pretty much her whole family. "But I do have my half brother. He's actually the Lawyer for the company. Best lawyer I've seen too, but don't tell him that. He's got enough ego as it is."
Rin giggled. "He's a little shorter than you with dog ears right?" Sesshomaru nodded. "I've seen him before I think. Wasn't he with you when I showed you around the hospital?"
Their talk was interrupted by the return of the waitress with their tea. They both placed their orders and returned to talking. Sesshomaru was surprised at how at home he felt with her. He captured her hand and brought to his lips for a gentle kiss. Rin smiled brightly up at him and moved her foot against his. It just felt good to touch him.
He told her stories about he and his brother when they were kids and the fights they used to get into. "He tends to be more than a little ill tempered and once in a while pushes this Sesshomaru to his limits even today." The way he said it proved he meant no real violence towards his brother. Rin chalked it up to boys being boys.
At first she thought it odd how he referred to himself as 'this Sesshomaru' but as he said it it seemed to fit more and more.
Their food arrived and they turned their attention to eating.
Sesshomaru paid, left a rather large tip, and led Rin away from their table. He glanced at his watch. They had plenty of time to make it accross town to the movie. He opened the door again and helped her into the car.
He turned on the car. "So which movie would you like to see?"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Inuyasha woke to a thumping and groaned. 'Go away!' He growled inwardly and inhaled the sweet scent of the girl next to him. she also had started to stir at the sound. The thumping continued along with some muffled yelling. It sounded like someone was calling Kagome's name.
Kagome finally opened her eyes and did an impressive version of Inuyasha's own growl before she untangled herself from the blankets and started crawling over his furry white body. He lifted his head and admired her rear as she moved across the room to throw on a robe. 'This is definitely a better way of waking up compared to last time.' And it was true. Last time he had been outside and instead of waking up to a beautiful girl he had awoken to a rather loud boy yelling at him. 'Damn. The only way this could have been better is if I was back to normal. Oh. And if she was naked.'
She unlocked the bedroom door and he was immediately up and moving ahead of her to check out the house just in case. He hadn't smelled anything but he continued to move in and out of every room on the top floor. She stopped to watch him curiously as he continued his search. Finally when he seemed satisfied enough he moved downstairs in front of her. Upon reaching the bottom step he repeated his steps and searched every room. A sharp knocking sound reminded Kagome why she was awake to begin with.
Inuyasha also heard it and rushed to the door with a deep snarl. Kagome pulled on the scruff of his neck gently and checked out the window on the door. "Ssshh Inu! It's a friend." She opened the door and he moved between her and the new comer to sniff them throughly.
"Hey princess, woah what happened here?" the last person Inuyasha expected stepped through the door. 'You son of a bitch!'
Koga's bright eyes took in her ruffled appearance and the broken window over the counter. "Long night?"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Rin sighed in contentment as she and Sesshomaru stepped quietly down a quiet path through the park. He took the lead with his arm around her waist and she was perfectly fine with that. She was in her own world where only she and the man next to her existed and she was okay with that. She was so deeply involved in her own thoughts she almost didn't hear him speak.
"I had a good time with you, Rin." Sure. She had picked the girliest movie possible and he had to sit in a restaurant not up to his usual caliber but to be honest it wasn't all that bad. She didn't get nervous by what he was. Commanding, cold, and untalkitive. She didn't mind taking control of the conversation and giving up control when he wanted it. She also didn't mind the subtle touches he gave her instead of full on PDA like most of the females he had dealt with wanted.
The fact she didn't become upset when he showed dominance towards other males eyeing her amazed him. The fact he bothered to show that she was his was even more amazing. They stood in line waiting for their tickets another demon -bird by the scent of him- glanced her way. He casually placed his hand at the small of her back and glared icily at him. Rin paused in her one sided conversation, took in the silent argument, and leaned gently into his touch like she knew exactly was she was supposed to do.
She had even bared her neck to him submissively once. Sesshomaru didn't think he could be so taken by a female. Especially a human.
And because of all this he stood infront of her now, in the soft moonlight shining through the park trees almost at a loss for words.
"I loved tonight as well, Sesshomaru. I haven't had this much fun in forever!" She grinned brightly up at him and the corners of his mouth twitched slightly.
"This Sesshomaru would like to repeat tonight if possible." He winced at the formal tone and words inwardly and awaited her reaction.
She flashed him another of her happy grins. "I'd love that!" She was surprised he didn't command it like he did last time.
The man of many words that he was, Sesshomaru granted her a slight smile. "Good." And with that he leaned in and brushed his lips against hers commandingly.
Rin sighed and gave in instantly. She opened her lips and allowed him access, instantly deciding Sesshomaru was the best kisser in the world.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The phone was on the third ring by the time Kagome had managed to pick it up. She barely got the greeting out of her mouth before her ear was nearly blown off by a squealing from the other person.
"KAGOME! Oh my GODS you wouldn't believe the night I had with Sesshomaru!" She held the phone at arm's length and waited for Rin to stop squealing.
"Really? Was it good?" She knew it was a stupid question but she was slightly distracted by Inuyasha and Kouga.
She nearly laughed as Inuyasha and Koga both tilted their heads at the high pitched squeak from whoever Kagome was talking to. That was the first thing they had done the whole night without snarling at each other.
As soon as Kouga had entered the door it was almost a full out dog fight. Inuyasha continued to snarl at him and Kouga snarled back. Kagome wasn't surprised as she knew Kouga was a wolf demon but it was still a little unsettling to watch them both 'talk'.
'Kouga you idiot what are you doing here?' Inuyasha's ears were pinned against his head as he bared his teeth. Kouga looked slightly confused for a moment. Then his eyes lit up with recognition and he gave the dog infront of him his signature arrogant grin.
'I should ask you the same thing mutt! What's with the new get up? And what are you doing at my woman's place?' Kouga paused in the argument enough to embrace Kagome and give her a kiss on the cheek.
'Fuck off. She's not your woman and if Ayame heard you speaking like that about another female she'd rip your tail off and shove it down your throat!' Kouga winced slightly as he pictured the wrath he would indeed receive from his mate. Had she not known of Kagome already, that is.
'You fuck off. Ayame knows Kagome is like a sister to me. You never did tell me how you got here and why you LOOK like a dog. Is this supposed to be your transformed state? If it is Sesshomaru is going to laugh his icy ass off when he hears about this!' Kouga cracked a smile.
'No, you fucking idiot. This isn't my transformed state. Kikyou did this to me and I nee-' That was as far as he got before Kouga stopped him with his laughter.
'And you need me to save your ass because you're stuck like this right? What happened to me being a worthless wolf? I suppose I've proven to be worth a little more now huh?' Inuyasha had to wait for the laughter to subside before he could answer.
'Again, fuck off. I don't need your help. I'm only here until I heal enough to figure out how to change myself back. Getting hit by a car hurts a helluva lot more when you don't have demonic power.' This caused Kouga to laugh even harder.
'YOU GOT HIT BY A CAR?' He had tears coming from his eyes and at that point Kagome stepped in with a gentle hand to Inuyasha's head.
"What did he say, Kouga?" She was quite curious by Kouga's state of humor.
"Nothing much, Princess. Just that he's glad to have such a nice place to stay and a pretty girl to keep him company." Inuyasha growled a few swears but Kouga ignored him.
"Did he say his name? Where are his owners? I haven't seen anything about a missing dog like him around here."
Kouga looked at Inuyasha thoughtfully for a second before his eyes lit up with a fantastic idea.
Inuyasha's eyes widened in fear. 'Oh fuck you, Kouga. I swear to the Gods if you screw me-'
'Not listening to you, mutt-face.' Kouga barked back simply before turning his attention to Kagome. "He was born on the streets but you may want to get him a collar and tags. He's a nice dog. You wouldn't want anyone to steal him, right?"
'You DICK HEAD!-'
"Huh.." Kagome regarded the dog thoughtfully. "I suppose maybe I should. Besides. I can see someone having a fit about him not being properly identified..."
"Oh. And his name is Inuyasha." Kouga stopped Kagome's gibberish.
Kagome smiled and knelt to Inuyasha's height. "Hello Inuyasha, I'm Kagome!"
Kouga laughed and Ignored Inuyasha's grumbling and threats.
"So what happened here?"
For the rest of the day Kouga helped Kagome put the house back together. He also supervised the new windows being put in as well.
Inuyasha also supervised but he more so made sure Kouga stayed far enough from Kagome. As soon as Kouga got within arms reach of her Inuyasha growled. While Kouga ate he laid next to her chair and contemplated his situation. 'It's not like I want her. It's the principle of the thing. Besides. She doesn't need his stench all over her anyway.'
His day continued that way until the house was cleaned up and they sat watching TV. Kouga sat on the floor with Kagome on the couch. Inuyasha lay next to her, his head in her lap while she rubbed his ears gently.
They stayed that way until the phone rang and much to Inuyasha's dismay Kagome lifted his head and moved out from under him.
His ear twitched to a muffled vibrating noise and he turned to see Kouga fish his phone from his pocket and check it. He flipped it closed then proceeded to walk up to Kagome.
"Ayame is off work, I gotta go pick her up. Try to stay out of trouble while I'm gone." He smiled good brotherly and gave her a hug.
"Bye, Kouga. Thanks for the help!" Kagome had moved the phone long enough to kiss him on the cheek and return the hug, then went back to talking excitedly to Rin.
Inuyasha followed Kouga to the door.
'Hey.' He woofed quietly. 'Make sure Sesshomaru doesn't worry his pretty little head too much. I'll figure out how to get back to normal soon enough.'
Kouga nodded. 'Noted, mutt-face. Stay out of trouble and keep Kagome safe. Whoever did this is bound to return.'
'It was a Neko Youkai. Possibly the ones Sesshomaru has been having trouble with. I don't have any clue as to why they would come here though.' One of Inuyasha's ears twitched towards the living room at the sound of Kagome's laughter.
'I'll share the information with Sesshomaru. Maybe he'll have an idea. I've got to go get Ayame. And thank Kikyou on her great job with your new form...'
'You son of a bitch!' Inuyasha's growls were ignored and the door slammed in his face. He could still hear Kouga's laughter through the door. He turned away and growled. 'What a dick.'
A/N: And there you have it. It took forever but it's the longest chapter yet. Yay! Thank you so much for reviews and feel free to leave more. They're a great ego boost!
