Chapter 26
Soon, her three girlfriends of this era were at the door with matching smiles on their faces. "Kagome!"
Kagome smiled as she took in her friends Halloween outfits. They are dressed as The Chipettes; the female chipmunks from Alvin and the Chipmunks. Kagome stifled an amused laugh as she took in each individual outfit.
Eri is dressed as Brittany; a light pink shirt, a hot pink open jacket with a matching pink skirt and a pink and black loose necktie. Yuka is dressed as Elenour; a light green undershirt and matching skirt along with a dark green sweater over top. Ayumi is dressed as Jeanette; a jean jacket over top of a light pink blouse, a purple plaid skirt, and purple glasses. All three of them are wearing small chipmunk ears and fluffy tails sticking out from their skirts.
Kagome giggled as she grabbed Inuyasha's hand and pulled him inside as her friends made room for them to enter. She looked at the girls and her smile widened. "Love the costumes."
The girls giggled together and Yuka spoke up. "You too! A cat and a dog?"
Kagome laughed when she heard Inuyasha's slight growl, but ignored it as she answered. "Sorta. We're a couple of hanyou. You know, from the Sengoku Jidai." She shrugged her shoulders as if she wasn't telling them how true that statement really was.
Ayumi gave them each a knowing look, but only smiled along with the other girls as they walked into the living room where the party had already begun.
Kagome unconsciously held onto Inuyasha's hand tighter as they made it to the room where a bunch of teenagers between the age of fifteen and eighteen were hanging out in their Halloween costumes. Everyone was chatting, eating candy, and playing games. Kagome followed her friends to the corner where three boys are standing and talking.
She immediately recognized Hojo, but she didn't know who the other two were. She held Inuyasha's hand tighter when he began to growl once again, obviously not enjoying the fact that they are getting closer to what his demon perceives as a potential rival.
When they made it to the small group, Ayumi blushed as she grabbed Hojo's hand and stood beside him. Eri did the same with the boy next to Hojo, and Yuka with the third boy.
Now that they were right in front of them, Kagome realized with amusement, that the boys are dressed respectively to match the girls' outfits. Hojo is dressed as Simon; just a royal blue sweater, jeans and a pair of glasses. The boy with Eri is dressed as Alvin; crimson red sweater with a big yellow A on it and jeans. The boy with Yuka is dressed as Theodore; just a green sweater with jeans. The main thing that amuses Kagome is the fact that they are also wearing fake chipmunk ears and bushy tails.
She hid her amusement the best she could as she looked to the blushing Hojo and smiled at him. "Hojo-kun. It's good to see you again." She discreetly elbowed Inuyasha when he let out another small growl of disapproval.
Hojo put an arm around Ayumi's waist as a way to explain his brand new relationship without the use of words. "It's good to see you too, Higurashi." He turned to the hanyou and gave him a fake smile, not because he doesn't like the guy, but he just doesn't really know him and he wants Kagome to be treated well. "And uh, Inuyasha right?"
Inuyasha put his own arm around his woman and bit back a growl. "Keh."
Kagome rolled her eyes, but decided to make the conversation a little more upbeat and less awkward. She looked at her girlfriends and grinned as she held her left hand out, expecting their reactions before it even happened.
Ayumi, Eri, and Yuka all squealed, making Inuyasha's ears flatten to his skull, and the other guys wince at the high pitched sound. The girls were all examining the diamond on her finger with avid interest, asking different questions about how long they have been engaged and when they will be getting married and how she got her mom's permission and so on. The other three guys ended up sneaking away from the girls to go to the kitchen for some drinks and snacks, but Inuyasha stayed put. There is no way he is leaving his mate alone in a house full of weird humans.
"It's beautiful!" Exclaimed Ayumi. "I'm so jealous!"
"I can't believe you're actually tying the knot with the bad boy, Kagome." Eri spoke next.
Yuka looked between all of them before making her own judgement. "You think you're ready? You're so young! What if you want to explore a little more?"
Kagome put her arms around Inuyasha's waist to keep him from doing or saying anything stupid as she smiled, pretending it wasn't as strained as it really was, and spoke calmly but seriously. "I couldn't be more sure about anything. I love him and he loves me."
Ayumi smiled at Kagome and Inuyasha, glad that they seem to both be in a better place than the last time she saw them. Eri and Yuka shared a look that neither Inuyasha nor Kagome truly picked up on, but then Yuka tentatively spoke up.
"Can we uh, speak with you for a moment? ... Alone?"
Kagome looked up at Inuyasha, noticing his scowl, but gave him a reassuring smile. She leaned up and kissed him lightly on the cheek before pulling from his grasp and nodding towards her friends. Inuyasha growled lightly and was about to follow when Ayumi's hand on his arm stopped him, making him cock and eyebrow at her.
"They aren't going to hurt her. She'll be okay."
Inuyasha's ears flattened as he looked over at Kagome and those two girls speaking in hushed tones. He rolled his eyes and pointed his ears in their direction. Ayumi smiled up at his ears, watching as he obviously listens in on the conversation. She shakes her head in amusement as she goes to the kitchen to find Hojo.
Kagome sighed as she was practically dragged to the corner of the room, her heart beating wildly every time she nearly bumped into someone she doesn't know. She didn't realize just how uncomfortable she would feel in a setting like this, having not had the chance in a very long time. She took a deep breath in to calm her nerves as her friends began to chastise her on her decisions.
Yuka and Eri both crossed their arms as they looked at her expectently. Kagome had to hold back an eye roll. "What?"
Eri glanced over at Inuyasha before looking back at Kagome. Before she could think better of it, she blurted out what her and Yuka were both thinking. "Are you pregnant?"
Kagome's mouth instantly went agape as she just stared back in absolute shock. For some reason, that question did not even make itself into her mind as one of the things people may think of her. She started to breathe in a little heavier, remembering all those weeks ago when she was terrified of being pregnant with Naraku's child.
Suddenly, she was angry. How dare they just assume that? Does everyone just assume she is some whore who sleeps around? And even if she and Inuyasha did have sex, it wouldn't be any of their damn business! They love each other, it isn't like she's having multiple love affairs. She scoffed as she held her fists at her sides and glared at the girl who dared even think of such a thing.
"Seriously? You think I'm marrying Inuyasha because of pregnancy? We're getting married in six months! I'd be a freaking whale by then! How could you guys think such a thing?" She knew she was rambling. She knew she had tears in her eyes. But damn it, she couldn't bring herself to care. She kept her glare unwavering as they tried to reason with her.
Yuka spoke up carefully as to not upset her further. "I'm sorry, Kagome. It's just... didn't he cheat on you like a million times? What if the other woman is pregnant? What would you do then?"
Kagome's reiki flared around her, her emotions getting the better of her. Before she could even think to respond however, Inuyasha was at her side and she was pulled into his warm embrace.
Inuyasha heard what the idiot girls had accused her of and then what they said about him. Honestly, he doesn't give a shit what they may think of him, but thinking so little of his mate isn't going to slide. He wrapped his arms around her, Kagome instantly putting her arms around his waist and her face in his chest, and he turned to the surprised looking girls and growled low in his throat.
"If you were smart, you'd think twice before sayin' anythin' else."
Yuka and Eri both stammered out apologies, watching as Inuyasha narrowed his eyes at them. After a moment, Kagome sniffled and took a deep breath in before turning and looking at them both. She can see that they really feel bad about what they insinuated, so she nodded at them before speaking.
"Let's just forget about it, okay? Inuyasha and I are getting married because we love each other and nothing more is going on."
Eri and Yuka both nodded, looking embarrassed for their obvious screw up. Kagome then felt her own embarrassment at blowing up at them like that. She just didn't expect that her friends would think such a thing about her. It made her think of some things she had pushed into the back of her mind. Things that she thought she wouldn't have to think about ever again because the man that caused it is long gone. She didn't realize she started to tremble until Inuyasha turned her around to face him fully. She watched as her two friends left to go somewhere else throughout the party, obviously leaving her and Inuyasha to talk alone.
"Kagome?"
She locked eyes with him and blushed at the way she kind of zoned out. "S-sorry. I uh... don't know what came over me."
Inuyasha's ear twitched and he looked around at all the unfamiliar sounds, people, smells, just everything. Then he looked back down at his mate. "If you ain't comfortable, we can go."
Kagome was quick to shake her head. She wanted to feel like a normal teenager and go to a Halloween party like one. She wanted to eat some of the white chocolate covered pretzel sticks that are made to look like ghosts, and have some of the jello that is in the shape of a brain. She wanted to smile and laugh with her friends and just not think about the past as she did so.
She just didn't realize that she had bottled everything up.
She was fine. She is fine.
So what the hell happened to make her practically hyperventilate?
She shook her head free of those thoughts and smiled up at Inuyasha. "I'm sorry. Let's just go get some candy. You said you wanted to try chocolate, right?"
Inuyasha grabbed her hand and rubbed small circles along her knuckles. He watched her closely for a moment, using his nose to decipher all of her battling emotions. He furrowed his eye brows, but then she gave him a pleading look and he caved. He sighed and nodded his head, giving a small smirk when she smiled widely and started dragging him through the house and towards where the small group of teenagers went a moment prior.
When they made it into the kitchen where the three boys and three girls were gathered around a bowl of punch that had been died green for the holiday, Kagome gave them what she hoped was perceived as a very real smile. "Hey guys."
They all said their hellos and then Yuka held the hand of the boy she was with and gave Kagome a small smile. "This is Chikao. We went on a few dates before today."
Kagome nodded and smiled in greeting before Eri introduced the boy she is also with.
"This is my boyfriend, Riku. We've been going out for about a month now."
Kagome smiled and introduced herself to both of them, and was then told that they are in the same classes as Hojo. The eight of them continued to talk amicably, (Inuyasha kind of grunted and blushed throughout most of the conversations), for a while, then Kagome was taken aback by what appears to be alcohol handed to her by Eri.
She looked down at the bottle in her hand and up at the girl in front of her and she didn't know what to say or do. She's never drank a drop of alcohol in her life, and she definitely didn't want to start now. Not only did she feel uncomfortable with that to begin with, but she knows it isn't okay to drink while on the types of medications she is currently taking. She looked up at her friend who started to drink her own drink, then looked over at the others. All of them were drinking except for her, Inuyasha, Ayumi, and Hojo. She noticed that Ayumi seemed just as uncomfortable as she did with the whole concept of alcohol.
Before she could really think of a way out of it without seeming weird, Inuyasha snatched it out of her hands and she turned to watch him sniff at it before he growled and glowered at the girl who handed it to her.
"What the fuck? This is alcohol."
Eri looked at Inuyasha like he had two heads. "So? It's not that big of a deal. We're just hanging out."
Kagome gulped as she grabbed on Inuyasha's sleeve to keep him grounded... or was it to keep herself grounded? She didn't really know, she just knew that she didn't feel as ready to be out in the real world as she thought she was.
Inuyasha slammed the drink down on the counter top and kept his glare firmly in place. "She ain't drinkin' that."
Yuka, Eri and the two guys who were drinking stopped what they were doing to watch the scene unfold. Yuka spoke up before the others had a chance. "I thought you were some kind of bad boy. What's wrong with a drink every now and then?"
Kagome could feel her face heat up, having not expected the night to start bad and turn out worse, but it had and now she is completely stuck in place. She took a deep breath in to calm her raging heart beat and squeezed his arm in a way of comfort before speaking up for herself.
"Guys, I just don't drink. It's fine, really. Inuyasha is just protecting me."
Eri eyed the hanyou up and down before locking her eyes back with Kagome. "He seems more controlling than protecting."
Maybe coming was a mistake. Maybe she should have stayed hidden away and not tried to be a normal teenager. Maybe she should have just stayed in the Sengoku Jidai where she had friends who understood her.
Maybe she should sit down before she passes out from lack of oxygen.
Ayumi noticed Kagome began to breathe in and out much faster than she should have, and knew right away what was happening. She let go of Hojo's hand and stepped forward, ignoring the obvious growl from the hanyou and took Kagome's free hand in hers. She saw Kagome's eyes snap over to hers and she nodded her head in understanding. It was all just a bit too much too fast. She silently began to walk her friend and fiancé over to an empty spot on the couch in the living room. When they made it there, she motioned for Inuyasha to sit on Kagome's left side, while she sat on her right. They both held onto one of her hands and gave her silent support as she began to calm herself.
Her heart was racing, her mind was racing, her legs were bouncing, her head was pounding. Why was she freaking out? Her friends always were a bit invasive. Why is now any different? Why couldn't she let it go? Why did she feel weird about turning down alcohol? Was she just afraid of being accused of pregnancy again, or was it something else?
She really has changed hasn't she?
The old Kagome would have just said no thanks and gone about the party like normal. The old Kagome wouldn't have taken offense, or at least not outwardly taken offense. The old Kagome wouldn't be hyperventilating with her fiancé and friend holding onto her hands and trying to keep her calm from such a minor inconvenience.
The old Kagome wasn't so frail.
She shook her head and closed her eyes tight, taking slow deep breaths until she finally calmed down enough to breathe like a normal human being. She opened her eyes back up and relaxed her grips on their hands. She looked down at her lap and felt the tears burning behind her eyelids.
"I'm sorry. I thought..." She sighed.
Inuyasha put his right arm around her waist, having Kagome lean her head on his shoulder. Ayumi kept her hand in Kagome's and spoke up calmly and reassuringly.
"You don't need to apologize Kagome. It's perfecty fine to not be fine every now and then." Kagome turned and looked into Ayumi's eyes. Ayumi smiled slightly and squeezed her friend's hand. "I understand."
Kagome's lip trembled as she reached both arms over to hug Ayumi around the neck. A few rogue tears fell, but she didn't allow more than that.
How could she have forgotten that someone on this side of the well does understand?
°•°•°
About an hour of just sitting on the couch, eating candy and talking amongst the four of them, (Hojo had joined them shortly after their talk), Inuyasha's ear twitched and he turned to look towards the back of the house. He raised his nose to sniff the air discreetly, knowing not to allow his instincts to be seen by these humans, but he couldn't prevent the small snarl from breaking free.
Kagome turned from her conversation with Ayumi when she heard Inuyasha's growl. She saw his ears turned towards the back of the house as he turned and sniffed. She cocked her head to the side, then tried to listen for whatever caught her finacé's attention. When she didn't catch anything out of the ordinary, she reached over and grabbed his hand. When he quickly turned to look at her, she gave him a quizzical look.
"What's wrong?"
Inuyasha shrugged his shoulders, thinking that maybe he was just hearing things, but then he heard it again.
"No... Please just stop it!"
He couldn't prevent the growl as he jumped up and pushed through all the noisy and drunk kids to head towards the sounds he now knows he heard.
Kagome was confused, but knew that look all too well. Inuyasha definitely heard something that couldn't be good, going off his facial expression and the growl that tore free from deep within his chest. She quickly said she'll be right back to her other friends and stood to follow him towards the back of the house. She noticed they were heading down a long hallway, and then saw him going towards the bedroom at the end of the hall.
The closer they got, the quieter the party got, the more she could hear coming from the room.
She froze. Eyes wide. Heart pounding. Breath quickening. Anxiety raising.
"Tōru, stop!"
Her breathing quickened even further as flashes of the past went through her mind.
"Please... No..."
Her feet were planted to the ground as the girl started to cry behind the closed door that Inuyasha was about to break down.
"No! Tōru! I don't -" Her voice was cut off by something, but Kagome still couldn't move. All she could think about was him.
"Please... Not this.. Please.."
"No... I don't want you... I'll never want you."
"No!"
Suddenly her feet moved before her mind caught up with it. She ran into the room that Inuyasha had just barged into. Inuyasha already had the boy by the throat pinned against the wall on the other side of the room. The boys pants were at his ankles, but she noticed that his boxers were still on. That gave her a little bit of relief. Then she turned to the curled up girl on the bed who's clothes were in disarray and tears were streaming down her face.
Kagome approached slowly as to not spook her, then crouched down on the floor by the bed. "Hey..."
The girl's eyes shot open and locked onto Kagome's immediately. She let out a small breath of relief followed by a sob as she quickly wrapped her arms around the Miko. Kagome returned the hug eagerly, wanting to give this girl as much comfort as she could. She hadn't noticed the tears that escaped her own eyes as the unknown girl cried into her shoulder.
Kagome stroked the girl's black hair softly, listening as her loud sobs lowered to sniffles and hiccups, then she saw that Inuyasha still had the boy pinned to the wall and he was obviously threatening him.
Inuyasha stared the human down, his claws over the kid's throat and his fangs bared menacingly. "Give me one good reason why I don't kill you right now."
The kid was about to piss himself. He's drunk and scared of the crazy man in front of him, his body dangling above the floor. "I didn't do nothin'! Leave me the fuck alone!" He voice cut to a cough as Inuyasha squeezed his throat just a little tighter.
Kagome knew what was about to happen if she didn't stop it. There would be a much bigger crime scene than there already was. She pulled back from the girl and tried to reassure her that she would be back in a minute. The girl nodded as she fixed her clothes back to normal and stared down into her lap.
Kagome approached Inuyasha and put a hand to his arm. He turned to look at her, his eyes red rimmed and his fangs protruding over his lip. "Inuyasha. We need to call the cops, and let them handle it."
He remembers what the 'cops' are and what they do from when she explained why he shouldn't hit random people no matter how mad he got. But this situation feels different. This kid should die from what he almost did to the girl. He growled and clenched his fist harder over the idiots throat.
"How 'bout I chop the baka's dick off and shove it down his throat!?"
The boy looked to be about to faint, whether it's from loss of oxygen or being terrified to death, Kagome didn't know, but she does know that she can't allow Inuyasha to kill him... or castrate him.
She gave his arm another squeeze. "Inuyasha." When he turned back to her, she continued. "As much as this jerk may deserve it, you can't do that. Come on, let's head outside and take him to the authorities." She turned to the sniffling girl and bit her lip nervously. She knows they can't really do anything without the victims word, so she walked back over to the girl and sat down next to her on the bed.
"I'm Kagome, by the way."
The girl wiped her tears away on the back of her hand before she wrapped her arms around her body, not making eye contact, but responding with her own name. "I'm... Mai..."
Kagome turned to see Inuyasha finally letting the kid onto his own two feet before he yelled at the kid to pull his damn pants up, then he took him by his wrists and held them behind his back. She turned back to Mai and lightly put her hand overtop hers. "Do you want us to get the police involved? They can make sure he doesn't do this to anyone else."
Mai looked over and saw Tōru being restrained roughly by a handsome boy she has never seen before, then she looked back at Kagome. She nodded weakly before Kagome helped her to stand and the four of them walked quietly throughout the party and out the front door.
They were stopped by Kagome's three friends just outside the front door and they looked at them worriedly. Ayumi recognized the signs right away, tearing up as she stepped forward and put a comforting hand on Mai's arm.
Eri looked between them all and asked the question that no one else seemed to want to. "What happened?"
Kagome looked at Mai, waiting to see if she wanted to say anything, and when the scared girl only curled into herself further, she answered. "Nothing to be worried about. We're going to go for a little bit, okay?"
The girls seemed to take the hint that something serious must have happened and knew when not to overstep, so they nodded their heads and watched as they began to walk away.
Kagome knew where the police station was and she didn't want to call them because she didn't want to get her friends into trouble for underage drinking. She sighed as they walked down the street, Ayumi following beside the girls and Inuyasha growling every time the idiot tried to get out of his strong hold.
"Quit it! Ya ain't stronger than me, idiot."
"I didn't do nothin' the bitch didn't want!" Said idiot slurred out, making Mai hold back more tears.
Kagome wrapped her right arm around Mai's shoulders and held her close as they got closer to the police station. It is only a few blocks away, so the walk shouldn't take too much longer. Even with a drunk teenager being hauled by an irate hanyou, and three girls trecking in front of them.
They turned the final corner and came upon the police station; all three girls took deep breaths in before Ayumi opened the door for the others. Kagome kept her arm around Mai as they walked in, and Inuyasha kept his hands tight around the idiot's wrists, making him whine like the little bitch he is.
When they entered, they were immediately confronted by a female police officer. "May I help you kids?"
Inuyasha growled and shoved the boy forward, but keeping him in his hold. "This idiot tried to rape that girl."
Kagome cringed at his not so filtered word choice, but it did get the point across. She held onto Mai's shoulders tighter as the girl winced and looked down at the floor, obviously embarrassed and uncomfortable.
The police officer looked between the lot of them, coming to the conclusion that they were obviously at some Halloween event. She nodded her head in understanding as she spoke into the radio that was on her hip, before putting it back in place. She stepped close to the three girls and introduced herself.
"I am officer Aya." She turned to see her partner, a male cop, come up and practically threaten the silver haired boy to let go of the other boy so he can take him to interrogation. Then she turned back to the girls. "I need to ask some questions about what each of you saw from start to finish, alright?" She noticed the girl in the middle was the one crying the most. "What is your name young lady?"
She wiped her face clean and murmured her reply. "Mai."
"Alright Mai. Can we go back to my office to have a chat about what happened? I'm going to need a statement from each of you separately."
Mai nodded her head as she looked between the other teenagers who saved her from what could have been a completely different fate tonight. She nodded her thanks to them as she stepped forward to follow the officer.
Officer Aya turned to the others. "You three can go sit over there and wait until someone can speak with you, alright?"
They nodded their understandings and walked over to the seats that she had pointed to, sitting down and watching as Mai walked with the woman to speak about her ordeal.
°•°•°
Mai followed the officer quietly, feeling nervous, but knowing this is something she needs to do. She took a deep breath in as the nice woman opened the door for her and then she walked through the threshold and sat in the seat across from where officer Aya sat. The officer pulled out a pen and paper from the desk and set it in front of her before setting a voice recorder onto the table as well.
"Now. Are you okay with being recorded?"
Mai looked at the recorder and then at the officer and nodded her head. She watched as the officer clicked the button and it began to blink green, indicating it is now recording.
The officer held up her own notepad and pen as she began her questioning. "Can you tell me your first and last name?"
Mai breathed in and out slowly before answering the simple question. "Tanaka Mai."
Officer Aya wrote that down and asked another question. "And how old are you Mai?"
The teenager sniffled as she held herself tighter. "S-sixteen."
After writing that down, she gave her her full attention. "Can you tell me what happened tonight?"
Mai nodded her head before steeling herself and starting from the beginning. "I was at a Halloween party with my friends... After a while, a-a boy I liked asked to talk to me alone. W-we walked to the hallway and I stopped, but he pulled me into the nearest room and..." she shook her head as more tears came. She looked down into her lap and fisted her shirt in her hands.
"It's okay dear. Take your time."
Mai took a moment to compose herself before speaking up. "H-he pulled into the bedroom... He threw me onto the bed and... a-and started kissing me. I-I was shocked and scared at h-how aggressive he was... I uhm... I managed to push him away to ask what he was doing... H-he only said 'giving you what you want.'" She took another shuttering breath in as more tears fell. "He p-pulled his pants down and held me down by my arms. He t-tried to rip my clothes off, a-and I was begging him to s-stop, but he wouldn't. Th-then he was suddenly off of me and a girl I never met before was in front of me, and I hugged her. I think it was her boyfriend th-that saved me, and then we came here."
The officer wrote everything down into her notes and then spoke calmly to the distraught girl. "I commend you for coming forward and reporting this. I'm going to ask you to give a written statement, and then we will be filing the report. I will also need to speak to the others to see what they have to say from their point of view, alright?"
Mai nodded her head in understanding as she wiped her tear streaked face once again, and then picked up the pen to begin writing down her statement. She watched as the officer clicked the button on the voice recorder and she sighed, writing everything down as she remembers it.
°•°•°
Kagome looked up when an officer came by to speak with them. "I'm gonna need to take each of your statements about what you saw and heard."
Kagome and Ayumi nodded their understanding and Inuyasha grunted. While they were waiting, Kagome had warned Inuyasha they would most likely be speaking to them separately and that he needed to be sure not to say anything that could give him a way, like his sense of smell. He waved her off, claiming he isn't stupid and he'll be fine, and then they sat in silence for the next fifteen minutes or so.
Kagome was the first to go. She squeezed Inuyasha's hand in reassurance and then stood and followed the officer to the back where she would answer his questions. She was a little nervous to be speaking to an unfamiliar man, but she kept telling herself this was a safe space and Inuyasha was right in the same building as her. She took a deep breath in and sat down in the chair across from him.
He pulled out two notebooks, placing one in front of her and holding the other in his hands. "First and last name?"
"H-Higurashi Kagome." She didn't like how cold he seemed, but chalked it down to it being late and close to the holidays.
He wrote that down and looked back at her. "Age?"
"F-fifteen."
He nodded as he set his notebook down and gave her his full attention, chewing his gum rather loudly, which Kagome is really trying to ignore. "What happened tonight to bring you in?"
Why did she feel like she was being interrogated? She took a calming breath in and spoke about what she remembers. "I was at a Halloween party with my friends. I was sitting on the couch, and then my fiancé -"
She was quickly cut off by the officer. "Fiancé? You're too young to get married."
Kagome had to remind herself that this isn't the Sengoku Jidai and this is a police officer. She reined in her anger as she spoke calmly. "My mother gave us permission to marry when I turn sixteen." She doesn't really understand what this had to do with anything anyway. She instinctually wrapped her arms around herself, suddenly feeling much too exposed in this Halloween costume.
He only sighed exasperatedly as he waved his hand as if to say keep going. When she didn't, he let out a small huff. "Well? What happened? I ain't got all night."
Kagome actually wanted to hit this man. She brought her raging anger inward and explained the situation as best as she could so she could the the hell out of here. "My fiancé..." She enunciated that word on purpose to make a point. Petty, but she doesn't care at the moment. "...had heard something in the other room. He quickly got up to go check it out and I followed. As we got closer, I heard Mai's voice. She sounded distraught and scared. She was saying things like, 'no' and 'stop.'" Kagome took a calming breath in, hating that this has happened to someone else, but thankful that Inuyasha was there to stop it. "Inuyasha pulled him off of her and held him against the wall while I made sure that Mai was okay. Then we left and took him in."
The officer chewed on his gum for a few agonizing seconds. "Why didn't ya call us in?"
Why did it seem like he didn't trust her? She inwardly rolled her eyes. "It all happened so fast. I just wanted to make sure Mai was safe and the idiot was in custody. Inuyasha is more than capable of keeping him detained."
He stared at her for a moment, making her feel very uncomfortable, before he sighed and put a pen in front of her. "Give me a written statement, then go back to sit with the others until someone else can speak with them." He stood up and opened the door to his office. "My shift is over." Then he left.
Kagome huffed and picked up the pen to write her side of the story down. When she was finished with that, she walked out to the room where her friends are and noticed Ayumi wasn't there but Mai was sitting next to Inuyasha. She sat on the other side of Mai and looked at her carefully.
"Are you alright?"
Mai nodded as she wrapped her arms closer to herself.
Kagome put her left arm around Mai's shoulders and sat in silence for the next few moments, sharing glances with Inuyasha every few seconds. Finally, the same woman who spoke to Mai came back to pull Inuyasha into the back to speak with him also. He sighed as he stood, hands in his Suikan, and followed the officer. He slumped back into the chair in front of where the woman sat and waited for her to speak first.
"So, according to my notes here, you were the hero today. Can you tell me what happened?"
Inuyasha let out a small scoff as he scratched the back of his neck. "I uh... heard somethin' from the front of the house. I followed the noise and noticed that she was beggin' someone to stop..." He ended that sentence with a small snarl. Hating that anyone would do that to a woman. He clenched his fists together in this lap as he continued, watching the weird blinking light on the table in front of him. "I pushed the door down and pulled the fucker off of her. Kagome made her feel better and then we brought him here."
The officer wrote some notes down and then handed him a notebook and a pen and asked him to write down his statement. Inuyasha blinked at the pen and paper; he's not used to people expecting him to just know how to read and write. He can, but it came as a surprise that they would think it.
He picked up the weird future writing device and wrote down what happened from his point of view, glad that he actually paid attention to the way Kagome writes in school, because otherwise his kanji would be much different than theirs.
When he was finished, he slid the paper across the table to her and stood to leave. The officer told him that they are dismissed and that they will make sure that everything turns out well. He only nodded as his ear flicked before leaving and going back to Kagome.

After everything was set and done, Kagome decided to walk Mai home. Mai said she didn't live too far away and she wasn't up for the party anymore, so Kagome offered to walk with her. She didn't want Mai to walk the streets alone in the dark.
Once Mai was home and she, Kagome and Ayumi exchanged numbers, the remaining two files and Inuyasha went back to the party. Kagome and Ayumi both didn't feel up to partying anymore, what with the circumstances, but they at least wanted to say goodbye to their friends. Even though Kagome didn't like some of the things Eri and Yuka had said and done today, she still sees them as her friends and friends don't abandon each other.
When they made it back to Eri's house where the party was being held, they knocked and waited for a moment. When the door opened, it was Yuka. Kagome apologized for the way they abruptly left, that something very important came up, but they are going to have to head home early. Eri and Hojo had come to the door at that point, where Ayumi apologized to Hojo, feeling bad also, but he shook it off and offered to walk her home. Ayumi smiled and blushed as she nodded her consent, and then they all went their separate ways.
When Kagome and Inuyasha made it back to the shrine, Kagome let out the breath she didn't realize she was holding as she realized her family was already asleep. They walked up the stairs and Kagome pulled out her pajamas before quietly heading to the bathroom to get ready for bed.
She turned the shower on and pulled her costume off, folding it nicely because she plans on wearing it next week when taking her little brother trick or treating. She pulled off her fake fangs and used glue remover to take off her fake claws. She pulled the fake ears off and placed it with the rest of her costume before hopping into the shower and washing the day away.
She thought that getting out there and being with friends would make her life seem normal. She thought that she could just jump back into her old friend group and act like nothing bad has happened.
But everything reminded her of the hell she went through.
The way they practically accused her of being pregnant. Had she really seemed like the type of girl to just have sex, get pregnant, and get married because of it? Her and Inuyasha are even waiting until their wedding night to take that final step in their relationship.
It isn't her fault that he won't be her first.
It isn't her fault that she isn't pure...
She shook her head to free those intrusive thoughts away as she finished up conditioning her hair.
She remembers how she completely froze when another girl was being assaulted. She couldn't even put her own memories aside to help save a poor girl from the same fate as her. How could she be so weak? By the time she got her head out of her ass, Inuyasha had already saved Mai and she saw her crying and curled in on herself in the bed.
A lone tear fell as she stepped out of the shower and began to dry herself.
Why did all of this randomly hit her so hard today? Wasn't she doing like really well? Wasn't she shopping for Halloween and laughing and smiling and taking her meds like instructed? Wasn't she hugging and kissing and having a great time with Inuyasha? Why did she begin to feel so anxious all of a sudden? What is wrong with her?
She took a deep breath in as she finished dressing and then she brushed her teeth and went into her bedroom. She placed her costume in a drawer of the dresser and turned to see Inuyasha actually dressed in modern pajamas without being told to change, and waiting in her bed for her.
She gave him a watery smile as she crawled in beside him and wrapped her arms around his middle. She couldn't prevent more tears from falling as she cuddled into his chest.
Inuyasha ran his claws through her raven hair and let his mate rumble out to sooth her. "Are you okay?"
Kagome wanted to say yes. She wanted him to believe that everything was fine and normal and fan-fucking-tastic.
But she couldn't.
She couldn't lie to him.
And not because he would undoubtedly smell the lie, but because she loves him too much to keep things from him. And if she tells him the truth, she knows he won't judge her. He won't push her away. Hell make everything better.
He always makes everything better.
So, instead of saying that everything was indeed okay, she shook her head and murmured against his chest. "No..."
Inuyasha held her even tighter as he nuzzles his face against the top of her head, purring even louder than before. He wasn't as dumb as everyone seemed to think he was. He knew that today was hard on her. He knew that she wanted to do something normal in her time and it went to absolute shit immediately.
Her dumbass friends wouldn't keep their dumbass mouths shut.
Then some poor human girl was attacked by some jackass human boy. He wished he could have actually chopped his fucking dick off and shoved it into the fuckers ass. But he didn't want to upset Kagome. So they had to speak to more stupid humans about what happened when he could have just dealt with it on his own.
He mentally shook those thoughts free to focus on helping his mate.
He knows that witnessing another young girl get hurt the way she had, must have had her remembering some painful things, and must have had her feeling extra bad about the other girl too. He didn't quite know what to say to help, but he at least knew that giving her this silent comfort, seems to do the trick most of the time.
He kissed her lightly on the top of the head as Kagome continued to cry softly into his chest. "I'm here Kagome, forever."
She nodded against his embrace as a small sob broke free. She knew she was being overly emotional, but she couldn't help it. Today was just so tiring. She squeezed him tighter before her sobs turned into sniffles and hiccups. She sighed as her eyes began to feel heavy and her heart rate started to slow back down.
The last thing she remembers before falling into darkness, was whispering, "forever..." into his warm embrace.

A/N: Thanks so much for reading!
Sorry for adding some more angst! I had already planned on having Inuyasha save a girl from potential rape at the party, I just had to put the pieces together.
If you know how anxiety/depression works, then you know that even with support and medications, you will still have bad days. I wanted to show that Kagome isn't just healed now, she is still hurting, but not as much as she was before.
Thanks again! Please leave an honest review and I'll try to work on the next chapter asap!
