Chapter 8

“Do you still love Kikyo?”

ONWARDS ME MATEYS!

Inuyasha stared into Kagome's eyes and suddenly he realized and his heart shattered as his gaze unbound the truth. He saw the pain and sorrow hidden behind her every smile. He saw the heartbreak she endured every time he ran off to Kikyo. He saw the need for his happiness overpowering her need for her own happiness. He saw the love and pain in her eyes, and her false cheery façade crumbled in his eyes changing into one of pain and despair. And then he understood what his heart had been telling him ever since she had freed him.

She accepted him and loved him.

She had accepted him for who he was. She had loved him unconditionally, not questioning him when he ran off to Kikyo. She wanted him to be happy, no matter who he chose. She had cried over him, she had tended to his wounds despite his insults and his protests. She had not complained once. Not when he kept breaking her heart. Not when he kept insulting her.

Kikyo had accepted his companionship, but she had never accepted him. She had used him for her own selfish desires. She had never allowed her to touch her person. She wanted him to be human while Kagome loved him for who he was. Kikyo was cold while Kagome was warm. Kikyo was death while Kagome was life.

Inuyasha wrapped his arms around the woman he loved and buried his face in her hair as hot tears started falling from his eyes as he recalled every pain and heartache he had caused her.

“I'm so sorry, Kagome.” He whispered in a broken voice.

Misunderstanding his apology for rejection, Kagome's heart began to shatter, as she unsuccessfully tried to pull away from his embrace. Giving up, she settled for resting her face in the folds of his haroi, inhaling his musky sent of woods and pine, whispering, “That's all right. I don't mind.”

It was then that Inuyasha pulled away from her, his tears a thing of the past, as he glared at her angrily.

“Did I say I love her!?”

Kagome gazed at his face not understanding.

“But you just said -“

Inuyasha cut her off, “I was apologizing for old pain. I don't love her. I never did love her, Kagome. I craved for her companionship because I was a lonely hanyou and I mistook her companionship for love. She never fully accepted her as you did Kagome. She wanted me to be human, while you wanted me to remain a hanyou. To tell the truth, you and your family were the first to accept me.”

As Kagome listened to him, her eyes started glistening with tears and threw herself in his arms wrapping hers around him; her face nestled in his haroi. Inuyasha did not blush. He did not yell at her or push her away, instead he chose to whisper in her ear, huskily, “But I did fall in love with a beautiful, loud-mouthed wench, who loves to keep me on my toes.” Saying that he nipped her ear.

Kagome's gasp was inaudible as her heartbeat grew fast.

Did he just tell her he loved her? Whoa, back it up! Did he just tell her she was beautiful?

Kagome's eyes widened, and suddenly she started to giggle.

Inuyasha pulled her away so he could see her face. He had just told her he loved her. He had just laid his heart at her feet and all she could do was laugh.

At him.

He pulled away from her. Gods, he was stupid. He shouldn't have shown so much vulnerability. She didn't love him. Before Kagome could say anything, he jumped into the forest. Kagome was shocked. What did she do? She had just laughed.

Then it hit her. He had told her he loved her and she had laughed.

`Oh, Gods! He must have thought she was laughing at him?'

She jumped up quickly and ran towards the direction he had taken off into. Running blindly, the only thought that came to her mind was to find him and tell him she loved him. Suddenly, she found herself in front of Seshoumaru's castle. The guards quickly opened the gates at the sight of her, as she rushed inside.

She rushed past a worried monk and slayer, who gasped at her disheveled appearance courtesy to blind running. She raced past a stoic lord who pointed towards the room next to hers. Throwing open the door, the first thing she saw was Inuyasha staring out the window. He quickly looked up at her and was about to jump out of the window to run away from her when she whispered, “Don't.” Her heart rate a tad too fast, she panted, gulping in the fresh air.

Regaining her breath, she walked over to Inuyasha and spoke in a hard tone, “Why did you run?”

Inuyasha crossed his arms and replied bitterly, “Keh, you made your feelings pretty clear, Ka-go-me!” He winced as he saw her cringe when he had spat her name distastefully.

Adopting the same stance as his, she quirked a brow and questioned, “Did I tell you how I feel? Did you bother to wait for me to tell you? No! You jut ran off!”

Inuyasha was about to retort when he felt the sensation of being pushed against the wall. He had barely registered the impact when a soft warm mouth covered his. Kagome pushed her lips against the half-demons and kissed him fiercely, trying to convey her feelings to him. Inuyasha gasped in surprise and she used that to her advantage, pushing her tongue into the warm recesses of his mouth. It was then that Inuyasha understood what she was trying to tell him. His eyes narrowed and he pulled her against his chest, and took control of the kiss. His tongue explored every inch of her mouth, as his hands itched to do the same with her body. He could smell her arousal thick in the air, and his mouth wanted to taste the source of it.

However this was not the time or place for that. Kagome pulled away, breaking the kiss, her breath falling in short pants. “Now do you know how I feel?” Inuyasha just nodded dumbly as his gaze raked over bright and excited eye, her flushed cheeks and her slightly parted mouth.

A loud `ahem' sounded from the doorway and to Kagome's dismay and embarrassment, Miroku, with a lecherous grin on his face, a smiling Sango, a shocked Shippo, a grinning Rin and a stoic Seshoumaru stood in the doorway.

Inuyasha snarled at the embarrassment of his mate. Wait a minute, his mate! He had just kissed Kagome and already his youkai proclaimed her as his mate?

`Yes. She is our mate.'

Inuyasha was suddenly confused to hear that voice in his head, but he pushed it aside as he concentrated on the current predicament.

Sango rushed towards the blushing Kagome and hugged her warmly, “It's about time.”
Shippo jumped on his adopted mother's shoulder and grinned at her, “Does this mean you two are mates now?” Miroku grinned lecherously at Inuyasha, “I see you don't waste anytime.” This earned him two bumps on the head from the women, who glared at him viciously.

“What?” he protested rubbing his head, “I was just congratulating Inuyasha on his success with - “ He was not allowed to finish as Inuyasha hit him on the head, knocking him out.

Amidst the happiness, Rin, tugged on Kagome's hand and asked sadly, “Does that mean you'll leave Rin, Kagome?” Kagome knelt down to her level and ruffled her hair, “I don't know Rin? But if I do leave, I'll visit you often. I promise. Now why don't you and Shippo go play outside, while I talk with Seshoumaru.”

Rin nodded and grabbed Shippo's hand and literally dragged him off. Sango and Miroku followed them as they saw that Inuyasha and Kagome had to talk to Seshoumaru.

As they exited the room, Kagome sat down on the bed, her head in her hands. Inuyasha sat down and pulled her into his lap, so that she was straddling him. Seshoumaru had long since left the room.

Their faces close, Inuyasha gritted his teeth and asked the question that had been eating at the back of his mind, “So want to explain exactly how you ended up here and what your relationship with that bastard is?”

Kagome sighed and was about to explain when a neko youkai maid appeared in the doorway and bowed.

“Lor Seshoumaru requests the presence of Lord Inuyasha and Lady Kagome in his study immediately.”

Inuyasha was about to say something when he realized what he had been addressed as. Narrowing his eyes, he breathed, “What did you call me?”

Confused, the neko replied, “Lord Inuyasha.”

Kagome noticed Inuyasha's bewilderment and she thanked the youkai who left quietly.

“Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha looked up at Kagome as she smiled gently at him, “Come on.”

Standing up, She took his hand and intertwined their fingers and led the way to the study. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door which opened itself. Entering the large chambers, she saw Seshoumaru sitting behind the desk. He nodded towards them and then said, “Kagome, wait outside, while I have a word with my brother.” Registering the terms used, Inuyasha was very confused, but he remained standing. Up till now his brother had defended him, told Kagome to listen to his explanation, and had just addressed Inuyasha as `my brother'. Not half-breed but brother. After a long time, Inuyasha felt a warmth inside him.

Kagome nodded and flashed Inuyasha a warm smile before exiting thermo and closing the door behind her.

Seshoumaru looked at Inuyasha and then smiled. Inuyasha could have fallen over in shock.

“I think its time that I told you the truth Inuyasha. About you, your heritage, your father and your mother.”
