Chapter 1: Cooties

“InuYasha Saitou!”

The seven year old hanyou cringed at the loudness in his mother’s voice----plus the rage that followed. He flattened his small ears against his skull as he dove under the kitchen table. He heard the footsteps of his mother as she entered the kitchen, hands firmly on her lean hips. “InuYasha, I know you’re in here young man. Come out! What did I say about biting people?”

InuYasha made a face. ‘I should come out, Mama will get madder’ InuYasha thought as he slowly crawled out from under the table. “You said I wasn’t supposed to cause I can hurt someone.”

Izayoi Saitou knelt before her son, shaking her head slightly. “InuYasha, don’t do that anymore.” She commanded firmly, flicking his left ear. InuYasha whimpered.

“Sorry, Mama.”

She dragged her son in to her arms, hugging him close. “Now, you’re coming with me to welcome our new neighbors okay?”

“Neighbors?” InuYasha whined, diving under the kitchen table once again. “Why?”

Izayoi rolled her pretty dark, almost violet, eyes as she picked up the tray of chocolate cake with vanilla icing. “Because, they have a son also and you might want to play with him.”

She saw his little hanyou ears twitch in anticipation. “Okay! As long as there’s no girls!” He scrunched up his pristine face, making Izayoi smile gently.

‘Sneaky little pup, I can’t stay mad at you can I, InuYasha?’ She thought silently, watching her son stand besides her in his little jeans and favorite red shirt, his shaggy silver hair falling around him, golden eyes looking up at her widely while his fingers fidgeted with his left ear.

Izayoi picked up the cake slowly after smoothing out her tan skirt and her navy blue tee-shirt. “Honey, how do I look?” She asked, winking at her little boy. InuYasha’s big solemn eyes stared at her for a few seconds before he grinned.

“You’re the prettiest Mama in the whole world!”

Izayoi laughed. “That’s my good boy. Come on.”

InuYasha skipped along behind his mother, following her out the front door of their rather large manor. She walked down the street to the manor next door, pressing the doorbell outside the gates.

“Now, InuYasha, behave baby okay?”

“’Kay” InuYasha replied, eager to meet his new friend. He could smell the excitement Izayoi had, to have friendly neighbors. ‘And I get a friend.’

The gates opened with a loud squeak, allowing Izayoi and InuYasha through before closing once more. InuYasha admired the tall marble columns by the front door that matched the marble fountain spewing water. The deliciously smelling gardens that flowed around the house, flowers that InuYasha had never smelled before. A middle aged-woman opened the door, greeting them with a friendly smile.

“Hello,” She said, opening the door wider. “You must be Izayoi Saitou,”

Izayoi nodded, tucking a strand of her long black hair behind her ear. “Yes, it’s a pleasure to meet you. This is my son, InuYasha.”

The woman looked at InuYasha and before opening his mouth, he twitched his right ear. The woman giggled, ruffling his hair. “Hello” InuYasha mumbled, bowing politely at the woman.

“Oh, he’s an angel. I’m Sakura Higurashi, please come in,” Mrs. Higurashi said, warm chocolate eyes inviting them in as much as her gestures. “Its nice to have some company.”

Izayoi nodded. “Oh yes, indeed. Here, we made this for you. Welcome to our neighborhood.” She said, following Mrs. Higurashi through the lavishly decorated living room and in to the equally modern kitchen.

Sakura took the cake with a brilliant smile. “Oh, thank you! Kagome and Souta absolutely love cakes.” She put the tray down on top of the marble counter before sighing. “Kagome! Souta!” She yelled, gesturing Izayoi to take a seat in the kitchen’s table.

“InuYasha is very excited to have a new friend to play with,” Izayoi stated when InuYasha unceremoniously jumped on to her lap. She smoothed out his hair with a grin as his ears twitched. He heard several loud footsteps running down the stairs and in to the kitchen.

Both children stopped besides their mother, who ruffled the boy’s hair. “Izayoi-sama, this is Kagome, she’s six and this is Souta, he’s three.”

Izayoi tilted her head to the side, oddly surprised, but she recovered quickly, looking up at Sakura Higurashi with a tentative smile. “They’re adorable, Sakura-sama. Go say hi, InuYasha, I’m sure Kagome would love to play with you.”

InuYasha stared at the girl, narrowing his golden eyes at her. Her chubby face turned pink under his scrutiny. She was chubby with chin length black hair and big sapphire eyes. She wore a simple pink dress and no shoes, toying with the hem of her dress. He could smell the nervousness on her. ‘She’s a girl InuYasha made a face, turning to his mother. “She’s a girl! I hate girls! They have cooties!” He concluded, crossing his arms over his chest and stomping his foot on the floor.

“I don’t have cooties!” Kagome Higurashi yelled back, balling her chubby fists at her side.

“Yah-huh!” InuYasha snarled back, glaring at her, though not moving from the spot he had besides his mother.

“InuYasha, be nice!” Izayoi demanded, raising her hand to attempt to flick her son’s right ear. He twitched them away from her. “InuYasha, stop it.”

“If you believe in cooties, you’re a sissy!” Kagome said indignantly, cheeks reddening to match her mother’s sweater.

Kagome! What kind of manners are those?” Mrs. Higurashi frowned at her daughter. “Don’t use that kind of language in this house, missy. Apologize immediately.”

“I’m not a sissy you ugly wench!” InuYasha spat, taking a step towards Kagome. Izayoi spot up abruptly, grabbing InuYasha’s ear and pulling harder than InuYasha would have liked.

“That’s it.” She said, walking towards Kagome, who was at the brink of tears, and pushing InuYasha in front of her. “InuYasha Saitou you apologize right this instant if you know what’s good for you.” Izayoi whispered in a menacing tone that made the hair on InuYasha’s arms spike up.

‘Mama’s mad’ He slumped his shoulders before sighing melodramatically. “I’m sorry,” He started, stuffing his hands in his pockets. “I guess you might not have cooties.”

And?” Izayoi pressed, tapping her shoe against the wooden floor and glancing at Sakura Higurashi with a shake of her head.

And I guess you aren’t that ugly.”

Mrs. Higurashi pushed her daughter to face InuYasha, raising a delicate eyebrow at her. “Young lady?”

Kagome sighed and looked at InuYasha. ‘Boys suck!’ “I’m sorry I called you a sissy.”

“Feh!”

“I think they’ve grown on each other.” Izayoi said, taking a sip of her tea as she watched InuYasha and Kagome play a board game.

“They’re constant bickering will stop in time.”

“Absolutely.” Izayoi replied, watching Mrs. Higurashi’s gentle smile as she watched her daughter pull on the hanyou’s ears.

“His ears are so adorable.”

Izayoi put the delicate china tea cup on the coffee table before nodding. “Oh yes, they’re like little mood radars. When he’s sad he flattens them, when he’s angry they point up, and when he’s happy they twitch----a lot.”

“Does his father have those ears?”

Izayoi laughed. “I wish! InuTaisho has pointy elf-like ears. InuYasha has those ears because he’s hanyou.”

“He’s just the most adorable boy I’ve ever seen.”

“He has his moments,” Izayoi agreed, staring at her son. “Well, this has been a very pleasant afternoon, but I must be going.”

Why!” InuYasha stood up, standing in front of Kagome. “I wanna stay!”

Izayoi stood up, tilting her head to look at the pup. “Your father will be home soon and if you aren’t there to say hi, he’ll be upset. Do you want Daddy upset?”

His ears slumped forward. “No”

“You can come back another time to play with Kagome.”

His ears immediately perked up, golden eyes shinning brightly. “Really? Tomorrow?”

Izayoi laughed. “If that’s okay with Sakura,”

InuYasha rounded his gaze on Kagome’s mother, who made a little ‘aw’ sound before nodding. “Its perfectly okay by me.”

“Alright then, we’ll be back tomorrow. Say goodbye, InuYasha.”

InuYasha stepped towards Mrs. Higurashi. “Bye! Thanks for having us over!”

“You’re quite welcome young man.”

InuYasha turned to Kagome and opened his arms to her. Kagome stood there, dumbfounded by InuYasha’s stance. InuYasha rolled his eyes. “Well don’t just stand there! Gimme a hug!”

Snapping out of her trance, Kagome quickly threw herself in to his arms, wrapping her pudgy arms around his neck and squeezing tightly. “You’re so skinny and short!” She whispered, giggling. He blushed, but snorted.

“Feh! I’m a man! I’m strong!”

Kagome rolled her eyes. “Whatever dog-boy.” She patted the top of his head, since she stood almost four inches taller than him. He growled at her when she bent slightly to give him a quick peck on the cheek.

“Feh! Contaminated wenchÉ” InuYasha mumbled, not noticing when his mother grabbed his hand and walked away with him. Instead, he stared at the faces Kagome was making at him. He stuck his tongue out on her before Mrs. Higurashi closed the front door.

Izayoi laughed softly as they walked back to their manor. The cool wind of the summer afternoon splayed InuYasha’s hair on his face, which was red. “What’s wrong pup?”

“Nothin’” InuYasha responded, kicking a small rock aside.

“Did you like Kagome?”

InuYasha mulled it over for a second. Did he like the girl? She was fun and she was smart at the game they had been playing. He liked her laugh and the sparkle in her eyes. “No”

“Are you sure?”

He sighed and tugged on his mother’s skirt. She stopped to look down at him and waited for him to continue. Playing with Kagome had felt like playing with an old best friend, like he had known her forever. “I guess she doesn’t have as many cooties as the other girls.”

Izayoi laughed as the gates to their home opened. ‘I’ll take that as a yes, InuYasha’ “Good, I’m glad you found a friend. You can play with her tomorrow, I promise.”

“Okay!”

Kagome watched InuYasha and his mother walk back to their house from her bedroom window. She sighed softly. Even though he initially made fun of her, he had stopped. ‘Maybe its cause he’s hanyou?’ The little Miko thought. Truth be told, she liked playing with InuYasha. He was fast and he was really strong. ‘He’s still shorter than me!’ Kagome smiled, biting her lower lip.

His ears were so cute----fuzzy and soft. She liked their constant twitching. ‘He’s my new best friend!’ She sighed as she threw herself on her bed, making it creak under the blow. “InuYasha,” She breathed out his name.

“My best friend”
