The victors turn and to their surprise it wasn't Kin who had voiced his disbelief but Kiyoshi. It was then the shocked faces around them were noticed. Kiyoshi's mate looked like she'd seen a ghost. Sango shifted into a defensive stance as she asked

“Any idea what this is about?”

Before she got her answer Sesshomaru waved them over.

“The winner is the Shikon pack.” He announced. Then he turned to the group.

“Follow this Sesshomaru. You too Kiyoshi and Yori.”

They made their way through the halls in silence, all of them confused. When they reached the study Kagome, Sango and Shippo sat on the settee with Miroku and Inuyasha behind them once more. Yori and Sesshomaru settled into in the chairs, an agitated Kiyoshi hovered near his mate.

“How did you become acquainted with the kit?”

“Huh? This is about the runt?”

“Why do you want to know?” Kagome hugged Shippo closer to her with a sense of foreboding.

“That attack.” Yori whispered from her seat. Kiyoshi placed his hand on his green-eyed mate's shoulder as he nodded.

“What are your parent's names young one?”

Shippo was glad of his adopted mother's embrace because he felt nervous with everyone's attention on him.

“Umm. My birth parents were killed by the thunder brothers. Then Inuyasha and Mama helped me avenge them and took me with on their quest.

Yori gasped and stated to cry silently into her hands. Shippo looked at Kagome,

“Did I say something wrong Mama?”

“No young one.” Kiyoshi turned to his mate.

“We don't know for sure yet Yori. Calm yourself until we do.” For all Kiyoshi's words there was an undercurrent of sadness.

“Now what were your parent's names?” Shippo thought for a moment.

“Makoto and Mariko.”

Kiyoshi crouched down in front of Shippo and studied him for a bit.

“Did you know I had a son? But I did something foolish. He wanted to mate one of the servants at my home and I would not allow it. They both ran away and I could not find them. My son's name was Makoto and people in my family are the only ones capable of using Fox Fire.”

By this time everyone knew here this was going and Kagome was trying to hold back her own tears.

“So you're my grandpa and grandma?” Kiyoshi nodded.

“Cool!”

“Would you like to spend the day with us?”

“Sure.” Shippo squirmed out of Kagome's hold and bounced over to Yori and introduced himself. His happy go lucky manner soon had the lady smiling again.

Sesshomaru watched the whole thing with his usual blank face. He noticed Kagome's valiant effort to not cry and how Sango had an arm around her shoulders and Kirara had curled up in her lap to comfort her.

“You may explore the grounds if you wish, but do not get in anyone's way.” He stated, almost as if he was trying to provide a distraction. “Dinner will be served in four hours.” And just like that they were dismissed. Kagome and Sango opted to have a soak before a bit of exploring.

That night's dinner was much more relaxed as the new pack had gained some respect. The only source of unease was a when Shippo decided to sit with his grandparents instead of Kagome.

Later that night Inuyasha went out to find Kagome sitting the garden under a tree watching the bejewled night sky. He flopped down beside her and, after checking to make certain no one was around, he pulled her to him so that her head rested on his shoulder.

“Will I loose him Inuyasha?” She asked mournfully.

“What kind of stupid question is that? You're his mother now remember.” He replied lifting her palm and showing the adoption mark. “He's just happy to know her has family other than our crazy group. I know I am.” The last bit came out softly. Kagome smiled.

`That is true. They are acting more like brothers now.' She snuggled closer to Inuyasha's side and went back to watching the stars feeling more peaceful and safe.

~This is nice.~

`Oh no. Not you guys again. I can already feel a headache coming on.'

*Wimp. Tell Alpha that we wish to take mate.*

`You've got a one track mind don't you? Maybe we should talk to her first?'

~Yes it wouldn't do for her to be angry with us.~

*Fine. Tell her then Alpha.*

Inuyasha sighed then looked at the girl next to him.

“Hey Kagome.”

“Yeah.” She replied peacefully.

“You know what we talked about before. About being together.” He waited for her nod. “Well I haven't officially asked yet, but I can't until I tell Sesshomaru and he agrees.”

“What? Why?” She asked startled as she sat up to see his face better.

“Because besides the fact that he is my older brother and head of the family we are now under his command.”

He watched slightly amused at her different expressions as she thought it through before she settled on understanding.

“Okay. I guess it makes sense. Will you talk to him soon?”

*Very soon. Like now?*

~No lets enjoy her company for now.~

`Too late to move now. She's comfy. It'll wait till tomorrow.'

*Humph.*

“Sure soon.” He agreed out loud before shifting to a more comfortable spot.

Minutes later Inuyasha could hear the pitter patter of someone running their way. He looked up to see Shippo careen around the corner.

“Mama!” He shouted as he jumped into her embrace.

“Hello Shippo. Did you have fun today?”

The young kitsune nodded as he yawned. “I learned lots about my other parents and my family. And Lord Kiyoshi promised to give me lessons when we are here. So then I can help out more.” Shippo while obviously proud of this was also fighting a loosing battle to stay awake.

“Sleep now Shippo. I take you in and tuck you in soon.”

“Mama. If you and Inuyasha mate will he be my Dad?'

The sleepy question made both adults sputter a bit before Inuyasha's gruffness returned.

“How did you know we'd mate runt?”

“It's obvious. Will you? I miss having a Dad.”

“Sure runt. I can do that.”
