Burn Scars
Chapter 3: To Realize
“How are you?”
Kagome looked up at Inuyasha. Her eyes were still red, but the crying had stopped. Her brother was curled in her lap, his eyes closed wearily in an uneasy sleep. Tear streaks were visible on her dirty blouse, her hair pulled back so she didn't have to mess with it. The police had placed them in a small apartment complex, giving them a tiny white room with only two beds and a miniature bathroom.
“I've been better,” she smiled grimly, flinching as her voice cracked.
He wrapped his arms around her waist, and she leaned back against him.
“I remember when my mother died,” he said, “It was the day I decided I was going to become a full demon. No one helped me bury her, and I think that was the first time I ever really cried.”
She looked at him for a moment, surprised at the confession. “I think I'm just going to go to sleep,” she sighed, “I'm tired.”
The hanyou nodded and helped her onto the bed. She pulled her Souta closer and buried her head into a pillow. The bed sunk down beside her as Inuyasha settled himself as he normally did.
It was going to be a long night.

Morning dawned on the village, and four pairs of eyes blinked open.
“Is it morning already?” Sango groaned as she sat up. She and Miroku had been using Kirara as a pillow while they had waited for Inuyasha and Kagome to return. Shippo sat in Sango's lap and rolled off as he yawned widely.
“Is Inuyasha not back yet?” he asked through his yawn. “How long does it take to return a book?”
“Perhaps he's been caught up,” Miroku gripped the edge of the well and pulled himself up, glancing down. “He's met demons in Kagome's time before.”
“Yeah, but it usually doesn't take this long for Inuyasha to go between Kagome's time and this one. I'm starting to get worried.”
“I'm sure they're fine,” Shippo said, “What's the worse that could've happened?”

Kagome stared at the ceiling. She'd spent all night thinking. Her mind hadn't let her rest, and now she was paying for it.
She had to be a mother now.
That was the first thought that had occurred. She couldn't be Souta's sister anymore; she was his mother. And he was far too young to take care of himself on his own, which meant she couldn't travel between worlds as often.
Not to mention she had to get a job. She had to take care of her little brother, and that meant she had to make money. That meant she couldn't disappear for days or weeks at a time.
It meant she couldn't go to Inuyasha's time anymore.
It meant she couldn't see her friends.
It meant she couldn't be with Inuyasha.
It meant a lot of things.
Worst of all it meant she couldn't see Inuyasha anymore.
Why had this happened? Was someone trying to tell her something? What was the point of killing her parents?
She groaned and sat up. All this thinking was giving her a headache.
`Please,' she thought, `Just let this turn out okay.'
Yet somehow she knew it wouldn't.
Author(ess) Notes:
Another short chapter, but a chapter nonetheless. You should be thankful.
Be thankful!
I plan on posting another story: InuAi (“Dog Love”, or, as I love to call it, “puppy love.”) It's the untold story of Inuyasha's parents. Look for it sometime soon.
