Chapter 11: This is Our Last Goodbye.
Soothing warmth surrounds Inuyasha, and had it been any other moment in time, he would have questioned it. But as he drifted slowly through the dark expanse of his mind, it seemed only natural.
His mind had been so dark lately, so cold, and the warmth around him brought him tremendous comfort; it was a feeling that seemed to have escaped him for the past few days. These past few days were important.
Inuyasha couldn't recall much about his current situation. His mind was clear of all thoughts, and he knew his body was acting merely out of instinct. He wondered why he had been forced into this dark place in his mind yet again. It seemed so familiar, and yet, so foreign.
Just outside the black expanse, Inuyasha could see a redness that was pumping slowly, and he somehow knew that there was great anger held in that place. He knew he couldn't venture over to that side. That was suicide.
What was it? There was something important about these past few days. He had some sort of mission, and it was digging at him. But no matter how long he sat in the dark silence, he couldn't bring his memory to recall what it was.
He had never been this long in the darkness, and he was wondering if he would ever feel the light again. But it wasn't so bad here in the dark. It was lonely, but at least it was warm.
Warm. He hadn't been warm in ages, and the soothing warmth that surrounded him brought him tremendous comfort. But he couldn't recall what he was supposed to remember.
There was redness beside him that was throbbing slowly, and somehow he knew that there was great anger held inside it. It was suicide to go over there.
He couldn't remember what he was supposed to do.
It wasn't so bad here in the darkness. Lonely, but warm.
He hadn't been warm in ages.
He'd never been this long in the dark.
Lonely. Dark. Warm.
He couldn't remember.
Anger.
Blood.
Inuyasha's face slammed down hard on the stone floor, and he groaned as the throbbing began. His eyes remained shut, for he feared the light would blind him should he open them.
He was confused as to what happened, but soon the smell of blood reached his nose. It was his blood.
He tried moving slightly, but searing pain shot through his body. He was so scared.
He opened his eyes, and blood dripped into them, causing him to squint sharply as the pain surprised him.
Looking at the floor, it was covered in his blood. He was feeling light headed.
What had happened?
As his eyes focused more clearly, he was able to make out a human like shape that was curled on the ground a short distance from him. Why did it seem so familiar?
He forced himself into a slow crawl over to the figure, stopping to reach a bloodied hand out towards it. As his fingers touched the delicate skin, a pleasurable sensation shot through his body.
Putting his hand on the figure's hip, he turned it towards him slowly. As the face came into view, he opened his mouth in horror. Everything slammed back into his mind at that very moment and he screamed out in pain, anguish, and depression.
It was Kagome. Her eyes were shut, but she was still breathing, and Inuyasha thanked Kami for having the mercy to keep her alive.
“K-Kagome,” he coughed roughly, his throat was again filled with blood.
She stirred slightly, and Inuyasha let out a breath he had not known he had been keeping in.
“Kagome, please, you have to wake up,” he pleaded, his tears beginning to run down his cheeks.
“Inu…?” she breathed, hardly audible.
“Oh Kagome, I am so glad you are still alive. I was certain Nara-“ he stopped suddenly. He had almost forgotten about Naraku.
He shifted his weight slightly in order to survey the room. There in the middle of the floor lay Naraku. It looked as though his throat had been ripped out. He brought his claws up to his nose. Beneath his own scent that saturated his claws, he detected that of Naraku. He couldn't help but smile slightly.
“Kagome… Naraku is dead! Please! You have to be okay. All of our hard work has finally paid off! We can finally live happily together!”
Inuyasha saw a small smile cross Kagome's face. His heart lightened tremendously. Then suddenly a jolt of pain shot through his heart.
“That little shit isn't dead yet?” Inuyasha growled, looking over at Naraku who remained motionless. No, this wasn't Naraku. The beast inside him still had a will of its own. The pain was growing so strongly that he knew if it was relieved soon he would die.
“Inu…”
Kagome's words called his attention back to her, “Yes?”
“I heard what Naraku said about the thing in your heart. I-I think I can purify it,” she said, her voice not more than a whisper.
“No, Kagome, you need your strength. I'll be fine,” the pain gritting from his teeth told a different story.
She raised her frail hand to his heart, and smiled at him slightly.
“Kagome, please, I'd rather you live and I die! You have so much to live for!”
“What's tomorrow without you? This is our last goodbye,” she whispered.
“Kagome, please, I can't live without you!” he pleaded.
“I will always be with you; I'm the anchor to your sorrow. There's no end to what I'll do, cause I love you, I love you to death.”
A pink glow emanated from her hand and Inuyasha felt a warmth flow through his previously cold heart. He felt the pain inside him subsiding, and he was regaining his strength. He felt the curtain around his heart shatter.
Kagome's arm fell limply to the stone. Inuyasha watched with great grief as the glow in her eyes slowly faded. Slowly her breathing stopped.
Inuyasha's eyes were pouring tears, and he was sobbing tremendously. After everything they had been through, after the death of Naraku, it ended like this. Kagome lay dead on the floor before him. He'd lost.
He whispered slowly, “What's tomorrow without you? Is this our last goodbye?”
He couldn't live without Kagome. She had been his pride and his joy and she was what gave his life meaning. If he couldn't live with her, he'd die beside her.
“I will always be with you, by the anchor to my sorrow. All I know, or ever knew, is I love you, I love you to death.”
He looked down once again to his beloved. Her skin was pale, her eyes were bland, and her hair was frazzled, but damnit she was his Kagome.
He raised his clawed finger to his throat, and gulped slightly. His finger sliced across his throat in one easy gesture.
As he laid choking and bleeding on the floor, just before his vision went black, he made out footsteps and a flash of silver hair.
The cold onset onto Inuyasha, overtaking his entire body. He closed his eyes and the shadows of death swallowed him whole.
A/N: There will be an epilogue (it's a song that essentially inspired a lot of this story).
