Chapter 7
Last time:
Then Kagome received a shock as Miroku carefully said,
“But Inuyasha has been in our sight since you were gone.”
Kagome gaped at Miroku openly, “But- But! I saw him and Kikyo.”
Inuyasha was about to say something when Seshoumaru spoke up, “Miko the half breed might not be guilty of such an act. Hear him out.”
Kagome nodded, dumbly. Inuyasha spoke hesitantly, “Kagome no matter what you heard, you should know that I would never do that to you. I promised to protect you, no matter what. I was with the others the entire time you were gone.”
New tears sprang to Kagome's eyes, as she realized that Inuyasha had never betrayed her. The guards opened the gates and before Inuyasha could do anything, Kagome had ran to him and thrown herself at him. Sobbing loudly, she buried her face into his haroi, “I'm so sorry! I should never have jumped to conclusions. I'm so sorry!”
Inuyasha put his arms around her tightly, and Seshoumaru said, “It seems that the half-breed has to discuss some things with his wench. The rest of you may wait for them in the castle.” With that, he turned around and walked gracefully into the castle. Inuyasha nodded towards, “You heard the bastard. I want to talk to Kagome. Stay in the castle. He may be a bastard, but he won't harm you. He wouldn't dare.” Taking the still sobbing Kagome into his arms, he raced off into the forest.
Miroku, Sango and Shippo looked at each other uncertainly. Miroku spoke out all their thoughts, “Um, maybe we should go inside. It's not like we're defenseless. If he attacks us, then we can fight back.” Sango nodded her head slowly in approval and cuddled Shippo, who had been silent throughout the entire exchange between his friends. He wanted Kagome. She had promised to come back to him but she never had. The three companions entered the castle in silence drawing comfort from each others presence.
As soon as they put foot in the castle, a little girl in an orange checkered kimono came running towards them. Pulling on Sango's kimono, she asked in an innocent voice, “Are you Kagome's friends?” Miroku nodded in compliance, and the little girl pulled them towards the gardens. They followed, helpless to her innocent charm.
Inuyasha raced through the forest, holding Kagome in his arms. His mind was racing with questions. Spotting a lush green clearing, he landed gracefully. “Kagome? Kagome, we're here. You can let go now.”
“No.” came the muffled reply. Inuyasha realized that she did not want to see his face. He gently pulled her away from him, and then he sat cross-legged on the ground plopping her onto his lap. Kagome adverted her eyes from Inuyasha face, but he would have none of it. Holding her face in his clawed hands, he forced her to meet his eyes. The deep sorrow and pain in her eyes, took his breath away, and he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly, as her dam broke once again. A rumbling growl emitted from his chest soothing her and calming her. Slowly her tears ceased and she whispered brokenly, “I'm so sorry Inuyasha. I should have known better than to believe what I overheard.”
Inuyasha pulled her away from his body only so much that she could look into his face. His eyes were fierce, “Stop apologizing, dammit! You just made a mistake!” Kagome`s tear-filled eyes, were also filled with an unidentifiable emotion which he recognized as remorse, “But I-I.” Inuyasha pulled her to his chest again, and spoke in a thick voice, “Stop it! Whenever I hurt you, you forgive me so openly, but when you hurt me once, you don't let me forgive you! Please Kagome! Don't do this! It's okay! Shush.”
Slowly Kagome relaxed against him. Unconsciously, she nuzzled under his chin. Inuyasha barely suppressed a groan. `Didn't she know this was the sign of submission from a mate?' Kagome's hot breath that warmed his neck sent shivers down his neck. He resisted the urge to throw her down and take her there and then. He buried his face in her hair. The smell of jasmines soothed his inner beast, somewhat.
“Um, Inuyasha?” Kagome spoke in a soft hesitant voice.
“Hm?” he mumbled not wanting to take his nose out of soft smelling hair.
“If that was not you, then who was it?”
Inuyasha growled, “My best guess would be Naraku. He set me and Kikyo against each other once. He must be trying to break us up now.”
Kagome asked in a small voice, “But then what was Kikyo doing there? Do you think she'll really kill me?”
Inuyasha snorted, “Didn't I promise that I'd protect you always woman? No one will hurt you, even her!”
Kagome said in a quiet voice, “Inuyasha can I ask you a simple question? You don't have to answer it if you don't feel like it.”
Inuyasha nodded, curious as to what was going on in her head.
“Do you still love Kikyo?”
