Hiraikotsu glistens in the soft rays of the slowly setting sun. Light catches on the polished bone as it arches its way across the field, soaring through the battlefield with expert precision. The massive spider demon doesn't even realize that it's lost all 4 legs on one side, until it crashes unceremoniously to the ground. Screams of rage and fury fill the sky, as the spider demon struggles to right itself. Its remaining limbs thrash uselessly underneath its huge and bulky form, when a figure appears before the creatures eight eyes. It looks curiously up at the tip of a long white blade glowing above it, but the spider feels little fear by the impressive size of the blade. Instead, it is the glowing amber eyes behind the blade that tells the spider demon that this is one battle he will not be winning. The spider lashes out with its remaining limbs, in one last futile attempt to take down its new opponent. The glowing blade slices through the air, impaling itself through the creature's thick skull with a sickening moist thud. Its limbs finally fall silent.
“Keh, never did like spiders.” Inu Yasha quickly removes the Tetsusaiga from inside the fallen spider demon as gooey threads of brain and slime cling to the blade.
“Uh… gross!” Inu Yasha quickly wipes the blade along the grass and throws himself back into the battle.
Sango, having retrieved Hiraikotsu on its return flight back from the spider demon, continues to smash through the demon and human forces at Naraku's base.
“Where do you think you're going missy?” Sango whips around to the sound of the voice behind her. One of Naraku's human guards levels a sawed off shotgun directly in front of her. A tiny smile creeps into Sango's eyes.
“Oh sugar, you don't want to point that awful thing at me, now do you?” Sango smiles sweetly, her eyelashes fluttering softly over her big brown eyes as she tries to distract the guard from noticing the large bone weapon hidden behind her back.
The guard seems to notice her and her human attributes for the first time, as he begins to take in the tantalizing sight of Sango's soft pink tank top pulling tightly against her chest. Her full lips pursed together in a luscious smile. A leering grin spreads across the guards face. “Well, well, well. What do we have here?” Sango feigns a blush while giggling softly behind her hand.
“I think you better follow me cutey pie, it's dangerous out here. I'll keep you safe and out of harms way.” The guard slowly lowers his shotgun as a lecherous grin spreads across his face.
Sango smiles as she giggles sweetly again. “Oh, I don't think that would be a good idea.”
“Oh yeah? And why's that little lady? I've got the big guns after all.”
“Oh, you mean this one?”
The guard whips around in time to see Miroku's fist come flying at his face. The guard stumbles back, dropping his hold on the shotgun. With lightning reflexes, Miroku catches the gun in mid fall, spins the shotgun in his hands, and smashes the butt end into the guard's skull. Before the guard even has time to react, he is an unconscious heap on the floor.
Miroku looks impressed at the sawed off shotgun in his hands. “Hmmmm, not bad actually.”
Sango laughs, “I tried to warn him.” She places a quick kiss on Miroku's cheek. “Oh yeah, and nice timing.”
“Hey, I can't let you have all the fun.” Miroku laughs as he discards the shotgun, not being a real fan of guns anyways.
“Speaking of having all the fun, I think we should find Inu Yasha and Kouga.”
“Yeah, knowing those two, they've probably blasted all the demons they can handle and have moved onto Naraku, and I sure don't want to miss that. Let's go!”
The two take off in pursuit of their friends. The direction they need to take not difficult to discern. Just follow the path of carnage and destruction. A path that was leading directly to Naraku's main structure.
***********
“Come on dog shit, I know you can do better then that!”
“Oh yeah? Watch this!”
Inu Yasha leaps into the air, towards the main structure that many of the demons have converged on, in an attempt to keep Inu Yasha from getting to Narkau's stronghold. Soaring into the sky, his bangs plastered to his forehead, Inu Yasha's muscles bunch and tighten at the coming attack. He raises the Tetsusaiga over his head, gritting his teeth before unleashing the awesome power of his father's sword. Inu Yasha's roar carries across the devastated base.
“BACKLASH WAVE!!”
Brilliant light and hordes of hurricanes explode in the path of power brought on by one of Tetsusaiga ultimate attacks. Earth is torn and ripped from the ground as powerful winds and searing energy encircle and devastate the unsuspecting demons. As others try to escape, they are trapped and pulled in by their demonic auras, sucked in by the catastrophic power of the Backlash Wave. Nothing is left of the eighty some odd demons that had dared to meet the power of Inu Yasha's sword head on.
Kouga gazes at the devastation before him. Ashes of what once had been mindless demons float by on the wind.
“Cool.”
“Keh. You should see when I use my Diamond Spear Blast. That really tears some shit up.”
“Showing off again I see.” Miroku and Sango jog forward to meet up with their comrades.
“Keh. Late again I see.”
“You know me Inu, I arrive exactly when I mean too.” Miroku's happy and lop sided grin reminded Inu Yasha of exactly why he fought so hard to keep his friends safe. They were weird. They were strange. They were like him.
“Yeah, how interesting that that's always when the fights over.” Inu Yasha gives the monk a friendly shove towards Naraku's now unguarded structure. “Come on, we got one more house to knock on.” Inu Yasha was itching to find his missing mate, and put an end to Naraku once and for all.
“Oh this is going to be fun.” Miroku smiles gleefully while rubbing his hands together in an eager gesture.
Kouga laughs as he follows Inu Yasha towards the structure, giving Miroku a friendly shove of his own. “Trick or treat monk. Play times over.”
“Oh good, `cause I was afraid all the easy stuff was over.” Sango sarcastically remarks as she re-slings her heavy boomerang to her back. No one really wanted to talk about what was really weighing on their minds. Where was Kagome? Was she okay? Why hadn't Naraku shown himself yet?
As they approach the main doors to Naraku's structure, a wild sinister laugh rings through the air as a cloud of dark smoke explodes around the little group, quickly engulfing them in a wall of poisonous smoke that glows an eerie purplish color.
A gut-wrenching scream, that sounds oddly like Kagome, tears across the field, just as Inu Yasha, Kouga, Miroku and Sango are swallowed up by the killing smoke.
*************
The unmistakable laughter of evil and triumph rings through the pale sky.
“No…this is not happening.” Kagome races towards her friends, towards her mate. She swallows hard in an effort to remove her heart from her throat, but the pounding in her chest is so fast and so intense, her body aches with every heartbeat.
Kagome speeds across the base, jumping over discarded bits of demons and making her way around piles of unconscious guards. She catches an unmistakable glimpse of white in the distance, closer to the main structure that looms ahead. Her voice escapes in a tortured whisper as it cracks on her lips, “Inu Yasha.”
Urging herself forward, Kagome races towards them, just as the unmistakable sight of poisonous gas erupts around her friends. The feel of Miko power infused into the gas is immediately felt by Kagome, who screams in horror at the sight before her. Tears begin to spill uncontrollably and unnoticed from her eyes. She's still too far away to reach them and she knows all too well how quickly demon poisonous gas can disintegrate a being.
“NOOOOOOOOOO!!” Overcome by the horrific sight before her, Kagome collapses to the ground. Her sobs rack through her body, as she struggles to keep the bile from rising in her throat, to keep from loosing her hold on sanity. Not again. No. It couldn't be. Why?
Tearing at the dirt beneath her with her fisted hands, pounding the ground in her fury, her heartbroken wails carry across the devastated landscape, as she gives into the horrible realization that the past cannot be changed, and that once again, she was unable to save the ones that she loved.
