Chapter 5: One Night

By Cataluna

Kagome paused in the middle of washing dishes. It had been two week since she had discovered her destiny as the slayer. She went patrolling with Inuyasha every night, hunting demons and vampires.

He was as rude as ever, calling her names and teasing her, and they still argued all the time. But something was different, almost as if they had came to an understanding for each other. She smiled to herself.

She was still inexperienced, but according to Kaede, her skills were improving rapidly. `I can't wait till I can kick Inuyasha's cute ass.' Fortunately, it was summer so slaying was not going to be having a negative effect on her education.

She rubbed her neck. ` Something's wrong. I can't shake this feeling that…'

"Kagome, have you seen your brother?" her mother asked, walking into the kitchen.

She shook her head. She had not seen Sota since this morning. "I think he went over to one of his friends' place." `Come to think of it…I haven't seen my family much since I started slaying.'

"I hope he'll be back soon. It's almost past 10. It's not safe to be out so late nowadays," a worried look on her face.

"Don't worry Mama, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about…he's probably just too caught up with playing video games," she smiled in reassurance.

"Alright, well I'm going to bed now. Good night." She gave Kagome a kiss on the cheek, and walked upstairs.

Kagome rubbed her neck again, and quickly finished washing. `Time to go patrolling,' she thought, noting the time on the kitchen clock. She waited till she was sure her mom was asleep, before taking her crossbow and climbing out her bedroom window.

Surprisingly, Inuyasha had not showed up yet to bother her. `Slow night,' she thought to herself, a little disappointed. She was beginning to like slaying, and… spending time with him. `Not that I would consider hunting for demons as spending quality time… ' A jolt went through her body, sensing it was coming from the alley, she decided to go in and investigate.

The alley was quiet and as far as she can see, free of vampires. She was about to leave when she noticed someone there. `Is that…' she squinted her eyes. "Sota? Is that you?" Her brother was sitting against a wall, his face partially hidden in the shadow.

Kagome smiled. She hid the bow behind her back, and walked over to him. "What are you doing here? Mama was so worried about you…you better go home now. Remember, you said so yourself that it's dangerous to be out in the evening.

"Sota?" He still wasn't answering. `Is he mad at me?' Kagome kneeled down in front of him, and touched his face.

She gasped, feeling the world spin, and dropped her bow onto the floor. He was so cold, and a large bite wound showed on his neck. "Sota!" she said a little more urgently as she shook him. Tears fell freely down her face, and to the ground. `This can't be!' His eyes were vacant...lifeless. `He can't be…O GOD NO!' She screamed and collapsed onto the ground.

Another shot of electricity traveled down her body. `One of them is near. They did this!' Kagome stood up and looked around, a light glow of aura surrounding her, her hair flowed upward through some unseen force. She clenched her fists so hard that her nails broke the skin, causing crimson blood to drip to the ground. `They will pay dearly.'

"Hmmm…is that fresh blood I smell? It must be my lucky day, two meals for the price of one."

Kagome growled, a mask of fury on her face. She attacked him with such force that the creature did not even have time to scream, he hugged his head, hoping she would stake him soon. But she refused to kill him, death was too easy. She dropped down on the floor next to him, and continued to pound madly into him even after he stopped moving.

"YOU KILLED MY BROTHER!" Anger has taken control over her body. She took the cross off her neck and pressed it against his forehead, delighting in his scream and the smell of burnt flesh.

Two strong hands grabbed her from behind, and held her in a rough embrace.

"Stop this. Just finish him," he said softly. It wasn't that he felt sorry for this bloodsucker. That bastard damn well deserved it. All his suffering did not compared to the way she must be feeling right now. He knew how much she had loved her brother. It broke him to see her in such a state. To witness her usual cheerful face be twisted by madness and insanity. He had known from experience that the rage could consume one's mind and body.

Thanks to his enhance hearing, he had heard her anguish scream. And, the smell of her blood…

Kagome continued to struggle frantically against him. She doesn't even recognize him.

`Damn, she's fucking strong.' It was getting hard for him to hold her.

He pressed two fingers to a spot on her neck.

She stopped moving

`Where am I?' Kagome opened her eyes and was greeted by blinding rays of the sun. `How long have I been asleep?' She blinked a few times, trying to focus her vision, and took in her surrounding.

She was lying in a large bed with red satin sheets. The room was spacious, with high ceiling and a skylight. The wall was decorated with various weapons: axes, swords, daggers.... Before she could observe farther, someone stepped into the room. She tensed, ready to attack.

"Oi, you're awake. You've been asleep for two days"

`Inuyasha'. Kagome nodded and breathed a sigh of relieve. That's when she realized her hands were bandaged.

He glanced at her hands. "You've never hit anyone like that before, have you? They were pretty fucked up… should be fine now with your power."

She sat up and unwrapped them, not a trace of injury. Memories of what happened that night flooded through her. She closed her eyes, buried her face in her hands and began to sob. `Sota.'

Inuyasha was left speechless. He hated to see women cry. A frantic looked appeared on his face as he debated on what he should do, when Kagome suddenly stood up. He recognized the look of determination in her eyes. "Don't even think about it," he warned, his eyes narrowing. "You're not going anywhere!"

"I have to go…I didn't get to finish what I started."

"Don't worry about him. He's dead." After dropping her off at his place, he went back to the alley. That son of a bitch was still alive, trying to crawl away. Inuyasha then proceeded to break everyone of his bone before finally finishing him off. He had enjoyed hearing him scream.

"It's not enough, there are others. I have not been taking my responsibilities seriously, or else Sota would still be alive," she whispered, holding her hand to her heart.

"You're still not going anywhere…consider yourself my captive till I say you can go."

"Fuck off, you can't keep me here…stop pretending like you care." she hissed, surprised by the tone of her voice.

Inuyasha froze for a moment, shocked by her language and the fact that he DID care, a lot.

Kagome walked past him, and tried to take down one of the weapons from the wall.

He growled, and in a blur of red and silver, appeared right in front of her. He punched one of his fists against the wall, creating a large dent. His amber eyes flashed with fury. "Idiot! You maybe able to handle facing one or two vamp, but you are not skilled to fight a dozen…especially not in your current state of mind. You're good, but not good enough. In fact…" he wrapped his other hand slightly around her throat, leaned in, and whispered, "You're lucky that I'm not one of the bad guys. It wouldn't take much of my effort to finish you off."

Kagome shivered, but not from fear.

He released her.

She threw her hands into the air and exclaimed, "So what do you expect me to do? Nothing? Wait here and let those monsters kill more innocent people?"

He ran his hand through his hair in frustration. "Fine…rest now. In the mean time I'll take over your duty. Take time to grief, I'll train you when you're ready…then you can kill those bastards."

"But I thought Kaede was supposed to train me. She is my watcher."

"Keh. That hag is too old. She can barely walk. Unless you want to learn how to fight with a cane, you should let me train you!"

Kagome watched as they lowered his coffin into the ground. A sea of faceless figures, dressed in black, surrounds her. Her face reminded blank as they approached her one by one, offering condolences. She had no more tears to cry.

It has been one week since his death. `I have to be strong.' Her mother was too brokenhearted to attend the funeral. The doctor had to sedate her.

`Sota. Mama. I do this for you,' Kagome thought as she toss in her red rose. The sea of black parted a path for her as she walks away.

Kagome knocked quietly on his door. She fidgeted with her clothes while waiting. `Why did I wear this? I usually wear t-shirt and shorts when I go running.' She was dressed in black sport bra and leggings, with a gray sweat jacket to hide her mark. Kagome sighed. `I'm hopeless.'

Tired of waiting, she opened his door. "Inu…" Kagome nearly choked as she saw a shirtless Inuyasha practicing with one of his sword. Make that a sweaty and shirtless Inuyasha. His back muscles flexing, as he maked a swipe at an invisible opponent. She was mesmerized. `So graceful…he moves like a cat.'

He finally acknowledged her. "Bitch, you're late."

`He has to ruin it by opening his mouth!' "How many times do I have to tell you that my name is Kagome! Ka…go…me!"

He smirked, glad to see she was back to her old self.
