Chapter 11

Kagome was fuming. Her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, knuckles turning white, and her face red with inexplicable anger. She doesn't know where she is going, just that she needs to walk away before she 'sits' her mate into his own grave.

She turns around when she hears the voice of her concerned friend.

"Kagome..."

Kagome put the tips of her fingers to her temples and rubs in small circles, trying to prevent the on coming headache. "I swear Sango, I am marrying the most infuriating man ever! What the hell is his problem anyways?" She huffs and crosses her arms as she plops down onto the ground with her back against a tree.

Sango sat down next to her and smiled. "You know Inuyasha, he can be..."

Kagome looks over at Sango and finishes the sentence for her. "Idiotic? Infuriating? Bossy? A big fat jerk!?"

Sango laughed lightly. "I was going to say, hot-headed."

Kagome growled to herself and rolled her eyes. "That too. Hmf! So a little monkey child called me pretty. Is that really so bad? It wasn't like it was Koga! Or you know, a grown man."

Sango shook her head in silent amusement. "Kagome. As much as that child clearly had a little bit of a crush on you, he was trying to upset Inuyasha..."

Kagome looked at Sango incredulously. "Even if that is true, so what? He couldn't have been much more than four or five years old! Inuyasha is so... so... uggghh!" She took a deep breath in and out to try and calm her frazzled nerves. "Then, he tries to tell me what I am allowed to do? Really!?"

Sango sighed softly. "Kagome... how much do you know about Inuyoukai?"

Kagome rolled her eyes. "Enough to know they are full of themselves and like to have pissing contests."

Sango couldn't help the laugh that escaped her parted lips. She shook her head in amusement as she put a hand to Kagome's arm and gave a light squeeze. "As you have seen with Koga, Inuyasha is very possessive of you. Inuyoukai - or in this case - Inuhanyou, are very jealous and possessive. If there is a threat from a male, especially not within his pack, then they act like... well, dogs."

They laughed lightly together before Sango continued.

"Inuyoukai are also very dominant creatures. Inuyasha is half human so he doesn't show it as much as a full demon would, but that doesn't mean it isn't going to come out sometimes. When he ordered you to do something, that was because his demon was enraged and thought his mate would be better off listening to him."

Kagome sighed as she began to calm down, her ire slowly receding. "He was only following his instincts?" At Sango's nod, Kagome groaned and layed her head back against the tree. "Kami. I always tell him how much I like when he allows his instincts to aid him... I'm such a baka."

Sango grabbed Kagome's hand lightly in hers. "You are not a baka. You come from a different world. You also didn't study demons like I did. Inuyasha probably doesn't quite understand everything himself, seeing as he was alone for so many years. He also needs to understand that you are human, he can't just treat you like an Inu bitch."

Kagome's eyes widened slightly as she looked back at Sango. "Is that why he has always called me that? His demon sees me as... his bitch?"

Sango nodded her head and chuckled at the look on Kagome's face. "It is more of a term of endearment for Inuyoukai to call their mate that. Haven't you ever noticed before, that he never calls any other woman that particular nickname?"

Kagome thought hard for a moment and sighed as her shoulders slumped. "I never thought about it. That's not a very nice term for humans, in either of our eras, but I can see how it would be different to an Inu." Kagome stood up and dusted off her clothes, Sango following suit. "I need to speak to my mate, hopefully without the yelling." She rolled her eyes as Sango chuckled. Then they both continued back towards the guys.

When the spell finally let Inuyasha go, he shook his head to get the annoying kitsune off of him. He sat up and crossed his legs, stuffing his hands into the sleeves of his Suikan. His ears are flat against his head and his face is set in an annoyed scowl.

Miroku shook his head and sighed at his baka friend. "You really need to watch your temper, my friend."

Inuyasha glowered and growled at the monk. "Keh! Bitch needs to listen to her mate! You saw that damn monkey flirting with my woman!"

Shippo rolled his eyes as he jumped onto Miroku's shoulder. Miroku chuckled before speaking. "Maybe if you were to work on your communication skills, then you would not have been sat."

Inuyasha growled once again. "That's another thing! She can't sit her mate! Doesn't she know that the man is the dominant one?"

Miroku's amusement vanished as he shook his head in exasperation. "Inuyasha... Kagome is human. Not only that, but a human from a world with different customs. She can't be expected to follow the rules of an Inu. Plus... don't you think after what has happened to her, you shouldn't try and force her to obey your commands?"

Inuyasha's eyes widened as he stared at the monk in shock. "Wh-what? It ain't like that!"

Miroku sighed. "I understand that you don't mean it that way, Inuyasha. But maybe instead of the demands and the yelling, you could speak to her calmly and let her know what is upsetting you."

Inuyasha looked away with a blush on his cheeks. "Keh... women are so complicated."

Shippo rolled his eyes and Miroku chuckled. "Don't I know it, my friend! Here is a saying I overheard Kagome-sama mention that is from her time. 'Happy wife, happy life.' So, if you keep your woman happy, then everybody wins." His perverted grin returned. "And if you do whatever it is you did this morning, she is sure to never sit you again."

Inuyasha growled as his blush intensified. Shippo covered his ears and yelled, "I'm just a kid! I'm too young for this!"

They all turned when they heard Kagome's voice. "Too young for what?"

Sango narrowed her eyes. "Did the Houshi say something inappropriate?"

Shippo nodded his head vigorously and ran to jump on Kagome's shoulder. "Miroku was telling Inuyasha to do what he did in the tree and you won't ever sit him again!"

Sango and Kagome's eyes widened before they both narrowed them towards their respective men. Miroku stood up and dusted off his robes before chuckling quietly and looking sheepish. Inuyasha stood and blushed but was the first to speak.

"I ain't do anythin' wrong! The damn pervert said it, not me!"

Kagome only sighed and shook her head. She lifted Shippo off of her shoulder and handed him to Sango before walking up to her mate. She grabbed his hand and began to walk away before calling back to her friends.

"We'll be back soon. I need to speak to my mate."

Their friends easily agreed, hoping the couple will be in a better mood by the time they return.

Inuyasha and Kagome walked quietly for a few minutes, until they found a secluded area to speak without nosy monks and kitsunes. Kagome turned towards him with her back up against a tree and her eyes downcast. They both took a deep breath in and spoke at the same time.

"I'm sorry, Inuyasha." "I'm sorry, Kagome."

Both of their heads shot up to lock eyes with the other. Kagome smiled feintly. "We both overreacted. Sometimes I forget that you have different instincts than humans."

Inuyasha stepped closer to her and rubbed circles on the back of her hand. "I... My demon is hard to ignore sometimes... I ain't gonna force ya to do anythin' though."

Kagome smiled up at him as she raised her hands and wrapped them around his neck. "I don't like fighting."

Inuyasha stepped closer and grinned, showing off a fang. "Me neither."

Kagome pulled his face closer by the back of the neck, their lips just a breath apart. "So, we're good?"

Inuyasha growled lightly. "More than good."

Kagome's eyes fluttered shut as she gave him the feintest brush of her lips. "Good..."

When they finally made it back to the others, they made some lame excuse about having to talk longer then they had initially thought. They began to walk in the direction of Kaede's village, eyes open to finding another shard, but not getting their hopes up. Kirara jumped onto Sango's shoulder, curling up for a short nap. After about fifteen more minutes, Kagome spoke.

"Inuyasha?"

"Yeah, 'Gome?"

"How far away is Jinenji's?"

"Uh... If we walk, about three days. If we run and use Kirara, we can get there by tomorrow night. Why?"

Kagome shrugged her shoulders. "It's been a while since we saw him and I thought maybe we could give him a visit."

Inuyasha looked to his left and studied his mate closely. He thought about it for a moment and decided it might be a good thing for her. There are no leads on any shards and she could use another friend who they trust.

"Keh, we can go if ya want."

Kagome smiled up at him and nodded her head before looking at the others. "Are you guys okay with that?"

"Hai, Kagome. That sounds like a good idea."

Miroku nodded his head. "I agree. You have spoken highly of this hanyou, so I would be so inclined to meet him as well."

Kagome smiled happily as she climbed onto Inuyasha's back and the other humans got atop of Kirara's. The Inutachi immediately set out towards Jinenji's home.

A few hours go by and a few pesky demons slayed, before they found a suitable place for camp. Miroku and Inuyasha grabbed the wood, Shippo started the fire and then Kagome helped Sango get the noodles prepared.

When they were all sitting down around the fire and eating dinner, Kagome remembered one of the things she thought about earlier that day. She turned to Inuyasha and reached towards his Kotodama. She fingered it lightly, elicitating a questionable look from the hanyou.

"What are ya doin'?

"I... I want to take this off of you."

All eyes were on them now, having not expected something like that. Inuyasha's eyes widened and immediately his hands went to her wrists as she grasped his rosary with both hands.

She had sat her Ramen down and was about to lift the damned thing off of his head when he stopped her.

"Inuyasha?"

He looked panicked for some reason. His eyes wide and frightened, his ears plastered to his head and his hands holding onto her wrists tightly.

"Leave it."

Now everyone is watching them as if they are some sort of soap opera. Slowly spooning their noodles into their mouths, eyes unblinking so they don't miss a thing and looking back and forth between the Miko and hanyou.

Inuyasha growled. "I don't care. Leave it!"

"B-But you don't need it! You're my mate and my future husband. I will not have this control over you." She looked away from his gaze, hers turning sad. "I know what it's like to lose all control." She locked eyes with his again. "I won't do that to you... not anymore."

Inuyasha sighed as he took her hands and held them between their bodies. "Then just don't say that word."

"Why do you want to keep it?"

Inuyasha glanced at the others, his cheeks and the tips of his ears pinking slightly, then looked back down at her. "I just... what 'bout the times it saved my ass? Or when I went full demon? It has done good too, ya know."

What he didn't say in front of the others is that he feels like it gives him and Kagome a deeper connection, basically tying them together with her mark on him.

Kagome sighed. "I... okay... but I promise to not use it in anger. Only when it's completely necessary."

Inuyasha smiled at her as he nodded his head in agreement.

After the little anticlimactic show was finished, everyone went back to their meals and finished quietly. They set up their separate sleeping spots and then said their goodnights before going to bed.

After Kagome had taken her night time medicine, Inuyasha grabbed her and Shippo, along with Foxy because the little kitsune had made the argument, "Foxy would be lonely without me." Then the three of them settled up in a thick branch of a nearby tree.

Kagome curled up in Inuyasha's arms with Shippo snuggled into her stomach holding his stuffed fox in his little grasp. Inuyasha made sure to give his fiancé a kiss goodnight and Kagome kissed Shippo on the top of the head. Shortly thereafter, Kagome and Shippo were passed out cold while Inuyasha lightly dozed, never one to allow himself to leave Kagome and the others unprotected.

Kagome was walking from Kaede's village towards the well with Inuyasha by her side. She's holding his clawed hand in her own and just enjoying the beautiful day, when suddenly the sun had disappeared and the area around them had became dark and eerie.

She grasped his arm tightly as she looked around in confusion, an unpresidented fear shooting up her spine. She could hear Inuyasha's growl as he wrapped her up in his embrace.

"Kagome... run to the well."

She hugged him tensely and shook her head. "No! I'm not leaving you."

He pulled back and cupped her cheeks, the air around them becoming thick with a green fog. "You have to go. I can smell him. It's -"

He was cut off by a tentacle piercing through his stomach. Kagome's eyes widened as tears began to fall. Inuyasha had blood flowing from his mouth and nose as he stumbled back and fell to his knees.

"K-Kag... G-Go... Nar -"

Another tentacle pierced straight through his heart and he fully fell to the ground, eyes open and blood pooling around his unmoving form.

"No..." Kagome slumped down onto her knees in front of him, cupping his face as her tears stained his cheeks. "No!"

"Kukuku... So, the mutt is dead, is he? No one to save you from me this time."

Kagome wrapped her arms around Inuyasha's body and cried helplessly. "You. Fucking. Bastard! "

She stood and turned towards the voice. The voice that haunts her every nightmare and her worst memories. She saw him there, Naraku, the bane of her existence. The man who raped her countless times, made her forget her friends and hate the love of her life. The man who had just murdered her mate in cold blood. The man she will never allow to touch her again.

She pulled an arrow from her quiver and noched it, aiming it directly at the evil hanyous chest.

"Kukuku. Do you really believe you can defeat me?"

Tears streaming down her face, reiki sizzling around her body and an arrow pointing at his heart. She smiled dangerously. "Yes." Was all she said before she let the arrow fly.

She watched as Naraku was engulfed within her aura, his body disintegrating and that smug smirk changing into a cry of fury.

Naraku was finally dead.

But so is she.

She turned to her fallen love and dropped to her knees before him once again. She stroked his cheek as she cried for the final time.

"I can't live without you... so I choose to die with you. I'll see you soon, my love."

She grabbed an arrow and held it up to her throat, and without a second thought, she ended it. All of her pain and suffering will finally end. The life she wanted is no longer a possibility with the man she loves gone. She will see him in the next life, because this one is not one she wants to live in anymore.

Not without him.

Within a second, she fell unceremoniously on top of him and everything went black...

"Inuyasha!" Kagome yelled in fright as she woke up, still in the tree and curled against her mate.

She turned to face him, his hands already cupping her cheeks and his lips moving but she doesn't comprehend a word. Shippo is on his shoulder, having dodged a shock of reiki that had escaped her in her sleep.

Kagome cried and sobbed as she threw her arms around his neck, not paying attention to anything but him. He is here, he is alive, and they are together.

She pulled back and kissed him with a ferocity he has never seen from her before, but he lets her do as she pleases. His mate is obviously distraught and in need of him. He wraps his arms around her back and kisses her with as much ferver as she is kissing him.

Shippo is blushing, but the fact that he can smell her tears and anxiety is overwhelming the PDA in front of him. He looks away and decided to wait until they were finished being gross.

Kagome pulled back from his lips and holds his head in her hands. She stares into his eyes. His alive eyes and more tears fall unbidden from hers.

He strokes her hair lovingly as he rests his forehead to hers. "You never will Kagome. I promise."

Kagome shook her head vigorously as she looks back into his golden gaze. "You... You can't promise that. Wh-What if -"

She was cut off by his lips on hers and when he pulled away, he wiped the tears from her face. "Kagome... I never cared about living before I met you and I still survived. You gave me a reason to live now, so why would anything be able to kill me? I ain't goin' anywhere, koibito. I promise."

Kagome took a few deep breaths in and out, and nodded her head. "I just... I want this to be over. I want him gone so we can live our lives happily."

"We will. I swear to you, that bastard is dead the next time we see him. I ain't gonna let him pull another stupid stunt again." When she nodded, he looked at the sun placement and then back at her. "Do ya wanna sleep for a little longer?"

Kagome immediately shook her head and reached for Shippo who happily jumped into her arms. She hugged her kit close and sighed, tears still burning her eyelids.

"I think I just want to eat something and head back out towards Jinenji's."

Inuyasha nodded his head in understanding as he held onto her and dropped the three of them to the ground. Kagome noticed her other friends have awoken, making her feel even worse than before

"I'm sorry if I woke you guys up..."

"Nonsense, Kagome-sama. Now we can have a good head start on our journey."

Sango agreed with a warm smile. "Hai. I'll heat the water for the noodles. You just relax Kagome, alright?"

Kagome smiled weakly and nodded. She held onto Inuyasha's arm as if she was afraid he would disappear at any second. Inuyasha allowed her to use him for support, hoping she will feel better soon. He hates to see her so sad and scared. He knows that she is strong and he swears that Naraku won't live past their next encounter.

After the Inutachi finished eating and packing up, they headed back out. Kagome is holding as tightly as she dared to Inuyasha's shoulders as she rides his back. That nightmare was the worst one yet and it keeps replaying over and over again within her mind.

She is just getting so tired. Tired of living with the constant fear that Naraku will come back for her. But now that fear extends to him killing Inuyasha in cold blood. She remembers the feeling of watching his blood ooze out from his body, his eyes unblinking and his form unmoving. She closed her eyes as tears began to form and rested her face into the back of his neck.

Inuyasha gave Kagome's thighs a little squeeze for comfort as he ran through the trees. He doesn't know what she dreamt about, but he does know it was bad enough for her powers to come out while asleep. Luckily Shippo had dodged it and it wasn't enough to do much more then burn himself a little, but he's beginning to worry for his mate even more than before. He just hopes that the future medicine she started taking begins to work soon.

The group stopped a few times throughout the day. They stopped for lunch and a few bathroom breaks before finally arriving at their destination late in the evening. The sun wasn't quite down yet, so they are hoping they won't be intruding on Jinenji and his mother.

Inuyasha let Kagome off of his back, but she clung to his arm even harder then before. Obviously still afraid of whatever dream had plagued her last night.

Sango and Miroku hopped off of Kirara, the nekomata transforming back and landing on the taijiya's shoudler. Shippo is sitting on Kagome's.

As they approached Jinenji's home, an old woman holding a plank of wood above her head ran outside yelling. "Don't you heathens mess with me! I'll kill - oh! Hello there Kagome, Inuyasha. What are you youngins doing here?"

Jinenji peaked out of the front entrance to the hut and gave a small smile. "Kagome..."

Kagome smiled weakly as they all approached the old woman and her son. "Hi Jinenji, I'm hoping we aren't intruding on you."

Jinenji's mother dropped the plank and waved off their concerns. "Nonsense! Come in, all of you. We have tea." She turned and went back inside as Jinenji backed up to give them room to enter. She cleared off some space for the others to sit around where they please.

Inuyasha pushed the reed mat aside to assist Kagome in first and then followed close behind. The others went inside right after. They all sat pretty close to each other, seeing as the space is kind of small, but they made it work.

Kagome had Inuyasha sit behind her with her back leaned up against his chest and his arms wrapped around her torso. Sango sat to their right with Miroku to hers, Kirara in Sango's lap and Shippo in Kagome's. Jinenji's mother was up grabbing everyone tea while Jinenji was across from Kagome and Inuyasha.

When everyone was situated with their hot beverage and the old woman sat next to her son, Kagome spoke.

"I'm hoping this is not a bad time. I just thought while we were nearby, we could visit."

Jinenji nodded. "You are always welcome, Kagome. You and your friends."

Kagome smiled warmly and then turned to the old woman when she began to speak. "So, you and the hanyou with the cute ears seem to be a lot closer than the last time we saw each other."

Kagome blushed while Inuyasha growled at the 'cute ear' comment. "Hai. Inuyasha is my true mate and we will be getting married."

"And what the hell is with you humans and my ears!?"

Kagome and the other humans laughed. The young Miko turned her head to gaze at her mate with a twinkle in her eye. She reached up and tweaked his ear, giggling when it flicked away from her touch.

"Oh, lighten up dog-boy. They are adorable."

Inuyasha growled once again. "Men aren't adorable!"

Kagome shook her head in amusement as she layed back against his chest once again. "You're handsome too."

This caused him to blush crimson and mumble a small, "keh."

The old woman smiled fondly, thinking about her late husband. "Well, I think it's wonderful. I remember the feeling of being young and in love like it was just yesterday."

Jinenji blushed as he tentatively spoke up. "How long have you been mated?"

Kagome's cheeks pinked slightly. "Uh... We haven't completed the bond yet. We are waiting until after we defeat Naraku."

"S-Sorry, Kagome. You both just smell a lot like each other."

Kagome's blush intensified. "Uhm... That's because..."

Inuyasha rolled his eyes. "I have been carryin' the lazy wench everywhere."

Miroku chuckled into his hand as all three women glowered at the Inuhanyou.

"What!?"

The old woman spoke with a hint of anger to her voice. "I don't know what you did to deserve this sweet girl, but if I were you, I'd work on your manners!"

Inuyasha growled. "I got tons of manners!"

Kagome sighed and shook her head. "You are like talking to a brick wall, Inuyasha." He only growled as he rested his chin on the top of her head, holding her tighter in his arms.

Jinenji decided to change the subject for his friend. "Would you want to take some herbs with you? I have plenty for different poisons and healing that may help in your battle."

Kagome smiled happily. "That would be wonderful! Thank you, Jinenji."

The horse hanyou quickly averted his gaze with a blush to his face. "Y-You're welcome, Kagome..."

They spent the next couple of hours talking about their lives and how they plan to live once Naraku is defeated. They obviously didn't mention any of the more intimate details of what had happend recently, but they did say it has become more urgent and they are trying to defeat him in the next few months.

Jinenji and his mother did offer them to stay the night under a roof, but they politely declined. They should be heading back towards Kaede's village and they are perfectly happy under the stars. Kagome gladly accepted Jinenji's herbs and placed them safely in her medical kit inside of her bag.

By the time they left, it was very late, so they walked for about an hour until they found a nice place to make camp.

They continued with their nightly routine of dinner and then retiring to their respective places for sleep. Kagome took her anxiety, depression and PTSD medication before having Inuyasha take her and Shippo up on a bough of the nearest tree. Miroku climbed inside of his own sleeping bag, Sango a safe distance from him with Kirara curled up with her.

Kagome cuddled into Inuyasha's chest after a goodnight kiss, with Shippo snuggled into her with his stuffed fox. Inuyasha watched as his beautiful mate fell sleep, hoping that she can get through the night without any bad dreams.
