Chapter 32
~*~*~*~*~*~*~Flashback~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“Dog face!”
“Rat face!”
“Jerk!”
“Stupid!”
“Dog turd!”
“Grrrrr, what was that Shippou you little brat!?”
“Eeek! KA-GO-ME!”
Shippou races off towards the direction of his foster mother, who is sitting by the lake with Sango, while an angry dog-demon runs hot on his tail.
“Get back here you little runt!” Inu Yasha chases after the quick little fox who is already hiding beneath Kagome's Miko robes.
Kagome gives her mate a questioning look as she wraps her arms around the little furry bundle shaking beneath her robes. “Inu Yasha?”
“Grrrr, that kid needs to get his mouth washed out with soap!”
“Why, what did he do?”
“He's giving me grief, that's what he's doing! He's starting to talk like that stupid useless wolf now!”
Kagome and Sango suppress a giggle. It was one thing for Shippou to start acting like Inu Yasha, who secretly enjoyed the kit trying to be more like him, but it was another thing entirely for the little kitsune to take on any traits associated with Kouga.
“Oh come on now Inu Yasha, you can't be mad at him. He's just trying to figure out who he is.”
“Yeah,” a tiny little voice squeaks out from beneath Kagome's robes. “Like Kagome said, you can't be mad at me.” Two large adorable and heart-breaking blue eyes appear out of the top of Kagome's collar, as the rest of Shippou's body remains concealed beneath the robes. He blinks his big blue crystal eyes in an innocent gesture.
“Grrrr, you can't pull that shit on me kid! I invented that look!” Inu Yasha shakes his fist at the pleading blue eyes before him that begin to water and quiver around the edges.
Blink. Blink.
Inu Yasha sighs as he slowly lowers his head in defeat. “Why do I even try?”
Unable to hold themselves back any longer, Kagome and Sango give into their fits of laughter. An irritated Inu Yasha stomps off and disappears into the tops of a tree, a fair distance away.
“Do you think he's really mad?” Sango finally asks, as she stretches herself out along the lakeside to take in some of the warm sun.
“Nah.” Kagome rubs the top of Shippou's head, which is now protruding from the top of Kagome's wide collar. “He's just embarrassed that he got busted giving into `the look', that's all. He just doesn't want anyone to know what a big softy he is.”
Inu Yasha's irritated roar is heard across the distance. “I heard that Kagome!”
The three friends break out into renewed laughter.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~End Flashback~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. I do so hate to see a woman cry.”
Kagome jerks back immediately at the sound of the voice. She didn't need to look up to know who was standing before her. For all of eternity, she was sure she would always remember the sound of that grated, haughty voice. She quickly scampers to position herself into a fighting stance before a very smug, very satisfied looking Naraku. Her voice, low and sharp, only enhances the fury in her eyes as they flare with anger and determination, a flicker of red that passes unseen. “I. Am. Going. To. Kill. You.”
Naraku's laughter only serves to steel the determination growing in Kagome's soul. “My dear, you and what army?”
A bright searing light smashes against the side of an unsuspecting Naraku, who crashes face first into the dirt, several meters away. A low crouching figure, glowing a vibrant blue, stands guard directly before Kagome. A powerful and threatening growl emanates from its throat.
“How about us then?”
Naraku looks on in stunned horror, not really believing what he is seeing. “IMPOSSIBLE!”
“Inu…Inu Yasha?” Kagome reaches a tentative hand out to the glowing figure, not entirely sure of what or who she is seeing. “Is… is that you?”
The glowing blue energy immediately burns away as the figure turns to catch Kagome's gaze. “Keh. Who else would it be bitch?” Inu Yasha's cocky grin gives away his teasing tone.
“INU YASHA!” Fresh tears spill from her eyes as Kagome throws herself into her mates embrace. She clings to his chest, refusing to let go, as his arms immediately wrap around her, taking all of her against himself.
“Kagome.” His whispered tone tells her more in that moment then he could ever hope to put into words. He inhales her scent deeply, allowing her fresh scent to fill his nostrils while his demon blood sings with victory at retrieving his lost mate.
“But how? The others?” Kagome slowly pulls away as she struggles to read the answers in his face.
Inu Yasha's grin stretches across his sharp features as he nods his head in the direction of the main structure. “Take a look.”
Running towards her are the unmistakable shapes of her friends, who also seem to be immersed in a quickly fading blue light. “But how? I don't understand. The gas… I saw the gas.”
“What, sorry to see us?” Sango gives Kagome a teasing wink while Kagome breaks out into relieved laughter. The long time friends quickly embrace each other in a bone-crushing hug.
Naraku struggles to rein in his mounting anger at this most unprecedented turn of events, taking some comfort in knowing that he still had some of his own tricks yet to play. “I don't know how you did it, but it doesn't matter, you've already lost!”
Inu Yasha's heated glare burns into Naraku's. A battle of wills that spills freely across the open plain.
“That's what you think!” Without missing a beat, Inu Yasha leaps towards Naraku, heaving the fully transformed Tetsusaiga over his head, “BACKLASH WAVE!”
Naraku takes to the sky, simultaneously enveloping himself in his power repellent shield, just as the full force of the Backlash Wave crashes against his barriers, pushing him farther across they sky, but leaving him relatively unscathed.
“Is that all you've got half breed?” Naraku laughs as a plan begins to formulate in his mind. “Why not try this on for size.”
Pooling his demonic powers into the palm of his hand, a dark ball of energy begins to rapidly grow within it, as the power ball crackles with a dark eerie light. Seeming satisfied with the size of his little present, Naraku unleashes it into the center of the group of friends.
“Everyone, watch out!” Inu Yasha yells as he grabs Kagome, leaping out of the line of fire. A dark portal unexpectedly smashes open, mere inches from where the group had stood just moments ago. Hundreds of demons begin to suddenly pour forth from the portal.
“A portal that oozes demons. Naturally. I mean, who doesn't have one of those handy?” Kouga shakes his head in mild disbelief.
“Forget the wisecracks Kouga, just nail the jerks!” Sango runs headlong into the thick of lower level demons, her boomerang at the ready, as Miroku follows quickly at her side.
“You heard the lady.” Miroku smiles as he passes the still disbelieving wolf.
“You don't have to tell me twice.” Kouga takes off in the opposite direction, hoping to battle around the demons in order to pinch them in.
Kouga turns to yell over his shoulder while tearing through a group of insect demons. “Hey dog-shit! You coming?”
“I'm busy asshole, go on without us!” Inu Yasha leaps into the air, Kagome pressed firmly to his back, as the powerful Tetsusaiga cleaves through a large praying mantis demon. He has just enough time to register Kouga darting off, before what feels like a brick wall slams straight into his side, hurtling both Inu Yasha and Kagome into different directions as Kagome is ripped from his back.
Leaping quickly to his feet, Inu Yasha attacks the large monstrous demon that had literally knocked him out of the sky. “Kagome!”
“Don't worry, I'm okay! I'm going to try closing the portal.” Kagome quickly dusts herself off and bolts towards the humming mass of dark energy.
Inu Yasha ducks the massive tree size limb that threatens to smash his face into the ground. He leaps over the thick scaly arm and jumps straight for the center of the creature's chest, smashing his fist through its breastplate. The creature stumbles back, an anguished cry falling haphazardly from its twisted mouth. “No, Kagome! Wait!” But she was already gone.
“Grrrr! Damn that woman!” But before Inu Yasha can take off after Kagome, hoards of scaly, pint-sized, multi-legged spider demons begin to circle around him.
“Oh, ya wanna play do ya?” An evil grin slowly spreads across his face as he re-sheaths the Tetsusaiga and readies his killing claws. “I don't need any help taking you creeps down!”
The spider's twitch and shriek, communicating with each other in clicking noises, as they begin to formulate a plan of taking down the oddly powerful hanyou.
Inu Yasha cracks his knuckles in an impatient gesture. “Shut your twittering and bring it on!”
The hoard of miniature sized spider demons squeal into frenzied action as they leap into the air, simultaneously converging onto Inu Yasha's unprotected form. Biting, tearing and shrieking, nothing is seen of the hanyou but an occasional wisp of white hair buried beneath a pile of squirming bodies that proceed to devour their prey.
*********
Kagome unleashes another purifying arrow that burns into the mass of lower level demons that are hovering around the portal. She quietly thanks her mate's good sense for remembering to bring her weapon with him. Crouching low behind a mass of mostly destroyed crates containing unidentifiable objects, Kagome tries to figure out the best way of closing the portal.
“I guess I can always super charge one of my arrows and hope it carries enough power to shut down the portal.” Kagome knew that her powers were most potent when they were unleashed directly from her person. But channeling her powers through a conduit, like an arrow, made it easier to handle the massive outflow of her energies. And even though it was slightly less effective then her raw power, it helped her to focus her mind more as she concentrated on the object she was charging.
“Well, here goes nothing.” Kagome carefully edges around the broken crates, eyeing the demons and the dark humming portal before her. “Okay Kagome, you can do this. It's now or never.” Kagome quickly strings her bow with one of her arrows as she concentrates on infusing the object in her hands with as much Miko energy as possible. The arrow glows a vibrant blue as the energy held within it crackles and pulses on the bowstring.
Leaping out from her hiding spot, Kagome's eyes immediately zero in on the center of the portal. Demons continue to ooze from its dark depths, but in seemingly less numbers then before. Pushing all unnecessary thoughts aside, Kagome concentrates on the energy trapped in the arrow that is desperately seeking release from its small prison.
A shout goes off to the side, just as Kagome releases her arrow.
“STOP HER!”
Kagome grins in satisfaction as her purifying arrow burns through the mass of demons that attempt to jump in its path as it beelines for the center of the dark portal. It slams into the portal's center as enraged shrieks and howls go up from the demons dieing within. A bright light explodes simultaneously from its center, as Kagome reaches a hand up to cover her eyes from the intense burning glare.
As the light finally fades away, the sound of laughter from above causes her to look up.
“Oh you silly, stupid girl. Did you honestly think that you could beat me? Did you honestly think that you could contend with my power?” Naraku's self-satisfied grin scratches at Kagome's heart as she takes in the sight of the undamaged portal. Demons continue to pour forth from its depths as they claw their way over the burned and dismembered bodies of their allies.
Kagome stares in disbelief. If they couldn't close the portal, how could they possibly get to Naraku? At this rate, there would simply be too many demons to take down. Their energies would be exhausted from fighting them all and Naraku would just pluck them off, one by one, just as he had done before. Kagome closes her eyes in desperate need. The battle cries of her friends carry to her ears as they continue to fight Naraku's minions, even against the staggering odds. No. She had to find a way. For them.
“But how?” Kagome shakes her head in frustration. Was Naraku right? Was he simply too powerful?
“Yes, that's right little Miko. You understand now don't you? You know that you can't change the past. This is how it's meant to be. And once I destroy you, nothing will stand in my way of getting the jewel, not even your worthless hanyou!” Throwing his head back, Naraku releases an earth shattering roar as he begins to pool all his power, all his hate, and all his anger into the energies pooling in his hands.
As if understanding her predicament for the first time, Kagome's eyes widen in horror as she feels the dark masses of energy begin to merge and hum in Naraku's aura. Pure, raw, hateful power. The intensity of it was so great that Kagome couldn't understand how Naraku could keep such energy contained within him.
“Oh shit!” Kagome turns to run in a vain attempt to find cover when she stumbles over pieces of the forgotten broken crates behind her. She screams as a stray piece of twisted metal cuts into her leg, causing her to collapse to the floor. Gripping her wounded leg, blood quickly begins to soak her jeans.
She stares on in horror as she watches the arrogant grin spread across Naraku's face.
“Tsk, tsk, tsk. Getting clumsy now aren't we?” The sound of his mocking tone would be the last sound to invade Kagome's senses as she watches the massive ball of dark energy come spiraling towards her, and her with no where to run.
Kagome closes her eyes. “I love you, Inu Yasha.”
