Jaken came carrying in some more dusty scrolls. It seemed to both the toad and Inuyasha that Sesshomaru was on a mission to find a specific manuscript. Sesshomaru had tied up his long hair into a high ponytail very similar to his fathers and had put on more comfortable clothes. A servant brought in some drinks and small dishes of different kinds of sushi.

Inuyasha lay back on the dark wood floor and popped the small morsel into his mouth. Looking at his brother he began to get annoyed.

“You haven't said anything for several hours now, are you gonna explain anything to me?”

Sesshomaru looked up at his younger brother noticing the bored scowl on his brother's features.

“Do you plan on staying with this mortal?”

“What the hell is that suppose to mean?”

Inuyasha said now sitting up with a straight back. Sesshomaru sighed.

“Did you pay attention to any of the teaching Jaken gave you?”

“Yes, I did.”

“Than you know you have three days after marking her to determine whether you made the right decision or not.”

Sesshomaru moved some more scrolls off shelves and looked through them rapidly as Inuyasha sat there with his mouth open wide in stupid silence. He did forget about that and just now realized that what if he wanted to change his mind, if he did, she would go mad and now it hit him what Sesshomaru had said earlier. If he pissed her off she could very well destroy them all with just a thought.

“Well, if we can't find a cure for her…you're going to have to kill her so that she won't be a danger to us.”

“What the hell, I don't intend on killing her! I never wanted her…”

“Inuyasha was it not you who had told me just this past autumn to kill her and be done with it?”

Inuyasha growled of coarse his brother would smack him in the face with the stupid stuff he's said in the past.

“It's not like that alright, it's just that…well, she's been through a lot and…if we can't cure her, damn it all I don't want to do that I don't want her death on my head.”

“That would be inevitable Inuyasha.”

With that said he held up the scroll he was hunting, opening it, he skimmed through it and found the information he was searching for. Inuyasha noticed that Sesshomaru's manner had changed and raced over to his side to look at the scroll.

“What…what did you find?”

Sesshomaru slid the scroll across the dark cherry red table over to his younger brother and said not a word. Jaken looked on curiously.

“My lord…what is the matter?”

Inuyasha looked at it and read than re-read it again.

“There is no cure that is known to us to help Hotaru. Not any that can help a mortal.”

Inuyasha turned around and walked slowly out of the library. Sesshomaru looked on as he saw his brothers' slumped shoulders and receding form.

“There is still something that is curious to me Jaken…”

Jaken looked up at his master.

“What is that lord Sesshomaru?”

“He said that she seemed to have a side that acts youkai that houses half her mind. I wonder…”

`I wonder if there is a way that she is being possessed by a youkai instead of harboring one within her. Either way, she is dangerous far more dangerous than I had first suspected.'

“Ah, this is the life…”

Hotaru said as she sunk into the steaming hot bath. Her day had been long and nerve wrecking. Once Shippo brought her back to the castle he apologized and told her again that she shouldn't worry about anything and that Inuyasha cared deeply enough; telling her that the symbol on her collar bone could attest to that. However, she had the witty supply that he might have just meant that in the moment.

Immediately she sought after Ino, the one whom she confided in. After seeing her she had things in better understanding. Though she didn't agree with it, she understood it.

“It's not fair Ino, why? Why should the woman go mad to the point she kills herself or has to be put down and not the man, he's the one who marked her after all!”

“We do not question these rules, for they were in standing from the beginning of our time; but does it not happen to mortals as well for instance a mortal female turns into a bitter spirit and haunts the man in her state of madness, thus driving him mad or until she is exercised by a monk or priestess.”

“So, that's just some folktale to me. In my time a broken hearted woman has the chance to heal and love again…look at me…I was broken hearted, I was pregnant and abused and I…I fell in love…again. Who made up this mating rule anyway?”

Hotaru ended lowly almost in a whisper. Ino looked at the raven haired beauty. There was truth in what she had said. Hotaru did fall into a deep pit in hell, but she managed to climb out of it and recover with the affection that her master had given the girl. This was the reason why she was so fascinated with the lives of humans and enjoyed studying them.

“To answer your question it was the first male youkai as the legends states.”

Than looking at the girl in a curious manner she continued “We youkai can learn a lot from your kind… your resilience to come up above the odds and survive. We only think in that way to win a battle, but not with matters of the heart.”

“Is there a spell or something that could break that bonding so that women can survive?”

Ino closed her eyes and meditated as she filtered through all of her past ancestors for the information she sought.

“There might be a way; however, we need more time to explore this.”

Hotaru gave a hopeful sigh while fingering the mark on as she sunk deeper into her hot tub and smiled to herself, maybe, there was a way she could help all other female youkai to get out of this madness til death just because the male decided to change his mind. It really wasn't fair. Maybe she was here after all to help in some small fashion. But what if there was nothing she could do. What if there was nothing that she could have helped to change. Shaking her head and thinking positive she pulled up and dried her hands. She wanted to read those journals of her mothers.

She grabbed the book and held it for a moment.

`Should I do this? I mean…this is my mother's, it's her private thoughts…but…I want to know who she was before…before the drugs…was she like me?'

She moved the candles to give her better light and began to read the first entry.

`Hi, my name is Kagome Higurashi. My fifteenth birthday is coming in a few days and I am looking forward to it. I bought this hello kitty journal as a gift to myself, so, here I am, I am going to write down my life's boring saga.

Souta has been such a bother, he's been picking on me about getting older and that I don't have a boyfriend. I could soo give him a few knocks upside the head, but if I do mom won't like that and then she'll commence on saying that I am not acting my age, so, I just ignore the little booger. Anyway, my friends think that this guy in class name Hojo likes me.

I wonder if he'll ask me out. He seems nice enough and he's pretty popular, but, he seems so, oh I don't know he's nice, safe, conventional. I was kind've more interested in a guy whose a bit rough and wild, but that wouldn't be my type of guy would it?'

Hotaru turned the page and began reading, she felt a little excited and curious now.

`I don't know what to say, was it a dream, it had to have been or at least a nightmare. I will start at the beginning. When I woke up this morning I had that feeling again, like things were going to be different for me. I couldn't really put my finger on what it was, but, I shrugged my shoulders and got ready for school. Grandpa had given me a plastic trinket that he called the shikon no tama a jewel that was all powerful and was wanted by both man and youkai. I gave it to the cat to play with. I was expecting something else, don't ask me what. Well, I got that something else. I wound up in Feudal Japan!'

Hotaru read that line over again at least three times.

`Mom was here? How…why?'

She continued to read.

`I had been abducted into the well by a centipede youkai which was really gross. She kept saying for me to give her the shikon jewel I blasted her and wound up in the past. I was at first bewildered, I thought I bumped my head or something, but these villagers came up to me and snatched me up. There was an old lady there named Kaede. She fed me and asked me a whole heaping of questions. I answered her but I was still in awe. The next day I went wondering around, I had to try and find a way home when I saw the sacred tree…and pinned to it was a boy, actually, he was a young man, probably not that much older than me…I had the inclination to touch him, something within me wanted to be near him, but, I couldn't fathom why I just followed my inclination. He had long silver hair…'

Thump

`And fuzzy ears on top of his head…'

Thump

`And he seemed so…beautiful to me, I touched them but nothing happened letting him go I walked away from him, but something deep within me felt so sad.'

Hotaru felt her heart thumping rapidly beneath her chest. Somewhere from deep within she knew she was going to find out something she didn't want to know. Placing a bookmark in the page she put the book down and got out of the water. She dried up and looked in the mirror. She still felt her heart racing.

`Why….why am I feeling this way?'

She looked in the mirror over her shoulder to where the book sat. Her mind started to burn.

`Read it Hotaru…we have every right to know why our mother was here. Why didn't she tell us, what is she hiding.'

“Shut up Hitomi, I am going to read it.”

`Tsk tsk, so defensive Hotaru, I am finally agreeing with you on something, now read the damn book.'

Hotaru looked at herself in the mirror and she thought she saw Hitomi smirk darkly at her. Breathing she grabbed up the cherry blossom from the sacred tree and smelled it. Calming herself she picked up a robe and donned it on than grabbed the journal and carried it to the bed in the room she shared with Inuyasha. She opened the book after making herself comfortable.

`Well it turned out that I had the jewel within my body. The old lady Kaede believes that I am the reincarnation of her sister, a priestess named Kikyo.'

Hotaru stopped breathing.

“Could it be Inuyasha's Kikyo?”

`That centipede creature tore it from my body; though the jewel was supposed to have been burned with the body of the priestess it revived itself within me. However, another thing occurred. The nasty creature was going to kill me when I some how re awakened the boy I saw pinned to the tree and get this after saving my life he wanted to kill me to get his grubby hands all over the jewel. That insufferable cur hadn't even thanked me for freeing him of the spell he was under, He couldn't say my name not once! Well, I wound up shattering the jewel trying to get it back with no help from that stupid jerk and now I have to help to find all the shards. I feel like a total idiot, no thanks to that stupid youkai that calls himself Inuyasha.'

There it was the name that she so feared was going to come up in this book. She wondered why her mom wouldn't mention Inuyasha to her when telling her the stories before bedtime. For some reason she felt betrayed by her mother again and by Inuyasha. She shook her head, she was being unreasonable, there was no reason why her mother had to tell her any of this, it wasn't like her mother was expecting her to fall down the well too, than thinking further to herself…

`Well, how is Inuyasha supposed to know that I am Kagome's daughter? He probably has no idea…yeah; he'll be surprised to learn that one out.'

Turning the pages she saw some of her mother's sketch work of Inuyasha. Hotaru rubbed her hands delicately over the paper, he didn't look that much older than he does now, but, there was a maturity in his face now than back then. His face then was distrusting, alone and filled with bitterness. Knowing that he had felt betrayed by the woman Kikyo and knowing that history, she wondered how he still became the man that she knew now. She continued to read. She read how they met Shippo and seeing a sketch of the young fox Hotaru smiled, for he totally looked different all grown up. She wondered what her mom would think if she happened to see them now.

She continued to read:

`Today on our travels we met up with a very different type of monk. He's flirtatious and I say that lightly, he lies and cheats oh and by the way he steals, but, he's a nice guy. I don't know why I trust him so much. He stole my shards of the shikon jewel and my bike, but, there is something about him that I like. Unfortunately, he has a wind tunnel in his hand that he must keep covered up, and he fears that one day this curse will kill him like it did his father and grandfather. I guess that is why he asks every pretty female to bear his children. I guess I should be flattered that he thinks I'm pretty because Inuyasha surely doesn't think so. God I can't stand him sometimes he's such a pompous idiot! Anyway, the monks name is Miroku and he's going to start traveling around with us too, since he too is looking for the evil monster named Naraku.'

Hotaru sat up in the bed after reading his name.

`Daddy? She met daddy… here? Now why couldn't either of them tell me this!'

She turned the page to see a younger version of her father. She lightly ran her hand over the page seeing her father so young looking. She always wondered why there weren't any pictures of him in his youth, but so many of her mother.

Flash back

“Mommy, Daddy, why are there so many pictures of us, grandma and Souta as children but none of you daddy?”

Kagome and Miroku looked at each other fumbling for an excuse when finally Kagome spoke up combing back the raven curls from Hotaru's small forehead.

“Well honey, see, it's painful for daddy to think about his pictures because when he was little all the pictures of him and his family burnt in a fire.”

Hotaru's little purple eyes teared up for her daddy and running over to him she threw herself into his torso nearly knocking him over.

“I'm so sorry daddy that your pictures got destroyed in the fire. I'll give you some of my baby pictures so that you can have some too kay.”

“It's alright sweetie, you can keep your pictures, you were a much cuter baby than I but I thank you for your generous offer.”

End flash back

`So, she met him in the past and married him. Why didn't either of them tell me? Why did they keep it secret? Maybe they were afraid, afraid that I might tell their secret since I was so young and then maybe as I grew older they thought it wasn't' necessary for them to tell me.'

She continued to read and she read the part with Sango and her brother Kohaku the fire cat Kirara who sounds so interesting, she wondered why she hadn't met that cat yet.

Soon the door opened and she looked up to see Inuyasha. For seconds they looked at each other and Hotaru found herself mad at him, mad at him for knowing her mother.

“What are you reading there?”

“Nothing, just a book from home is all. Inuyasha we have to talk.”

“I know, Sesshomaru's here too. He wants to see you.”

Hotaru grew cold, so soon, she wasn't expecting him so soon. What did it mean?

Inuyasha sensing the emotions and thoughts going through her head he comforted her.

“No, he's not making a decision yet; he's just…well, he's curious about you at the moment. Apparently, well, my marking you was supposed to kill you and it didn't.”

Remembering that her anger from earlier returned.

“Yeah, so I've been told! I've been told a lot of things today Inuyasha. If I don't see a mark on your wrist soon, I'll go crazy and die! How could you do this to me?”

Inuyasha slumped his shoulders.

“In all truth, I didn't think, I totally forgot alright…I didn't mean to take a chance with your life…it just…well…”

Hotaru could feel that he was morose she dropped the subject and went to go put on some clothes from her bag. Inuyasha watched her step into a long pair of blue jeans and a dark purple sweater.

“Why are you wearing your clothes…don't you like the clothes…”

“It's not that Inuyasha…” she said cutting him off curtly again.

“If he's going to see me I want for him to remember where I came from. I am not from here and hopefully, that will help whatever decisions he needs to make.”

They walked out of the room together; though she was terrified she tried her best to cloak her feelings in her face and eyes. She had to be strong now, her life depended upon it.
