Nothing came.

This silence was so awkward...

Inuyasha swallowed. His throat was dry. He felt dizzy.

Kagome felt no different.

She turned her back to him and said quietly, "I told you, you wouldn't feel the same way..."

Inuyasha grunted in uncertainty and bewilderment.

More silence... this one seemed endless.

"Kagome, I... I don't know what to say..." He admitted, his voice cracking from such a long silence.

"You don't have to say anything... I just... needed to tell you." She replied.

She was going to walk away again, but she realized that wouldn't change anything, so she stayed put.

"I... I can't say anything..." He stumbled on what to say next. "M-maybe you're right... maybe it... is just PMS?" He was hoping that would end the situation, but it didn't.

Kagome put on a fake and slightly sarcastic smile. Somehow she knew he'd have a response like that.

She shook her head, but didn't say anything.

There was another silence... longer than the last...

"Well... what do you want me to do about it?!" He asked, trying to sound like his usual self.

"I don't want you to yell at me." She replied firmly.

Inuyasha let out another uncertained grunt.

"Look, Kagome... I... I'm sorry I can't give you the answer you're looking for... I can't. I can't tell someone I love them... when... I'm... already..."

"I know." She abruptly interrupted.

Her voice got thick.

"That's why I was afraid to tell you." She responded.

Inuyasha felt himself sadden. He was not prepared for this at all.

"Well, what do you want me to say?" He asked.

"It's obvious enough... don't force yourself. If you're going to do that, then I don't want to hear it." She said.

"You want me to say I love you?" He asked.

Kagome didn't respond.

"What if I did?" He began. "What if I did tell you I loved you... and then ran back to Kikyo again? ...Would you hate me, or go back to your era and never return again?" He asked.

"...No." She responded. "I can't blame you for loving Kikyo."

"But I don't want to hear it unless you mean it." She added.

"And I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it."

"You aren't saying it..."

"I want to say it..." Immediately he scolded himself for saying that out loud. He had just been replying to her by instinct, and at first it came out how he wanted it to. The last sentence was not ready to be released yet, although he meant it.

Kagome turned to look at him.

"I'm in love with you, Inuyasha... even if you decide to die with Kikyo, I'll still love you..." She then turned back around. "For everything you've done... for just being you... I don't know what I love you for... I just do." She admitted.

"And that's what I wanted to tell you." She finished.

Kagome didn't expect him to turn her around and pull her into an embrace... but he did.

She was just as surprised as she had always been when he had done that, slowly melting into him.

It was silent again... broken by the sound of Kagome's sniffles and tears.

She squeezed him close to her and sobbed into his haori.

After a few moments she finally broke between her sobs.

"Why are you hugging me?!" She suddenly yelled, taking her fists and clenching his shirt with all of her might. "I don't want you to tease me!" With that she began to struggle to get loose, but he wouldn't let her. "Why're you forcing me to feel you against me if I can't have more than this?! If I can't have what fufills my need for you?!" She still struggled crying and trying her best to be freed from his grasp.

But he kept a firm hold.

Maybe she didn't want them this close, but he did and he was hoping she'd understand that.

Finally Kagome broke loose, only to trip over a branch and fall into the creek, where she thought she would only feel a hard bump when she landed on her back, but instead felt a much more intense pain. It was as if something had stabbed right through her body. She opened her mouth and tried to inhale, but she couldn't for some reason. She felt like her insides had just been torn out of her and she couldn't breathe because of it.

"Kagome!!" was all she heard before her world faded into blackness right before her.
