Really sorry about the long wait but a stressful house is not the best place to write.

Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha that honour is Rumiko Takahashi's.

The next morning found the previously estranged brothers in the study, one calm and dignified the other clearly nervous and agitated.

“You are disturbing my work Inuyasha. Just say what you came to say and put us both out of your misery.”

“Bastard. It's not an easy subject for me you know.” Inuyasha took a deep breath before continuing. “I wanna take Kagome as my mate and all I know is I'm supposed to come to you.”

Sesshomaru paused his reading and slowly raised his head to look at his younger brother.

“Not what you were expecting? Myoga insisted that I know that much when I started hanging out with Kikyo. So I figured it meant I had to get your permission or something.”

“It does mean that. It also means that I'll have to provide you with what you'll need.”

Inuyasha stared at his brother warily waiting for him to explain.

“Because you are my younger brother I'll have to prepare a safe room for you and a ceremony for after.” Inuyasha nodded his understanding.

“Anything else?” Inuyasha shook his head in response. “I'd recommend waiting until after the ceremony in two days.”

Sesshomaru went back to his work effectively dismissing the hanyou.

Inuyasha walked to the gardens where the others were. Miroku was talking with Kiyoshi and Akiyama. Sango was speaking to Akiyama's mate, who looked like quite the warrior herself. The two lonely youngsters who hardly ever got to play with people their own age were enjoying themselves in games that adults wouldn't understand. Kagome was listening intently to Yori absorbing all she could on raising a kitsune. This set the restful pattern for the next few days.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

The ceremony was held outside under an ancient tree. Inuyasha walked in front followed by Shippo and Miroku to his left and Kagome and Sango to his right. When the reached Sesshomaru he started speaking.

“Do you give your word to protect all the Western Lands, the people therein, their interests denying help to none in need?”

“I give my word.” Inuyasha responded while the others nod.

“I accept your oath. In return for your loyalty to my lands and myself I extend to you my protection and a place to call home.” Sesshomaru motioned to his brother who held out his arm, inside up. Sesshomaru used his claw to cut a horizontal line on both there arms then they held the cuts together for a bit. “It is done. You are now Lord Inuyasha and second in command of the West my brother.”

Inuyasha tried to hide his feelings as best he could but there was so much emotion he could not hide it all. He now had what he'd been missing all his life, family, home and purpose. The solemn atmosphere was not broken as everyone filed out of the gardens and made their way back to their rooms.

When they arrived Kagome threw her arms around Inuyasha's neck and squeezed because she was so happy for him. The gruff hanyou looked slightly embarrassed at the contact when others were watching but went ahead with what he had planed anyway.

“Come for a walk with me?”

Kagome studied him for a moment before nodding her assent. Miroku had his lecherous face on and, as happens often, his hand went were it shouldn't have and his head payed for it. Kagome giggled as she and Inuyasha left.

Inuyasha led her to a different spot in the gardens from where the ceremony had been held. The hanyou found a bench under a tree and sat there pulling the slightly confused miko down with him.

“I talked to Sesshomaru and he said to wait until after today.” This statement only served to confuse the girl more. Until she recalled the nighttime conversation a few days prior.

“Oh. Well now that it's after what were you thinking?”

*Tonight! I vote tonight!* Inuyasha defiantly agreed with his demonic half but was hesitant because he didn't know what her reaction would be.

“Umm. Maybe…Tonight? Or you can pick when, it doesn't matter to me.” He mumbled. Kagome placed her hand on his mouth as it looked like he might keep on rambling.

“I've been waiting several years now. Tonight sounds fine to me.”

It took a few minutes for Inuyasha to process the news. When he did he jumped up and in an uncharacteristic display lifted his mate-to-be up and spun her around, before engaging in a brief kiss.

They went to Sesshomaru and, both red from embarrassment and joy, told him of their desire. He didn't look very surprised as he agreed to have a room prepared for them after dinner. Then they had to explain things to the rest of their pack. The news was met by an ecstatic Shippo, Sango and Kilala. Miroku was knocked out because he couldn't keep his mouth shut.

That night a pleasantly tired and extremely happy newly mated couple cuddled together under their covers dreaming of the future. A future full of adventure, love and family.

A/N: I'm going to stop here for now. I'm thinking about doing some more for this story, or a sequel but I want to get some ideas sorted out first.
