Part 3: "It'll be tough…"
As morning came, Inuyasha felt his powers return to him. He looked at the hut. He was afraid to find out the truth. He needed to know; they all needed to know, but he feared the results.
Inuyasha entered the hut to find the others preparing breakfast. Kagome sat silently against one wall. He could smell her, and she still smelt like Sesshoumaru.
Inuyasha looked at Miroku who was looking at him wanting the truth.
Inuyasha looked over at Kagome who glanced up at him to see him sit down defiantly. His fears were realized as he sorted out the scents in the hut…what Sesshoumaru had said was true-she was indeed pregnant. Kagome wasn't going to like that news. Inuyasha looked over at Miroku and nodded.
Miroku dropped a plate he was holding causing it to fall.
Sango, Kagome, and Kaede looked at Miroku and Inuyasha who seemed to have already discussed something.
"What is it, Houshi-sama?" Sango asked. She looked at Inuyasha. "Inuyasha?"
Inuyasha hated what he had to do, but he had to do it-tell the truth, for once. "What happened yesterday isn't the worst of what happened." He said bluntly. He watched as Kagome grew silently angry. "Miroku and I discussed this last night. Seems that Sesshoumaru did something none of us thought he would do-claim a human."
Sango dropped the spoon she was holding.
"It's done and can't be fully un-done." Inuyasha looked at Kagome, who now looked more frightened than angry. "But…it can be tested."
Kaede looked at Inuyasha. "What does the test consist of?"
"Well, that's tough, at least at the present situation." Inuyasha said as he lowered his head. "That's why I'm taking Kagome home. Only she and I can pass through the well, and it's a perfect way to stop him. In three months, we can come back and he won't be able to challenge what choice she makes in the three months."
"Three months?" Miroku asked. "She's human, Inuyasha. Why are you shortening it?"
"Shut up, baka, and let me finish." Inuyasha said. He looked at the worried Shippo and the dumbfounded other members of the group. "You won't like this, Kagome, but I have to tell you. No turning back now. You're pregnant, Kagome."
"What!" Sango was the one to yell and stand up, while Kagome just looked at Inuyasha as if she was waiting for him to laugh and say it was a joke. "It…can't be!"
"That's why she has to go home." Inuyasha said.
Miroku motioned for Sango to sit back down and she obliged.
"It will be tough, I assure you, Kagome, but…in three months you won't have to worry about him trying to get at you any more; you'll belong to someone else…if my plan goes correctly." Inuyasha said. "I...wish…that you didn't have to make such a choice, but in three months if Sesshoumaru hasn't touched you within the last week of your pregnancy then you're free to choose someone else."
"Three months…?" Kagome muttered.
"The fact that…one parent is youkai, it sped up your pregnancy, Kagome." Inuyasha said.
Kagome shook her head.
Shippo looked at Kagome and then Inuyasha. "So…she's pregnant with a hanyou?"
"Shippo, now isn't the time…" Miroku began.
"Yes she is, Shippo." Inuyasha said. He looked at Miroku. "Shippo is involved in this, too, Miroku; no point in hiding it from him. He's a youkai; he realizes more than you think."
Shippo was surprised at Inuyasha; he seemed different. Inuyasha definitely seemed smarter than he looked.
"Shippo is just worried about Kagome, as we all are." Inuyasha finished.
Inuyasha stood up. "Let's go, Kagome."
"Now?" Sango asked as she stood up and faced Inuyasha. "She needs us, Inuyasha; not just you."
"Baka! Would you rather wait for him to come and take her!" Inuyasha yelled. "Do you want me to tell you when that will be? Fine! The next New Moon, you moron. What'd be a better time since he knows I'm powerless then!"
Sango seemed shocked.
"What? You think he didn't know!" Inuyasha yelled. "Try living with him for years if you want to get the full ordeal, Sango. Try standing up to him when you have no way to stop him! Sango, I am the only one who can help Kagome! It can kill me, but hey, I'm trying!"
"It can kill you…?" Sango asked. "What does that mean?"
"Some great and powerful youkai exterminator you are, and you know nothing about youkai." Inuyasha said. "Wonderful good you are, Sango. You see, she does belong to him at the moment, and if he sees anything we do as a threat to that, we're at his power. Since you're humans, he'd kill you; since I'm hanyou, he'd control me until he wishes to kill me. Shippo is the only one who wouldn't suffer the consequences; he's a child. If you want me to put it bluntly-Shippo is Kagome's child, now."
Everyone fell to silence.
"Let's go, Kagome." Inuyasha said.
Kagome hugged Shippo and then stood up. "Don't worry…I'm sure Inuyasha knows what he's doing."
"Kagome…?" Shippo said.
Inuyasha walked out of the hut and led Kagome to the well. "You forgot your bag."
Kagome remained silent the entire way to the well. She stopped in front of the well and stood there.
Inuyasha looked at her. "Go on. I have a feeling you don't want to be close to me, anyway."
Kagome looked at Inuyasha.
"I don't blame you for not wanting me near you." Inuyasha said. "Now, go on. I'll wait long enough for you to have time to climb out of the well on your side."
Kagome jumped in the well.
Inuyasha stood in wait. He would give her a little more time to make her way out of the well. After a few minutes, he jumped in the well.
Inuyasha appeared in the well in the future to find Kagome still there. "Kagome?"
Kagome lowered her head.
Inuyasha backed up from her in the enclosed space.
"Inuyasha…" Kagome began.
"What is it Kagome…?" Inuyasha asked.
Kagome threw her arms around Inuyasha and began sobbing against his chest. "Tell me this is a dream!"
Inuyasha put his arms around her and held her. He closed his eyes and turned his face upwards. "I…wish…I could…but it isn't, Kagome."
"What am...I going to tell my mom…?" Kagome muttered.
"Let me handle it." Inuyasha said. "After all…it is my fault."
"It isn't your fault…!" Kagome mumbled.
"Kagome…" Inuyasha said. He hated that he couldn't do anything more than he was trying. As long as everything ended all right, he'd be happy, even if she didn't want to be around him.
"Inuyasha…what did you mean…when I had to choose someone else?" Kagome asked.
Inuyasha released her, wanting her to back up, and she did. "Well…let's get out of the well, first." He crouched down and motioned for her to climb on his back.
Kagome climbed on his back, and he jumped the out of the well. She climbed down when they were in the well house.
Inuyasha turned to face her. "If he doesn't manage to retain his claim on you; you have to choose someone, anyone, to replace him or his claim is kept if you have no other choice."
Kagome didn't like the way it sounded, but it sounded better than "belonging" to Sesshoumaru as was the other choice of the matter.
"I smell like him, don't I?" Kagome asked as she lowered her head. "That's the real reason you want to stay away from me, isn't it?"
"Kagome…that…it doesn't matter." Inuyasha said.
"Do I?" Kagome asked.
Inuyasha wasn't going to lie, though he wanted to. "Yes, you do. And I look similar to him; that's why you are afraid of me." Inuyasha turned to the door. "Come on, let's go."
Kagome followed Inuyasha to her house. She was afraid of what her mother and grandfather would say. Souta didn't need to hear it. (Oh my god…I'm really going to have to face this… I never thought…this would be a reason for me to come home. Three months…? Can I deal with three months? I don't know what to do.)
Inuyasha and Kagome walked into the house to find Kagome's family sitting at the table eating.
"Kagome?" Souta asked as he looked at his sister. "You brought Inu-niichan home today. What's the occasion?"
Kagome began to panic. Questions were already beginning to be asked. It was unusual for Inuyasha to come with her to her home; he always showed up on his own…later.
"Oi, kid, go play with that box in your room." Inuyasha ordered.
Souta knew when Inuyasha meant what he said, and this time Inuyasha meant it. He didn't protest and scrambled away from the table as fast as he could.
"Sit down, Kagome." Inuyasha said.
"Don't order me." Kagome said as she looked at him.
Inuyasha turned facing her and put a hand on his hip. "It would be better if you sat down, Kagome, please." He stepped out of the way of the chair, and motioned for her to sit. "I'm not forcing you, but it'd be better.
Kagome's mother and grandfather watched in wonder as Kagome sat down in the chair.
"It'd be best to listen to me completely before you ask questions." Inuyasha said. "Everything I say may come to be quite a shock."
Kagome's mother put her bowl down on the table and turned her attention to Inuyasha. Kagome's grandfather did the same. Both remained silent.
"Something…happened on the other side of the well." Inuyasha explained. "Despite how much she says it, none of it is Kagome's fault."
"It is my fault." Kagome mumbled.
"No, it isn't." Inuyasha replied. "Let me finish or would you prefer to explain the situation?"
Kagome shook her head and fell silent.
"All right, then." Inuyasha said. "Kagome wandered into the woods by herself; she does it often, so she probably didn't think about anything bad happening, 'cause she knew she could call for me, and I'd be there, but…that situation was different."
Inuyasha twitched his ear. "Souta! I know you're outside this room; I said go play with that box!"
Everyone could hear the sound of Souta scampering away from the outside of the room.
"Now…" Inuyasha said. "I don't know if Kagome told you or not, but…I have an older half-brother-he's cruel, relentless, and could care less about other's feelings. There's no way to stop him when he sets his mind to something. He's powerful, and I've already tried to kill him countless times. It's lucky…that Kagome is alive and not worse of than she is. Yesterday, he made her do as…he told her and in youkai terms, as it will have to be handled, he…claimed her as his."
"This is an outrage!" Kagome's grandfather yelled. "Hanyou is bad enough to have around; we don't need a full youkai bothering our Kagome. Tell him that he can't claim her; she's human!"
"Baka!" Inuyasha yelled. "If it were that easy, we wouldn't be here! Do you even know what I meant when I said that he claimed her! He…he…" He was struggling for the words.
"Raped me." Kagome finished. She faked a smile and looked at her grandfather, "I suppose…this means…you're going to be a…Great Grandfather, neh…?"
"No, Kagome, that's a lie!" Her grandfather yelled. "There's no way to prove such a thing after such a short time."
Inuyasha slammed his hand down on the table. "Listen, old man; I'm not stupid! Everyone thinks I am, but I'm not! Get over human logic, for once. I'm a hanyou, and what my brother told me is true-she is pregnant whether you like it or not! Nothing can turn that back. Nothing can stop it; it's done! I don't like this any more than you do, but…I'm trying my best to help her despite that it could end my life! Now, can I finish without being interrupted?"
Kagome's grandfather nodded.
"Now, Kagome and I are the only ones who can pass through the well, so we're going to stay here until three months have passed at the least." Inuyasha said. "I know it seems to rush it, but she's pregnant because of a youkai, which speeds up the pregnancy, and it also means that if the child inside of her is injured, she'd die. During the last week of the pregnancy if my brother hasn't touched her, she gets to make a choice of who the 'surrogate' father will be, and that is her choice, so don't push your luck on anyone who doesn't know what is going on."
"Oh, and who are you intending the choice to be…you?" Her mother asked.
Inuyasha was actually stumped by the question. He hadn't thought about it. "Well…I…anyone…It could be the wimpy wolf from the other time for all I care-anyone besides that bastard who did this to her."
Kagome looked at Inuyasha in surprise that he actually mentioned Kouga, not by name, but it was implied. He really was worried about what would become of her and hearing he would rather her belong to Kouga of all people proved it.
Kagome's mother looked at Kagome. "Dear, why won't you go take you a relaxing bath?"
Kagome actually froze. "Not alone, I'm not." She looked at Inuyasha. "Would you sit at the door…inside-facing the door?"
Inuyasha looked at her in surprise. "Uh, you hid from me when touched you in the forest, remember?"
Kagome's grandfather stood up. "There's no way that creature is going to stay with you while you bathe."
"Oh, what, are you going to go tell his brother the same thing!" Kagome yelled. "Oh, wait…Inuyasha's brother already did!" Kagome stood up and slammed her hands on the table. "Shut up, Ji-chan; you have no idea what went on!" She raised her wrists for him to see. "And guess what, he only has one arm to hold me back and I couldn't move! Would you rather see the claw marks or do you still not find why I don't want to be left alone logical! If Inuyasha was there, he would have stopped it…but he wasn't!"
Kagome placed a finger over the bit place on her lip. "It was disgusting, Ji-chan…it really was, and you don't seem to give a fuck! Don't scream, don't move, and relax are hard commands to follow when you despise the person who orders them! He's tried to kill me before…and now…I…I wish he would have!" She went toward the door leading to the living room, but stopped before she went through the doors
"Inuyasha, stay with Kagome." Kagome's mother said to him.
