After the hard won battle the group recuperated in Kaede's hut and village life returned to normal. While healing they made plans to bury Kohaku and care for the graves of the other demon slayers. Everyone avoided thinking about what would happen to the group after because they didn't want to think about the possibility of splitting up after all they had been through together.

Once rested they began their journey walking slower than normal to make it last. No one disturbed them on the way to the ruined village, though they may have welcomed the distraction.

Upon arrival Miroku and Inuyasha dug the grave while Shippo and the girls gathered flowers for all the graves. Deciding to stay the night in the village camp was set up in one of the more complete huts.

“If no one else will bring the subject up I will.” Miroku's calm voice filled the air. He recognized the need to talk about it even if they didn't want to. “What do we do now? I will be honest, I do not want to separate our group. Yet we have no purpose now.” Sango was next to speak.

“I whish to stay together as well.”

“I would like to also. I have been thinking about what Midoriko said and I believe that my place is here, in this era with you guys. I just have nothing in common with people in my time anymore.” Kagome trailed off thinking about her so called “friends.” Inuyasha grunted,

“Maybe the hag'll know something. We could set up a hut or two on the edge of the village and if nothing else people will come begging us to help like always.” The others could see through his tough guy act to the message underneath, he want the group to stay too.

“That's a great idea!” Kagome exclaimed and gave him a quick hug.

After the others had gone to sleep Inuyasha stayed up thinking about Kouga's advice and decided that he should do it now. This way the others won't interrupt. He goes to Kagome and shakes her awake.

“I want to talk to you. Come with me?” Inuyasha's voice was both a question and a command. They left and walked to an area out of hearing range of regular voices.

“What I asked Kouga outside for was advice. I haven't followed it yet.” Kagome knowing how hard it is for him to open up resolved not to interrupt him and spoil the moment.

“My demon side has been surfacing lately and I #sigh# I have to admit I like you.” He hesitated on that part because he just can't tell her it is love for fear of rejection. He hurried on. “My demon side could become dangerous if I don't.” Seeing her shocked expression he turns and when she didn't say anything his ears drop.

“I can understand if you are disgusted. I'll take you back and never bring this up again.” Kagome heard the sadness dripping from his voice and goes to him. Inuyasha thought she was going to get on his back and all his sides hurt until he got a shock. She hugged him.

“Oh Inuyasha! I could never be disgusted by you. I was shocked because I have wanted to hear you say that for so long. I love you too.” Knowing him like she did she felt it was safe to assume that is what he meant when he said like. He turned to stare at her, she then raised up to peck him on the lips. After she drew back he lowered his head and they engaged in a more passionate kiss.

A much lighter hearted group started back to Kaede's village the next morning. As the gang was about an hour from the village one over from Kaede's there was a sudden scream and Kagome was no longer there.

*NOOO!*

~Where did she go?~

'We have to get her back!'
~Yes!~

*Kill whoever took OUR mate!*

The others watched as Inuyasha's markings appeared but his eyes remained gold.

“Wait outside the next village for us.” Came the low, gravely command. They nodded as he raced off, following Kagome's sent. A curious Shippo asked,

“Why wasn't Inuyasha in a blood lust?”

“Perhaps this is what Midoriko meant.” Miroku mused.

“What do you mean?” Sango was also interested in what was happening to her friend.

“We all know he cares for Kagome right. Well all sides would want her back. They are in harmony so there is no blood lust but more primal instincts.”

The trail led to a cave not far away and inside there was Kagome blocked in a corner by a demon. Inuyasha could here the demon as he got closer.

“When that weak and pathetic half-breed gets here I'll kill him. If you're lucky maybe I'll keep you around for awhile.” The demon's hand raised to suggestively trace her check.

“Like HELL you will!” Inuyasha roared as he attacked. The other demon didn't know what hit him as he was eviscerated. Shaking the blood off his claws Inuyasha slowly approached Kagome wary of how she would react to him in this form. She softly called out to him,

“Inuyasha” unsure if he was in a blind rage or not. When he was close enough his hand raised to caress her check. It took a bit of effort on her part to not flinch but she knew any sign of rejections would chase him away. When his extra long claws didn't pierce her skin she leaned forward to give him a chaste kiss. The kiss reassured Inuyasha and her sent calmed him back to a hanyou.

When they reached the village Sango started to ask what happened when a cry of

“Pervert” was heard. Everyone turned to look at Miroku who held up his hands in a warding gesture,

”I've been here with Sango the whole time. It wasn't me.”

”This time.” Shippo mumbled, Miroku glared at the kit.

”Lets find out what is going on.” Kagome said before walking in the direction of the shout.
