Chapter II
In the dream world
Kagome awoke to a feeling of peacefulness but her mind was in such a haze that she found herself blinking continuously from the glare of the white light before her. As her vision cleared, she saw that she was no longer in her chambers, but found herself lying on a bed of soft moss. She sat up to see before her lay a tiny lake with a small waterfall of glistening water that fell into a clear, lucid crystallize pool. Around the lake was such beautiful vegetation of many kinds that Kagome mouth hung open in silent appreciation.
“You better close it before you catch a fly in there,” someone chucked softly behind her.
Kagome turn swiftly to see the most beautiful woman she had ever seen; she even thought that it even seem almost ethereal to believe possible. Her presence was not threatening, but instead her aura was soothing and calm, making her feel safe in her company.
“Who are you?” Kagome found herself asking the lady.
Not noticing the question, the lady was staring into Kagome cerulean blue eyes seeing the reflection of someone that had long passed.
“You remind me of myself,” the woman whispered softly.
Kagome stared at her in confusion, wondering what she was taking about. She seemed to act as if she knew her, but Kagome knew for sure that they had never met before, although in some way she did remind her of someone. Who to be exact, she did not know.
“Who are you?” Kagome asked the lady again.
“You should know who I am, Kagome,” the woman said, still in a soft voice.
Kagome closes her eyes to search her mind, looking for anything that would tell her who she was. Suddenly an image of a portrait penetrated across her already scattered thoughts. She was only five years old. She had gotten lost while trying to hide from her nanny and her sister who was teasing her again. She had sat their and cried when she notice the picture of the beautiful lady. She remembered that it had made feel so calm that she had fallen asleep there and woken up in her own chambers. Being as little as she was, she never thought about how she had gotten back.
All these thoughts passed through her mind in the thorough of seconds. Kagome open her still confused eyes to stare at the lady once more.
“I….I have seen you before,” Kagome began steadily, “but who you are I do not know. All I know is that you have a reason to be here, for my miko sense tells me that something will occur, and that something will not be good.”
“I am Midoriko, and you are one of my descendants.”
“I am your descendant? How is that possible?” asked Kagome, her curiosity getting the better of her.
“My daughter, I will tell you, but I must warn you of this curious nature of yours, or you will get yourself in a situation you won't be able to fix. Look where it has brought me,” she said in a voice full of regret, but Kagome could see that hint of joy in the corner of eyes.
“I will tell you my story, but please do not ask any question, for afterward, I have something to tell you.”
Kagome nodded at her mutely.
“Once long ago, I held all four of the elements, and in that right, I was chosen as the guardian of the four souls that contain each of the elements. The only downfall of this existence was that I was to remind untouched, to always be pure and innocent. The gods condemn me in a life of solitude or else I shall be cruse to wonder the earth in eternity as a spirit.
“My goal was to find four worthy beings to wield those powers, but trust me it was not easy. The task was difficult and my life was full of nothing but loneliness, but because I was only human, I longed so much for love, the one thing that I was forbidden.
“Just searching for the right one was tricky for many sought the power of the elements for their own selfish needs. They sought only what the power could bring, and although I was young, I was, and still am, a powerful miko. I fended for myself for so long that when the ones that I've been searching for finally arrived, I had to test them.
“The first was the lord of the north, Lord Yuki, a neko youkai, and he is still alive today. I chose him to wield the element of water because of his kindness to all beings, being them human or youkai.
“The second was the lord of the south, Lord Akira, a wolf youkai. He is also still alive today, and still is as powerful as ever. I chose him to wield the element of fire for not only his kindness, but of his determination to be a rightful ruler, to always be just in his decision.
“Now my third choice was pretty difficult. Lord Inu no Taisho of the western region, an inu youkai, was a powerful being who hid away behind a mask of indifferences. But I saw behind it all when he fell in love with a human hime after the death of his fist mate. I chose him to wield the element of the wind for his loyalty to always protect what was his right to protect. He is no longer alive, but I believe his sons are.
“The forth and last was Lord Kazuki of the eastern region. He was your ancestor and a powerful being in his own right, for all that he is human. He was a surprise to me for I have never met a man such as him who could hold so much power and not be consumed by its intensity. I never counted on falling in love but when I got to know him, he was perfection in my eyes. His touch was all that I longed for and then I no longer care what the gods would do to me, but for just one night, the man that I love held me in his arms and showed me what being a woman truly was, but afterwards, I wanted to be with him for eternity.
“For two years, I lived in happiness being his wife, thinking that the gods no longer cared, but in my own foolishness, I should not have let my guard down. It was then, after I gave birth to my first child, a beautiful baby girl, they came for me and tore me from my own family. They knew, oh they knew, but they waited so long that their punishment was much, much worst. My koi fought though, and with the element of the earth, he was physically powerful, but not enough to defeat a god.
“In the end I beg him to stop for our daughter needed him to be alive and I ask the gods to spare his life; they agreed, but on one condition which was to watch over the world but to never be apart of it and only coming when the world needed me most. I agreed and that was the last time that I thought I would ever see him again until that day four hundred and fifty years ago. I never saw my child again though.”
The silence after her last words seem to last like an eternity as Kagome had tears running down her cheeks and thinking of how sad Midoriko's tale was. Life has been cruel to her and it has been a long time in the vast loneliness of the world.
“I remember now,” Kagome said quietly, breaking the unbearable silences. “I remember the story of the great battle during the reign of darkness. The tale of how the four lords sealed Naraku and of an enthrall being that prophesied of the children of the sun and moon. It was you, wasn't it?”
“Yes.”
“But what does it have to do with me?” Kagome ask, already dreading the answer that is to come.
“That is the reason why I brought you here, to tell you your part in fate's hand.”
“My part?”
“Yes,” replied Midoriko. “You see, you are the child of the sun, and because the power of the element and the power of the miko that you have inherited from me run strongly through your blood, the gods has chosen you to defend the earth from the wrath of the dark lord. Even now the seal is becoming weak, and any day, he will be able to break free and seek vengeance on those who dare to trap him. He will let no one live for he will never be satisfied. Already he called for his servants to aid him in his conquest.”
Kagome was shock, to say the least. Never in her life would she dream of something like this, and now that is has happen, she wish that it hasn't.
I……I…I can't be. I am not strong enough. How can I defeat this Naraku? You must be mistaken, Midoriko. It ju…just can't be me,” Kagome sobbed, her words coming out almost in a jumble. She was afraid and she did not know what to do. Slowly, she covered her face in her hands as tears silently pooled down her cheeks. She felt ashamed of her weakness.
Kagome felt herself being pulled into comforting arms as they wrapped around her.
“I……I'm sorry f….for being so weak.”
“Hush child,” Midoriko cooed. “You are not weak for you are stronger than you think. You are the one.” Her voice held no room for argument.
Suddenly a thought came to Kagome.
“Midoriko, if I am the child of the sun, who is the child of the moon?”
“Observant, aren't you?” Midoriko said with a slight smile. “That, I can not tell you. All I can say is that your destiny would lead you into an adventure, a journey that is beyond dangerous.”
“A journey?” Kagome asked.
“Yes, a journey,” she answered. “A journey that would take you to many places and to meet many people. One of those people will be the child of the moon and that is all I know. I wish I could tell you more but the gods forbid me. My child life has been cruel to you, I know, but the world needs you, your friends and family needs you. Will you take this task?”
“I don't have a choice, do I?” Kagome whisper.
“I wish you did, child, I wish you did.”
So much responsibility was laid on her shoulder, and somewhere in her heart, Kagome knew what she had to do. Feeling the fire burning in her eyes and the confident growing in her chest, Kagome pulled out of Midoriko's embrace and look into orbs that was so like her own.
“I know what I have to do,” said Kagome with determination in her voice.
“It will be tough.”
“I know,” Kagome said getting up.
“Then I have no more to say.” Midoriko sigh, getting up also. “It time for you to go.”
“Go?”
“Yes, you are about to wake up.”
“Oh…but wait,” Kagome shouted when Midoriko form began to disappeared. “When do I leave on this journey and what must I do?”
“You will know, you will know.”
In the real world
Kagome could hear the sound of someone whispering as she gradually open her eyes. Before her, she could see her father and mother coming to her side as she tried to get up.
“Kagome dear, are you alright?” her mother asked, sitting on one side of her while her father sat on the other.
“Yes mother, I am fine. Please do not worry. Anyway, how long have I been sleeping?”
“Just a couple of hours dear, but I am still worried,” said her father. “What cause this to happen? We were waiting for you, but when you never came, I knew something was wrong.”
“It was nothing father. I was just really tired, that's all.” Kagome did not want to lie, but she didn't want them to be so worried. For now, anyway, she wanted them to be happy.
Lord Daisuke looked at his child warily. He could sense the lie, seeing that her aura changed slightly and then back to normal again. He would ask her about it when they were alone, but for now, he did not want his wife to worry since she began conceiving again.
“Daughter, I believe that you must rest, for you still look a little pale,” his wife reprimanded their daughter. “You really should take better care of yourself, my dear.”
“Yes, mother.”
“My lady, I think that it is time for you to retire,” Daisuke said to his wife.
“What of you my lord, shall you not retire with me?”
“I would like a few words with our daughter.”
“But my lord…”
“Yes my lady?”
Kagome watch as her parents stared at one another when her mother nodded her head and turn to leave, a slight smile playing at her lips. As the door closed behind her mother, Kagome regarded her father cautiously from the corner of her eyes. The look in his eyes told her that he knew she had lied.
“Kagome.”
“Yes father?”
“Look at me.”
“Yes father.” She turned to face him.
“Tell me.”
“Yes father,” Kagome said warily. She sighed inwardly as she told him of the dream.
Minutes later…
“…and then she said that I will know when the time is right,” Kagome finished. “What do you think father?”
“I don't Kagome. You tell me.”
“I trust her, father.”
“Then I trust your decision. You know that I always have. All I ask of you is that you be careful.”
Kagome felt tears in her eyes as her father pulled her into his arms.
“Thank you father,” muff Kagome as she was pressed against his chest. Suddenly she remembered that her parents wanted to tell her something before her fainting experience.
“Father, I remember that you wanted to see me before all this happen. What did you and mother wanted to take about?” she said pulling out of his embrace.
“It was not important dear,” her father said, all of a sudden looking flustered.
“Father,” Kagome said sternly as her father hurriedly got off the bed and walk swiftly towards the door. “Father what is it?”
“I believe it is time for me to go,” lord Daisuke said, completely ignoring her question. “You should rest dear,” and with that he was gone.
Kagome sigh exasperatedly at her father weird behavior. She yawns tiredly lying down upon the bed, thinking that she would talk to him tomorrow about it. Closing her eyes she instantly fell asleep.
Outside Kagome chambers, lord Daisuke sigh inwardly, a sweatdrop on the back of his retreating figure.
I think I'll tell her of her betrothal to the western prince tomorrow or another day, if she asked again that is, thought one part of the eastern lord.
I hope she doesn't, thought another part of the eastern lord. He sighed again and enters his chamber.
In the heart of the West (a/n: this happen while Kagome was in the dream world)
Sesshoumaru ran through the forest, his image not even able to be seen as he followed the scent of the youki he noticed but moments before. He was glade that he was here instead of being at the castle and having to deal with his dead father's council. He wondered why he even keeps them. They had just inform him of his father alliance with the region of Terrain, and then they dare to purpose to him of a marriage alliance with the eastern lord's daughter. He had wanted to rip all their heads off their shoulder at that moment but left before he did any damage.
How dare they think that I would mate with a human, he thought and sighs. They had dared to ask him, even when they had already formed a contract. He sighs again thinking that there was no harm in meeting this ningen hime. He would just get the satisfaction of rejecting her anyway. She is probablylike all the woman Ihave met before, Sesshoumaru thought sourly. Her family may be powerful, but they are all the same.
He put his thoughts behind him when he felt that he was getting close. He gradually begins to slow down and continued in a walking pace. Suddenly, he came to a clearing with the moon shining high above. A lone figure stood in the middle and he knew that it was a woman, by her shapely curves and also by her very feminine scent.
Heryoukiis strong, thought Sesshoumaru, but not stronger than me. Although I do sense that her aura is connected to someone more powerful than her, and yet it is very faint. He smirked, she is no match for me.
Sesshoumaru knew that she senses him, but still she did not turn around. This intrigued him nonetheless and so he took his full of her. He had seen it all before though, the long silky hair, the too revealing outfit and the same old stench of paint and rouge. They were the type of woman who would throw themselves at his feet, begging him to take them as his mate. It disgusted him, really, of how they would falsely say they love him, but wanting nothing more than his money and title.
“You know, it's very impolite to stare,” the youkai said seductively as she turns around.
“Wench, why are you on my land?” he said, his voice emotionless, but still as cold nonetheless.
“Milord, how cruel of you to say such things to a defenseless woman such as me,” the woman purred as she made her way up to him.
“Wench, state your business and don't come any closer to this Sesshoumaru or I will kill you. I have no time for these imprudent games of yours.” He smirked when she stopped in her track and the scent of fear began to roll off of her.
The demon stares at the infamous inu youkai before her. In her mind she was debating whether to run or die where she stands. She had not count on him being so ruthless. Most men would've fallen at her beauty.
“Milord, please forgive me. I am the Yasu, a lowly neko demon,” she said, her voice trembling as she got down on her knees, cowering before him, for she did not want to die.
The scent of her fear grew as Sesshoumaru walked forward.
“Tell me who sent you and do not presume to lie to this Sesshoumaru,” he said as he pulled out Toukijin and aiming it at her throat. He saw her eyes widen and smirked inwardly.
“I was sent by my master to relay a request on his behalf. He wishes you to join force with him and that if you don't you will suffer the consequences and lose someone dear to you,” she squeaks as she felt his sword pierce her skin. She could feel the blood running now down her neck. Yasu began to shiver in fear, now afraid for her life. “Milord, please do not kill me. I am only doing what my master wishes me," she begged.
Sesshoumaru did not waste time thinking. Only one word flashes through his mind as in one swift move he killed the demon and disappear in a ball of light.
Rin.
In moments he caught the faint metallic smell of blood. He growl dangerously as he caught the familiar scent; it belonged to Rin and the others of his group.
Sesshoumaru came to a stop at the sight that lay before him.
His eyes took in the scene of the carcasses of dead demons all over, while in the middle was Rin, her body glowing in a pinkish light as she bent over Jaken's dead body. AhUn lay to the side suffering from a bloody gash in the stomach.
He smelt the tang of saltiness and knew that Rin was crying. Sesshoumaru slowly made his way towards her, not wanting to frighten her any more.
“Rin,” he spoke, this time his voice soft. She raises her head, her eyes clouded in confusion.
“Sesshoumaru-sama?” he heard her ask cautiously. The power glowing around her body slowly disappeared as Sesshoumaru reach out and pulled her into his arms. He picked her up just as he took out Tenseiga. It pulse in his hand, and in one swipe over Jaken's form, he heard his sharp intake of breath. Jaken jumped to his feet before cowering before Sesshoumaru's feet.
“Milord, thank you for giving this unworthy servant of yours back his life,” Jaken said as he rabble on and on of how wonderful his lord was.
He ignored the imp and walked over to AhUn and heals him with Tenseiga.
“Jaken, shut up,” he said coldly afterwards.
Jaken who was still talking quickly clamped his mouth shut.
Sesshoumaru looked down at Rin who had been crying into his chest.
“Let's go, Jaken,” and off they went, heading back toward the castle.
“Sumimasen, Sesshoumaru-sama,” he heard Rin whispered.
His arms tighten around her. “No, I am sorry, my daughter.” For not being there when you needed me, he added to himself as he continues forward. He would ask her what happen later.
Rin shifted in his arms and fell instantly asleep.
